Chapter 8- She knows?
Previously...
Edward, please stop, you're scaring her. You don't want to do this. Please, come back! Come back to me brother. Stop breathing, Edward or you'll regret this for the rest of your existence. Stop breathing Edward or you end up killing her!
The last of her thoughts were almost a scream inside my head. That brought me back to my senses. I immediately stopped breathing and ran out of the house in the opposite direction of Bella who had become my personal hell on earth as fast as I could.
I couldn't tell how long I had been running, hours probably. But I needed to get away, away from her- Bella. I couldn't really pinpoint where I was exactly. There were thick overgrown trees making it dark and creepy. There was heavy moss around me; I was most likely in the deeper part of the huge forest. Figuring that I was far enough from the most enticing torture– here in the forest– I was most likely safe from her and her scent, I took in huge gulps of as much fresh air as I could.
Looking around I found myself trying to decipher my strength. I knew that if I wanted to, I could destroy the whole menacing looking forest. I could tear apart the trees as if they were matchsticks and ground the heavy looking rocks to grain in a matter of seconds. But In spite of all this, I felt week. Like, I was not the destroyer but someone who could be destroyed. And not by some menacing creature, no, but a small, delicate, human fragile girl. The concept was actually laughable, but I couldn't find any humor in it.
An insignificant human girl had the power to destroy me completely and I had no idea how to wrap my head around it.
"Edward, are you alright?"
"I 'am now."
"I don't see you destroying the forest anymore."
"I went for a run instead."
"I guess that helped…?"
I was sitting on some huge boulder surrounded by trees on three sides and one side by water, on the phone with Alice. At least there was no death and destruction surrounding me right now. I had been destroying the trees as well as draining wildlife for the past two days. It was a miracle my phone survived.
"That and the fresh untainted air."
"I've seen you kill more in the past three days than that one time in the past."
"I don't know if you can understand this, Alice and I don't really know how to explain. I've never felt this way before. She's like the devil incarnate to me. Whenever she is near me, I have this desperate need to sink my teeth into her, drain her of that sweet ecstasy. I crave her blood like no other, Alice. I can't think straight. I don't realize what I'm doing when I'm already sunk into a crouch ready to pounce on her like the monster I am."
"You're not a monster Edward." Alice said in an exasperated tone.
"What do you see, Alice?"
"Not much of anything, Edward. In the past two days all I saw was you trying to kill her in some form or another..."
"And now?"
"Some glimpses that I'm seeing are weird…" She said in a confused tone.
"What do you mean by that?"
"What I'm seeing are some unconnected flashes, Edward, there's nothing concrete."
"What exactly do you see, Alice?"
I wanted to know what she was not telling me. And she was definitely not telling me something.
"I told you, Edward, nothing concrete. I'll let you know if I see something specific, I promise."
I wish I was with her right now, I could just read her thoughts to see what she had seen. With that thought in mind, I started running towards Port A. But then another thought made my progress falter.
"Is she still there?"
"Um… no."
"Alice, she saw me lose control."
"Yaaa... I don't think that would be a problem." She said each word dragging slowly.
"What do you mean by that? How could you just let her go? I mean what did you say to her?"
"Umm… we kinda talked to each other after you ran away… and um… she knows..."
"What do you mean she knows? Alice, are you trying to tell me that she knows we are Vampires? I asked appalled.
"Dammit, Alice, is it safe that she knows? And what about the Volturi?
"Ya…and this is one conversation that I want to have face to face, so I'll wait until you get here."
"I'm on my way."
"See you when you get here."
I clicked the phone shut and ran at full speed.
Wonderful. I thought, just great!
Not only that she has the most enticing scent but she also knows about vampires. Perfect. I thought sarcastically as I ran.
But how did she know? Had she run into Vampires before as well? That was not surprising given her scent, but how was she alive if she had?
Oh... and not to mention what she had done in that ally… I needed a lot of questions answered. It seems that this Bella is something else entirely. Yes, I needed to get to Alice, and soon.
