The American
Authors Note: It is Saturday, September 12, 2015 and I just finished editing this chapter. It's weird to have these 5 page chapters when in 'Fight for Kisses' I've got 10-12 page chapters at a minimum. Nevertheless, it is edited. Now that the American is here, we can really kick things off!
Let me know what you think and have a fantastic day!
Sirius' Dream
Sirius Black was Sirius Black, right? This basic question was exactly what Sirius was running through his mind as he sat at the Gryffindor table after being sorted there. Seriously though, Sirius Black was the first born child of the Black family's newest generation. He was destined to be a Slytherin, a muggle born hater, and general scum. He was the heir to the title, Lord Black, and would lead his family to yet another generation of rule. So why, why on Merlin's pants, was he sitting there at the Gryffindor table. Because you've been sorted here you twit…. No-one was talking to him because as soon as he was sorted even the muggle-borns knew who he was, that was Hogwarts gossip for you, running faster than one could possibly even think of the right thing. Sirius was split, he was ecstatic that he wasn't in Slytherin; he had never gotten along with the whole 'we are the best and mostly you are scum' philosophy (not that he wasn't the best, the others just weren't necessarily scum). However, he was nervous, would anyone accept him? Or would everyone reject him, and what were his mother and father going to do? He shivered, determined these thoughts were not going to do him any good, and tried to focus on the sorting. He looked up just as "Evans, Lily" was walking up to the hat, she sat down, and after a couple seconds the hat yelled, "Better be... GRYFFINDOR!" This 'Evans, Lily' then looked over at the table and smiled right at Sirius, who smiled back. She then sat down, and looked at the girl next to Sirius, and gave an even bigger smile. The girl next to Sirius started using sign language, and Lily replied as such. He remembered her from the train ride, but hadn't spoken to her all that much and quite frankly was so surprised from the sorting that he wasn't sure he knew his own name. Sirius was very confused until the girl next to Sirius got his attention,
"Hello," Said the girl next to Sirius that had previously been conversing with Lily, "I am Aly, my buddy right here said not to assume you are a mass murderer, but honestly I am not so sure." She put out her hand regardless, and it was clear that she trusted Lily. She had a suspicious look on her face, and Sirius wasn't sure what it meant. Sure, he had seen that face before, on the parents of children he happened to be around for whatever reason, but never on the kids. Is she really 11 too? Sirius wondered, but he was 11 himself, and was quickly distracted by his own words.
"Sirius Black," Said Sirius, taking her hand and shaking it, "and I'm not so sure either, so I guess we'll have to wait and find out." He smiled, and it was clear that he was making a joke.
While Lily smiled and chuckled a little, Aly only nodded, "We will. So, all I know is that prefect over there-" Aly pointed to a sixth year prefect, Edward Jones (not that either of them knew his name, or that he would be the victim of the first Marauder prank, at this point). "-Told me you were a bad person, so I'll let you introduce yourself."
Sirius nodded, nervous to face the older boy. He wasn't happy to already have enemies, and in one sorting he'd isolated himself from the entire school. "Well, I come from a family of Slytherin." He said, trying to explain to her that the older boy's logic was sound. It made since for him to distrust him, and to warn other's away. "Of course that isn't going to make you like me..." It occurred to him that if he wanted to make friends, with muggle borns especially, that he needed to not point out that he came from a crazy family of muggle-born it occurred to him that they may not know that Slytherins hated muggle borns.
"No," Said Aly, agreeing with him. "No, it's not." Lily gave her a look, but then turned to Sirius with a bright smile. it was clear that Lily, the same girl that had argued with a bunch of 5th years on the train, wasn't going to judge him.
"Yea, well," Said Sirius, awkward and drowning in his own inability to make friends. Why do they keep talking to me? "I like Quidditch?" Quidditch, yeah, that's something that everyone, even mudb- muggleborns like.
"What?" Asked Aly, confused and starting on the food that had just appeared on their table. It appeared that she really had no idea what he was talking about, but she was quick to the chase as she started serving herself her meal. "What's that?"
"WHAT?" replied a very surprise Sirius Black, "How can you not know what Quidditch is?"
"My parents aren't magical," Said Aly, and it occurred to Sirius that he had already known they were muggle borns. You had assumed, but then again, you were right…. Does that make it right? Okay?
"Oh, so you're a muggle born?" Asked Sirius, biting back mudblood, he used that at home because his parents did but he heard a very shrill voice yelling at a very pale, black haired kid for saying mudblood, so he determined it was a bad word. He tried to act as if he hadn't already thought of it, hadn't already assumed it.
"I guess," Said Aly, shrugging, the three were eating now. Lily talking to a 3rd year whom she sat next to about Charms, Aly slowly relishing the taste of the marvelous food in front of her, and Sirius eating like he'd been starved his whole live. "Sirius, have you been told yet that you eat like a pig?"
"Yes," Said Sirius, "Much more times than I can count."
