Chapter 10:

Thresh's POV

"Are you cool with the plan?" I ask Rue.

"Yes," she smiles, a full smile that I hardly ever see from her. It almost makes me sad to see her so desperate for revenge.

"I'm going to go get some water," I say. We had finished it all and there was a pool not far from here. She tosses me the big water container and I pull my small bottle and her water skin out of my pack.

"I'll keep watch," she tells me.

"Are you sure?" I ask uncertainly. I don't like the thought of leaving my tiny ally here, by herself, where the Careers could kill her with a swipe of their weapons.

"Positive," she says with a grin. "Katniss would've wanted me to."

"Fine. Scream if you need help, okay?" I ask.

"Okay," she says.

I dash off to the closest water supply, about a mile from our camp. It takes a while, but when I get there, I fill up my small bottle and her water skin for me, then the large water container for her. I listen for screams, nothing.

I put the iodine in the water and wait. Nothing.

After waiting the proper amount of time, I scoop up all the water and stand up. That's when I hear the screams. Rue is shrieking like she's in pain, like Katniss was shrieking

I run at full speed. The screams go on, but instead of seeming closer, they seem even farther away, like I'm never going to reach Rue. They keep going and going, until I can barely hear them, then they stop. There is no cannon though, so I keep running, desperate to make it to camp to save Rue, whatever condition she may be in. I run for what seems like ages when finally, I make it to camp. But it's too late.

Rue is already gone.
