"Peter!" Aunt Mai exclaimed. "What happened to your face?"
Peter put a hand to his bruised cheek, the one where he got punched by Cheshire. "Oh you know New York," Peter said casually. "It's full of muggers and I just wasn't that lucky tonight."
Aunt Mai grabbed his face with her hands, examining his face. "Oh dear, that looks like a particularly bad one. I'll get you some ice. Why don't you go lay down in bed?"
Peter nodded and headed upstairs to his room. He lazily opened his door and collapsed onto his bed. He was so exhausted. He didn't think fighting assassins would take so much effort. Its days like these that make him wonder why he became Spiderman in the first place. It puts so much more stress and exhaustion on him than life already has. No longer than a second after Peter dropped on his bed, Aunt Mai came with a baggie full of ice and softly placed it on his cheek. "I'm going to go to bed. I've had a long day. Don't stay up too late and take the ice pack off your cheek before you fall asleep. I don't want you to get an ice burn," Aunt Mai instructed as she kissed his forehead.
"G'night Aunt Mai.." he replied groggily.
Harry Osborn noticed Peter's banged up face the moment he saw him walking towards him. "Dude what happened?"
"The city streets don't agree with me, if you get what I mean."
"Geez, sorry to hear that. You going to be okay though?"
"Yeah I'll be fine; it's just a bruise after all."
"Gwen is going to kill you though," Harry laughed.
Peter sighed. "I know, and it wasn't even my fault. I guess that's what you get when you have a control freak as a friend."
"Now I hope you aren't talking about me," a voice said from behind them.
Both boys turned around to see an angry blond with her hands on her hips. Harry jabbed his thumb at his best friend and said, "His words, not mine."
She pursed her lips and gave a little 'mmhmm' before directing her attention to Peter's bruise. "Peter what the hell is that?"
"You know I'm not really sure, but I think my aunt called it a 'bruise'."
Gwen punched him in the arm and replied, "Don't be sassy with me. How did you get it? Did you get beat up again?"
"What? No! Well, technically yes. It was just a mugging."
"Just a mugging…" she whispered unbelievingly. "Just stay out of trouble for once. Is that so hard to ask?"
"When it's Peter, yes." Harry answered
"Right," she said. "Come on, let's get to class."
"Yeah, before we get mugged." Harry joked
Peter followed his friends and said, "I'm getting the feeling that you don't believe that I got mugged."
"Well considering all the other times that you said you that you got 'mugged', it makes us start to wonder how many times a person can be mugged without knowing who the attacker was."
"It was dark!" Peter tried
"Then I suggest you walk under some street lights," Gwen retorted.
"Sometimes I really hate you guys."
"The feeling is mutual," Harry smiled. "So when you are ready to tell us where you do get all of these injuries, we're here."
"Yeah I know, and the same goes for the two of you! Speaking of which, anything either of you would like to tell me?" Peter asked. He was hoping for Harry to answer. He was hoping that he would mention something about his father. Just a little something.
Gwen shrugged her shoulders saying that she didn't have to say anything. Harry didn't say anything. "Harry?" Gwen asked
"It's nothing. Just that dad is acting even stranger than usual."
Peter pressed on. "How so?"
Harry rubbed the back of his neck and responded. "I don't know. He's just acting strange. He's getting home at like three in the morning without an explanation and every time I ask him about it he just glares at me."
Gwen put a comforting hand on his shoulder and Peter said, "Maybe he's just out partying…I guess."
Harry shook his head. "He comes home with injuries, like you. He thinks I don't notice them, but I do."
"What do you think he is doing?" Gwen asked
"I honestly don't know, but it's nothing good. He's snapping at me more than usual."
"He's not…" Peter trailed off. He knew what Wally's dad did to him, and he'd be damned if it happened to his best friend.
Harry just gave a little laugh and said, "No, he never went that far. I know he never would, no matter how short tempered he is. He just gets frustrated at every single detail of just about anything. It's like he thinks one mistake will ruin everything. It's strange."
Not that strange. Peter knew what was going on, but now he knows that Mr. Osborn is planning something. He has to find out. He doesn't know what it is, but whatever it is could put Harry in danger if something goes wrong. Maybe he's just being paranoid, but it could happen and Peter doesn't want to make that a possibility. "Anyway, I don't want to talk about it anymore. So do you guys think you could hang out after school?" Harry asked. They both agreed and for once, Peter thought they were going to have a normal day. It would've been nice for a change, but of course, that's never really an option for Peter anymore.
The three friends sat together in the kitchen of the Osborn's residence, which was located above Oscorp. They were waiting for the popcorn to be done so they could go watch a movie. Gwen and Peter sat on the bar stools at the island in the middle of the kitchen while Harry leaned against the counter next to the microwave. "So Pete, how's Aunt Mai?" he asked
"She's fine, but a little stressed out. She's still deciding how to pay the bills."
"Pete you know I could always-"
"I know," Peter said, interrupting Harry. "But we can't take your money. It's nice of you to offer, but neither Aunt Mai nor I feel like it's the right thing to do. We'll manage. We always do."
Harry nodded. "Okay, but if you need anything, I can help. I've got plenty of money that I don't need."
The microwave beeped and the popcorn was done. Thank god for that distraction. Harry emptied the popcorn into a bowl and the three of them traveled into the living room, scrolling on Demand for any good movies. While Gwen was searching, Harry asked, "So what did M.J. think about your bruise?"
"She said it added to my image of being a bad boy."
Harry couldn't help but laugh and said, "What bad boy image? The only thing bad about you is when you get and A- on a science paper."
Peter glared, "That was harsh and uncalled for. I can be a bad boy! I…I got in that fight when I got mugged! Hence the bruised face! I'm a bad boy!"
