A.N. thanks for all the reviews I love reading them.
"Bella has escaped from me. Find her"
Ignoring the roars of indignation from his family Edward informed them he would be there in a couple of days and hung up. Carlisle looked at the others in trepidation. Jasper was struggling to contain the rage he felt at Edwards statement.
"So she is his property now is she?" He spat with barely concealed fury. "That overbearing, self-righteous prick actually has the audacity to order us to find his wayward wife. Does he really think we'll just present her back to him so he can continue to abuse her?"
Carlisle looked ashamed. "We have to find her. She belongs with Edward."
"But not to him Carlisle and that is the difference. I for one am not convinced she even belongs with him." Rosalie screamed. "Alice said she wanted to be with the wolf, she didn't want him back. He just got put out because she rejected him and decided he had to have her. And as we all know no one could possibly be allowed to say no to the perfect Edward Cullen."
"Rose please. Edward loves Bella." Esme tried to interject.
"Edward loves Edward and no one else. And if you two didn't always bow down to him he wouldn't think he could just treat people like shit." She countered showing every piece of anger and disgust she felt. "You three disgust me."
"I am not going to allow Edward to treat Bella that way. She needs to be found yes, but turned and straight away." Jasper said in measured, clipped words. Everyone around could feel the contempt he felt for the situation and more especially for Alice, Carlisle and Esme.
"Jazzy, it would be best if you don't interfere. She is Edwards mate, it is up to him what happens." Alice purred while rubbing his arm.
"Alice. If you don't take your hand off me I will remove it myself, and you won't get it back." He turned his furious gaze to her and she shrank away terrified. "If you ever call me 'Jazzy' again I will remove your tongue. And if you EVER try to tell me what to do again, I will remove you head. Is that quite clear? Do not push me. Darlin"
Alice looked up at him with tears in her golden eyes. She watched her visions in horror as he decided to kill her again and again with varying degrees of torture until she slowly nodded her head. Realisation dawned that her future was bleak indeed if she stayed to fight for the life she had enjoyed. But it was non-existent if she helped Edward anymore. Loosing didn't sit well with Alice but she wasn't stupid either. Retreating to re-group was a far better option. "I won't help him anymore, I promise. But I won't help you either. I'm leaving now before he gets here so he can't read anything by accident. I'll stay away from him." With that she turned and ran up the stairs to pack.
Carlisle and Esme were completely shocked. Esme started to sob quietly. They had never imagined Alice would just up and leave. "Jasper. Please. You can't just let her leave. She is family. We need her."
"We don't need her." Jasper stated coldly. "She has manipulated each and every one of us to get things her own way. We are better off without her."
Jasper nodded. He knew she meant every word. She was terrified of him and what he would do if she betrayed him. But that didn't mean he trusted her at all. Besides Alice always looked after number one. If she was leaving with so little fight she had her reasons.
"What about you two?" he asked turning to Carlisle and Esme. "Will you help him or will you stay out of it?"
"I will help him find her." Carlisle said eliciting growls from the surrounding vampires, well not Esme. "But I will not allow his treatment of her to continue. She must be turned."
Esme nodded slowly. "Yes she must be turned" she almost whispered.
While Jasper could tell they meant every word, he also knew they would easily be persuaded to Edwards's side once they saw him again. Edward was too manipulative, using their thoughts against them and as Rose had said in Carlisle and Esme's eyes he could do no wrong.
Alice chose that moment to come back down the stairs. She said a tearful goodbye to the family and hugged Carlisle and Esme. Rosalie and Emmett turned away from her as she tried to hug them. Jasper just stood a little apart looking on.
"I am sorry you are disappointed in me Jasper" she said quietly. "I would offer a divorce but there is no need, we never married using our real names, you are free."
"I am disappointed that you don't see what was wrong with the whole situation Alice. You really don't get what you did wrong do you?" He countered sadly.
