Guess who's done with school? This means I can actually update! My goal for the summer is to finish this story, which I do believe is quite possible, considering I'm estimating about five more chapters (do not quote me on that!). Enjoy!
**Call Me Crazy**
As the wheels ascended from the ground, Ikuto's eyes remained steadfastly glued to the window. He could distinctly imagine his sister running after the plane, clutching Kukai's hand tightly, as they miraculously made the plane just as it took off. However, miracles were merely fictitious; life was full of misfortune and unfortunate events. However, the pinkette sitting beside him demonstrated that some positive could occur.
He glanced over at her, watching her vacant expression gazing at the seat in front of her. She had not said anything since they woke up this morning. Ikuto could still feel the impact of her slap upon his cheek. Such a swift action felt timeless. Beside Amu, Tadase had earbuds in his ear, music becoming his sole comfort. He glanced over at Amu every so often, worry present in his eyes. Ikuto envied Tadase. His phone had managed to die out, so he was unable to listen to music. However, not one song would comfort Ikuto, given his sister's unknown state. Worry was a vast understatement.
He leaned back in his chair, wondering how Utau was. She was relentless; there was no way she would give up until she found Kukai. She would do so at the cost of her own safety. He clenched his fists tightly. He knew he shouldn't have left; he was a horrible brother. She had needed him, but pushed him away. Ikuto could have helped her find Kukai. Tadase would have taken care of Amu; he could have stayed with his sister. However, the red leather of the seat Ikuto currently sat on was where he found himself, opposed to the metallic walls lining the asylum.
"Amu-Chan, the snacks are coming by," Tadase pointed out, removing one earbud as he glanced at her. Ikuto turned back to them. "Do you want chips or pretzels?"
"Pretzels?"
"What about you Ikuto?" Tadase asked.
"I'll take pretzels as well," Ikuto murmured. He bit his lip, recalling a memory involving pretzels with Utau and his father. Memories were just wounds that bandages could not fix. Tadase ordered three bags of pretzels from the flight attendant, smiling politely. Ikuto sighed, and closed his eyes. He had four hours on the flight; Amu was not in any sort of mood to talk, so he futilely attempted to rest.
Rima was glancing over at Tadase a row diagonal from her, her hazel eyes mundanely fixed on his bright blonde hair. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the person beside her lean back into his leather seat. She turned back to him, her eyes softening.
"You alright?" Rima wondered, her voice lined with velvet. He nodded, brushing back a strand of his purple hair. She watched him for a moment.
"I'm fine," He murmured, noticing her continued stare. Rima turned away, staring at the seat in front of her.
"I was just asking," She mumbled, reaching for the flight magazine. She flipped through a few pages, unable to understand the Filipino words. She sighed, stuffing it back in the pocket of the seat in front of her. Unfortunately, there was no television screen, so Rima found herself taking interest in the seat in front of her. She glanced over to her other side again subtly. Nagihiko seemed more content with staring at one spot. Unlike Rima, his expression contained deep reminiscing. Rima opened her mouth, but immediately closed it. Speaking was like balancing on a tightrope. Any wrong movement or step could prompt her to fall off the tightrope and ruin the entire routine.
"What are you thinking about?" Rima wondered. He didn't answer. Rima blinked a few times, watching his oblivious expression. "Excuse me for trying to make conversation."
"Huh?" He glanced up at her.
"You can go back to staring at nothing; I would probably do that too if I were sitting next to someone I hadn't seen in months."
"What?"
"Or speak in one word sentences; that's cool too."
"You don't have to be so sarcastic," He muttered.
"I'm just trying to not be bored," Rima replied. "And maybe, by some miraculous chance, I may have missed you, so after over a month, I may actually want to talk to you. Is that hard to believe?"
"Sorry, it's been a lot…I just, I kind of just want-"
"To be silent?"
"To think by myself," He clarified.
"Didn't you have a month to do that?"
"It's different now that I'm out. I have to process everything, just wonder if…" When he didn't finish, Rima raised an eyebrow.
