Reba's breathing stopped as she watched her son's car flip over and over...
The next thing she knew everything was dead silent. The crowd, the cars, everything. She watched against her own will as Shelby's car came to a stop and landed upside down. She didn't hear the noise start back up again, and she didn't see the paramedics rushing across the track. She was too lost in her own mind.
"Mama i wanna take you drivin." His dad had taught him to drive the golf cart and Shelby now wanted to show his mama his new skills.
"Shelby hun i'm gettin ready right now." Reba pulled the last curler out of her big red hair and set it on the vanity, reaching for her mascara.
Before she could even touch it, Shelby snatched up the mascara and put his hands on his hips. "Mama let's just do it and get it over with." He knew his mom was nervous, which made him giggle, it made him feel like the grown up.
Reba chuckled at her sons authoritativeness and nodded. "Alright, but don't crash!"
Shelby puffed out his chest and put his hands on his hips. "I ain't gonna crash, i'm the best driver there is!" he exclaimed while pointing his thumb at his chest.
Reba laughed and stood up, letting Shelby take her hand and lead her out of the bedroom. "Alright, let's see what chya got."
Shelby pulled her all the way out to their shed that held the golf cart and he jumped trying to reach the keys on the hook. Reba grabbed the keys and handed them to him. He gave her a big smile before climbing into the drivers seat and patting the seat next to him.
Shelby smiled up at her with a gapped tooth grin. "Ready?"
Reba reluctantly nodded. She was about to let her five year old son, who couldn't even reach the keys, drive her around in the bumpy yard. "Let's do it bud." She wrapped her arm around the back of Shelby's seat and gripped the rail with her hands as he started the golf cart and slowly made his way out of the shed and onto the grass. "This isn't so bad." She mumbled to herself as Shelby cruised further down the yard.
Without warning Shelby slammed on the gas pedal and took off full speed. Reba's eyes widened as she practically slammed back into her seat and gripped tightly to the rails. "Isn't this fun mama!" Shelby exclaimed with a giant grin while making sharp turns around trees and going as fast as he could. Reba didn't say anything and held on tighter to the rails. "Yee Haw!" Shelby had sped up the small hill and they'd caught some air, landing with a thud. Reba looked ahead startled as Shelby brought the golf cart to a stop and looked up at her. "When i grow up i wanna be a race car driver!"
Reba got rid of her shock and looked down at her son. "You do!?" She played along with his enthusiasm. It warmed her heart seeing her son get so excited over something.
Shelby nodded. "Yup. And when i'm a big famous racer you and daddy can go see me race, like when i go see you sing!"
Reba laughed and ruffled his hair. "I can't wait!" Shelby smiled big and started up the golf cart again, speeding around as fast as he could, with Reba holding on for dear life.
Reba shook her head of the memory, focusing on the situation. She headed for the stairs that lead to the track but Narvel pulled her back. "Reba stay here." She began to protest but he looked her sternly in the eye. "Stay. Here." And with that Narvel headed down the stairs and down to the track, over to the ambulance. Reba watched as they pulled Shelby out of the car and onto a stretcher. She felt as if all the breathe had been knocked out of her and she began gasping for air.
Kelly and Brandon ran up horrified at was going on at the tracks. Kelly took notice of Reba and quickly went to her side. Brandon tore his eyes away from the track and followed his fiancee. "Reba what happened?"
"Shelby..and...the car flipped...and oh god." She started hyperventilating and Kelly wrapped her arm around her shoulder.
"Reba calm down. Deep breathes. Deep breathes."
Reba tried to follow Kelly's instructions, but her heart felt like it was being ripped out of her chest. "Where's dad?"
"He's down there."
Brandon nodded. "Kelly stay with her." Kelly nodded as Brandon ran down the stairs and onto the track.
"Everything is going to be ok." She rubbed Reba's arm reassuringly.
Reba didn't respond, she crossed her arms and watched all the commotion going on down on the track, worried. Moments later, which felt like hours to her, Narvel came bounding up the steps. "Kelly take Reba and get to the hospital."
Kelly nodded while Reba stared at Narvel confused and terrified. "Narvel what's going on, is Shelby ok?"
"Reba right now I need you to go to the hospital. No questions just go."
"Narvel what is going on!"
