Chapter 10
D continually checked the area for any signs of trouble as Doris slept. Dan's passing saddened him and his heart ached. His parasite friend was not helping anything.
"You know you have to leave her all alone. You can't stay."
"Go away."
Taking the hint and shutting up the parasite went away. He knew already. He didn't like the idea but he had no choice. It would not work out. He had a lifestyle and a job to do. He couldn't change that. He had less than 24 hours until he had to face Dracula.
Heading back to the house he went upstairs to check on Doris. She laid there awake and crying. Not sure what to do he walked in. Seeing him she tried to smile. She couldn't muster a smile.
"Hi."
"Hi"
"Thank you for helping me"
"You're welcome."
Neither said anything. Doris felt so lost and alone. She knew D wasn't used to emotions or comforting.
"D, this is a lot to ask you but could you lay here with me? I feel so alone."
D hesitated. The scent of her blood being so close would be so hard to resist. He wasn't any good at comforting.
Deciding he would try and resist the scent and thirst he walked to her. Lying down beside her he put his arm around her. It was an odd feeling and he felt out of his league. She laid her head on his chest and began to cry. He could only hold her as she cried.
"I failed him. He died. I could not keep him alive."
D wasn't sure how to respond.
"You did the best you could. It was his time."
She looked up at him.
"You really think so?"
Nodding, D continued to hold her. She felt silly crying on him but his comfort helped more than he knew. She didn't feel so alone. Even if he was going to leave her again she wasn't alone for now.
"Thank you, D."
She felt herself drifting off to sleep. He heard her shallow breathing and knew she fell asleep. Letting himself relax he drifted off to sleep. He shouldn't allow himself to get this close but he would just this one time. He was always alone. He hated to admit it but he was glad he could help her. With her he didn't feel so alone. Even if he couldn't be with her forever he could give her this time and comfort.
