Um sorry, senior year's been rough. Hopefully I'll be pumping out more stories soon. Thanks for being patient with me. Please read and review. It means a lot to me.
I didn't sleep that night. Travis haunted me and he was all I could think about. I just kept seeing his face fall after I said I couldn't be with him.
I tossed and turned all night. I slowly watched the clock on my nightstand until it was 5 am.
I gave up on my useless pursuit of sleep and grabbed some clothes to head to the showers.
I glanced at the mirror briefly as I walked out the door and cringed. I looked like hell. I had dark bags under my eyes and my hair was a knotted mess on top of my head.
I closed my eyes taking a deep breath and stepped out. The ground was wet with the morning dew and it chilled my toes as I walked towards the showers.
Maybe it was fate, maybe it was just sheer bad luck but either way I ended up bumping into Colton.
I hit the ground spilling my clothes everywhere with my hygiene products as well. Some normal stuff like shampoo and conditioner went flying but so did some not so cool stuff… like tampons and pads. My clothes were all over the grass. Oh, and my bra was on his shoe.
"Sonofabitch." I muttered looking up at him. Upon realizing who it was I'm sure my face turned as bright red as the underwear that was lying in front of me.
"Heyyyy." I said quickly trying to grab everything before he could realize I'd made a complete fool of myself.
He didn't say anything and when I looked up at him I realized it was because he was trying to contain his laughter.
I gathered all my stuff and stood up. It was fairly obvious that Colton had just got out of the shower. His hair was still wet and clung to his skin and he smelled really good.
"What are you doing up so early? Usually I'm the only one up…" He looked me up and down obviously examining my distressed state.
I let out a breath looking down at his shoes. "Just couldn't sleep."
"Ahh…"
I brushed past him to get to the showers. I just needed to get this day over with.
"Hey, wait." Colton grabbed my shoulder. I halted turning around.
"Are you busy later this evening?" He asked.
"No…" I replied slowly. I didn't really know where he was going with this.
"Would you want to go to a wedding with me later tonight?" He raised an eyebrow. "If you're feeling up to it."
I just nodded. Words were too hard.
"Cool, I'll come get you later tonight. Be ready by five o'clock." He flashed me a charming smile.
I made my way into the showers throwing my clothes off and wrapping a towel around my body. I walked over to one of the stalls and slid the glass door behind me.
I threw my towel on a hanger and turned the water on as hot as it could go. I stood there in the water as long as possible letting it burn all the thoughts out of my head.
That night I fixed my hair in the mirror and applied make-up trying to cover up the bags under my eyes. It was hopeless. I looked down and wondered if what I was wearing would be fine. I was wearing a semi-fitted navy dress with a scoop neck. Pretty plain and simple. My hair was up in a messy bun and I had on some silver heels.
Miranda gave me a thumbs up before going and opening the door. Colton was there in a tux.
"You look beautiful." He said kissing my cheek.
"Thanks." I smiled as he walked my past the cabins and towards his car. He had a brand new shiny SUV.
Stupid rich boy.
He opened the door for me and I got in the passenger seat. I took a deep breath and tried to relax as I settled in, I could already tell it was going to be a long night.
I blinked looking at the people in front of me. I hadn't been paying attention to a word they were saying. Everyone talking was just background noise.
I heard someone laugh in the distance. It sounded like Travis. I shook my head trying to clear my thoughts.
"Sorry Katie, can you excuse me for a moment?" Colton asked me looking apologetic.
"Sure, no problem." I smiled at him. Truth be told, I was a bit bored trying to keep up with the conversation anyway.
He walked over with the guy to continue their conversation about stocks. I sighed playing with some of the leftover food on my plate.
I heard that laugh again and shook my head. What was wrong with me? Did I really like Travis? If I'm imagining hearing his laugh while I'm with Colton that's probably not a good sign.
I looked up scanning the room. It looked like there were a lot of people in their 20's or 30's.