"AllI know is that they're taking Shelby to the hospital and we need to be there." and with that Narvel raced back down the stairs before Reba could say another word.
She stood there in shock as Kelly tugged on her arm. "Come on." She gently pulled Reba towards the exit. She stumbled behind Kelly while continuously looking over her shoulder at the track. She felt as if she was going to throw up, and it wasn't because of the baby.
Kelly managed to pull Reba all the way to her car and quickly drove to the hospital. She practically had to run after Reba as she rushed into the building and frantically began asking the receptionist questions. "I need to know-"
"Hey, you're Reba McEnti-"
"I know who I am! I need to know where my son is. Shelby Blackstock." She had cut the receptionist off, sure it was rude, but that was the least of her worries at the time being. She impatiently waited for the lady to search through the computer.
"Reba!"
Reba turned and saw Narvel walking towards her. She abandoned the front desk and quickly walked over to him. "Narvel what is going on?" She demanded an answer.
"Reba calm down." He tried to put his hands on her shoulders but she shoved them off.
"No I will not calm down, what the hell is going on!"
Narvel sighed and began pacing, running his hands through his hair, while Reba stared at him waiting impatiently for an answer. "I don't know." He stopped and avoided Reba's gaze, starring at the ceiling. "I got there and they were pulling Shelby out of the car, he was pretty banged up, and unconscious. They rushed him into the emergency room as soon as we got here."
Reba's heart felt like it was being ripped in half as she watched the strongest man she knew get tears in his eyes. She felt her own tears building up and she sat down, unable to support her own weight any more. It was starting to sink in. Shelby could be seriously hurt. They could lose their son.
"Mr. Blackstock?"
Narvel and Reba both lifted their heads to see one of the doctors. Reba quickly stood up and went to Narvel's side as the doctor approached them. "Yes?"
"Hi, i'm Dr. Greene. Your son, Shelby, has a broken arm and has gone through some head trauma. His car flipped, you say?"
Narvel swallowed the lump in his throat and swallowed, he felt Reba's hand hold onto his arm. "Yeah, it rolled over a couple times before landing upside down."
The doctor nodded. "Is he going too be ok?" Reba asked in a shaky voice.
The doctor sighed. "We're not too sure."
"What do you mean not too sure?" Reba asked frantically.
"What I mean is, your son suffered some major head trauma, and we'll have to do an MRI after we operate on his arm, to see the extent of the damage that may, or may not have been caused. Still we won't know how bad it is until he is fully conscious."
"And when will that be?" Narvel had spoken this time, which Reba was glad for. There was only so much she could take in.
"After we're done with his arm and the MRI it could take from an hour to ten hours. We just have to be patient."
Narvel nodded. "Thank you doctor."
The doctor nodded and gave them a small smile before leaving. Narvel looked down at Reba and quickly wrapped his arms around her, kissing the top of her head. She wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest. Glad Narvel hadn't said anything. Glad he hadn't said 'It'll all be ok'. They didn't know if it would be ok, the doctors didn't even know if it'd be ok. The last thing she needed right now was false hope.
She felt his arms loosen and his body tense up. She looked up at him confused, and turned around too follow his gaze. There, stumbling and giggling out of the double doors was Tom with a doctor by his side. "Everything seems to be just fine, there might be a little soreness here and there but we'll prescribe you some pain killers for that. Other then that you're good to go."
"Sweet." The doctor left and Reba clenched her fist. Before Narvel could register what was going on Reba pushed away from him and marched her way over to Tom. Tom stumbled and leaned against the wall for support. "Hey there lil red! How ya doin."
Reba's jaw clenched and she stared at him infuriated. "What the heck is wrong with you?"
He shrugged. "I dunno." he laughed.
She looked at him and her eyes widened. "Are you drunk?!"
"No." He burped and laughed. "Yes."
"You're an idiot!"
"And you're cute!" he slurred out in a childish manner.
"I swear to God if anything happens to my son you will end up back in this hospital with a lot more then a little scratch!"
Tom snorted. "Whatever you say sweetheart."
Narvel could see this was about too get ugly, so he quickly wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her back right as she was bending her arm back to hit him. "Reba stop."
