Many, many thanks to Kat...I simply adore you. That is all.
THE STORY SO FAR...
Chapter 1- Picks up shortly where we left off at the end of V&V and LRM. Bella is beginning to suffer the early effects of pregnancy: tiredness, nausea; add to that her highly emotional state, and the result is a very worried Daddyward.
Highlights: Bella decides to write her mother's story. B&E make the first visit to the obstetrician. They travel to Forks for baby Whit's baptism. Edward gets word that he's been nominated for an Academy Award.
Chapter 2- Highlights: While babysitting for baby Whit, Edward thinks back to the night he got hammered while out with Emmett and the guys. His drunkenness resulted in a night of hot, uninhibited sex with his wife. We realize that Edward isn't as 'in control' as he's leading Bella to believe. Edward is interviewed by Rose about his Oscar nomination. The chapter concludes with B&E's trip to Aspen for Yves and Crystal's wedding.
Chapter 3- Highlights: The first four stops on Bella's book tour. Word gets out that 'Marie McCarty' is actually 'Bella Swan Cullen' wife of Edward (Cullen) Masen. After that, it's off to London for the BAFTAs.
Back in the States, B&E argue over the fact that Bella's publishers insist on holding the last night of her book tour on the same night as the Oscars. Bella and Alice begin to hatch a plan...
During the Chicago stop of the book tour, B&E are able to visit with Duke and the extended family. Then it's back to L.A. and the "Ellen" show, where Edward adlibs his way through a prank visit to Starbucks.
Chapter 4- Highlights: The Oscars. Bella surprises Edward by showing up when he was convinced that she had returned to Seattle for the final night of her book tour.
Emmett gets tongue-tied when he comes face to face with his Hollywood crush, Sandra B. Chris managed to have the last word during that encounter.
Chapter 5- Back in Seattle, Bella scouts a location for her Foundation's office. Another doctor visit occurs, during which they are able to hear the baby's heartbeat. When she learns that she's lost weight since the last visit, Bella feels extremely guilty. During the final night of the book tour, a crazy 'fan' threatens Bella, and is taken away by police.
Then it's off to Paris for filming "A Tale of Two Cities".
Chapter 6- In France, Edward develops an immediate dislike for the cook hired by Alec. It isn't just his imagination that Martin is flirting, but we learn rather quickly that although he has an eye for the ladies, Martin is harmless.
They do some sightseeing, Edward begins filming, and Bella uses that time to write.
During a visit to a book market, Bella is swarmed by paparazzi, elbowed in the ribs and knocked down. Even after being assured by the doctor that everything's okay, Edward isn't truly able to calm down until having a long phone conversation with his father.
Chapter 7- Edward rethinks their security and adds a female bodyguard to the team. Suspecting that Bella is pregnant, the paparazzi become even more aggressive. At chapter's end, Chris, Alice and Jasper arrive, surprising Bella.
Chapter 8- Edward continues filming, but has a day off here and there during which the group goes sightseeing.
As time passes, he grows weary of all the company and plans a few days' escape so he can be alone with Bella.
At the most recent doctor visit, B&E refuse to learn the baby's sex, deciding that they'd rather be surprised.
The gossip sites erupt with rumors that Edward is cheating when photos of him hugging and kissing his wife at a party are published making it look as if the woman in them is his costar and not Bella.
The chapter ends with Bella's meltdown over discovering her very first stretch mark, and Edward's botched attempt to comfort her during which he's able to feel the baby kick for the first time.
Chapter 9- As Bella and Edward prepare to leave France, they get word that Alice and Chris have been arrested for assaulting the paparazzi. After a predictably amusing morning at a Paris police station, they finally head to London.
While there, they do a remote interview with Ellen during which they reveal to the general public that Bella is indeed pregnant. The chapter ends with an appearance by both Bella and Edward on the Graham Norton show.
Let us begin this chapter where we left off…with the rest of Bella and Edward's visit to that show.
Enjoy!'

Chapter 10 - The Collapsing Chair and Glass Walls
EPOV
"Welcome back everyone, I'd like to thank our guests," Graham gestured in our direction, "Isabella, or should I say Marie McCarty," he paused and smiled at Bella, "Edward Masen, Cher Soloman, and Arthur O'Donnell for being here tonight."