"If…?"
"If you should have come." Rima frowned.
"The question isn't whether we should have come or not. We didn't have a choice; we had to come and save you." A flight attendant came over to them, handing them snacks. They thanked her, watching as she walked away.
"Of course you had a choice." Nagihiko sighed, lowering his voice. "People are sent to asylums; that's natural. You can't just barge into a government institute and take someone."
"You didn't belong there, Nagi," Rima pointed out. "You're not insane like them; you're normal."
"Still, I didn't need rescuing."
"Oh come on, don't tell me you were happy there. Look at Amu; she's anything but happy. They screwed her up! If we hadn't come sooner, they would have done the same thing to you!"
"They weren't going to administer Electroconvulsive Therapy on me," Nagihiko told her. "I was more compliant with them; I didn't resist or-"
"But what if they realized their treatments didn't work?! They could have used it as the last resort, and for what? You should be thankful that we saved you."
"They have Kukai now!" Nagihiko pointed out. "You could have gotten captured too, or Tadase, or Ikuto, hell, even all of you. What would that have accomplished?"
"That didn't happen though; we were successful-"
"And what about Kukai?"
"Utau will save him," Rima urged. "I don't regret going."
"Don't be absurd. You don't believe that," Nagihiko pointed out.
"Well, what else am I going to do, just be a downer about it?! We saved you and Amu; maybe she really can do it."
"What are the chances of her success? If she fails, was it really worth it? It's just the same, isn't it? You saved two people, but two people are captured. Are you going to just fly back down and risk it all the same?!"
"Maybe we will!"
"And then what? Two more people get captured? Or more? The cycle never ends, Rima. If you hadn't gone-"
"Well, we did come!" Rima snapped. "And I don't regret it."
"It was stupid."
"Excuse me?"
"You of all people should not have gone. They knew you had Kusu-Kusu. What would you have done if they caught you? Your biggest fear is getting kidnapped again; if you had been even a second slower, they could have captured you. Why on earth would you throw yourself away and risk reliving your worst nightmare—just for a chance to save us?"
"Because I'm madly in love with you, okay?!" Rima snapped, ignoring the blush that formed on her cheeks. Nagihiko lowered his eyes. Noticing a few people glance over at them, she lowered her voice, inching slightly toward him. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Tadase and Ikuto's eyes on her. "You sacrificed yourself for me. What was I supposed to do, just stay back?!" Before Nagihiko could open his mouth, Rima put a finger to his lips. "I owed you. You gave me everything: a place to stay when I had nowhere to go, a bed to sleep in when I was scared, extra clothing—and of course my freedom at the expense of yours. I couldn't just stay back and do nothing. I was indebted to you, Nagihiko. But it was much deeper than that too. I've owed people money and never paid them back. But for you, I'm unconditionally in love with you. When you told me initially, it wasn't me that needed to know; it was you. You were entering the asylum and you needed to know that I would always be there for you. I'm sorry I'm only telling you now, but I'm in love with you, and despite the risks, I would do anything for you, even if that forces me to face my own fears, because I would rather drown in agony than have you even dip into suffering." His eyes shifted over to a spot on the ground, his eyes darkened. Rima let out a sigh, moving her eyes away.
"That was so cute!" Kusu-Kusu whispered in Rima's ear. Her cheeks reddened slightly, but she did not react. She grabbed the magazine and continued flipping through it, trying to find something to keep her occupied. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the boy whom she declared her love for remaining preoccupied by the tile in the floor. However, his expression was no longer thoughtful and reminiscent. She could see something oddly familiar present within his eyes… guilt?
Finally, the plane began descending to the ground. Rima watched through the window, some purple hair blocking her vision, as the buildings grew taller. As the wheels scraped the ground, a few people on the flight began to applaud, as if it was a grand finale of some performance. A grand finale…
As the wheels completely halted, Rima immediately unbuckled her seatbelt. She glanced over at the other three, watching as Ikuto and Tadase rapidly unbuckled as well, and Ikuto unbuckled Amu's for her. He grabbed her hand, pulling her into the aisle. Rima turned back to Nagihiko, who was standing as well. He nodded slightly, following as Rima pushed through the aisles, ignoring the rudeness she exhibited as she shoved through people.
