Chapter 10- Unlikely Alliance
He's been livin' in a pure illusion
She's gotta come to her own conclusion .
Both the brothers looked at each other questioningly and then James turned back to Marraine, "What's the best part?" He asked cautiously.
Marraine smirked, "It comes with revenge on Derek Hadwinn" She waved the posted of Drew from the sachet in front of her.
The Rocket brothers smirked at each other and nodded.
XOXOX
A bright fire crackled merrily, surrounded by smooth stones to create a makeshift fireplace.
Nearby, a fallen tree had made a natural bench for May and Drew as May wrapped her hair around Drew's hand.
Torchic watched, standing on the ground next to a lock of May's golden hair. Her hair was all around them and Drew watched her wrap his arm with her hair.
"So.." Drew started slightly confused, "You're being strangely cryptic as you wrap your magic hair around my injured hand."
"Its called being worried." May muttered under her breath.
"What was that?" Drew pretended not to hear.
May's blood boiled but she took in a deep breath and willed herself to calm down.
"Ouch!" Drew winced as she wrapped a strand particularly tightly.
"Sorry, but its your fault." May glared at him.
Drew rolled his eyes, "Seriously, What are you doing?"
"What does it look like?" May retrod.
"Umm.. I don't know? Maybe you're trying to wrap me up like an Egyptian Mummy?" Drew muttered.
May rolled her eyes, "No genius, I'm trying to heal you."
Now Drew started to look a little worried, "I cant tell weather you were sarcastic or not but both prospects are sport of creepy."
May sighed, "Just..." she finished wrapping her hair around his hand and held it between her two smaller, more dainty hands, "Dont freak out."
Drew nodded, still unsure of what she was going to do as she closed her eyes.
"Flower gleam and glow." May started softly.
"Let your powers shine." She continued, her yes closed. Her hair had started to glow golden and the glow was slowly creeping to the end of her hair, which was wrapped around Drew's hand.
"Make the clock reverse." Drew's eyes followed the glow in fascination and a bit of cautiousness as it reached the part next to where Torchic was sitting.
"Bring back what one was mine." May continued as Torchic pointed to its hand. Drew looked down at his own.
"Heal what has been hurt," As the glow reached the part which was touching his hand he felt a warm tingling feeling in his hand.
"Change the fate's design." The feeling continued as it turned into a more warmer pleasant feeling.
"Save what has been lost." Drew was rather surprised at the feeling and looked up at May's face. She had her eyes closed and looked divine.
"Bring back what once was mine." Drew looked to Torchic in panic and Torchic smirked at him.
"What once was mine..." The warm feeling suddenly became one hot speck on his palm and disappeared.
May stopped and opened one Sapphire eye to look at Drew.
Drew looked astounded and he slowly peeled off her hair from his hand. It was completely healed. Not one cut or gash. Perfectly normal.
Drew's mouth dropped open. He turned his hand back and forth and his eyes widened.
May opened both her eyes and held out her hands to him as if to take his uneasiness away, "Please don't freak out!" she begged.
Drew took in a deep breath and quickly tucked his hand hand under his armpit, "I'm not freaking out. Are you freaking out? No I'm just very interested about your glowing hair and the magical power it possesses. How long has it been doing that exactly?" he blabbered rocking himself back and forth to calm himself down.
May sighed, "Forever, I guess." she mumbled.
"Mother says, when I was a baby, people tried to cut it." May turned to the fire and kept her eyes on it, "They wanted to take it for themselves."
Drew kept his eyes on May all the time. How could they hurt her? She's so innocent. So trusting. And beautiful. Especially in the firelight... FOCUS!
"But," May turned to meet his eyes, "Once it was cut," she put her hand to her hair and pulled back a bit. A brown strand popped out of the tangle of golden hair, "It turns brown and looses it power." May said leaving her hair and turning back to the fire.
Drew had looked at the strand of brown hair wearily. Now he looked at May with sympathy as she tried to phrase her next words.
