As they shut off the music and began to clean, something seemed off. It was a little too calm, a little too quiet. It wasn't just that the music was gone, there was something not quite right about the ambience.
"Finn do you hear that?" Rachel said putting a hand on Finn's shoulder.
"Hear what?" he said.
"Exactly," she beamed, "Come on." She grabbed him by the wrist as she headed to the closest exit, as she pulled the door open an ecstatic smile graced her lips.
"It stopped, the rain stopped," she said looking up at the sky. "Look Finn, stars."
"Whoa, you're right," he said.
The other glee clubbers gathered at the door, so happy about the rain finally stopping that they all but forgot that they were all in deep shit for throwing that party.
"Okay we have to tell everyone,"Lauren said, running toward the gym.
"Lauren, we can't wake them up," Rachel called after her.
"Screw that, I'm with Lauren," Mike said.
"Me too," Kurt agreed.
At that Finn and Rachel shrugged and followed the others to the gym.
"Good news everyone!" Puck cried, snapping the refugees awake.
"What the hell Puck it's three in the morning," Burt said groggily.
"The storm is over," Rachel said excitedly. "We can all go home."
"Hey, she's right, listen," Carole said.
"Hey buddy," Puck said shaking the shelter leader awake. "Your work here is done."
"Okay everybody, back to bed," The shelter leader said, still half asleep.
"The hell with that," Burt said, scrambling up, "I'm going to go make sure my car isn't somewhere in the Atlantic by now."
"Wait just a minute," Sue said, reentering the gym, "Where is everybody going?"
"Home," Mr. Schuester said, "the storm is over Sue, isn't that great?"
"But-
"Oh and don't worry about coming in tomorrow, the superintendent released a statement via radio, no classes tomorrow, I guess he figured a day off would give the students and teachers a chance to get everything in order."
"But-
"Woo!" the students exclaimed in unison, overhearing Mr. Schuester.
"That's right, no school, enjoy your freedom kids," Mr. Schue continued.
Before Sue could get another word in edgewise the refugees began to gather up their bags and sleeping mats and headed for the doors, leaving Sue alone with her disappointment.
"So, are your parents going to let you keep him?" Rachel said, petting crash as Finn waited for Burt and Carole to return. The tow truck was able to get their car to an impound lot before it suffered too much water damage, but they would still need to drive Carole's car for the next couple of weeks.
"Yeah, Burt's a big softie," Finn said, scratching the dog's chin.
"What about you?" Are you going to be okay?" She said, resting her head on his shoulder.
"Yeah," he said. "They're going to give me a cast today and hopefully give me some medication that won't make me go crazy."
"Well, I have to admit you were pretty cute," she said.
"You know, even though I broke my arm and got high and had to be stuck in the school for three days straight, I have to say this weekend could have gone a lot worse."
"What are you on right now exactly?" Rachel said, narrowing her eyes at him.
"Tramadol," he said shrugging.
"Why hello you crazy kids," Kurt said taking a seat next to them. "So we have the day off, whatever will we do with it?"
"I get to go to the hospital," Finn said.
"And I get to wring out all of my beanie babies," Rachel chimed in.
"Okay, after the fact then," Kurt said.
"Breadstix?" Finn suggested, shrugging.
"Awesome, I'm going to call Blaine, don't tell him I said this but I was actually kind of disappointed that his house was in the safe zone."
"Well aren't you Mr. Selfless," Rachel joked.
"Don't judge me," Kurt said putting his hand on the reciever. "Hey Blaine," he said brightly. "Yep, just got home."
As Burt and Carole returned in the tow truck Finn turned to Rachel. "That's them, I'll see you soon okay?" he said, pressing his lips to Rachel's temple before getting up to join his mom and Burt.
"See you soon."
"Come on Crash," Rachel said taking the dog to Kurt after Finn disappeared into the distance.
"So, Breadstix tonight?" Kurt said as Rachel handed the dog over to him.
"I wouldn't miss it," she said and with that she hugged her friend and started down the road.
Stay tuned for the epilogue!