"I never wanted to hurt Bella. I would never hurt her physically but I suppose I can see how it looks. I have never seen anything to suggest that she won't become one of us. Despite all of Edward's ideas. I promise I won't help him, please don't hurt me." Alice begged.
"You keep your word darlin and there won't be a problem. When do you see him getting here?"
Alice's eyes went slowly vacant as she scanned the future. "He will be here late tomorrow. I can't see what he will do but.. he does not seem the same. I think you might be best waiting till he leaves again before trying to track Bella down. I'm not sure though it's very cloudy."
Jasper could tell she was being honest, she was also desperate and terrified. The emotions she was feeling made him wince. Part of him wanted to comfort her, but he couldn't. He needed her afraid to keep her in line.
"I won't say take care of yourself darlin, because you always do. I'll see you around no doubt. Sooner than you would like if you if you misbehave. Good bye Alice." Jasper gave her a small kiss on the forehead. It was all that was left of the love he had once had for her, not even sure now that she had loved him at all. He was happy it was over though, he felt free.
Alice got in her car and drove away. Oddly she wasn't angry with Jasper. They had run their course. It was time to move on. She wasn't angry with the family either, they had had a good run. She blamed Edward, if only he had listened to her none of this would have happened. But she would win in the end. As she reached the end of the drive she was overcome with a vision of the future. With a satisfied smirk she continued on her way. Everything was going to be just fine.
"Are you really just letting her go? That's ridiculous, for all we know she will meet up with Edward just down the road. Are you insane?" Rose asked Jasper incredulously.
"Alice knows more than anyone what I am capable of and what will happen to her if she betrays me. Her visions aren't working so well anyway so I doubt she'll see much. She claimed to have seen next to nothing of Bella since Volterra." Jasper said in deliberate, measured tones.
"But Jasper, how can you be so cruel to your wife?" A shocked Esme squealed in disbelief.
"Cruel!" He snarled, rounding on her "Cruel! How can you be so cruel to your daughter? How can you, who was abused as a human, stand for this? Don't you dare lecture me on cruelty." Esme shrank back into Carlisle's arms. Carlisle shrank away as well. None of them had ever seen Jasper like this and it was terrifying. They were getting a glimpse of the warlord of old.
Jasper thought he had put that man behind him, but this situation was causing the old and the new Jaspers to merge into an entirely new beast. What was it that was making him react so violently? He wanted to be alone to analyse his feelings. The emotions from everyone else were too suffocating.
"Alice may have been my wife, and I did love her once but that has long since passed. We knew we were not going to be together forever. We just enjoyed each other's company. But Alice's controlling nature and the fact she manipulated everything to suit her own ends has killed any love I felt for her." Jasper sighed but not with regret.
Esme and Carlisle went upstairs to be alone. Jasper monitored their emotions, there was a lot of guilt and anger. But who or what they were guilty and angry about was anyone's guess. Rosalie and Emmett went to hunt so Jasper used the solitude to review what was going on.
Somehow, at the reception, Bella had broken free of Edwards control. Looking back Jasper thought he could pin point the exact moment. When they were dancing! Was it his kiss that woke her up? A romantic notion to be sure, but hardly realistic. Was it wishful thinking? Was it caused by some sort of affection or was it something else. Jasper had always felt Bella had some sort of latent shield. Edward and Aro not being able to read her mind and Jane not effecting her all pointed to this. Perhaps in some kind of self defence mechanism it had grown to protect her mind from Edwards's control. Was it simply the straw that broke the camel's back in the situation she was in? He could hypothesise about it forever and not really discover the truth.
The fact remained that somehow she had broken free of Edward's control and then gotten away from him while on their honey moon. He could only imagine the terror she must have felt in those days while alone with that control freak. There was no love lost between Jasper and Edward. Jasper did have a wry smile at the thought of Bella getting one up on Edward. Then he remembered Edwards last words "Find her," He knew Edward would never let her go. So Bella would need protection and turning. It would be the only way to keep her safe from the Volturi and stop Edward. No, Jasper was going to have to find her. For some reason the thought of seeing Bella again gave him a thrill. He was looking forward to meeting the real her as it was obvious the girl they thought they knew was not her.