The audience applauded appreciatively.
"Now, before we say goodbye," Graham spoke into the camera, "We have time for just a story or two from the collapsing chair."
We all turned our attention to the flat screen behind Graham and watched as a seemingly cheerful middle-aged woman appeared.
"Hello," Graham chirped.
"Hi there," the woman responded while giving a little wave.
"What's your name, dear?"
"Judith," the woman responded.
"And what's your story, Judith?"
"Alright, well, I know a chap who works security at Comedy Carnival, and I was thrilled to bits when, about a month ago, he promised to get me backstage to meet Cher Soloman," She hesitated and Graham turned to smirk at Cher, all while removing his hand from the lever, obviously prepared to allow Judith to finish her story, "I should add that I am Cher's biggest fan ever…"
Before the woman was able to speak another syllable, my lovely wife lunged across my lap, grasped the lever and pulled it back, causing both the chair and poor Judith to flip backward. When I glanced up at the screen, all that I could see were Judith's feet suspended in midair.
Graham guffawed as he turned toward Bella for some sort of explanation.
Bella merely shrugged and gave a sheepish grin, "I, uh, didn't like her shirt…"
Graham and Arthur laughed loudly while I just stared at my wife in shock. This sort of behavior was out of character for her. I mean, I've known her inner looney to run rampant on occasion, but more times than not, her brother is in the vicinity when it happens. Seeing that he was thousands of miles away, I was at a loss to explain this...
My gaze strayed to Cher then and, although she had plastered on a smile, I didn't miss the murderous glint in her eyes.
What is going on?
Outwardly, I pretended to shrug off the incident, while on the inside I remained utterly confused.
I barely paid attention as the next occupant of the red chair rambled on and on about her holiday in Cornwall. Without watching the screen, the subsequent roar of the audience told me that Graham had given her tale approximately ten seconds before pulling the lever.
Something had occurred between Bella and Cher and, as frustrating as it was, I knew I would have to wait until we got home to discover the details.
***L&EL***
"Edward, what crawled up your ass and died?" Admittedly, I'd been in a bad mood for days, and unlike Alec, who tends to shrug off my irritability, Jasper was having none of it.
He sat down at the far end of the sofa, watching me.
We were on set, but being the sullen bastard I'd been for the past few days, whenever I wasn't filming a scene, I'd taken to hiding in my trailer.
That was where Jasper had found me.
I grunted in response, while reading a text from Bella.
Hope you're having a better day. I love you. Really wish you'd let this go – B
I rubbed my eyes, but couldn't seem to shake the black mood. I typed a response, choosing to ignore the last part of her text.
I'm fine. I love you too. – E
Ever since Bella had divulged what Cher had said backstage at Graham's show, I'd been stewing.
After tossing the phone aside, I faced my brother-in-law.
Jasper was one of my best friends and, apart from my father, probably the most level-headed person I knew.
"You remember Cher Soloman from Graham's show the other night?"
Jasper frowned as he gave me a quick nod. "Yeah."
I then proceeded to relay what had happened backstage, as told to me by Bella. While I talked, I watched as Jasper's frown transformed into a scowl.
"It's not so much that there are assholes around like Cher who believe that Bella's success is somehow due to me. We long ago decided that we weren't ever going to change some people's bad opinions." I ran my hand through my hair. "It's more the fact that she felt the need to say such hurtful things to Bella. She obviously intended to upset her. What kind of person does that? Especially considering Bella's condition…"
As I sat there, wringing my hands, I could feel my temper rise once again.
Shit. I was never going to calm down…
Jasper cleared his throat. "The kind of person who, ten years ago when she was a nobody, convinced her wealthy boyfriend to invest in a small comedy club and make her the headliner."
My eyebrows shot up in surprise as I just stared at him, "What?"
"Yeah," Jasper smirked. "I do my homework, Edward. Before you appear on a talk show, I find out everything there is to know about the other guests." He gave a slight shrug, "Seems to me that maybe she'd like to believe that others haven't legitimately earned their success either..." Jasper stood and walked to the bar, pouring a drink before continuing, "I don't know, and I honestly don't care. People like her can wallow in their own misery." He paused and downed the amber colored liquid, "Dayum", he muttered while gazing appreciatively into the now-empty tumbler, "You know, this Scottish whiskey could make me seriously consider giving up my JD..." He paused then, seemingly lost in thought.
