I laid under my console. I was finishing up the wiring on the new chip set Id found that should do the trick. As I finished the last wire I heard someone clear their throat. I went to sit up, hitting my head on the bottom of the console. I cussed under my breath. I sat up carefully this time.
"Guess we are even now" Tali said smiling as I rubbed my head.
"Tali" I greeted with a nod.
"Have you gotten your console to work yet?" She asked, I smiled.
"Actually I just finished wiring in a new chip set for the power controls" I said climbing to my feet as I powered the console on and I laughed
"Your timing actually couldn't be any better" I said as I showed her the coding window that I'd been trying for forever to gain access to.
"Yeah it seems to have locked me out of any thing to do with the cores power use, it's like it's not even hooked up." She said watching me reconfigure some of the coding.
"Have you tried to route power through a chip set to reconfigure it like I did here?"
"No but now I need to go to the city to get one, Ill see if James and Cortez are busy", Tali said before wondering off.
I had a few breakthroughs in recoding the guns using an old piece of code. Just then the gun powered up for the first time since we landed. I couldn't do much more until Tali got the drive core operational to give me full access to the main defense network.
I felt kind of, excited, the lack of head way was really starting to wear on me.
Just then Liara came in. She was pacing back and forth, something was on her mind.
"Liara, what can I do for you"
And before all the words had left my mouth she started talking.
" I just found out that the protheans had the knowledge of dark energy and how to use it for a power source. Its incredible they actually combined it with mass effect technology to create ship based micro relays"
I know the my look of confusion is all that made her pause and sigh.
"The technology exists that we could get home by changing the drive core. It then can create it's own relay to get us home."
"You have got to be kidding me" I said in disbelief. I mean the thought of going home was nice but knowing going home was a reality...It was incredible. Though going home without Shepard wouldn't be the same. However getting everyone home and off this planet would be a huge win.
"Well how do we do it?"
"We got to find the research flight base just outside the city, the codes are all here in this work log I found in the building we went through that first day. We have to go back and find the rest of this scientists logs to find out where this base is exactly.
"Well, bright and early tomorrow morning me you, James and Cortez we will get in there and see what we can find."
And just as Liara left, Joker came in. I sighed and rubbed my browplates.
"What can I do for you" I asked but Joker was quiet for a long moment.
"I just need someone sane to talk to"
"Yeah but the comms work fine, you didn't come all the way down here through the ducts to just..." I pointed out
"Well, I'm just... Fine, I'm hiding from EDI"
"Hiding from her? Why?" I wondered.
"I... Might of made a, not serious comment about her weight and she kinda lost it"
"Joker, you should know better" I said in disbelief.
"I know, I know, but it was just a joke..."
I shook my head amused a little.
"No matter the race, type or kind... She's still a female, that's just one thing you don't joke about... You have got to apologize. She's having a hard enough time adjusting..." I said
"Yeah, you are right, but can I just hide down here for awhile until she cools down at least" I sighed and nodded.
Talk about high traffic through here. Usually it was so quiet down here but definitely not today.
After Joker sulked off to apologise to EDI, I tried to get back to work but that's about when the alarm on my omni tool beeped. I had to go watch over the shift change.
I was perched on the thruster again. I sat watching the perimeter as they went to let the next shift know it was time to go. So in the meantime it was just me.
It was rare for anything to happen but it was better to be safe than sorry. It was nice though as, today had been so busy it would be nice to have 20 minutes to myself.
Just then a streak of black mass blind sided me. Claws scraped against my armor as we both went violently rolling down the row of thrusters. It snapped at me as well rolled. Teeth just inches from my face. Luckily centrifugal force kept any acid off as I hit the ground we both lost our wind as it just got knocked out of us. I used this moment to gain the upper hand. As I tried to roll him over and get him with my leg spur. His rear leg clawed down my leg. He reared back to get leverage and in that second, that instant let off of pressure. I flipped out my Omni blade and punched it deep into the side of it's chest. It fell to the side of me and still tried to bite me even as the light in it's eyes faded and soon were glazed over.
I panted but smiled, I'd come out unharmed mostly. My armor had some deep gouges in it now but, just another story to tell.
A few of the crew came running out guns drawn and no armor on, they had obviously heard the commotion. One guy didn't even have shoes.
"I'm fine, go finish getting suited up" I said
This creature was over twice the size of the one that attacked Vega. Liara came out to look at it.
"I'm thinking this is the mate to the female we killed in town. As it's odd it would target you specifically, otherwise it would of just picked off a lone guard. I mean why else wait till you were alone."
"That's all well and good Liara but a killer beast with a vendetta isn't comforting"
"It should be, it's dead now" she pointed out.
"And what if it has a pack or something, cause if they are smart enough to track and try killing something that killed one of theirs... We need to get off this rock"
"That might be wise" she said looking back at the massive creature Id just killed with my Omni blade.