But she didn't. She pushed against Narvel and flung her fist while kicking her feet, trying to get a hit at Tom. Narvel picked her up and turned around, arms still around her waist. "Stop it, Narvel stop it!"
He carried her around the corner away from all the stares.
Great. Narvel thought. They had cameras out.
"You need too leave." Kelly quickly approached Tom. He was about to say something but she cut him off. "And I would do it before the cops get here and find your drunk ass."
Tom nodded and quickly left.
Around the corner in a secluded hallway Narvel set Reba down and removed his arms from around her waist. She turned to him furious. "What was that?!"
Narvel eyes widened. "Shouldn't I be asking you that! That wasn't even you back there Reba!"
"Yes it was."
"Since when do you ever swing your fists at anybody?!"
"He's the reason our son is in here!"
"It was an accident." He tried to put his hands on her shoulders but she pushed him away.
"He was drunk! He got in the car drunk and drove drunk, and it's all my fault!" She shouted through tears and leaned heavily against the wall.
"This is not your fault."
She looked at him with tears in her eyes. "I knew he was drinkin. I saw him buy alcohol, and he said it was for a friend. I knew it wasn't but i didn't say anythin, if i had just said something, anything! We wouldn't be here right now!"
"That doesn't make it your fault, it makes Tom an idiot."
"Narvel, it's my fault. If something happens too Shelby, it will be my fault. Because i didn't say anything! And now our son is hurt, because of me!"
"Damn it Reba, stop it!" She looked at her husband, shocked at his sudden outburst. "I'm not gonna let you just sit here and blame yourself for all this! It was an accident and there wasn't anything you could've done to prevent it from happening."
"Yes there was! I could've stopped him from drinkin, or driving!"
"Reba do you really think if you told him to stop drinking, or driving, that he would've listened to you? That man, if you can even call him a man, is a sore loser and an arrogant idiot. There was nothing that you could do."
She stared at him with tears running down her face. "I feel so helpless, and so out of control right now and it scares me Narvel. It really does."
"Baby come here." He wrapped his arms around a sobbing Reba and rested his head on top of hers. "I know you're scared, we all are. Now i'm not gonna say that everything's going to be ok, because i don't know that. But what I do know is that Shelby's tough, and a fighter. Those doctors are doing everything they can, and we just have to pray like crazy that he'll be ok." he felt her nod into his shoulder and he tightened his arms around her. It seems just yesterday they'd found out Reba was pregnant with Shelby.
"Reba i think we should go see a doctor."
She shook her head and pushed away from the toilet she'd just thrown up in. "I'm fine." She stood up and washed her face at the sink.
"Babe you've been sick since the last few days of our honey moon, that's not exactly fine." Reba rolled her eyes and opened the cabinet, searching over the shelves. "What are you looking for?"
"Aspirin." She continued looking over the shelves, her heart stopped when she came across something. She pulled out the box and turned to Narvel.
He glanced at the box. "I don't think you can blame your period for throwing up."
She shook her head. "No, Narvel i'm late."
He looked at her confused. "I don't know what that means."
"My periods late, i haven't gotten it." She looked down at the box and back up at her new husband. "Narvel I think i'm pregnant."
He stood there shocked for a second before kicking into gear. "You stay right here, i'm getting a test!" Reba nodded and before she could say something he was out the door.
He returned within 15 minutes and handed Reba the test. "Here."
"Thanks." She looked down at the box then back at Narvel. They stared at each other for a moment.
"Aren't you gonna take it?"
"Umm yeah." She took a deep breathe and reached for the bathroom door knob with shaky hands. He watched as she disappeared through the door and sat down on their bed, running his hand through his hair. He quickly stood up and began pacing, and then to looking out the window. Every little thing possible that could make time go by. He knocked on the door and walked in when he heard a faint 'come in' He found her sitting on the edge of the bathtub, holding the test and shaking her knee. "Does it say anything yet?"
She silently shook her head and Narvel turned to the sink. He gripped the counter and hung his head, counting the seconds in his head. "Narvel?"
He looked up over at Reba to see her crying. "Honey what's wrong?"
She shook her head and smiled through the tears. "I'm pregnant." Narvel walked over to her and hugged her neck. She let out a laugh and hugged him back, burying her head into his shoulder. "I'm gonna be a momma." He hugged her tighter and kissed the side of her head.