I cleared my throat, "Hey, should I step out?" I asked, the sarcasm in my tone hard to miss, "I mean, do you and the liquor need some alone time?"
Jasper's head snapped in my direction and he narrowed his eyes at me, "Jackass," he muttered with a laugh before throwing a bar cloth at my head.
I laughed while dodging it easily.
"Anyway," he began, back to the subject at hand, "it sounds as if Bella handled the situation just fine, but I take it you're not satisfied?"
I thought about that, the anger I was feeling toward Cher still very close to the surface. I shook my head, "I'm… not."
Jasper gave me a questioning look, "Edward, I think you should probably let this one go. Success breeds envy, and unfortunately, there will be other opportunities to confront people like Cher Soloman."
I sat back, a little of the anger dissolving as I thought about what he'd said. "You sound like Bella. She says that we need to take the high road and ignore Cher and others like her."
"Bella's a smart woman."
"Yeah, she is," I rubbed my face with my hands. "I'm just pissed off. I guess short of willing a house to drop out of the sky and land on that witch, everything else I'd like to do would get me arrested." I admitted before sighing in defeat.
"Hell, son, you are more like Alice than you realize." He remarked with a chuckle.
I grinned, not able to argue with the truth.
After a long pause, he spoke again. "Okay." He clapped his hands once, "As much as I enjoy trying to calm your crazy ass down, there is another purpose to my visit." He stated, before taking a seat on the sofa again.
"And what's that?" I asked, ignoring the jab.
"I got a call from Clint a little while ago. Enemy Combatant has been selected for screening during the Cannes film festival." He grinned widely, "Looks like you're going back to France a little sooner than expected, my friend."
It was strange how a seemingly small bit of information could change one's entire outlook, but that's precisely what Jasper's news did for me.
Cannes
I thought back to a year before when I'd attended the festival alone. Bella and I were newly engaged, and all I could think about then was beginning our life together.
Unfortunately, at the time, my work schedule always found a way to keep us apart.
Not any more
This year, instead of spending my entire visit missing her, I would get to have her by my side.
My heart swelled with happiness at the thought, and my bad mood, which had consumed most of my morning, evaporated.
***L&EL***
"Baby, what's the matter? I thought you'd be happy about Cannes?" Instead of smiling when I told her the news, my wife had begun to pace the length of the sitting room, fluffing the sofa pillows as she went.
"Bella," I moved until I stood in front of her and reached for her hand. "What's going on?"
Biting her lip, she looked up at me. "It's wonderful news. I am happy for you…" She hesitated.
"For us, Bella," I reminded.
"For us," she smiled then, "and I'm so proud of you, and want nothing more than to go to Cannes…"
"But?" I prompted her to continue.
She worried that lip again, "But… um, will going to France delay the finish of your film? I completely understand if it does," She was now back to pacing, "but as much as I've loved our time away, I'm anxious to go home. I mean, as it is now once we get back we'll only have a little over two months until the baby arrives and there's so much to do. With Dad getting married…"
"Bella" I tried to get her attention, but she was on a roll.
"And then the trip to L.A. for the premiere, it seems that we have less and less time to prepare for the baby…"
"Bella" I spoke a little louder this time.
"Thank heaven your mother is having the nursery painted, and I feel so selfish even asking because I know how important your career is, and you're so important to me, but our baby is just as important and I really hoped that we could have some time to choose the furniture and all the other things that we'll need…"
"Bella, take a breath," this time she finally paused her rambling and looked at me.
I felt my heart fracture as I watched her eyes fill with tears and her bottom lip begin to quiver. "Baby," I whispered while pulling her close and wrapping my arms around her, "Don't worry. Cannes is weeks away, and we'll only be there for three days, tops. There's no problem making up for the time I'll miss on set. It's not going to keep us here any longer than we planned."
"Promise?" She looked up at me as the tears escaped her eyes.
"I promise."
Mom had told me that at some point, Bella's instinct to 'ready the nest', would kick into high gear. I had been skeptical, but couldn't ignore what I'd just witnessed.
"Not much longer Bella and we'll be home."
