There was an enormous satellite nearby the Earth. It had bright yellow lights revolving around the top of the tower which jutted out from the rest of the satellite. Outside the satellite was the calmness of space. However, there was always a bustling of activity inside the satellite because some of the world's strongest superheroes lived on it. Today was no exception because there was a birthday party in the grand dining room.
In the dining room which was decorated with several colorful balloons and streamers, seated at the head of the table was Zatanna the mistress of magic who was wearing a party hat instead of her normal magic hat. In front of her was an issue of The Daily Prophet. All of her friends except for the Martian were seated around the table waiting for her to blow out the candles on her birthday cake. They all clapped and cheered when she was successful and then they all drank a toast to their friend.
"So, this is your fourtieth, isn't it?" Flash asked.
"You know a woman never reveals her age," Zatanna chided.
"There's one thing that bothers me," Flash stated.
"What's that?" Zatanna answered.
"How could a teenager defeat four members of the Legion Of Doom and a Death Eater all by himself?" Flash wondered.
"Why are you so surprised?" Zatanna replied with a smirk as she took a sip of her orange juice.
"You better watch what you say, Flash," Wonder Woman warned. "Zatanna might turn you into a toad.
"Wouldn't put it past her," Batman added as he remembered yesterday's threat.
"Harry will make a fine Auror someday if he doesn't decide to join us," Zatanna proclaimed proudly.
"Aren't you a little biased?" Flash questioned.
"What did you expect?" Zatanna shot back. "He's my godson."
"You're proud of him, aren't you?" Wonder Woman asked needlessly.
"Of course," Zatanna replied with a wide grin as she cut herself a piece of chocolate cake.
Zatanna basked in the glow of her party and the attention of her friends. However, she couldn't help but remember that not all of her birthdays were happy. There was one birthday that she would always remember as the most unhappy day of her life. It was the day her best friend Lily Evans Potter had died.
Many years ago, there was a house of modest origin in Godric's Hollow. It was a cottage where no one would suspect a hero living there. That was before Lord Voldemort had come to kill Harry Potter when he was only one year old. James Potter fought bravely so his wife could escape with his son but he couldn't quite hold him off long enough. After he finished off James, Voldemort went up to deal with the young baby. Lily refused to get out of Voldemort's way so the dark lord killed her for her trouble. When Voldemort tried to perform the task that he came for, the spell rebounded and not only severely weakened the dark wizard but blew off a large section of the roof.
Soon after, a man with straggly black hair came to meet a very large man to survey the damage. Hagrid took great pains to comfort young Sirius. Unbeknownst to the two wizards, there was a stranger watching the morbid scene from behind a tree. It was a woman wearing a star spangled uniform and magic bracelets, Wonder Woman. When she had watched enough to learn what had happened, she sighed and picked up her communicator to relay the horrid news to the tower knowing that a birthday party was about to come to a crashing halt.
Back on the tower, Zatanna sat in the grand dining room celebrating her birthday. There were different colors of streamers and balloons hanging from the ceiling. Behind Zatanna, there was a banner proclaiming her birthday in bright red letters. Black Canary was playing a violin solo in honor of the birthday girl. Zatanna was busy showing off her picture of her one year old godson Harry to anyone who would listen.
"Um, Zatanna," Flash spoke awkwardly. "I think that's the one hundredth time that you have shown me that picture.""Leave her alone," Green Arrow protested. "She's obviously proud of him. If I didn't know any better. I'd say that was a picture of her own child."
"Does it show that much?" Zatanna gushed with a red face.
"I'd say so," Green Arrow agreed.
"Maybe I'll go pay Lily and James a visit later," Zatanna mused.
Superman entered the room with a very somber face. He approached the mistress of magic as if the weight of the world was on his shoulders.
"Superman, join the party," Zatanna ordered happily.
"I'm afraid that I don't feel much like partying," Superman replied.
"What's wrong?" Zatanna asked with a eyebrow raised.
"I think we should talk privately," Superman suggested as he motioned to the door of the grand dining room.
Black Canary continued to happily play her violin as Superman escorted Zatanna into the hallway. Black Canary dropped her violin and a deathly silence came over the room when Zatanna screamed. Outside the room, Zatanna sobbed on Superman's shoulder. She had just found out that Lord Voldemort had killed her best friend Lily and her husband James.
"Wh-What about Harry?" Zatanna sobbed.
"He's going to live with his aunt and uncle," Superman replied as he patted Zatanna's baxk.
