Four POV

For the next few days, the house was silent.

When we were at school, we didn't talk to anyone, including each other. We didn't eat lunch together. Even in the house we didn't speak. Zeke stayed outside and shot hoops by himself. Shauna constantly threw up in the bathroom. Uriah and Marlene stole the car every day after school to go somewhere. Lynn stayed in the living room, reading book after book after book after book. Christina refused to leave her room, even for school. And when Will tried talking to Christina, she screamed at him and he stormed out of the house, stole my motorcycle and left.

No one saw him since.

And I had a feeling that Will wasn't going to be the first one to crack.

I spent all my time cooking food for everyone, even though nobody came down to eat when I cooked (yes, yes, I could cook. Get over it). But the next morning there was always less food in the kitchen, which meant that they ate when they thought everyone else was asleep. But, by the end of the week, there was so much leftovers that I was surprised we could close the refrigerator.

On Saturday, I was eating lunch by myself in the kitchen and staring out of the window at the pouring rain. Suddenly, I heard the front door slam open and shut, followed by the sound of shouting.

I hurried out of the kitchen to see who it was. Marlene's face was tear-streaked and Uriah's was red with anger.

"I can't believe you!" Uriah yelled. "It's not their fault-"

"You can't believe me?" Marlene cried. "I can't believe you! Siding with them after they-"

"You're being unreasonable-"

"Unreasonable?!" She laughed shakily. "Did you see her arms?!"

"What's going on?" Christina intervened, walking into the doorway. At that moment, I realized that Shauna, Lynn, and Zeke were silently standing in the corner of the room, just like I was. Marlene and Uriah realized this as well.

"Nothing," Uriah's snapped, not removing his venomous glare from Marlene. "Marlene's just-"

"You!" Marlene screamed, marching over to Christina and jabbing a finger into her chest. "This is your fault!" She looked over at Shana, Zeke and Lynn. "And your's!"

"What-" Christina started, her eyes wide.

"No!" she screamed. "You can't say one freaking word, you hear me?! I'm so sick and tired of you guys treating other kids like crap because your lives suck!"

Christina glared at Marlene furiously. "You have no right-"

"To stick up for the people you hurt? The people you judged? The people who you hurt so much you caused them to hurt themselves?!"

The world seemed to turn to a stop.

"Wh-what?" Christina squeaked. "What are you-"

"While you pathetic people were sitting here and feeling sorry for yourselves, this asshole-" she jerked her thumb at Uriah, "and I went to visit a certain Tris Prior at the hospital."

Everyone stayed silent.

Tears started to fall down Marlene's face. "And you know what I saw? Her arms were covered with cuts- fresh cuts."

I felt my lunch starting to come up.

"You don't know if that was us," Christina snapped quietly. "Don't just assume that we caused her to- to- do that!"

"How dare you tell me what to think!" She looked at Zeke. "I didn't humiliate her in front of the entire school!" She looked at Shauna. "I didn't push her on the floor!" She looked at Lynn. "I didn't call her weak!" She looked at Christina. "I didn't tell her to kill herself!"

"You don't what I've been through," said Christina in a deadly quiet voice. "You don't know how much it hurt."

"Bitch," she hissed. Marlene never cursed. "You don't know what she's been through. You can't act all high and mighty just because your family died!"

I nearly toppled over.

When we first moved in together, we all agreed to never bring up our pasts unless someone said it was okay, which never happened. And Christina definitely wasn't okay with it.

Christina's eyes flashed with red-hot anger. She placed two hands on Marlenes shoulders and slammed her into the door. Marlene cried out in pain.

"At least I didn't try to kill myself over screwing with a random stranger at a party!" she shrieked. "You fucking slut!"

I knew that Marlene took every word to heart ten times more than painfully than the most senstive person in the world would. She shut her eyes tightly and stood there for a moment before shoving Christina off of her and running out of the house into the pouring rain, slamming the door behind herself.

Tris POV

An hour after Marlene left, my mom arrived. She was a wreck: her hair was in a messy bun, her clothes were rumpled and it was obvious she had been crying. She hugged me so tightly that I could hardly breathe and she started crying about how she almost lost me again, and then she rushed into that 'I told you so' mode, complaining that she always told me to eat and I always refused. And then she started to talk about how the doctor also told her about the cuts on my arms and she made me show her them. And then she started sobbing about how I should never hurt myself because she couldn't stand to loose me. And I just took it all, because I was in absolutely no position to argue.

And then she started asking questions.

"Why didn't you listen to me when I told you to eat more?" my mom asked, tears filling her eyes.

I stayed silent.

"Why didn't you tell me you were still depressed?"

I stayed silent.

"Why didn't you tell me you had thoughts about hurting yourself?"

I stayed silent.

"What caused you to hurt yourself?"

Finally, I snapped. "Why was I so easy to give up on?"

She stayed silent.

She stood up and fixed her skirt, refusing to look me in the eye. "I guess that's my cue to leave."

My mother left, slamming the door behind her.

I groaned and put my head in my hands.

Why do I mess everything up?

Why can't anyone understand me?

Why doesn't anybody care?

Why am I always alone?

I didn't even realize I was crying until I heard the door open and close and felt the tears drip down my face. Expecting it to be my mom again, I looked up-

And saw Christina.

She was soaking wet. Her long hair was plastered to her back and her clothes were wrinkled and dripping all over the floor. Her eyes were obviously red from crying and when she opened her mouth, her voice was hoarse. But all the same, I never would have expected her to say the three words that she did, not in a million years.

"I'm sorry, Tris."