Late the next day the family were congregated in the main room of the house waiting for the imminent arrival of Edward. The time had been spent in discussion after discussion about what to do with Bella, with Edward, with the wolves. About how and why to find Bella, and what they would do to stop Edward from trying to control her again.
Esme had received a phone call two hours before from the house keepers employed for Isle Esme. They had reluctantly informed her that the island appeared to have been hit by some sort of freak storm. Most of the house was destroyed as was about sixty percent of the trees were gone. They could not understand what had happened as there had been no storms that they knew of. Esme had been devastated. They all knew of course what had happened.
"Edward has had a temper tantrum has he?" Rosalie asked almost nonchalantly. "Oh dear, will you send him off to bed with no supper?" She mocked like an adolescent.
"He must have been very upset to find Bella gone, worried as well no doubt." Esme attempted to justify Edwards behaviour.
"Fuck, Esme!" Emmett yelled. "How can you justify that? I get shit if I knock one tree down. He is drawing attention to himself and us."
"Enough! You will not speak to Esme that way" Carlisle yelled. "Let's just wait until he gets here to hear what he has to say for himself."
It was obvious to Jasper that Carlisle was feeling the strain. Emmett was right, Edward was risking the whole family with such behaviour. After that they took up their positions waiting for his arrival. Emmett was being comforted quietly by Rosalie. Esme and Carlisle holding each other, feeling concerned and afraid of what was to come.
That family was falling apart, that much was certain. Jasper knew he would not come back once he had left. Rose and Em would probably never accept Alice back after what she had done. Nor would they be the same with Carlisle and Esme. Edward would be a pariah. Not that it would bother him, his superiority complex made him disliked by most anyway. Hopefully though some censure from his "family" would be enough to wake him up to his own behaviour. Hopefully, somehow Jasper doubted it though.
"He's coming" Jasper said quietly as a range of furious emotions came to his notice. "and he's pissed."
Silently they watched as Edward ran into view. He looked dishevelled and untidy. His clothes were torn and filthy, his hair was full of twigs and leaves, his eyes black and wild. He was scanning the area almost frantically with his eyes, while no doubt doing the same with his gift. He growled loudly at someone's thoughts as he slammed open the front door and skidded to a halt.
"Where is she? Have you found her yet?" He demanded imperiously glaring at Emmett.
"Why would we want to find her?" Rosalie asked in the same imperious tone. "Why has she left you Edward? What did you do to her? and why EXACTLY did she need to ESCAPE?" she shrieked at him.
"She is my wife, what I do with her is none of your concern." He snapped back. "NOW WHERE IS SHE?"
"We do not know. We are not going to help to find her so you can keep her a prisoner in her own mind." Jasper returned.
Edward screamed in frustration. "Carlisle. Are you going to stand for this?" he shrieked. "You are the head of the coven. Tell them to help me."
"I am sorry son but you have to realise what you, what we have been doing is wrong. It is tantamount to abuse and needs to stop. We will of course help you find Bella but you must agree that she be turned at once. It is the only sensible option that will keep us all safe from the Volturi." Carlisle said with a heavy heart. He also knew that Edward would not take it well.
True to Carlisle's prediction, Edward roared in frustration then rounded on Carlisle and Esme. He demanded, pleaded, begged and threatened but to no avail. Everyone was surprised at Carlisle standing up to him. Rosalie expected him to capitulate long before Edward finished his rant and bowed his head in defeat.
Jasper however wasn't surprised. He had felt Carlisle's determination but had helped maintain it in light of Edwards demands. He smirked to himself. Edward really was a baby sometimes. He expected everything to be handed to him.
Edward growled at Jaspers thoughts. He could not believe Carlisle refused him. Why could they not see how he needed Bella human and obedient? Why would they think his treatment of her abuse? That was ludicrous. He loved her, he protected her, even from himself. He would never abuse her. If treasuring someone was abuse they were the confused ones not him.