I felt her relax fully in my arms then, as I silently swore that I would allow nothing and no one to cause me to break that promise.
***L&EL***
Mercifully, the next few weeks flew by. I was able to assure Bella that filming remained on schedule, so that we had time to squeeze in a visit with Doctor Girard in Paris before traveling on to Cannes.
As Bella's pregnancy progressed, my feelings of guilt grew each and every time I had to leave her. More than once, I'd wished I'd backed out of the film so that we could have spent this time happily back home in Seattle.
As it was, I longed for nothing more than to finish the movie so that I could devote the next few months to looking after her and our child.
Doctor Girard, as usual, assured that everything was as it should be. This was precisely what I'd needed to hear, so that by the time we reached Cannes, my anxiety had ebbed somewhat.
"No, Jasper. I'm not doing it." I barked into the phone. "The photo-call, press conference, and premiere were all I agreed to, no more. I want to spend a little time with my wife while we're here."
We'd arrived in Cannes late the night before and had slept in that morning. After a light breakfast, I'd hurried out to make the photo-call, leaving Bella to relax in our suite.
"I thought I'd at least ask." Jasper sounded as tired as I felt, "There are a lot of people wanting to meet with you, but I can put them off until you're in L.A. for the premiere."
I rubbed a hand over my face as I thought about how hectic the week of Enemy Combatant's premiere was going to be.
"Sounds like a plan," I sighed and glanced out the car window as I ended the call.
The driver took a right onto the Rue de la… whatever the fuck…
"Jesus," I muttered, spying a large crowd in our way; spectators and paparazzi lined up five rows deep.
It was absolute chaos.
Thankfully, Sidney had assistance getting me through, as the police and security personnel forced the wall of bodies back, clearing a path.
Questions were shouted, but I didn't even spare the paps a passing glance as I was whisked past them.
After saying my hellos to Clint and the other cast members, we waited as one of the official festival personnel spoke to the press, reminding them that the photo-taking would be limited to ten minutes only. After that, the photographers and reporters were expected to behave like civilized ladies and gentlemen during the question and answer session.
Yeah, right
As soon as the official stepped to the side, the crowd erupted. There was shouting, some of it angry as the photographers volleyed for the best vantage points, not shy in the least about pushing or crawling over one another to get what they wanted.
The official made an unsuccessful attempt to reign in the hysteria, as what was supposed to be ten minutes for photos, extended to about twenty before the atmosphere calmed enough to continue with the press conference.
The questions were predictable, and I found myself zoning out as I stood beside Clint, thinking about the evening ahead.
I couldn't wait to walk the red carpet with Bella on my arm.
I wonder what she'll be wearing?
Chris and Alice had sent over a dress for her, but had forbidden me to peek.
Hopefully it's something sexy like the one she wore to the Oscars…
No, no, no, that wouldn't be appropriate.
Would it?
I mean, she has a prominent baby bump now…
And I'll be damned if I'll allow any of those horny motherfuckers to leer at my pregnant wife…
I was pulled from my daydreams by a question, "Monsieur Masen, can you tell us why you chose this role, and also what was the inspiration, if any, for your portrayal?"
Well… that was easy.
I grinned, "There were two reasons that I wanted to do this film. The first was the character. In the book he is so well written. Frequently, when a film has a lot of action scenes, the personalities of the characters can get lost, quite often coming across as two dimensional to the viewer. This character had so many layers and was so intriguing, that when Clint explained his vision for bringing the book to life, I knew I had to be a part of it." I paused, "so yes, I was inspired by the character from the book, but I'll admit that there may be a hint of Harry Callahan in his demeanor as well."
At my response, Clint laughed loudly and the audience applauded.
"You can probably guess my other reason for wanting to do this." I placed my hand on my chest as I continued, "I could not pass up the chance to work with this man," I gave a head nod in Clint's direction. "He is a complete professional, while also being an absolute joy to work with. Being a part of this film has been one of the best experiences of my career. I will always be grateful that I was given this opportunity."
After the press conference, we attended a luncheon being held for the cast. I endured it with a smile, when all I really wanted was to return to our suite and spend the afternoon with my wife.
As soon as I could make my escape without seeming impolite, Sidney and I left. The film festival was in full swing, the streets even more crowded than they'd been that morning.