There was even a guy that looked like Travis. Upon further examination I saw that it was indeed. The living, breathing, one and only Travis Stoll. He was talking to an extremely hot brunette. And if my eyes weren't deceiving me it looked to me like he was nursing an alcoholic drink.
I may or may not have been staring at him… When he looked over and spotted me. He turned to the brunette and said something before he made a bee-line towards me.
"Shit…" I let out an even bigger sigh. But part of me was a bit excited… Not that I would ever admit it but it was impossible to be bored with him.
He took Colton's empty seat and looked at me for a few seconds without saying anything.
"Yes Travis?" I asked him looking up at him.
"So it's really you? I'm not just imagining you." He looked relived. "I mean I know I'm still hung up over you but…" He laughed.
"You didn't look hung up when you were talking to that brunette." I said a bit bitterly finishing off the last of my water.
Travis nodded almost thoughtfully. "I mean she was pretty hot but she's no you." He finished off his drink as well.
"Are you drunk?" I asked bluntly.
He looked at his glass. "Well this is my first drink so I'm going to have say no." He smirked his crooked smirk.
"Why are you even here?" I asked him.
He raised an eyebrow. "We're long time family friends with Ann." I vaguely remembered that was the bride. "I'm guessing Colton brought you as his date."
I looked down at the table. "Yeah…"
"So where is he?"
I pointed in Colton's general direction. Unfortunately even more middle-aged men had gathered around him. Great.
"Well being the asshole I am, I'm going to use this opportunity to steal his date." He smirked grabbing my hand.
"Wait… Travis…" I frowned. This really didn't sound like a good idea. In the first place how was Travis even talking to me? Any normal boy wouldn't be able to push down the pride or embarrassment.
"Colton won't even know where I went." I pointed out.
Travis pointed to my handbag. "Do you have a pen in there?"
I nodded pulling out my pen reluctantly.
He took a spare napkin and wrote…
Borrowing your date.
-Your fav bro
PS. It's Travis.
"Leave your shoes here." He instructed and I did as I was told.
He took my hand and pulled me onto the dance floor. The DJ was playing some cookie cutter pop song and everyone was grinding around us.
"Travis…" I frowned. If he thought I was going to dance sexually with him he had another thing coming.
Travis took off his jacket and tossed it towards his table. He unbuttoned his shirt a bit and rolled up his sleeves. He looked much more casual and much more… Travis.
He pulled me onto the middle of the dance floor and looked down grinning at me. "Do you know how to dance?"
I shook my head back and forth indicating a no.
"Well you're about to learn how to waltz." Travis smirked putting one hand on my waist and clasping the other in his hand.
"What?!" My eyes widened.
"Calm down." Travis rolled his eyes. "Just put your feet on mine and I'll lead you."
"This isn't even the right music, or place, or time…" I trailed off but placed my feet on his. We were really close together; my chest was almost touching his. I stood there trying to focus on my breathing. I held his hand with one hand and placed my other hand on his shoulder.
"Katie… You can't just stand on my feet." Travis laughed. "Shift your weight from foot to foot."
I shifted my weight to my right foot and Travis picked up his other foot and took a step forward. I moved with him. I guess we were… dancing.
And it turns out Travis was pretty good at it. We were gliding around on the dance floor, weaving between other couples and around large groups.
"You're actually good at this." I frowned looking up at him.
He snorted. "Always the tone of surprise." He looked down at me and then spun me around. I momentarily stepped off his feet before stepping on them again.
"Where'd you learn to dance like this?" I asked.
"Dancing like this…" Travis laughed pulling her along faster. "Is called the Waltz and I'm not going to tell you where I learned it because I like to maintain an air of mystery."
I snorted at that last part.
He looked me up and down and smirked.
I raised an eyebrow, "What?"
"Geez, you really went all out." He grinned. "It even looks like you've shaved within the past month."
I hit him hard.
"Just kidding." His laughed with his crooked grin.