Aly laughed, finally calming down around Sirius, and they ate. Sirius informed her on Quidditch and she pondered whether or not 'her sister Lily' would have liked to play the game. They talked for the entire meal, and on the way back to the dormitories the three of them, Lily, Sirius, and Aly, talked about Quidditch as well. Sirius didn't remember much about Lily, because once she calmed down Aly outshined her easily. Aly was more.. out there. She spoke more, she was louder, and she stood out from the group. Lily, for her part, was kind of shy.
Sirius' dream faded, going farther back in his memory to when he was five. When he was small, and weak - when his hair was short.
"Sirius Black you had better be ready to go!" His mother's shrill voice yelled up to a five year old mess. Sirius ran down the stairs and shoved his shoe on, thankfully ready when he got down, unfortunately, his mother slapped his face anyway. "You were not fast enough, be quicker next time. Do you want to bring shame to the Black family?"
"Yes, mother, no, mother," Said a respectful Sirius, too calm and collected for a five year old boy. The child followed his mother to the living room as she carried a three year old Regulus Black, who was just now starting to truly converse with others. They were on their way to their distant cousins, the Potters, for a political party, well a Christmas party, but very political. The Potters were not only hosting but providing child care as well, so the Blacks did not leave their children in the care of Kretcher. It was a sign of good faith, to allow their children to inter-mingle with the blood traitors.
"Now," Said Sirius' mother, putting Regulus down and turning to speak to both of her children. "You are not to speak to any children you have not met before, bunch of rotten blood traitors they are, and I don't want them spoiling you."
"Yes ma'am," Said Sirius. He didn't think about it, his mother said not to talk to them, his mother said they were bad, and his mother knew everything. She was his mother. She'd known that the reason they could do magic was because they were Blacks. She'd known left from right, and told them the answers (however impatiently) to the questions of the world. She had it all worked out.
"I will go before you," Continued his mother, still speaking much like a computer, with no loving tone or sweet smile that most children expect from their mothers. "When you get into the floo the Potters have a special floo set up for the toddlers, so say 'Potter Child' and you will be where you need to be."
"Yes ma'am," Said Sirius as she floo'ed away ('Potter's Nursery'). She hadn't reminded him to be a good boy, or that she loved him, because he would behave. There wasn't a doubt about it. of course he would be a good boy, he was a Black.
Sirius then got into the floo, with his handful of floo powder, and spoke, "Potter Child." He closed his eyes, and when he opened them he was in a small room with a couple of children. Sirius stepped out of the Floo, not tripping at all out of practice (wouldn't want to disgrace the Black name with a fall), and when he did not recognize anyone, he went to a chair and sat down. He didn't do anything for a second, and then he saw a small bookshelf with children's books in it. He picked out a book on stars and started reading. He loved stars and the Black family tradition to name all of their children after stars.
"How'd you do that?" Asked one child who walked up to him in wonder, his black hair was everywhere and his hazel eyes were filled with awe, the boy clearly wasn't as good of a reader as Sirius because he was looking at the book, about half words and half pictures, like it was written in an advanced and unreadable language. He seemed awed, but he also seemed honest, and kind. It was an impression that Sirius hadn't gotten from anyone. He wasn't talking to Sirius in fear or contempt, but curiosity and mild friendship.
"I'm not supposed to talk to blood traitors," Said a very five year old Sirius, turning away from the awed boy. He wasn't going to disobey his mother. His voice was stubborn, despite the fact that he really wanted to make some friends other than his cousins who teased him all of the time.
"Who said that?" He asked, looking mildly insulted. He stood up as tall as a five year old could and put his hand on his chest, "I'm James Potter, my mum and da are hosting the party, so you have to talk to me!"
Sirius thought, he couldn't argue with that. Not talking to the host of the party would just be rude, and weren't the Potters of good blood? Over the course of the party James and Sirius became friends, they talked about their quidditch and such, and two weeks later, after Sirius continuing to ask to see James, his mother snapped.
"SIRIUS BLACK I FORBID YOU TO MENTION THE POTTERS EVER AGAIN," Yelled his mother, "THEY ARE BLOOD TRAITORS AND ENEMIES OF THE DARK LORD!" Sirius didn't understand what she meant. He didn't know that he was supposed to be supporting an upcoming change in regime.
Sirius was a good child, he did what he was told, never spoke out of term, and always spoke respectfully. In fact, his father was not even sure he knew the word he spoke next, "No." Honestly, it was an earth shattering change in the Black household.
That night Sirius got one of the worst beatings of his life, and since it was a punishment, they were given no medical attention and Sirius bared the scars forever. No ditany to close the wounds, no blood replenishing potion to make up for the loss, and no bone growth potion. For the rest of his life he sported a slightly popped out pinkey on his left hand, as it had been broken and his inherent accidental magic could only do so much.
A real life Sirius scrunched up his face in pain, reliving everything in real life. There was no part of him that regretted his actions. His teenaged self knew that that was the moment he had left the Black path, and he would do it again without hesitation.
In an instant, they all woke up from the coma, they were all sweaty, and it looked to have been about ten hours. Lily looked outside at the sunset and blinked away the tears, her eyes weren't used to being open and she had relived the worst time of her life: when she had found out that Aly was dead.