"Excuse you," Some people muttered, as the five of them disembarked the flight, and walked rapidly to the baggage claim. Given that she was the shortest, Rima had to practically jog to keep up pace with them. As they arrived at the carousel, the bags started moving, going around in a perfect circuit.
"It seems like years ago when Kukai told us his story about Yaya riding the carousel," Tadase pointed out, letting out a sigh. "Everything's just been happening so quickly."
"That's a pretty bag," Amu noted, pointing at a certain bag. It was pink with black polka dots scattered across it.
"It is nice," Tadase agreed, feigning kindness. Rima watched, his face forming a complete smile. How could he have possibly changed so rapidly from being down to happy? Was that love? Rima turned back to Nagihiko, who remained completely silent. He always made her happy. Why couldn't she seem to make him happy, when it was her dream in life to make others' smile?
"Those are the bags," Ikuto pointed out, grabbing them before off the carousel.
"Yukari should be waiting," Rima pointed out. The others nodded, following as they wheeled the bags over to the front of the airport.
"There you guys are!" Yukari exclaimed. "Amu, Nagihiko, it's great to see you guys."
"You too, Sanjou-San," Nagihiko told her, a small smile forming on his face. Rima bit her lip, fighting to urge to make a snide comment about how fake it was. Amu said nothing, her eyes wandering around aimlessly. They began walking to Yukari's car.
"Have you heard anything from…?"
"No," Ikuto muttered.
"Well, we just have to hope for the best. It's all we can do, right?" Yukari sighed. "Have you two given any thought to where you'll be staying?"
"Obviously, it would not make sense to return home," Nagihiko pointed out.
"I have room," Ikuto pointed out.
"Are you sure? I do too and-"
"It would be stupid to put you and Nikaidou at a risk for no reason," Ikuto pointed out. "Rima's already staying at my place, so I can find room for two more people."
"Well, whatever you decide, but I'm going to drive you to my place now considering your car is there and Yaya wanted to see you guys."
"Yaya?" Rima inquired.
"She's over now. She's been coming over a lot these past few couple of days. She's been over a lot especially yesterday and today, given Kukai…"
"How is she?" Tadase wondered, as they got into the car. Ikuto hopped into the passenger seat, while the other three squeezed in the back.
"Well, not great…" Yukari admitted. "She's really concerned. I think she'll be happy to see you guys. I know you, Nagihiko, are very close with Yaya as well."
"Yeah…" His voice seemed dry, as he shared a seat with Rima. As the drive began, silence immediately fell. Rima could feel her legs bump into Nagihiko's every turn or changing of lanes Yukari made, but she tried to ignore it. He still made no effort to maintain any sort of eye contact with her.
Upon arriving at Yukari's house and parking the car, a pigtailed girl bolted out of the house, running over to them. As Nagihiko stepped out of the car, he was immediately confronted with a wide embrace, sending him back onto the car seat.
"Yaya!" Nagihiko exclaimed, a bit taken aback. Yaya rested her head on his shoulder, hugging him tightly. He wrapped his arms around her hesitantly.
"Yaya was so worried," She sniffled, her voice muffled by his shoulder. "Yaya didn't know…"
"Shh, I'm okay…" His voice was broken.
"Kukai…"
"Utau will save him," Tadase promised, patting the pigtailed girl's head. Yaya picked her head up, looking at Tadase with watery eyes.
"You don't really believe that, do you?"
"We don't have a choice but to," Rima pointed out, climbing out of the car as Nagihiko got up. "What else are we supposed to do, just immediately give up and stand around hopelessly? That's stupid. We saved Nagi and Amu against impossible odds. Maybe it'll work." Nagihiko glanced over at her, surprise present within his eyes. Rima pretended not to notice, but the slight blush on her cheeks confirmed otherwise.