"A gift like that.." May played with her hair nervously, "It has to be.. protected." she looked up at Drew with her Sapphire blue eyes, "That's why mother never let me.." she trailed off and turned back to the fire, "That's why-" she turned back to Drew and looked him in the eyes, "I never left and.." she trailed off again.
Drew pursed his lips, Man she had it bad, "You never left that tower?" Drew said helpfully and it sounded like he couldn't believe what he was saying.
May turned her head away from him, "Uh-huh."
"And you're still gonna go back?" He asked the back of her head incredulously.
May turned around slowly and it seemed like her eyes had turned into big pools of baby blue, "NO." she said firmly, "yes.." she sighed after that, her face twisting into a sad smile, " Ugh.." she buried her face in her hands, "Its complicated."
Torchic crept up to her and laid its head against her feet.
Drew just looked at her as if he didn't understand what was so complicated about it.
May peeked out at his through her fingers and racked her brain for a change of topic. Se got one and pushed her hair back out of her face and turned to him with a smirk-ish smile.
"So..?" she started, "Drew Hayden huh?"
Drew snapped out of his sympathy as the tables were turned, "Well. Yeah." he turned to the burning fire and put his hands on his knees, "I'll just spare you the sad story of poor orphan Drew Hayden. Its a little bit of a.." he tailed off and turned to look at May.
"Its a little bit of a downer." He shrugged nonchalantly.
May just looked at him with enthusiasm and moved nearer to him and sat with her chin resting on her arms, staring at him as if to say 'Go on.'
Drew sighed at her antics, "There was this book. A book I used to read all the time to younger kids, 'The Tales of Derek Hadwinn. Awesome battler, top coordinator, an excellent breeder, richest man alive." He emphasized his point by sweeping his hand around.
Drew turned to May and smirked at her, "Not bad with the ladies either." he almost whispered to her, "Not that he had to say anything about it to get noticed of course." Drew pretended to tap his chin thoughtfully.
May smiled. She felt as if she was listening to a little kid tell her about his dream, "Hm.." she sighed, "Was he a thief too?"
"Ahh.. Well, no." Drew turned to stare at the fire, "Actually, he had enough money to do anything he wanted to do. He could go anywhere that he wanted to go." Drew explained, "And, And.. well, to a little boy with nothing but a Budew," Drew shrugged, "I dunno.. It.." Drew crossed his hands and took his a deep breath, "Seemed like the better option." he finished.
May smiled softly, it was nice to hear him admit to everything.
"You cant tell anyone about this okay." Drew suddenly leaned towards her, "It would just ruin my whole reputation."
"Aaah." May rolled her eyes playfully, "We wouldn't want that."
"Well," Drew shrugged quite seriously, "A fake reputation is all a man has."
May laughed lightly and Drew joined her.
May giggled once more and turned to face Drew. She looked into his eyes as he looked down at her. For a few seconds they stayed like that, staring into each others eyes.
Then Drew coughed and scrambled up quickly, "Well.. I should" He started and looked around, "I should, I should.. uhh" his gaze landed on the fire place, "I should go get some more firewood."
What is wrong with you? Derek Hadwinn never stutters. Drew cursed himself.
But you're not Derek Hadwinn to her anymore are you? You're Drew Hayden and You'll always be. A voice inside him nagged him. He sighed.
May just watched him go with a smile on her face. Drew was about to walk into the woods when May called out to him, "Drew?"
"Yeah?" Drew turned around quickly to look at May.
"For the record." May intertwined her hands together and played with her fingers nervously, "I like Drew Hayden MUCH better than Derek Hadwinn."
Drew smiled at her and held the hand she had healed, "Well, you'd be the first. But thanks." He turned around and headed into the trees, examining his healed hand and May bit her lip happily.
"Weeellll!" A voice suddenly screeched behind May, "I though he'd never leave."
"Mother?" May's face twisted in shock and confusion as she turned around to be greeted by her mother.
"Hello dear." Marraine said in a sickly sweet tone as she came to May and hugged her.
"Bu- But- H-How did you find me?" May strutted, still in shock.
"Oh it was easy," Marraine said nonchalantly releasing her daughter, "I just listened for the sound of complete and utter betrayal and followed that."