"What the hell," Asked Remus, angry and confused. He'd just woken up, sweaty and exhausted, from the weirdest dream he'd had in his entire life. "Did you guys do to me, and why do I remember making out with my mum?"
"Prank gone wrong," Said James, though he was remarkably confused about the making out with his mum part, he figured that he must have done an actual, seriously fucked up, dream. He had no idea what Remus had gone through in his coma, and he hadn't had a normal start to dreams.
"Give me five, my furry friend!" Said Sirius, standing up to hi-five Remus, who tried the same, they then fell on top of Lily and James, really too exhausted to be moving. It was a particularly crushing duo, the two being the largest and heaviest two in the group.
"Ugh," Said Lily, painfully accepting the reality of a werewolf and Sirius atop her. "Why do I always end up on bottom?"
Sirius laughed, "I don't know... Want to be... dominated?" That was just too easy, he was clearly proud of himself for the joke. No one was surprised or impressed with Sirius' joke.
Remus groaned, particularly unimpressed and tired from the coma ordeal. "Why are you always so perverted?"
"How do I explain this to you?" Asked Sirius, rubbing his hand on his chin with mock thought. "Ah, I've got it!" Said Sirius excitedly, and then he began 'explaining'. It had something to do with a grand and honorable tradition of wizarding kind to ensure reproduction. It was also completely wrong.
"So," Said Lily, turning to look at James. She wasn't thinking about her kidnapping or the warning that came with it, she was enjoying her time with James without thinking. She wasn't thinking about anything because she was enjoying her time with James, because with James it was effortless and required no thought. She gave a smile before she spoke, "Are you actually going to listen to Sirius?"
James laughed, loud and true, before replying. "No, you?"
Lily also laughed, "Nah," She said. There was a short awkward silence. It occurred to Lily that, because of her, their time together had been anything but effortless as of late. "James, I'm sorry." Said Lily, before James could say anything she interrupted, needing to get out what she had to say. She needed to apologize before he told her not to, because if he did she never would and she knew she ought to. "No, let me finish. I've been treating you badly, and not telling you why. And... And I can't tell you why now, just know I really like you but I just... can't." James' face was very confused, and he wished she had said nothing. Now, not only had she not changed anything, but he was curious and hurt that she couldn't tell him. They'd been friends for years!
"What?" He asked, then he sighed, realizing that at least she liked him. He grinned like a 4th year on Valentine's day. It didn't matter if she was being weird, emotions did that, and she had emotions, special emotions, just for him. Then, smiling like a mad man, James kissed her. He knew she'd said that she couldn't, but what harm could a kiss do? Besides, he knew that kissing her was all he wanted to do right now. He just wanted to feel close after their period of awkward silences and fear.
"...And that is why." Sirius and Remus weren't paying a lick of attention to the teens beneath them, because Sirius had just finished explaining a rather elaborate and entertaining reasoning behind his perversion.
Remus laughed, thoroughly amused by Sirius' antics. While Lily and James were prone to ignoring Sirius' long explanations, Remus loved them. They were surprisingly ful a wit, and he bent what was real and ture in the world to make them surprisingly convincing. "Okay, now get off." He spoke seriously now, annoyed that he was in the middle of a teen sandwich. He didn't have any desire to be surrounded by the bodies of his friends, in fact what he really wanted was a shower.
"No." Sirius said, "Nu-hu." He was enjoying being the top dog, he was a dog, so it only fit. It seemed to annoy Remus, and that in and of itself was a good reason. Besides, what else would he do if not annoy someone right now?
"Yes." Remus said, deciding to try and reason with Sirius in a very basic manner. Reasoning with Sirius was difficult, but maybe if he made it particularly simple.
"No." Sirius replied, much like a child, as he grinned ear to ear. He wasn't going to give in just because Remus said yes.
"YES!" Remus exclaimed, frustrated at Sirius' child like impulses. A part of him registered that the two beneath him were oddly non-participatory, but he was more focused on getting out of their human Sirius off of him. "C'mon, geroff!"
"NO!" Sirius replied, yelling much like Remus. He laughed as he did so, proving only that he was having a grand ole time. His smile was wide, and his laugh barking.
It was in that moment that Remus attacked Sirius, as to get him off of him, and ended up pinning him on the ground and huffing, because he was still drained from the coma. It was also at this point that Lily and James' kiss turned into a snog, Lily facing him in his lap as he sat criss crossed and she sat rather un-lady-like in her dress. Lastly, it was at this point that a pink haired American girl walked into the room.
"Kinky." She said with her very American accent, winking, and scaring everyone in the room. She gave a 'not bad' facial impression before grinning wildly, as if she best thing she could have walked in in just happened.
Lily and James separated with haste, just in time for her to see nothing but Lily atop him, but not kissing. Remus got off of Sirius, and everyone stood up, "Who are you?" Asked Sirius, very confused. How had she gotten up here? She wasn't a student, she was American for Merlin's sake. Who is this girl? Far from scared, Sirius was curious and attached. Something about her grabbed his attention and while everyone else seemed worried, he was curious.
