Chapter 10

As Spencer returned home from a long day spent with Wren, she finally walked through the door not knowing what to expect from her parents. Specifically her father Peter Hastings.

"Hey guys, I'm home." Spencer called into the empty living room.

"Spencer, where the hell were you? I've been calling you nonstop and texting you but you didn't answer. Is everything okay?" Melissa asked coming in from her en suite bedroom in the barn.

"Everything is fine, I just spent the day with a friend." Spencer replied lying about the fact that the friend was her sister's ex fiancee, Wren.

"Oh okay, well next time you go on a day long trip out of the house at least let me know so I don't think something is wrong with you or my future niece or nephew." Melissa said sweetly, not exactly buying Spencer's fib, but not questioning her further.

"I'm sorry if I scared you everything with me and the baby is fine. I just needed a nice day out for once. I can't take the stress of mom and dad worrying about me and Toby nonstop, truth be told." Spencer replied smiling nervously at her sister.

"Parents always fight, trust me they care about the well being of you and the baby. I'm not really sure how dad feels about Toby, but mom kinda likes Toby. She just doesn't want you to get hurt by him, that's all." Melissa said sitting on the living room sofa across from Spencer.

"Toby is well Toby. I don't know what else to tell mom and dad anymore. Sure, he isn't exactly happy about the situation I just hope it's not the end of the world for him. I love Toby so much. He's just very nervous about this whole baby thing." Spencer replied slightly ranting about everything.

"So if I may ask who did you go to see?" Melissa inquired curiously wanting to know Spencer's secret friend.

"Umm, actually it was Wren, I didn't know how to tell you. Since he is your ex and all." Spencer confessed.

"Really? What does Wren want now?" Melissa asked confused as to why Spencer would even see Wren at all anymore.

"Funny thing, he's my assigned doctor, I just hang out with him to talk about baby related things, I swear that's all it is." Spencer replied getting nervous of Melissa's weird reaction to her confession.

"Don't worry, I know you and Toby are fine. I just don't want him trying to ruin things further with you and Toby. We didn't work out for a reason. I know he always had feelings for you." Melissa said not at all upset by Spencer's revelation about Wren.

"Guess it's a small world after all." Spencer said scoffing at Melissa unusual nonchalance about the situation at hand.

"As long as he isn't trying to woo you over to his side and make you dump Toby, we are fine. I'm glad you told me rather than just omit it completely. I like how things have changed on that end between us even if Mom and Dad still lie to you about some things." Melissa replied nicely.

"Thank God! I thought you were gonna be a train wreck about that. I guess you really are over him then." Spencer said.

"Of course! I used to love him obviously but we are still good friends. But I'm fine with the way things worked out. Me and him just weren't compatible." Melissa replied.

"I can see why now. You and Ian are perfect for each other." Spencer said giggling a little.

"I know. Truth be told, I'm glad Wren is at least there for you. He's a great doctor. He helped me out when I was pregnant before our miscarriage with Taylor." Melissa confessed.

"Really? Was he the one giving you all those great prenatal vitamins you got me?" Spencer asked curiously.

"Yep. He was the one who secretly helped me out before I knew I was even pregnant. I'm so glad he's treating you. Hopefully you won't have a miscarriage like I did though. Maybe that's why I have a weird attachment to your baby already. I really want to be an aunt even if the circumstances aren't exactly after college." Melissa said smiling at her sister.

"I hope not. I'm already attached to this baby growing in me. I know it wasn't exactly the most ideal time but I'm glad I'm pregnant. I wonder who the baby is gonna like." Spencer replied.

"Well that's great to hear. I'm glad you decided what you're gonna do." Melissa said.

"Well I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing yet, but I'm definitely not aborting my child, and I don't want to give him or her up for adoption either. I guess I will do my best and hope mom and dad will help me out along the way. I mean school is only half a semester away to graduation. So maybe we can hopefully make things work out for me and the baby before I go off to school." Spencer pointed out.

"If you go to school, taking care of a baby is hard work." Melissa pointed out grimacing.

"Maybe I can just spend a year at home taking care of the baby and do online classes. I don't want to completely give up my whole social life for my baby." Spencer said getting a little moody.

"Sorry I'm just being a bit of a realist." Melissa said.

"It's okay, I think I'm just gonna go take a nap, I've had a long day." Spencer said before ambling up and away to her bedroom, getting up off the love seat directly across from Melissa.

"Love you Spence, don't give up, things will get better once mom and dad get their crap together I swear." Melissa said sweetly as Spencer walked up the stairs to her room.

Melissa went back to the barn to get ready for bed before their parents got home.

Later on...

As soon as Peter Hastings got into the house he lied down on the couch to rest before Veronica prepared dinner for everyone.

Veronica began to make a healthy dinner of pasta and salad in the kitchen area.

"Hey mom, what are you making? I'm like dying of starvation." Spencer said coming down the stairs a few minutes after dinner was starting to cook in the crock pot.

"Pasta and salad, it'll be ready in about half an hour." Veronica replied smiling at her youngest daughter.

"Oh okay well I guess I'll go work on my history homework." Spencer said going back to her room upstairs.

"Is everything okay Spencer?" Veronica asked just as Spencer was about to start climbing the stairs.

"Yeah, why do you ask?" Spencer replied questioning her mother.

"Oh no reason. I just thought you and Toby might have not been on the best of terms because of your father warning him to stay by your side during this pregnancy." Veronica said.

"Things are fine for now. We haven't really seen eye to eye on everything about this, but I know he'll eventually change his mind, or at least I hope so." Spencer replied sighing.

"I know things are tough now sweetie, but in a few months you'll be taking care of your baby, you need to talk about things with Toby and how he will be in your life once the baby is here." Veronica said feeling nothing but love for her daughter.

"Toby doesn't want anything to do with this. I get it, I don't care, can you just drop it for now? I can't have this talk right now. Not with everything falling apart." Spencer replied before going back up to her room to lock herself away once more.

"Mom what did you say to Spencer? She locked her door and refuses to let me in." Melissa asked seriously.

"I might have pushed her too much on the whole Toby issue." Veronica said hesitantly.

"Mom! Why are you so hard on her? She's 17 okay? I get what she did was a mistake but remember when that same exact thing happened to me and you all were more supportive of me. Why can't you just do the same for her? She's just a kid." Melissa replied, ticked off at her mother for pushing the Toby issue.

"Because I don't want her going through this alone. I'm sorry. I don't know what else to do. No matter what I do for Spencer she just storms off to her room. Can you possibly talk to her and assure things are gonna be okay." Veronica said sighing.

"I'll try mom. But I can't promise she won't be mad at me by the time I'm done with fixing your mess." Melissa replied snappishly.

"Just talk to your sister, please, I don't want to make things more difficult for her." Veronica said.

"Ok mom, I'll try but I don't think she'll want to come finish her dinner after what you did." Melissa replied before heading up to Spencer's room.