"Edward son why don't you tell us what happened between you both" Carlisle practically begged.
"Things were wonderful, although she did seem a little strange, she kept asking questions and doing things she knew I don't approve of. She wanted chocolate at the airport!" he exclaimed scandalized.
Rosalie, Emmett and Jasper could barely contain the snorts of laughter.
"Imagine a human girl liking chocolate, how terrible!" Rose declared in a high falsetto voice.
Edward growled loudly. "I wouldn't expect you to understand the higher standards of behaviour Rosalie." He spat, Rosalie just laughed. "Bella began to question if we would consummate our marriage. I had to tell her again that that would never happen. She really tried my patience that night. However for the next few days she was back to normal and I had a wonderful time, cooking for her, taking her on hikes around the island and so on. Alice had packed her some rather risqué swim suits so I made sure she was properly covered. But then one day she simply ignored all my efforts and walked out onto the beach, stripped down to her bikini and lay down. There were boats everywhere, all those men could see her. I was unable to act. She was so defiant. And later when I tried to talk to her and discuss her behaviour and how she was spoiling things, she stopped listening to me. I had to leave to hunt and when I came back she was gone. It was awful."
Again the three laughed loudly.
"I can image it was horrific. What terrible behaviour, imagine wanting to sunbathe and relax on your honeymoon. It's so deeply shocking I can barely believe it." Rosalie laughed scathingly. "It must have been so terrible for you Edward. Can you believe that she actually might expect something so crass, as sex on her honeymoon? Or that she might want to do something different to you. I can't imagine how she didn't enjoy being dragged around the island, and force fed healthy food. She is lucky you were there to keep her on the straight and narrow."
Edward roared in frustration. "Don't you understand, that is not what I expect from my wife. All she had to do was what I told her and she couldn't even manage that" He launched toward Rosalie but was stopped abruptly by Jaspers hand round his throat.
"That is not the kind of behaviour I would expect from a man toward his wife!" Jasper spoke in a cold, dangerous tone. "Niether is keeping her quiet and submissive through mind control, you pathetic sack of shit." He threw Edward across the room. "How dare you stand there and declare shock and outrage when you have been abusing her. You disgust me Edward. You really need to grow up."
"Look son you need to calm down, maybe you should go and hunt, then change. I am sure you'll see things for clearly afterwards." Carlisle attempted to distract Edward.
Edward agreed reluctantly, but only to get away from the appalling thoughts directed at him from Rosalie and Emmett. It was then he noticed Alice's silence. She would have spoken up for him. Where was she?
"Where is Alice?" he asked
Jasper stepped forward and got right in Edwards face. He was projecting fear and dread. Edward shrank away from him.
"She has left. She will not help you. She has realised what she was doing was very wrong. She will stay away from you." Jaspers voice was dripping with distain. "I mean it Edward. LEAVE. HER. ALONE."
"What did you do to her? Did you threaten her? You are wrong, Alice will always help me." Edward declared in disbelief.
"Not this time Eddie." Jasper said with a laugh. "You won't get your own way this time. I will make sure you don't"
The two protagonists stared at each other, neither wanting to give ground, neither willing to back down. Jasper replayed every idea he ever fantasised about to kill Edward. He let his mind free rein with all the horrendous things he knew about. Edward blanched at the images he was seeing. Knowing without a doubt, that if he had to, Jasper would kill him to stop him. Edward would never allow such a thing. He knew he was better than Jasper. He would just have to be careful.
Without another word Edward ran out into the forest to hunt. Emmett glanced at Jasper and with a nod took off after him. They didn't trust him one little bit.
Jasper smiled to himself. The arrogant, confidence he felt from Edward told him everything he needed to know. He was not going to back down, He was going to hunt Bella down and try to control her again. Jasper vowed there and then he would kill him if that was what it took, but he would never let him hurt Bella again.
All heads turned at that moment as a car made its way up their long drive.
