Chapter 10: Masquerade
Italics are flashbacks
"No. There is nothing you can say that could possibly make me change my mind either," Nicolette stated firmly as she finished her chicken burger. Katherine glared at her, "Oh come on, Nico. It will be just like old times."
"No."
"I thought you wanted to piss Elena off?"
"Not on those terms. She may be annoying and controlling, but she is still my adoptive little sister."
Katherine sighed in exasperation, "I thought we were supposed to look out for each other. We made the promise 150 years ago, remember." Nicolette blinked, "Of course I remember. Just like you remembered when you left me in Nazi occupied France during the 40s."
Nicolette walked quietly through the cold streets of Paris with a feeling of pure dread. Katherine was late for their meeting and the Gestapo would soon be starting their nightly patrol. She quickened her steps at the sounds of men approaching the side of the walkway where she was currently pacing.
She paused at their call towards her as they caught sight of her. Taking a breath she smoothed her expression into one of calm curiosity, before turning to face the approaching soldiers. The lead soldier asked as they stopped before her on the pavement.
Nicolette inclined her head respectfully before replying, "Abend, Offiziere. Their eyes brightened with curiosity at her German. After a brief span of questions, they offered to escort her to the club to prevent anything from happening to her.
The Nazi soldiers shook their heads, "Unser Vergnügen, Fräulein Vita." With that said they bid her good night as she entered into the buzzing nightclub.
Later that evening...
Nicolette shook her head with an exasperated smile on her face as the patrons of the club gave a round of applause upon hearing her name get announced. She stood up with a pointed look aimed at Pierre before joining him up on the platform that served as the club's stage.
Pierre introduced her as she got to him. He smirked at the small glare she sent in his direction as he made his way back to his place.
"Si j'avais su Pierre allait avoir moi effectuer, J'aurais arriver mieux préparés," She admitted with a pointed look aimed at the beaming man, earning a round of laughter from the other patrons. With a nod to the musicians, they began to play the interlude and she started her song,
All of the French patrons and even the German officers were on their feet and cheering as Nicolette finished her last note. Her foresty green eyes sparkled with happiness and relief as she took a bow and made her way back to her seat.
As Nicolette headed back to her apartment that evening, she had the distinct feeling of being watched. She shook herself but picked up the pace, somehow knowing that she would be safe but increasing her speed just to be safe.
Katherine shook her head in annoyance, "You can't still be mad at me about that? Klaus was onto me. Besides, I knew that you could take care of yourself and I didn't want to disappoint a certain Monsieur Rousseaux." Nicolette gave her an unamused expression, "I didn't see or hear from you for 20 years."
"I didn't realize you were counting."
"I wasn't, until it became a common occurrence."
"Ouch, that's kinda harsh Nico."
Nicolette gave her an incredulous look, causing Katherine to back track. "I just don't see why you won't help me out. We've been friends for 150 years," the 500 year old Vampire exclaimed. "Exactly. We've put 150 years into this friendship and I'm not about to see it go to hell, when you make me choose between my family and you," Nicolette replied matter-of-factually before getting back into Carlisle and driving back to the Gilbert house.
"Honestly, Nikki, I'm fine. You don't have to stay and watch over me," Jenna insisted as the pretty brunette settled into the couch next to her and handed her a steaming cup of coco. "Consider this your payback for watching over me when I fractured my ankle. Besides, I think it's safer for the town if only two Salvatores are at the party. The three of us don't have the best track record at parties and I'd much rather watch House," Nicolette explained with a shrug before huddling under the blanket, beside Jenna.
The blonde gave in with a laugh before her attention was riveted to the screen as the opening credits for 'House' began to roll across the screen.
The two of them were blissfully uncaring of the events that went down at the Masquerade as they binge-watched House. Nicolette having had deliberately turned off her phone in order to remain out of whatever scheme the Scooby Gang and Katherine were concocting.
