For a moment, nobody moved. Joachim was grey and trembling and looked like he was about to keel over, Bones and David were frozen in shock, and Kirk and Carol were too confused to act. Then chaos erupted.

Kirk snatched up a large stick lying nearby, and charged. Bones and David whipped out their phasers. Joachim sprang to life at the sight of the weapons, screaming "NO!" Kirk's blow hit soundly across Khan's head, but Khan simply shook it off. He leapt backwards, dragging Carol with him, and his face hardened. "I warned you, Admiral," he hissed. Then a phaser shot froze them all.

Everyone turned to look at David and Joachim. They had been grappling for the phaser, each driven mad by fear for their parent. Now they were simply staring at each other in shock. Then slowly, slowly, Joachim collapsed to the ground, a small, charred hole in his stomach. He turned his head to look at Khan, whose face was etched with horror. Vivid blue eyes glistened with tears of pain and fear. "Papa," he whimpered softly. Then he went very still. His eyes were still wide open.

I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry. I really, really tried not to do this. This story has gotten away from me in so many ways.

Right now I'm really struggling to match up my intended ending with what this story has become. Reviews would help. Like, a lot. So go crazy, write four paragraphs, analyze to your hearts' content, and tell me what you're thinking. Next chapter will probably be the last.