"Since when were you inspirational Rima-Tan?" Yaya wondered.
"Well, Amu's not exactly rallying us," Rima muttered under her breath. Yaya glanced over at the pinkette, whose eyes were fixated on the ground.
"Yaya, you ought to head inside." All of them glanced up, facing the forest green-haired boy, his glasses shining in the bright sun light. He smiled at Nagihiko and Amu briefly.
"But Yaya just wanted to say hi," Yaya whined.
"You know it is quite risky for you to stand around idly."
"We should go inside anyway," Yukari suggested. The others nodded, following the Sanjou siblings inside.
"What did you mean by that comment, Sanjou-Kun?" Tadase wondered, taking a seat on one of the couches. He furrowed his eyebrows as Ikuto and Amu sat beside him, Ikuto in the middle. Rima sat down on a two-person couch. Nagihiko sat down beside her, prompting her to glance up at him. He gave her a small smile, prompting her to smile slightly. Yaya sat down beside Kairi, while Yukari went upstairs.
"Unfortunately, we do have some matters to discuss as well." Kairi adjusted his glasses.
"Aw come on, really?" Yaya whined. "Kukai is a bit more important!"
"Yaya, your situation cannot be disregarded. It is mandatory that we focus on you as well." Yaya sighed.
"What happened?" Rima wondered impatiently.
"Yesterday, as you were present in the Philippines, Yaya-Chan and I, at Yaya's humble request, had an excursion to a specific candy store."
"Your favorite one?" Rima wondered. Yaya nodded, her excitement empty.
"Yaya was going to buy tons and tons of candy, but Kairi-Kun was being a butt and had to stop her."
"I was concerned that you were ingesting too much candy as means of becoming increasingly exuberant in order to eliminate your concerns," Kairi clarified.
"Yaya could really use that now…" Kairi placed a comforting arm around her shoulders, rather shyly.
"Consequently, Yaya did not react well to my comment about her candy ingestion, and to put it simply, Yaya character changed in the middle of the candy store."
"So you're saying that Yaya…"
"They know she can see charas?" Ikuto finished.
"Kairi left out the part where he kissed Yaya." Rima's mouth visibly dropped open.
"Oh my god!" Tadase exclaimed. Kairi turned extremely red.
"So are you two a couple?" Ikuto wondered.
"W-Well, the circumstances surrounding the current scenario are not ideal, b-but perhaps it is wise to pursue a relationship in order to alleviate-"
"It's about time you guys got together," Rima pointed out.
"You know, it's funny." Yaya glanced up at Kairi. "Yaya always thought that Yaya would be the last guardian to be in a relationship, but besides, well, you know, Yaya and Kairi are the second couple! Well, besides you three," Yaya gestured to Tadase, Ikuto, and Amu, the two males glancing up in horror at Yaya, "who Yaya doesn't even know. But Yaya never thought she would beat you two." Yaya looked at Nagihiko and Rima. Nagihiko bit his lip, glancing at the ground.
"Yaya…" Rima's voice was coated with warning.
"…Anyway, Yaya, be careful," Tadase told her. "Chances are, we're all wanted now, and so you should be careful like all of us. No doubt that they will be more regulatory considering we snuck in and escaped."
"Not Kairi," Rima pointed out. "He's the only one who is not being wanted for having a chara." All eyes turned to face Kairi, with the exception of Amu's.
"Yay Kairi!" Yaya kissed him on the cheek, surprising everyone, including Kairi. Yaya smiled slightly. "Kukai would have smacked Yaya for that…"
"We should probably head back," Ikuto pointed out, standing up. "I left my car parked here before we got on the plane."
"What should I do?" Tadase wondered. "My parents don't know about my charas, but they could find out anytime…"
"You can stay here Hotori-San," Kairi suggested. "It is quite evident that Ikuto has many rooms filled." Tadase nodded slowly, glancing longingly at Amu.
"You should call your parents and tell them that you're staying with a friend," Ikuto suggested. He nodded slowly.
