Mind Reader (Dustin Lynch)
"What do you mean you have to go to Miami for a week? I thought you were working from home?" The frown swept over Brittany's usually cheery features and for some reason it made Santana smile to see her pout.
They were on their way to some secret date night that Brittany wouldn't tell her about when Santana decided to spring the news on her about having business back in Miami. "It's only a week. Plus you have that volleyball championship and the singing content at the bar. You'll be more than busy here to keep you occupied."
"But what if I go back to my old playa playa ways?"
At the mere sound of Brittany saying playa Santana burst out into a fit of laughter as she held on to Brittany's arm and rest her head on the blonde woman's shoulder. "Please never say that again and if you do then there will be no more lady kisses for you. Of any variety and honey I am damn sure that aint nobody in this town give you better lady kisses than me."
"So confident."
Without looking Brittany could feel the smirk radiate off her girlfriend. It made her laugh and kiss the top of the woman's head. She was right though, she gave some pretty damn good lady kisses that Brittany hoped would not end anytime soon. "You might be a playa but honey I invented the game."
"And that's why I," Brittany caught herself before the words slipped out. She wasn't even sure why they almost had, did she really love Santana. "That's why it worries me that you're going off to Miami with all the sexy Latinas and salsa music."
Santana didn't seem to catch on to what she had almost said and if she had she hid the fact really well. "Please Miami isn't my type. It was fun while it lasted but it wasn't my scene. I will forever have an on going love affair with New York City. Plus that's where all my actual friends are. Yes I actually have those, sort of. I'm busy don't judge."
"No judging on my end."
"Are we there yet? Where are we even going? We could have had a picnic much closer to home."
Brittany laughed as she shook her head. "No picnic, it's almost 9 o'clock at night and yes we are almost there."
Santana let out a soft chuckle. "Please, you could have had some romantic midnight picnic set up in some park."
"This is true but sorry to disappoint."
Ten minutes later Brittany pulled up to a small booth that looked like it was in the middle of no where. She rolled down the window and smiled at the older gentleman that was attending the booth. "For two please, number three." The old man nodded as Brittany passed him some money, Santana couldn't tell how much because she was too busy trying to figure out exactly where she was. But it was so dark she couldn't figure it out.
Brittany let out a big laugh as she watched Santana try her hardest to decipher where they were. "It's not funny that you won't tell me where we are." Santana watched Brittany's smirk grow.
"I thought it was obvious." Santana followed Brittany's line of vision. In front of them was a large screen and a field filled with parked cars.
"The drive-in?" Santana smiled from ear to ear. "I have never been to the drive-in."
"So you said." Before Brittany could speak again she felt Santana's arms wraped around her neck.
"Finally you two are here. Smile!" Mercedes snapped the picture as she threw the door to Brittany's truck open. "Ya'll are two dang cute," she said as the polaroid printed out of her camera. Shaking it she handed it to Brittany who set it on the dashboard of her truck. As the image started to appear Santana kissed the blonde's cheek.
"Damn we are pretty adorable. Now go get me some popcorn and why are we parked backwards?"
Brittany held up a finger and pulled Santana out of the truck with her. She dropped her tailgate and rolled back the soft cover revealing the air mattress, pillow covered back of her truck. "Blankets, pillows, an air mattress and all your favourite candy but I'll be back with the popcorn. Mercedes don't even think for a second that you are getting on there with her."
"Don't worry you're pretty little head about it. I have a date, I was just saying hey."
Two and a half hours and a full movie later Santana was curled into Brittany's side as the second movie started to play. "Is it just me or did the temperature really drop?" Santana questioned as she pulled the blanket up.
"No it did get cold, it feels like it's going to rain but the weather didn't call for rain tonight." Before she could start rambling she was silenced but a kiss. A really soft peck that made her never want to leave the bed of her truck. It probably would have been a lot longer of a kiss had the raindrops not started to fall on their heads.
"Hasn't anyone ever told you the weather network is always wrong?" Santana laughed.
"The rain is not going to ruin our night damnit! How about I pull the soft top over us?"
Santana smiled with a laugh. "Why not."
They tried to continue watching the movie as they laid awkwardly in the back of Brittany's truck but as the rain started to come down harder, more and more people kept leaving. At some point the rain turned into hail and it was then that Brittany and Santana decided to give up on the movie, especially since the screens had been turned off. They made a run for the inside of the truck but it didn'tmatter, they were soaked from head to toe.
"I feel like my insides are soaked! How can my insides be soaked!" Santana let out as she peeled her sweater off. Brittany couldn't help but take in how beautiful her girlfriend looked even soaking wet.
"Lets get you home and changed, can't have you getting sick for your trip." Brittany grinned as she started the truck.
"Or maybe that's your plan. Maybe you want me to get sick so I can't go on my trip."
Santana watched Brittany throw her head back and laugh. "If I know you at all I know that being sick wouldn't stop you from going. You are far too stubborn for that."
"Perceptive aren't you."
The blonde shook her head. "You're the mind reader, not me."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Santana smiled as she took a hold of Brittany's hand.
"You're a little mind reader, you know exactly what those jeans do to me, you know when you smile at me it makes me weak in the knees. I don't know how you know but you do. You know me so well and yet I have to remind myself that we barely know each other at all."
"What can I say I'm good at reading people."
"Slide your pretty self on over here then." Rolling her eyes Santana slid over in the seat and rested her head on Brittany's shoulder.
A half hour later Brittany parked her truck in front of Santana's house. "Come in and change? We've been in these wet clothes for long enough and no I'm not asking."
