Chapter Ten: Forever and Always
Today was the day. Gabby was soon going to become Gabriela Dawson-Casey on a matter of hours, and she couldn't be happier about it. "How do I look?" She whispered.
"You look beautiful, Gabby." Kelly responded, giving her a smile. "Casey is going to lose his breath when he sees you," he added.
"I'm so nervous, Kelly. I can't believe this is actually happening…." she said in a soft tone as she stared at her reflection in the mirror, and tears welled up in her brown eyes.
"We all knew that this day was going to happen, Gabby. Including Shay."
A weak smile crossed the lips of Gabby at the mention of her best friend, who was now in a better place. Or, at least that was the way she had to look at it. She had to try and see the positive in such a heartbreaking situation. "You're right Kelly, thank you. She would be so happy for both me and Casey. I really wish that she was here with us, and I'm sure that you do, too. But it means everything to Matt and I are here. So thank you again."
"Of course Gabby," he said, as he brought her into his arms, placing a gentle kiss on her temple. "I love you, Gabby."
"Love you too, Kelly." She said softly as she closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. Today was a big day for both her and Matt, but it was going to be the best day of both of their lives.
"How are you holdin' up man? Those nerves get to you yet?" Kelly asked, chuckling lightly as he entered the room where Matt was standing for before the wedding. He was looking over his reflection in the mirror as he tried to make sure that everything was perfect.
The blond frowned, adjusting his tie for the tenth time. "They're definitely getting to me, dude." He admitted, running a hand through his hair. "I'm nervous as hell. I can't help but to wonder what she's going to look like. I already know that she's going to take my breath away," he smiled.
"Oh, she will man. You can trust me on that," Severide said with a grin.
Another smile crossed the lips of Matt. "I can't wait to see her, man."
"Well you don't have to wait any longer, because it's time." Kelly informed his friend, pointing to his watch.
"Okay," Casey said softly, taking a deep breath. "I'm ready."
"I'll see you out there," Kelly said, and then he went back to the room where Dawson was waiting for him.
Matt made his way to the spot on the beach where the priest was standing. "Are you ready Mr. Casey?" He asked with a kind smile. "It sure is a beautiful day."
"Yes it is, and yes I am." He replied as he returned the smile.
Moments later, Matt's blue eyes landed on Gabby and Kelly who were making their way towards him. Kelly was right, Dawson looked absolutely stunning, and he did in fact forget how to breathe. "Wow…" he whispered to himself.
Her brown orbs met with his blue ones, and she couldn't help but to smile at him once Kelly had had handed her off to her soon to be husband. "Hi," she whispered.
"Hey you," he said quietly.
"Who would like to say their vow first?" The priest asked as he looked at the couple.
"I will," Gabby spoke up, as she out a folded piece of paper. "Matthew Casey, you are the most amazing person to have ever come into my life. You are my best friend, and I know that I can count on you for anything and everything. Not only are you my best friend, but you are my rock. You make me laugh when I'm feeling down, you hold me when I cry, and you're always there for me when I need a listening ear. You've helped me through so much, and I don't know what I would do without you. Thank you so much for everything you have done. Today is the best day of my life, and I cannot wait to be with you forever. and that...that starts today. I love you, Matthew Casey. Forever and always."
Matt smiled at the girl before him, and then he took a folded piece of paper out of the pocket out of his suit jacket. "Gabriela Dawson, you are an incredible woman. You are so strong, and the most determined woman I have ever come across in my life. I knew from the moment that I had met you, that you were extremely special. After I had lost Haile, I never knew if I would be able to love again. To give my heart to someone, knowing that it could be broken for a second time. But I did, and I'm so happy that I decided to give you my heart. There's no one else in this world I would ever want to give my heart to. I learned what it felt like to love again, and what it felt liked to be loved. Thank you for giving me a second chance. Thank you for everything you have ever done. And just like you said, the rest of our lives start today. Forever and always."
"Gabriela Dawson, do take Matthew Casey to be your husband for as long as you both shall live?"
"I do," Dawson replied, as she locked her eyes with Matt's.
"And do you, Matthew Casey, take Gabriela Dawson to be your wife for as long as you both shall live?"
"I do," he said in a soft voice as he and Gabby spoke through the eye contact they were sharing, no words had to be spoken to know what they were each thinking.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."
Taking Gabby's face into his hands, Matt kissed the woman that was now his wife with all he had, and as he felt her return the kiss, he knew that this had been the happiest he had ever been in a long, long time.
*three and a half years later*
Shortly after they had gotten married, Dawson had decided to no longer work at the firehouse. Not only because she could no longer work under Casey due to the fact the two of them were now married, but also because of the reason she had found out she was carrying his child.
The two of them had a daughter who they named Elizabeth in honor of Shay. About a year after Elizabeth was born, they found out that Gabby was pregnant again. This time, it was a boy, and the two of them had decided on the name David.
Gabby was more than okay with being a stay at home mom. She loved to see her children grow each and everyday, learning new things as they tried to figure out who they were.
Of course, fifty-one always welcomed back the Casey family back to the house with open arms. "Daddy come home tonight?" Two-year-old Elizabeth asked her mother as she looked up at her with the bright blue eyes that she had gotten from her father, as well her blonde hair.
"Yes baby, daddy will be home soon," she replied as she smiled at her, and then sat down on the couch with David, getting ready to feed her son a bottle.
A half an hour later, Matt walked through the door, being greeted by a squealing Elizabeth. "Daddy!" She smiled happily at him. "I missed you!"
"Daddy missed you too, baby girl." He smiled, picking her up, and placed a kiss on her forehead. "But I'm here now."
"I love you daddy," the little girl said sleepily as she placed her head on her father's shoulder, and her eyes began to get heavy.
"Love you too, Lizzie" he replied, using her nickname as he made his way over to his wife.
"Hey baby, how was work?"
"It was good, but I'm glad to be home. I missed you, and the kids."
"We missed you too," she smiled as she looked up into the eyes of her husband, placing a soft kiss on his lips. "I love you."
"I love you too," Casey replied as he sat down on the couch beside the love of his life with a sleeping Elizabeth in his arms, and he meant it. He really, truly, did love her.
Despite the fact they had been through some rough points in their relationship, and they had even broken each other's hearts at one point without meaning to, they learned that one thing had always been true.
That they were meant for each other. Forever and always.