It occurred to me that if Travis was here then Connor was sure to be here… And who knows who else from camp was attending such an ordinary mortal wedding.
"Is Connor here?" I asked.
"Yup, him and his girlfriend are around here somewhere." Travis replied.
"Girlfriend?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, she's a mortal. But she's cool and she can see through the mist." He explained.
"That's really cool, I've never really met anyone who could-"
"Could I have my date back bro?" Colton appeared seemly out of nowhere.
I blinked looking at him. A wave of guilt crashed over me, I had completely forgotten about him.
Travis' face fell a bit. But he smiled anyway and said, "Well I suppose I could bear to part with her." He looked down at me. "Um… Guess I'll see you around. Thanks for the dance."
I nodded not meeting his eyes.
I heard his footsteps as he walked away and once I was sure he was gone, I looked up at Colton.
He was studying me carefully.
"Let's dance." I said quickly giving him a small smile.
"I'm afraid I'm not much of a dancer." He shrugged apologetically. "But I would like to show off my lovely date." He grinned. "I promise we can leave soon, I just have to talk to a few more people in my step-fathers company."
"I guess that sounds alright." I nodded and followed him off the dance floor.
An hour and a half later I must have shaken hands with a dozen or so VIP's and I was bored out of my mind.
"Well gentlemen I'm afraid the restroom is calling my name, I'll be back momentarily." Colton leaned down kissing my cheek before walking off towards the exit.
I bit the inside of my cheek looking at all the strangers he had left me with.
While I felt uncomfortable when Colton left the other men almost seemed to relax.
"The nerve of that kid…" One muttered.
"Just because his step-father's the CEO…" The tallest one said.
"He's practically a child and to think… he's going to inherit. He's not even related to him by blood. I mean his wife wasn't even married at the time he was born." The chubby one added.
"Out of wedlock?"
The other man nodded and I could feel my anger growing.
"If you ask me his wife is lucky she got such a wealthy man such as himself when she's obviously a loose cannon particularly when it come to-"
My anger flared and I couldn't hold my tongue any longer.
"You act as if you know everything. How dare you judge someone you know so little about? If you even knew who Colton's real father was-"
Colton had arrived back from the bathroom. "Katie…" He grasped my hand pulling me a couple steps back. "Well gentlemen I think it's best we be going." He nodded to each of them.
"Ah yes, we'll it was nice seeing you."
"Do tell your step-father hello."
Colton waved goodbye before pulling me back outside into the lounge area of the Country Club. He looked irritated with me. Which was absolutely ridiculous. I defended him!
I crossed my arms over my chest. "You're mad at me?" I asked trying to stay calm.
"Well, yeah." Colton said in a 'duh' voice.
"But I defended you. They were talking shit about you and your mom." I frowned confused.
"Well it's only natural… They're jealous of my position… That was handed to me, while they had to work for theirs." Other people were starting to stare.
"So what!" I snapped. "You never asked it to be handed to you and you work hard too."
"Katie, calm down." Colton grabbed my hand and pulled me down a secluded hallway.
"I want them to respect me for me, not because of who my step-father is…" He trailed off taking a step closer, the hallway was quite tiny. And I had my back against the wall.
"It just really made me mad that they were saying such obvious lies about you and-" Colton leaned down and kissed me hard.
I kissed him back, significantly less mad at him now. My arms slinked up around his neck of their own accord.
Colton pulled himself even closer and moved a hand up to tuck a lock of stray hair behind my ear.
I heard a ringtone and Colton's body tensed as he pulled his phone out of his pocket.
I sighed as he took a step back, untangling himself from me.
I vaguely heard the voice through the line speaking and Colton nodded a lot replying every once and a while. The longer the conversation went on the more unhappy he looked.
It dawned on me that if you nodded the other person on the other end of the line couldn't see that. I wondered if it had occurred to Colton.
I spaced out for a while until Colton hung up. I grabbed his hand pulling him back towards me. "Can we finish what we started?" I asked looking up at him.