Back at my hotel, Sidney saw me to the door of my suite. I realized then that I was arriving much earlier than I'd told Bella to expect me so, just in case she was resting; I entered as quietly as I could.
After doing a quick scan of the empty sitting room, I took a few steps forward and glanced toward the bedroom, expecting to find Bella lying down.
Movement from the left had me turning my head in that direction, and there I beheld a vision that had me silently thanking the genius who decided that the bathrooms in these suites should be equipped with glass walls.
Of course there were long curtains which could be closed for privacy but, ideally, the see-through walls enabled one to sit in the raised tub and look past the sitting room through another wall of glass, to the breathtaking view of the blue waters of the Mediterranean beyond.
The movement that had caught my eye had been my lovely wife's glorious naked back, and backside, as she'd stepped into the raised tub.
God bless architects or interior designers or who-the-fuck ever… just… yeah… God bless them…
Like a moth to a flame, I was drawn closer until I found myself standing in the doorway, not able to take my eyes from the exquisite vision before me. By this time, she had eased down into the water and relaxed back against the side of the tub; her eyes closed, and a serene smile gracing her beautiful face.
As usual, the anxious expectant father in me wouldn't allow me to merely relax and enjoy the moment.
Of course not
Instead, my mind filled with worry.
Did Bella test the temperature of the water like I always do; making sure it's not too warm?
I scanned the room, noticing a small amount of water had splattered on the floor.
Shit… good thing I'm here early. Suppose she stepped out and slipped in that?
What the hell was she thinking, being so careless…?
Why would she take a bath while there's no one here to help her?
My sharp intake of breath at the thought of her falling to the floor was probably what alerted her to my presence.
"Ahhh!" She screamed as she lurched upright and cupped the front of her neck with her hand.
Well…that was unexpected…
She startled the shit out of me.
Obviously because I'd done the same to her…
"Oh my God, Edward! What the hell?" She was actually panting as she tried to catch her breath.
I felt like an asshole as I rushed toward her, coming to rest on my knees beside the tub.
"Baby, I'm so sorry; I wanted to surprise you by getting back early. I never intended to frighten you."
Bella took a deep breath. "Next time, say something. Don't lurk in the doorway like a creeper!"
Even though I still felt like an asshole for scaring her, I cracked a smile at her description.
As we stared into each other's' eyes, my hands on her shoulders, I felt the tension begin to ease from her body. It didn't take long for the guilt and anxiety I was feeling to melt away, replaced by other feelings…
The side effect of being this close to a naked Bella…
After another deep breath, Bella's lips turned up in a smile. "You're here." She whispered her frightened expression now replaced by one of complete adoration.
God… will I ever be worthy of the way she looks at me?
I nodded and leaned forward until my lips brushed against hers. "I am."
She leaned back slightly and quirked an eyebrow, "Well, what are you waiting for? Get in here." She commanded.
I love it when she's bossy
Without any conscious direction from me, my hands began to undo the buttons on my shirt.
Mere seconds later, my clothing was tossed in a heap on the floor.
Lingering kisses and caresses led to a memorable round of tub sex, with Bella straddling my lap until we both found our release.
"Oh baby," I breathed against her cheek as I held her against me, always mindful not to press too hard against her stomach. "I love you so much."
"I love you too."
Minutes passed as we lay against one another; Bella's head nestled into my shoulder. Suddenly, Bella pushed away from me, sitting up straight. "Oh my gosh! What time is it?"
I shrugged, having no idea, and not caring in the slightest.
She stood abruptly and I grabbed at her hips to steady her. I leaned forward, not able to resist kissing the growing baby bump before me.
"Alice is sending people here to do my hair and makeup." The words rushed out as I helped her exit the tub. She grabbed her phone from the counter. "Crap, they'll be here in ten minutes!"
I watched in amusement as she flitted into the bedroom, and pulled on a pair of panties, "This is your fault," she barked while looping her arms into a bra.
"How so?" I asked, enjoying the show.
"You're too damned sexy. I got distracted and I should have been getting ready."
I chuckled and looked away from her as I began to towel off.