"I've got to go down and see if I can do anything for Harry," Zatanna replied.
"Of course," Superman agreed.
A man wearing regal purple robes and half-spectacles arrived at a quiet neighborhood in Little Whinging. This particular neighborhood seemed to be the place where nothing odd ever happened. Each house was designed to blend in with the one next to it and each fence had a manicured lawn. However, Albus Dumbledore knew that something very odd was about to happen.
The tall wizard took a lighter out of his pocket. A normal person would have used it to light a pipe. Since this person was not normal, he pointed the lighter at one of the many street lights on Privet Drive and clicked a button. The light in the street light was magically transported into the lighter. Dumbledore pointed the lighter at each lamp in turn and made the street pitch black so that no Muggles would see the night's events. When Dumbledore finished his task, he noticed a tabby cat with strange markings around its eyes sitting on a wall. The powerful wizard sat on the wall next to the cat and addressed it.
"Fancy meeting you here, Professor McGonagall," Dumbledore greeted.
"How did you know it was me?" McGonagall replied after she returned to her normal form.
"My dear professor, I have never seen a cat sit so stiffly before," Dumbledore explained.
"Is it true that…" McGonagall spoke.
"We are being watched," Dumbledore interrupted when he saw a pair of bright blue eyes watching from an alley.
"Where?" McGonagall coughed as she tried to find the eavesdropper.
"You might as well come out from there, Katie," Dumbledore ordered as he got up from the wall.
A woman wearing a flowing orange robe with long black hair approached Dumbledore. Her eyes were completely bloodshot due to the fact that she had been crying for a while. She was also carrying a handkerchief in her right hand to catch any stray tears that happened to fall.
"I thought that you would be here," Dumbledore declared as he greeted the newcomer with a warm smile.
"Voldemort killed James and Lily?" Zatanna whined as she noticed that McGonagall cringed at the name of the dark wizard.
"I'm afraid so," Dumbledore answered.
"You don't like it when I say his name, do you?" Zatanna protested as she rounded on McGonagall.
"Quite frankly, I don't," McGonagall snorted.
"If you would have seen half of the things that I have seen, you wouldn't have any trouble saying Voldemort's name," Zatanna pointed out.
"Really?" McGonagall replied.
"Do you see those stars?" Zatanna argued as she pointed at the sky. "There a few monsters up there who would consider Voldemort to be nothing more than an ant to be trampled on."
"Unless I am very much mistaken, today is your birthday Katie," Dumbledore spoke to silence the argument.
"Somehow, I don't feel much like celebrating right now," Zatanna answered as she blew her nose with her handkerchief.
"I am sure that you will in time," Dumbledore consoled.
"Are you really going to leave Harry with these people?" Zatanna complained.
"It is the best thing for him," Dumbledore declared. "He will be protected from Voldemort in this house."
"He might be protected, but he won't be loved," Zatanna debated. "I've been watching these people. They can't stand anything different."
"Sometimes these things can't be helped," Dumbledore stated.
"Why can't I take care of Harry?" Zatanna asked.
"I was wondering when you would make that argument," Dumbledore answered as he dug a Muggle newspaper from his robe that had a picture of Zatanna shaking hands with Superman.
"You know about that?" Zatanna gasped as a motorcycle carrying an enormous man came in from the sky.
"I do not think that it would be wise to subject Harry to that kind of a life," Dumbledore refused as Hagrid picked up Harry.
"Can I say goodbye to him?" Zatanna pleaded.
Zatanna took Harry from Hagrid and cradled her best friend's son in her arms. She sadly kissed him as she approached the Dursley's doorstep.
"Harry, I know that it won't be easy living with these people, but try to be happy," Zatanna said as she laid the baby on the doorstep and rang the doorbell.
"Now it is time to visit some of the many parties that are taking place around us," Dumbledore ordered.
"I'll come, but I don't think that I will have any fun," Zatanna protested as a final tear fell from her eyes.
"Zatanna, are you okay?" Wonder Woman asked.
"I was just thinking," Zatanna sighed.
"About that day?" Wonder Woman answered.
"What else?" Zatanna concurred as she picked up her newspaper.
Zatanna began to read The Daily Prophet to see if anything interesting had happened in the magical community. She no sooner had seen the headline when smoke started coming out of her ears.
"What's wrong?" Wonder Woman inquired with a worried look.
"Harry's been brought up on charges!" Zatanna cried out,