He looked incredibly irritated.
"What?" I frowned looking up at him.
"Change of plans. Something went really wrong at my Step-father's business meeting and he wants me there to help him do some clean-up." He let out a breath he'd been holding for a while.
"Alright well I guess we can just end the night early…" I trailed off a bit disappointed.
Colton bit his lip. "Camp is an hour and a half east. My step-father's work is an hour and a half west. If I drop you off I'll end up driving for four and half hours." He shook his head. "That's too long."
For a moment I panicked. "So you're just going to leave me here?!"
"Well… would you be entirely opposed to Travis taking you home?" He suggested quietly.
I swallowed looking down at the ground. "I guess not." I responded after a while.
He grabbed my hand and let me back to the reception room. He searched the crowd for a while before he located the Stoll brothers. He pulled me towards them.
I looked up just in time to see Travis' reaction. A brief look of hurt passed over him before the usual crooked smile came.
"Hey bro. What's up?" He asked Colton.
"Can I talk to you for a second?" Colton asked Travis.
"Uhh… sure." Travis looked confused but followed Colton into a quieter corner.
I sat down at the table next to Connor and what I assumed was his girlfriend.
"Hey Katie." Connor waved at me.
"Connor." I nodded back.
"I'm Amelia." The girl next to him slurred.
I raised an eyebrow, drunken girlfriend. That's good.
I waited patiently, like I had done most of the night until they came back.
Colton came back with Travis and I stood up. Colton came over to me and said "Travis agreed to take you home. Is that alright?"
I nodded not looking at him.
"This isn't really how I wanted the night to end either." He pointed out.
"I know." I sighed staring at a far wall.
He leaned down and kissed me hard and I was taken by surprise. His lips were pressing against mine but my own lips didn't move.
He pulled back after a while and smiled at me. "Decided to take my goodnight kiss earlier."
No matter which way I looked at it, Colton was basically claiming his property.
I rolled my eyes.
"Well," he looked at his watch. "I really do have to go."
"Have fun." I told him.
"Yeah right." He rolled his eyes already walking away. I watched him until he disappeared in the crowd.
Travis walked over and stood next to me.
"Um… Sorry that your date has to leave." He told me.
"It's not your fault." I shrugged not looking at him.
"Well I'd be lying if I said I was sad." He laughed turning around and sitting in his chair next to Connor. "You can sulk in the corner or you can come and chill with us."
I sighed as I sat down next to Travis. "Do you know what time we're going back to camp?"
He thought for a minute. "Umm, probably in an hour or so."
I leaned my elbow against the table and stared off at a wall.
"Let's dance." Amelia slurred. Connor rolled his eyes but obliged.
The brunette Travis was talking to earlier made a reappearance. She also seemed slightly tipsy as she pulled Travis out to the dance floor.
Damn open bars. I mean, had any one ever heard of self-control?
I watched them all have fun and sighed. Why had things turned out this way? It wasn't fair. I frowned and stood up. I needed to keep myself occupied.
I left and went to where I remembered most of the food was. I weaved through the crowds. I grabbed a cup and got some punch. Food is always the perfect distraction.
I turned around and was about to head back over to the table when I froze.
Where was Travis' table?
I wasn't paying attention; Colton had lead me over there.
"Just great." I muttered. "Just fucking great." I sipped my punch heading back towards where I thought they were. I didn't see them at all. I was surrounded by strangers. Tears welled in my eyes and I had to force myself to relax. Don't get worked up. Don't get worked up. I told myself. As long as I go to the lobby they'll find me eventually. Even if it's only right before they leave.
I sighed making my way to where the doors were.
I sat down in a sofa near the doors and waited for the Stolls to either find me or decide to leave.
It must've been over half an hour I sat there and watched people enter and leave. "Why the hell has no one come looking for me?" I grumbled to myself. "This is fucking ridiculous I shouldn't even be here." My rage fueled me as I stormed off back into the room in search of the Stolls.