Narvel was snapped out of his thoughts by the clatter of a clipboard a nurse had dropped on the ground. He looked around the waiting room. It was pretty empty, a person or two there. He looked across from him at Kelly and Brandon. Kelly was reading a magazine while Brandon was on his iPhone, his free hand intertwined with Kelly's. He looked to his left at Reba. She'd fallen asleep about half an hour ago and was heavily leaning against Narvel, her head on his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around her and kissed her forehead. They'd been here for three hours and had only gotten one update on Shelby, and that was just to inform them they were done operating on his arm and taken him for testings and MRI's. He didn't know what exactly they were doing, but it was irritating as hell not knowing his condition.
As if his irritation was sensed, the doctor came out of the double doors and walked over to him. "Mr. Blackstock."
Kelly and Brandon quickly stood while Narvel nudged Reba awake. She looked around confused for a moment before her eyes landed on the doctor and she shot up to her feet. She stumbled a little and Narvel placed his hands on her waist preventing her from tripping over her own feet. "How is he?" He felt Reba grip onto his hand.
"He's awake. We ran the tests, everything came back clean. He's perfectly fine."
"Oh thank God." Reba immediately wrapped her arms around
Narvel's neck and hugged him. He hugged her back, holding her as close to him as possible. Shelby was ok. Everything was going to be ok.
"He's a very lucky young man. Accident like that could've caused some serious damage."
Reba tore herself away from Narvel. "Can we see him?"
The doctor smiled. "Of course, right this way." He lead them down the hallway and to Shelby's room. "He may still be a little tired from all the meds, so try not to over whelm him."
Reba nodded before rushing into the room. She stopped halfway to his bed and put her hands over her heart and tried not to cry. "Oh baby."
"Hey ma." Shelby shifted in his bed. He had a cast on his arm and a few bruises here and there. Other then that he was completely fine.
She made her way over to his bed and hugged him tightly, making sure she didn't bump his cast. "I'm so glad you're ok, how are you feeling? Are you sore, are-"
He laughed. "Mom i'm fine."
"Yes you are!" She hugged him tightly again.
"If the car hadn't of rolled i would've beat that sucker!"
Narvel laughed. "You already did Sheelbs."
Shelby grinned. "I know, i just can't wait till my arm heals so that i can get back to racing."
Reba's face fell. "You still wanna race?"
"Of course I do."
"You can't be serious!"
"Reba..." Narvel put his hand on her shoulder.
She ignored him. "Shelby you just got hurt!"
"And you expect me to give up? Mom how many times did you get hurt barrel racing?"
She bit her lip and raised her eyebrows. "Never. I was very good."
"Grandpa said you sucked."
"Alright i sucked! And i got hurt every now and then, but never bad enough to have to go to the hospital!"
"Mom..Dad can you give us a minute?"
Narvel reluctantly nodded. "I'll go see what Kelly and Brandon are up to."
"Mom i'm gonna keep racing."
"Shelby you got hurt!"
"So i should just quit?! I'm not the only person to ever get hurt!"
"Shelb-"
"No mom, just hear me out! I have never done anything in my life that has made me as happy as racing does. It's who i am mom! You know when you go onstage, and you get all excited and you feel like nothing can stop you? Well that's how i feel when i'm racing." Reba sighed and sat down in the chair next to his bed. "When i'm racing i feel..i feel like i'm me. I know that doesn't make sense, but it does to me. All my life i've always been known as Reba McEntire's son, i'm not complaining, but when i'm racing, i'm not the country superstars kid. I'm Shelby. And that's how people see me. Now i don't expect you to get it, but mom this is what makes me happy."
Reba nodded and looked up at Shelby. "I do get it. Back when i was your age I was just the rodeo winners daughter. And when i started singin, it made me my own person." She sighed and was silent fora minute, studying her son. "I'm not gonna pretend i'm completely ok with this, because i'm not. I'm scared to death of you gettin back in that car, but if it's what makes you happy, then you do it."
"I love you ma."
"I love you too." She got up and gave him a tight hug. "I'm gonna go go talk to the doctor and see how long you'll be in this place." She patted his shoulder and headed for the door. Thanking God her son was ok, and praying he'd keep him safe further along the road.