"Should Yaya stay over at Kairi's place too?"
"You're probably okay, Yaya," Nagihiko pointed out. "Some people know about you, but you won't be as extensively searched for as the rest of us."
"Yaya, if they do learn the truth, come here immediately," Kairi told her.
"Aye, Aye, captain Kairi!" Yaya saluted him.
"Ikuto, we should go," Rima urged. He nodded. Yaya hugged Nagihiko again, who hugged her back.
"Amu, we are leaving now," Ikuto told her, his voice gentle.
"Leaving…" She repeated, glancing up at him.
"Yes, we are going to my place," Ikuto told her. "You'll have a comfortable bed all to yourself." Amu nodded slowly, standing up shakily. Yaya let go of Nagihiko, and turned to Ikuto.
"Iku-Tan, Yaya knows how you feel." He turned to face her. "But Yaya just wants you to know that…that she's extremely grateful for your sister."
"Utau's brave," Ikuto whispered. "Kukai means the world to her, and she won't give up until he's safe. You can count on that." Yaya smiled weakly. The four of them exited the house, and headed into Ikuto's car, with Rima taking the passenger seat. Silence fell immediately in the car, as Ikuto drove slightly above the speed limit.
Finally, they arrived at Ikuto's place. The four of them got out of the car, and headed inside. Ikuto glanced around his apartment, letting out a sigh as he saw some of Utau's sheet music on the floor. He picked up one of them, remembering the way the words fell so casually out of her mouth. He sighed, and turned to the other three.
"Unfortunately, I only have one guest bed," Ikuto pointed out. "Amu, you can take Utau's room for now." Guilt filled each syllable he sounded out. "I'll show you where it is."
"I'll sleep on the couch," Rima muttered. She turned to face Nagihiko. "You can have the guest bed. It's really comfortable."
"Don't be silly; you take it," Nagihiko told her. "I don't mind sleeping on the couch."
"But you haven't had a real bed for a month!"
"That's not entirely true; there were beds at the asylum."
"I highly doubt they were comfortable."
"Okay, you know what? One of you can take my bed and the other the guest bed. I'll take a couch," Ikuto suggested.
"Ikuto, this is your house," Nagihiko told him. "We'll work it out. We can share too, if necessary." Rima turned slightly red, recalling that night at Nagihiko's house when she had her nightmare.
"Whatever you want." Ikuto gave Rima a look, prompting Rima to roll her eyes. "Fujisaki, you can borrow some of my clothes. It's risky to go out to buy more, so hopefully it fits."
"Thank you," Nagihiko told him. Ikuto shrugged, heading up the stairs and showing Amu her room.
"The room's this way," Rima muttered, following Ikuto upstairs and leading Nagihiko the other direction. "The bed is kind of small, but I'm sure that it'll work…"
"It'll be fine," Nagihiko told her. "It's only slightly smaller than my bed, so we can squeeze. We still have a while before nighttime though. It probably isn't wise to get too much involved with Ikuto, since he's going through a lot with his sister. So we can relax here for now."
"Yeah…" Rima sat down on the bed, her eyes gazing out the window."
"I owe you an apology." She glanced up, watching as the purple-haired boy sat down beside her, his legs conspicuously close to hers. His honey-golden eyes were fixated on her, making her feel all sorts of discomfort and self-awareness. "After everything happened…the last thing I would have ever wanted was to worry you."
"What did you expect me to do, just forget about you and live my life?"
"No, of course not, but I do feel badly that you had to work so hard to try to save me." Rima opened her mouth to speak, but Nagihiko put a finger to her lips. "However, I do want to thank you. Thank you for rescuing me, Rima. I'll spare you the details, but being there was not exactly pleasant. Sure, it was quite risky and dangerous, but I am grateful you came. I should have recognized that before snapping at you." He removed his finger from her lips, and caressed her cheek.
"Whatever," Rima murmured.
"I really did miss you, Rima," Nagihiko told her. "I mean, it's hard not to miss the girl whom you sacrificed yourself for and professed your feelings to." Rima smiled slightly.
