The Toy

Chapter One

Galvan Patrol Ship Rijarl, Captain Xenol's Log:

We have abandoned ship due to an series of technological glitches which have knocked out life support as well as control of the engines. All attempts to correct the glitches have fail before deadline for safe evac. We shut down the computer and activated the self-destruct before getting to the life pods. Given the glitches, the destruction of the ship to protect the secrets of Galvan technology might not function as desire. So back up tracking systems as well as continuing what computer repairs the automatic maintance systems can perform. We are not sure where the ship could end up if something like the hyperdrive is activated for as to allow for massive spacial travel.

Let us hope if the technology survives, it is not discovered by a primative or agressive species.

Unnamed Planet, Unexplored System 25-B

The Planet had been catalogue but had not been explored before now due to conflicting goals of the Citadel races. Even if it had been protected till now, when they could do a complete planetary exploration. The planet had a minor atmosphere and mineral deposits which could be of use to industry. Nothing out of the usual... until they discovered it.

"Why would anyone leave a toy spaceship on a lifeless planet?" the common refrain from the investigating team. It was a small ship, which looked like it was made for life only a dozen or so centimetres tall. Which is why everyone believed it was a toy. Yet an undiscovered toy still might be of interest, especially on an unknown planet, which was why the Salarian Scientist Hirt Sculleon was examining it.

Hirt had expected the toy to have a few simple mechnical and/or electronic parts. When the scans were finished... The world changed. Or it would once Hirt had scanned the device over and over again to make sure his readings were right. Once he had proof which would make any skeptic a believe, he called the commander for the mission. Commander Isia entered soon after with a collection of Asari Commandos, not surprising given who was financing the mission.

"Hirt, is this about the toy? I know it's an unusual find but..." started the commander, before being interupted by the scientists.

"Not unusual, not toy. Revolutionary unknown alien craft." answered the scientist as he brough up the scans and the information they held. As he turned to watch her surprised face, and those of her soldiers, he continued.

"Unknown spaceship, contains unknown faster then light drive... which does not use element zero. Further scans with more specialize equipment is needed to see if superior to Mass Relay FTL drives. Ship contains energy weaponry, energy shields to counter both energy and projectile weaponry, and a vast computer core for size. Those just from simple scans and extrapulations. You know what it means."

They all did was this ship use technology which contained technology which would put most of the Citadel to shame. Yet it brought up a good question, which was asked by Isia, "Why was such a powerful ship abandoned?"

"Computer glitches, my best guess, could not fix problem before Life Support failed. Not sure what else it could be. Best recommend cracking computer. May contain database which contains valuable information like technology specs and biology of builders of ship. However, computer seems to be extemely complex. Would need best of best to crack it. No matter who they are."

Months later in the Citadel Council chambers...

The three councilor's looked at the collection of data on the "Toy" ship. It had been transfered to the Citadel science teams for study and reverse engineering. After a quick study of the ship, it was disected in the best way they could so they could independently study the different systems. The most interesting being the total lack of element zero for anything. Once section was studying the engine systems, another was looking at the offensive and defensive technology, and another was trying to crack the computer core. Progress was slow, but moving forward.

Which was what the three major races in their section of space were discussing. The most important was what they were going to do with their discoveries. And who they were getting these discoveries from.

"On the one hand, the species seems to have advance weaponry which would make them a threat. If they were not so small. How dangerous is a creature no bigger then a hand?" asked the turian councilor Sparatus. Not surprising as his species were the military and peacekeepers of the triad which ran Citadel Space.

"A virus is dangerous and even smaller then the unknown life forms. Until we know what they are capable of, one must entertain the idea of race being a threat. Especially with the technology discovered from the ship. I would hate to admit it, but there is the potential the race maybe more advance then Protheans." continued Councilor Valern of the Salarian, who species brought technological expertise and skills in the art of state intelligence.

The last line brought silence as all technology, including the Mass Relays left over and used for all major long distance space travel, were build or based by the Protheans who came before them. The idea of someone with more power or advance science then those who were the backbone of their society was frightening. Then again the idea of reverse engineering the "Toy" would change everything.

Councilor Tevos, the Asari representive, was used as the diplomatic and mediators for the triad. Which was what the situation needed, and yet she was not quite sure which actions to take at the moment. They need more information. An alert on more information made her feel like she had just ran into a lucky streak.

"News from the drive project and the core project. The former has finally worked out much of the physics of the drive as well as the mechanical parts. They are now trying to see if they can scale up the engine for use by one of our ships. Designs for experimental probes are being developed.

From the computer core project, we have been able to access some of the computer core. The ship's computer seemed to come with an Universal Transator, which has allowed use access. The computer glitches have made accessing some of the core problematic, we have some news." said Tevos, as the screen brought up the information.

"The species is called the Galvan from Galvan Prime in the Galvan system." The Asari tried to inform before being interupted by her turian counterpart.

"Okay, they may be tech geniuses but they are not inventive or innovative in naming."

The dirty looks he had been given by the other two councilors made their displeasure at his joke known. Tevos continued as an image of the species continued, "They are a small race of bipedal amphibians. Averaging about twelve centimetres tall. Soft, flexible skeleton structure, allowing the ability to squeeze in tight spaces or make quick escapes from danger.

Large bubous green eyes with thin line pupils and horizonta eyelids which close from the sides of their eyes. They have a metamorphosis from egg to a tadpole to an adult state. Tadpoles have tails and lack legs, gaining... wisdom legs when becoming adults as well as loosing their tails. Females have thin tendrills on head early on, males develop them later.

They have an advance intellect, innate skill in understanding machines to the point of fixing them on the inside, sticky pads, long tongues which can seem prehensile, slime to make them hard to grasp, long life spands, sharp teeth, have gills and lungs which make them amphibious. They also contain a... pre-brain. A secondary brain which hands basic body functions, with the intellect of most other species' very young or dim children."

"They have a second brain for basic functions. In other words they have an entire brain set up for..." said Sparatus, before Valern interupted the line of thought.

"Idea of biology having secondary neuro-command centre has many benefits. My people would live the idea of one brain taking care of basic needs while second larger brain focuses on more important intellectual matters. More efficient for problem solving. Much like Citadel divides work among species." continued the salarian as he pointed out the benefits and not the crude humour his turian counterpart was thinking.