I had only just started my search when he appeared. He was middle aged complete with a receding hair-line.
"Jessica." He grabbed my wrist yanking me back. I could smell the alcohol on his breath.
"No…" I said slowly trying to remain calm. "I think you have me confused with someone else. Now if you'll excuse me."
"Jessica." He hissed pulling me closer.
My eyes widened in fear, he was still a great deal stronger than me and I couldn't break his grip.
Travis appeared out of nowhere and grabbed the man's wrist. "I'm going to have to ask you to stop harassing my girlfriend."
"No, Jessica needs to come with me she ne-" Travis let go of his wrist and intertwined his fingers with mine pulling me away quickly into the crowd.
I squeezed Travis' hand, like I'd fade away if I dare to let go.
He pulled me by a wall and examined me. I was on the verge of tears. I'm sure my face must've been blotchy and I was sweaty from the crowd. I was running on no sleep and everyone and everything seemed to be getting in my way. I took deep breaths trying to calm myself down. I didn't want to let Travis see me cry.
Travis must've noticed that I was on the verge of tears. He leaned over and untied a balloon from nearby. He walked back to me and tied it to my dress strap. The balloon floated a few feet above my head.
I looked up at him and raised an eyebrow. "What the hell are you doing?"
"It's too hard to find you in this crowd." Travis explained with a crooked grin. "I mean really, what am I suppose to do with you?"
I started laughing hysterically. I couldn't help it. I was too tired. After I had composed myself Travis untied the balloon and took my hand again. "We're going home." He told me and I smiled back. "It's about time."
He gathered Connor, Amelia and his mom and the next half an hour was a blur. Before I knew it Connor was driving, their mom had shotgun, I sat in the middle in the back, Travis was on my right and Amelia was on my left.
"You know what this reminds me of?" Amelia hiccupped.
"No, what does it remind you of?" Connor humored his girlfriend.
"This is almost like that one time we were getting it on and that Chimera came crashing through the window right when I was-"
The car swerved as Connor tried to shut up his girlfriend. "No, Amelia. This is nothing like that time."
At any other time this probably would have been highly amusing and extremely good blackmail but I was much too tired to care.
I leaned my head back against the seat and fell asleep.
When I awoke somehow my head had leaned over to rest on Travis' shoulder. I resisted the urge to move and pretended to sleep. I heard voices.
It appeared everyone was asleep but Connor and Travis. The car had slowed down considerably; we must be approaching the Stoll's house.
"You're just going to get yourself hurt." Connor said quietly.
Travis took a deep breath in but declined to respond.
"I know you love her, but she's not going to choose you over Colton. So, I think it'd be best if you just-"
"I know!" Travis hissed. "I know, Connor. But what else can I do?" His voice cracked a bit.
I swallowed trying to block out my conscience as we pulled into a driveway. Connor got out, woke up his mom, and carried his girlfriend back to the house.
Travis shook my shoulder lightly waking me up. I pretended to wake up.
"Hey, we're only ten minutes away from camp." He told me. "I have to drive. Do you wanna sit in the front?" I nodded slowly changing seats and we were soon on our way.
We were silent the whole way. The radio was turned onto a soft rock station and a John Mayer song was playing. I leaned my head against the window.
We were pulling into camp when Travis finally spoke. "Do you still want Colton over me?" He asked me.
"Yes." I replied simply reaching my hand over to the door and trying to open it.
Travis locked it with a sigh.
"Are you even joking right now?" He asked in an irritated manner.
"Let me out." I told him exhausted.
"I'm not trying to say anything bad about my brother, Katie. But he doesn't love you like I do. He's never going to put you first. I think tonight demonstrated that pretty well."
"Shut up." I snapped, quickly locating the unlock button on my side and letting myself out. I escaped from John Mayer singing about heartbreak, and the boy who's heart I was breaking.
I ran back to my cabin.
I heard Travis in the distance yell, "Is the asshole really that great?!"
I didn't respond.
I had no answer.