"Did I make it obvious enough that I missed you?"
"Not quite." His hands cupped her chin, and pulled her closer to him. Rima closed her eyes, leaning toward him. Suddenly, the door opened, prompting them both to immediately break apart, both blushing.
"Sorry to disturb," Ikuto muttered.
"No, we weren't doing anything," Rima pointed out, the redness of her cheek proving otherwise. Ikuto raised an eyebrow.
"Well, I'm ordering Chinese food, so what do you want?"
"You're going out?" Nagihiko wondered. "Isn't it a bit risky?"
"There's someone I need to talk to," Ikuto muttered. "Amu's resting, but make sure she's alright."
"Will do." After taking their orders (Nagihiko didn't want anything, but Rima forced him to get something), Ikuto hopped out their window, hopping from tree to tree.
"It's not smart that he's going out," Nagihiko muttered.
"This is coming from the guy that organized an entire plan to rescue the love of his life from a guarded asylum," Rima pointed out.
"Good point."
"Well…" Rima glanced at the ground shyly. "Weren't we in the middle of something?" Nagihiko glanced over at her, a timid smile appearing on his face.
"Ah, yes… I was saying that you had not made it obvious enough that you missed me." Rima moved closer to him, benignly touching her lips to his. He hugged her closer to him. Their lips eventually parted, prompting Rima to smile bashfully as she rested her head on his shoulder.
**Call Me Crazy**
To his astonishment, as Ikuto arrived on Amu's balcony as he habitually did, Ami was already present in Amu's room. When she saw Ikuto's presence, her eyes lit up as she ran over to open the balcony doors.
"Did you do it?!" Ami exclaimed, her eyes seemingly excited. Ikuto nodded, sitting down on Amu's bed. The television was blaring, but Ikuto paid no mind.
"Omigosh, yay!" Ami was grinning. Noticing Ikuto's lack of enthusiasm, Ami cocked her head, sitting down beside him. "You don't look very thrilled… Is she…?"
"I promised you I would fix her. I will, I promise, but it's going to be hard," Ikuto admitted.
"Where is she?" Ami wondered.
"She's at my place," Ikuto explained. "You shouldn't see her yet. She's still recovering. Just wait a few days, okay?"
"But she's my sister!"
"I know," Ikuto muttered. "I'm sorry, but you have to wait. You won't like what you see."
"But-"
"You know that spark of fire in Amu? That part of her who is so passionate and excited about life?" Ami nodded slowly. "It's extinguished. Amu is cold and uncaring right now. She's scared about everything and her charas have vanished." Tears beckoned to fall down Ami's cheeks.
"You…you'll fix her though…"
"Of course." Ikuto patted Ami's head. "For now though, just wait. She isn't in any condition to be seeing you yet." Ami nodded slowly.
"Thank you for saving her, at least." Ami hugged Ikuto tightly.
"I always will." Ikuto's eyes shifted to the television, his eyes suddenly widening. He let go of Ami, his eyes fixated on the television. Ami glanced up, following Ikuto's gaze.
"Utau…" Ikuto whispered, noticing the headline on the screen that read: Japanese Pop Singer Accused of Seeing Imaginary Charas, with an image of said pop singer.
"T-They know?!" Ami exclaimed.
"Just yesterday, Hoshina Utau and some of her friends snuck into the Luminous Corporation Asylum on the Philippines and freed some of the inpatients. Two of the identified inpatients that have escaped were Fujisaki Nagihiko and Hinamori Amu."
"Shit," Ikuto whispered, his eyes widening.
"Hoshina Utau is believed to still be present in the building, still freeing some of the locked up inpatients."
"Utau, please be careful…"
There we have it! I know I did not include a section on Utau/Kukai or Amu (besides her small lines), but they will be much more prominent next chapter. Anyhow, you know the drill: review, and keep reviewing! I've been getting very few lately, but now that I'm going to be updating a lot, I'm hoping for more! :D