"Yeah but it looks like the mugger won," Gwen commented.
Peter frowned as both of his friends laughed. He was about to give another snarky comment when his comlink went off. "Robin to Spiderman: Have you seen the news?"
Peter grabbed his phone and looked at it, pretending to be reading a text message. "Oh hey, my friend just texted me to turn on the news. Something interesting must be happening."
Gwen flipped to the news channel where there was a live report about an attack on New York City. "It seems that Green Goblin is racing through the city, leaving a trail of destruction as he goes along. We are not sure of his intentions, but it seems as though he is looking for something, or someone. He is currently-"
Peter tuned out the rest of the newscast. He had to go and stop him. Now there was no debate on whether to bring him in or not. He will. He is hurting others and could possibly hurt Harry if he doesn't stop now. It was for the best… for everyone. Peter stood up and announced, "I'm going home to make sure Aunt Mai is okay."
"Why don't you just call her," Gwen pleaded. "I don't think it's safe for you to go out there."
Gwen's right." Harry agreed. "You could get in this Green Goblin guy's path. Stay here where it's safe until it's over."
"I can't. I have to make sure she's okay. Besides, I don't want her to be alone in a time like this."
Gwen gave Peter a hug, and Harry gave him a brief one before saying, "Be careful. Call us when you get home so that we know that you're okay."
Peter nodded and sprinted out of Harry's house. As soon as he got out the front door, he turned right into an alley way and put on his Spiderman costume. "Spiderman to Robin: I saw the news and I'm going after him now."
"Do you need any help?"
"Nah I'm good."
"Okay, well if you do just radio me and we'll send someone over."
"Roger that Rob."
Peter started to crawl on the building next to him and climbed all the way to the top, where he shot out a web and started flying through the city. He could see smoke from a damaged building and knew that Goblin was either there or have passed there. He shot web after web until he reached the location to see that nothing was there but ruins. He sighed sadly, knowing that there were probably people in that building that didn't make it and continued down the path of destruction, trying to catch up to Mr. Osborn.
Peter quickly shot webs out of his arm onto the nearest building and fly down the street. He had to catch up to Mr. Osborn as fast as he could. He didn't want anyone else to get hurt. At this point, Peter wasn't even sure if Mr. Osborn was Green Goblin. I mean, he knew it was Norman Osborn in the suit, but maybe he wasn't aware of what he was doing when he was Green Goblin. That was the only glimmer of hope Peter had for Mr. Osborn. He hoped it was like that and he isn't doing this voluntarily. He gave Peter so much and was always so nice to him; he'd hate to see him go down like this. He'd hate to think that he was capable of this.
As Peter continued to follow the trail of destruction, he noticed something. This was leading towards Oscorp, or it's generally area. Peter didn't know whether this was a bad or good thing. It could be good that Goblin is done and is going to return to Norman Osborn again, or it could mean that Harry and Gwen are in danger because Goblin could still be on his adrenaline rush and hurt them by accident.
Peter forced himself to move faster, and soon enough, he saw Goblin in site. He also saw Oscorp in site. Spiderman frantically shot a web at Green Goblin, and it stuck to his arm, stopping him from throwing another bomb. Goblin turned around to face Spiderman, and tugged at the web attached to his arm, sending Spiderman hurling towards him. Goblin slammed his fist into Peter's face when he reached him and sent him spiraling down to the ground. Peter shot another web to the bottom of his board though, and flung himself back up to kick him in the stomach.
Osborn was still on his board though and was pushed back. He looked around to find Spiderman but didn't see him anywhere in sight. He knew he was around here somewhere, and he knew he could hear him. "Got scared of me boy?"
Spiderman, who was hanging on the bottom of Goblin's board stuck his hand out and shot a web at Goblin's eyes. He was now blinded, but he knew where Spiderman was. He started moving forward again, at top speed, trying to shake him off. Peter climbed back on top and tried to steady his balance. He went to go punch Goblin out, but Goblin realized he was there and grabbed his fist. He then stopped moving on his board and flung Peter forward, away from him. Peter was tumbling through the air when he crashed through a glass window of Oscorp. Spiderman groggily stood up and rubbed the back of his head. Man that hurt! He finally realized where he was and looked up to see Harry and Gwen staring wide eyed at him.
He was about to say hi to them when his spidey senses went off. He moved his body out of the way to see a little bomb fly past him. He quickly grabbed onto it with a web and threw it back at Goblin. He turned to his friends and said, "Get out of here, it isn't safe."
With that, he shot two webs against the frame of the now shattered window to make a sling shot, and shot himself out of Oscorp towards Goblin. He landed on Goblin's board where he quickly tried to punch him, but Goblin ducked. Goblin returned his own fire of punches, but Peter hastily dodged them all. "Come on Mr. Osborn," Peter tried. "I know it's you in there. Just stop this and we can talk."
Peter threw jumped over his back and went to go deliver another punch but Goblin blocked it. Goblin then got in a lucky punch on Peter and he almost fell off the board, before Goblin caught him. He had Peter by the throat and held him in the air. "Mr. Osborn…please…" Peter gasped out.
It was getting harder to breath and Peter struggled for air. Peter raised a hand and shot a web in Goblin's face. He let Peter go and he began falling down to the ground. On his way down Peter was trying to catch his breath and lazily shot a web last minute at a street light. He sung forward but then soon crashed into the building near it. At least he didn't splatter on the pavement. He was breathing heavily and slowly sat up to a sitting position and put his finger to his ear. "Hey Rob…" Peter gasped. "I could use some…help down here."
"Help is on the way. I sent Superboy, Miss M, and KF to help. You okay?"
"I've been better, just tell them to hurry up," Peter said as he got up to engage his best friend's dad once again.
