Chapter 10: Repairs Complete
Delsin and I traveled over the city on another Brick Slab, with me jokingly singing 'A Whole New World' while Delsin laughed his ass off. I'd just finished the second verse when we touched down close to the market. We dismounted and I absorbed the brick before joining Delsin as he looked around.
"Let's see, if I had one of these things on, I would want to get it off as fast as possible, because - well, they're butt-ugly. And I guess because they just scream, 'attack me, I'm a suspected Bio-Terrorist!' So... you'd want someplace private to get undressed... with a door that locks... a place to sit while you changed... a porta-potty would be perfect. You could kill two birds with one stone."
As much as I hate them, it sounds plausible, I thought, glancing toward one of the blue, plastic pseudo-toilets. Delsin stepped toward it, paused, then reached for the handle - only for the door to burst open, causing him to fall backwards as one of the suspects, still wearing his vest, took off running.
"Hey, wait! We're not with the DUP! Come back!" I called out, chasing after him. He didn't get very far, however, before an Angel swooped down and grabbed him, lifting him into the air and away from us. "Hey! We saw him first!" I yelled, quickly creating a Brick Slab and lifting off, ignoring Delsin's angry yells as he tried to keep up.
...
"GODDAMNIT!" I roared in anger as I kicked a wall. I'd lost the Angel after only a few minutes of following it, along with its live cargo. Behind me, Delsin's phone rang.
"Hey, Delsin. I'm in the Lantern District, you still here?" Reggie asked.
"Yeah, about time you made it across." Delsin grouched.
"What the hell's going on? I leave you on your own for a couple of hours and suddenly there's angels dive-bombing people!"
"It's probably something to do with the Conduit we're looking for," I suggested, my tantrum having drained away my anger, "we set free a bunch of prisoners the DUP were moving; maybe one of them was our guy."
"Well, lucky for you, Sheriff Reggie is here! Finding escapees is what I do."
"Well, be on the lookout for anyone in a black and yellow vest, we saw on one the ground in, ah, Hing Hay Market. Looked like a bitch to get off. Locks all over it."
"Gotta say you two, you guys are getting really good at this manhunt stuff. Maybe when we get home I'll deputize you - have a job, for once."
"Whoa, no thanks. One cop in the family is embarrasing enough." Delsin joked with a grin, his anger having subsided.
"I have a job at home already." I added, shrugging. "I was a tubing attendant for a ski resort back home." That much was true, at least - back in the real world, I worked at Campgaw.
Reggie hung up just as a group of Russian men rushed past us.
"There's one trapped on a crane! Let's go get him!" One shouted to the rest. Delsin and I glanced at each other.
"You fellas mind if we tag along?" Delsin asked as he subdued one of them with neon bindings. I did the same to another two, pinning them to the floor as the brick fused with the ground. The rest of the Russians turned and immediately pulled pistols on us. I launched a Brick Wave to knock them off-balance, then rushed in and delivered a powerful strike to one of them, sending him flying backwards, unconscious. We turned to the remaining few, who continued to shoot at us as we approached.
...
"So, where do you think these guys were headed?" Delsin asked as he glanced around at all the trapped Russians.
"Well, they mentioned a crane, so maybe a construction site?" I suggested, totally guessing.
"Well, it would make sense." Delsin replied, shrugging. "So, let's go see if you're right!"
...
It took only a few minutes for us to reach the construction site, which was swarming with Akurans like ants around an anthill. Fortunately for us, they were just as easy to squash.
Delsin used Lightspeed to climb the side of the crane while I watched from down below, ready to try and catch the escapee if he fell. My eyes widened as I saw the man leap from the crane - only to be snatched out of the air by another Angel.
"Get back here!" I yelled, giving chase. I didn't want to lose another one - one was bad enough. Delsin Used Lightspeed to try and keep up as I sped up my Brick Slab and shot at any Angels that tried to stop me. Unfortunately, I didn't get very far before one of the Angels I missed kamikazed me and smashed my Brick Slab. I dropped like a rock with an angry yell as the Angel vanished in a burst of blue pixels.
As I landed, I heard Delsin and Reggie talking.
"Whoever this Angel-maker is, he's pissing me off. They keep grabbing all the Conduits and I can't keep up."
"So, same old same old?" Reggie joked. I snorted as I got back to my feet, blasting an Angel that tried to interrupt.
"And if the Angels aren't bad enough, there's these gangs of surly dudes out hunting the vestoids, too."
"Those would be Akurans. An angry gang of bullies who like to cause trouble around the International District. You should stay clear of them."
"Even if I really, really want to punch them in the face?" I asked with a groan, still recovering from my fall.
"Yes, Marshall, even if you want to punch them in the face." Reggie replied. "Anyway, meet me by the porta-potty in the Hing Hay Market. I got a crazy idea."
"Alright man, I'll meet you by the porta-pot..." He trailed off before speaking again. "Listen man, I don't know what-"
"You can trust me. I'm a cop." Reggie cut him off.
"You seem to love pointing that out, don't you?" I added before the line went dead.