It was funny. She'd only been a part of my life for about eighteen months, but I knew my Bella as well as I knew myself. At that very moment, without a glance in her direction, I would be willing to bet that my distracted wife had ceased all movement in order to ogle her naked husband. The need to be dressed for our visitors momentarily forgotten…
I turned my head to find her staring at me, slack jawed, while clutching a fuzzy white bathrobe to her chest.
I winked and chuckled before dropping the towel and stepping into a pair of boxer briefs. "Thought you were in a hurry, baby," I teased.
Bella clicked her tongue. "Damnit, Edward." She scowled, "Stop it."
"Stop what, Bella?" I asked innocently.
"I've already got pregnancy brain, and you're just too hot for your own good. It's a wonder we ever arrive anywhere on time." She muttered.
I barked out a laugh and crossed the room until I could pull her close. I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers in a lingering kiss.
"I missed you today," she breathed against my lips.
"I missed you too, baby." I kissed her nose and then pulled away, although not before reaching around in order to lightly swat her behind. "Now, get ready."
She giggled and I helped her into the robe.
***L&EL***
"Edward, after you complete A Tale of Two Cities, what's your next project?" The reporter asked cheerfully.
Bella and I were walking the red carpet for the Cannes showing of Enemy Combatant.
I turned to smile at my gorgeous wife, positively glowing in the sexy blue gown my sister had chosen.
Sexy, but not too sexy…
"Well, obviously my next project," as I spoke I placed a hand on Bella's protruding stomach, "will be my most important role to date: that of daddy to this little one."
Bella's lip began to tremble at my words. She bit it no doubt in an attempt to keep the tears from starting. I leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Don't cry, baby." I whispered.
A collective 'aww' sounded from those standing close by.
Jesus, the old Edward would have cringed at the thought of so completely letting my guard down in public...
I shrugged that thought away as the reporters, obviously using my response as an opening, immediately began firing questions at my flustered wife. "Bella, how are you feeling?" "Do you know if you're having a boy or a girl?" "Are you leaving Europe before Edward?"
My wife smiled nervously. "I feel fine."
I took her hand in mine and began to lead her away, not wanting to indulge them a moment longer with information that was none of their business.
***L&EL***
We found Chris, Alice and Jasper waiting for us inside the theater. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end when I heard Bella let out a small squeal of happy surprise seeing that Shane was seated with our group.
oops. I suppose I forgot to mention that he would be attending...
Logically, I knew there was no reason for it, but a small part of me was still a little jealous of Bella's friendship with Shane.
As the author, he has every right to be here, I shouldn't be such a dick, wishing he'd stayed home...
Fuck it. My inner caveman is alive and well, and I'm not apologizing.
It is what it is.
The screening went as expected, the only hiccup being that I'd forgotten, despite being instructed to do so, to give Alice and Bella a head's up when Emmett's scene was imminent.
Thankfully, his face graced the screen a full minute before his 'derriere' would appear. I turned to Bella and mouthed a sincere 'sorry'.
The look of horror which crossed her face was classic. Before I had time to blink, Bella was sliding from her seat onto the floor, one hand covering her eyes, and the other pulling Alice down with her.
Who knew the thought of seeing Emmett's naked ass could panic two grown, seemingly sane, women to this extent?
Well, I suppose I should be grateful that they didn't scream.
I caught Jasper's amused expression, his thoughts most likely mirroring my own.
Once Emmett's scene was over, I helped my wife, and her ever expanding belly, back into her seat.
***L&EL***
"Are you sure?" Bella asked again, her sad expression tugging at my heart. "I feel like I'm abandoning you."
"Baby, stop feeling guilty. If I could, I'd return to the hotel with you." I tried to assure Bella that by not attending the after-party, she was in no way abandoning me. Truth was, although I couldn't tell her without causing an emotional meltdown, she looked tired.
Traipsing all over Europe hadn't been easy on her.
As I helped her into the car, I repeated in a whisper the promise I'd made, "Soon, baby. We will be going home soon."
Maybe the exhaustion had gotten to me as well. Either that or my inherent pessimism was vying for control of my rational mind. Whatever the reason, I felt something shift at that moment and, try as I might in the days ahead, I couldn't shake the sense of foreboding that took hold. I drew in a deep breath as I watched the car carrying my wife and sister away, fade into the distance...