May sighed and closed her eyes, "Mother.." she started.
"We're going home May." Marraine said firmly grabbing May from her shoulders, "Now." She grabbed May's hand and proceeded to drag her away.
"Y- You don't understand." May protested, "I've been on this incredible journey," May started happily taking Marraine's hand in both of hers, "And I've seen and learned so much." May smiled softly, "I- I even met someone."
"Yes." Marraine said breezily, "The wanted thief. I'm so proud." She grabbed May's hand and started to drag her again, "Come on May."
"Mother.. Wait!" May pulled her hand you of her grasp, "I-I think.." she looked down as her mother turned to look at her, "I think he likes me." May finished.
"Likes you? Please May!" Marraine shook her head, "That's demented!"
"But mother, I.." May tried to explain.
"This is why you never should have left." Marraine walked behind her.
May breathed out in frustration.
"Dear, this whole romance that you've invented just proves you're too naive to be here." Marraine told her holding May's shoulders from the back.
May looked unsure at her mother and then looked away with a frown.
"Why would he like you? Come on now really." Marraine circled around her and grabbed her hands.
"Look at you!" She grabbed May' hair and held it up, "You think that he's impressed?"
"Dont be a dummy!" Marraine walked to a space between two trees and held out her arms as May looked on in determination.
"Come with mummy." She placed her arms over her cheast, "Motheeeeeeeeeer..." she started.
"NO!" May said firmly.
Suddenly the atmosphere seemed to tighten. It was as if it grew darker all of a sudden.
"No..?" Marraine repeated in shock, "Oh.." she recovered fast.
"I see how it is then." Her face turned to contempt.
"May knows best, May's so mature now." She started walking towards May with one hand on her waist, "Such a clever grown up miss."
"May knows best." Marraine patted her head, "Fine if you're so sure then-" she flicked a finger across her cheek, "-Go ahead and give him this!" She pulled out the satchel from her cape.
"How did you-?" May's blue eyes widened.
"THIS!" She exclaimed taking out the crown from the satchel, "Is why he's here, don't let him deceive you!" She tossed it over to May, "Give it to him and you'll see." May caught it deftly.
"I will." She shouted, belief flooding through her.
"Trust me my dear," Marraine seemed to scoff, "That's how fast he'll leave you." she snapped her fingers to demonstrate, "I wont say I told you so!" She threw her hands up for emphasis.
"No MAY knows best." She got into May's face and flung her arms in frustration, "So if he's such a dream boat." She walked behind May and leaned on her, "Then go and put hm to the TEST!"
"If he's lying.." Marraine floated away from May, "Dont come crying..."
"Mother... wait!" May stretched out a hand.
"Motheeeeeeeeeeerrr, knows best." She flung her cape around herself and disappeared.
And May was left standing there in the middle of the forest, unsure and desperate. She looked down at the crown left in her hands and the satchel her mother had handed to her and held a hand to her forehead.
Suddenly a voice floated down to her, "So...!" May panicked, "Can I ask you something?" Drew's voice came to her seeming a little far away as of the moment.
May dared behind a tree, stuffed the crown into the satchel and kept it there and dashed back.
Drew emerged from the trees carrying a pile of logs, "Is there any chance that I'm gonna get super strength in my hand?" He asked while walking towards her.
May had her back to him and was pretending to be lost in though.
"Because I'm not gonna lie, that would be stupendous." Drew smirked. He then noticed May.
"Hey..? You okay?" He asked softly, the pile of logs still in his hand.
"What?" May pretended to be surprised, "Oh sorry, just lost in thought I guess."
Drew looked at her for a minute then shrugged, "I mean here's the thing super human good looks, I've always had them. Born with it." He bent down to put the sticks in the flame.
May zoned out as he continued on and looked at he satchel behind the tree.
Behind the bushes, Butch and James stepped out to get to them. Marraine held out a hand to stop them.
"Patience boys.." She purred, "All good things to those who wait." Her eyes gleamed maliciously as the Rocket brothers submitted to her command.