Brittany nodded as she turned off the engine and followed Santana inside. They quitely made their way up to Santana's bedroom. Once the door was closed behind Brittany Santana started to peel the wet clothes from her body causing Brittany to do nothing more than stop and stare. She was positive she'd never get over Santana's beauty.
"Stop staring and change, pick what ever you want from the closet, there's not a whole lot in there I know but I'm sure you can find something to do make do."
As Brittany finished changing Santana made her way downstairs to make them some tea. When she came back upstairs she found Brittany sitting on her bed looking at an old picture. "Is this you and Quinn?" Santana nodded as she handed Brittany her mug.
"It is, we thought we were so tough." They both laughed as they got comfortable. "Stay the night?"
Brittany only nodded as she set her mug down on the bedside table so her arms were free to wrap around Santana. "I'm going to miss you, have I mentioned that?"
"Once or twice but it's not that long and I already promised not to suddenly fall for any sexy salsa dancing latina's. I'll be back before you know it."
"Patty?" The woman in the wheelchair turned her head around and smiled up at the woman coming close to her.
"Katherine, how are you darling?" The elder Lopez continued to smile as she took the woman's hand in hers.
"I'm very well and how have you been doing? They're treating you exceptionally around here I hope."
Santana's grandmother nodded. "They've been very kind, they're telling me they think the cancer is gone. I just finished my last round of chemo."
Without hesitation Katherine Pierce leaned over and hugged Patty gently. "That is the best news I have heard in a very long time. The counsel can't wait to have you back at our meetings, they aren't the same without you. I still wish you would have let us help cover the expenses."
"As I said before that is very kind of you all but my family is very supportive. Actually my granddaughter paid for everything, she came home to help out around the house as well. She's a big city business woman."
"I remember you telling me about her, you'll have to bring her by the house when you're feeling up to it."
Patty smiled and looked around. "There she is. Katherine this is my beautiful granddaughter Santana."
Katherine's eyes got wide as she looked up at Santana who stared blankly, not sure how to feel that her grandmother was so friendly with her girlfriend's mother. "Santana, I didn't know your grandmother was Patty."
"The one and only. I wasn't aware that you two were friends." Her grandmother looked up at her with a nod and a large smile.
"Yes we're on the counsel together, it was Katherine who offered to pay for the medical expenses."
Santana tried not to let the shocked expression she felt show on her face but she could see by Katherine's reaction that it had. "That was very nice of you, thank you for offering."
"For a woman as amazing as your grandmother this town would do absolutely anything."
It was then that Patty Lopez connected the dots. "Brittany is your daughter. How did I never piece that together before?" At the mention of her daughters name Katherine smiled and it took Santana by surprise. In that moment it was clear just how much Katherine loved Brittany and it caused Santana to think that maybe the woman wasn't as big of a cold hearted bitch as she originally thought. "I thought I knew her when you introduced us at the party, but now I feel so silly for not remembering."
Before anyone could speak again someone in a suit came up behind them and tapped Katherine's arm gently. "I'm sorry to interrupt but we're ready for you Mrs. Pierce."
"Sorry, duty calls, have a great day ladies. So good to see you Patty, I'll have to stop by soon so we can go over some of those recipes if you're up for it. It was very nice to see you again Santana." Both Lopez women watched as the tall blonde walked away, Santana's mind hadn't stopped racing every since she heard the mention of the woman's last name.
"You and Katherine Pierce are friends? As in the Pierce family that owns half this town?" Santana finally spoke as she pushed her grandmothers wheelchair towards the elevator.
Her grandmother grinned. "Yes we are. Her and your mother were friends way back when and I'm pretty sure they own most of the town now, not just half."
"Why do you seem so shocked? Haven't you been seeing Brittany for awhile now?"
"Yeah but I guess not connecting the dots runs in the family." She forced a smile in her grandmother's direction as they got into the elevator. She was still so shocked that her girlfriend hadn't told her the whole truth. The anger was starting to bubble up in her chest as much as she was trying to hide it from her grandmother it was there. It felt like she didn't know the woman at all and that more than anything else pissed her off. The night at the police station flashed through her mind, how they had suddenly gotten off on trespassing charges, and how people were apologizing to Brittany as though it was all their fault. She had thought it was the woman's charm when in reality it was her last name. A last name that was plastered on almost every building in Port Hope.
She drove her grandmother home and almost as soon as the elder woman was inside their family home Santana felt the rage she had been trying to keep at bay boil over. Fifteen minutes later she pulled up to the gate which happened to be opened, it generally was during the day so that people could admire the plantations beauty. She parked her car in the main driveway, not caring if she blocked anyone from getting in or out.
She stormed up the steps and rang the doorbell. She didn't care how much money Brittany's family had or the size of their house, she didn't take anyone's shit and she was going to make that known. She braced herself as the door started to open but smiled when she was greeted with a maid instead of Brittany.
"Hi there, how can I help you?"
"Hi, I'm looking for Brittany."
The woman smiled. "One moment." Sure enough a moment later the door opened again and this time it was Brittany that was standing in front of her.
"Santana, you're home." Brittany let out slowly as she took in Santana's angry features. This wasn't going to be good and she knew it.
TBC…
A/N: Please don't kill me, I know it's been far to long since I've updated and all I can say is children keep you busy!
Edit: Thank you all for those who mentioned the spacing/time line issue. There was in my original version spacing that made things make a little more sense but apparently fanfiction didn't want to add. I think it should be fixed now. Thank you all again and hopefully it's a little easier to understand now.
