Chapter 10: No Hope

(Frank is 6. Joe is 5)

Everyone had given up. They said they were doing all they could. They said it was too late. They said the boys were probably dead. They said they were searching for bones at this point. They said there no hope. Fenton Hardy refused to believe any of it. Deep down he knew his boys were alive, he could feel it. He would not give up until they were safe in his arms. It had been almost three years since that dreaded day. In that time, Fenton had made quite a name for himself as a famous private investigator. He'd solved several cases in the hopes that one of them would lead him to his boys. So far, none of them did. He started out looking into child abductions in the state, then he broadened his search nationwide. He had made calls to other grieving parents, and had managed to find several of the abducted children. Some were used as slaves, and others were being sold to sex traffickers. Fenton hoped and prayed that his children were not being forced into that revolting business. The thought of Frank and Joe going through something like that caused him to gag. He quickly pushed the thought from his mind and pictured his wife.

Laura had finally started to move on, she was eating, went out for drinks with her friends, and she was getting enough sleep. Although it had felt like a part of her soul was being shredded, her and Fenton had tried for another baby, but it wasn't meant to be. She, like Fenton, refused to believe her boys were gone and she was playing her part in helping the investigation. Everyday she'd look through the newspaper for any missing child story, if she found one she would call the parents and find out the details of what happened. Every week she would call a different police station in each state and ask if there were any updates on the "Hardy Case." Each time she got the same answer "It's been too long, Mrs. Hardy" or "Mrs. Hardy, we're sorry for you're loss." Laura Hardy wouldn't give up that easily. Her boys would be found, one way or another.

Whenever Mrs. Morton and her kids walked by, Laura felt a wave of sadness wash over her. It was hard to imagine that she'd never be able to play with her own children at the park. She tried to put on a happy facade, but she could tell Beth saw right through it. Suddenly, she realized that even though her babies weren't with her, she should be happy for other people and they're children. Don't be selfish. She would tell herself but still longed for closure.

Beth Morton took Chet and Iola to the park every day at precisely two in the afternoon. Each day she passed the Hardy residence she could feel the eyes of Laura watching her from between the living room curtains. Every day she waved, and occasionally asked Laura if she wanted to come with them, but she was always turned down. Until yesterday. Yesterday Laura had said she'd love to come. Beth could never understand what her friend was going through, but she could try to help her move on. That day, she, Laura and the kids walked around the park, and went to get ice cream afterwards. Beth was confident that Laura was ready to stop grieving. She smiled to herself. Maybe this could be a daily routine.

Since that grim day in July, Gertrude had moved in with her brother and sister- in -law on Elm Street. She felt the need to nurture them back to health and happiness. She was there for Laura and Fenton when they needed her, and distant when they needed time alone. She bought them groceries, and cleaned the house. Most of all she gave them time. Gertrude knew that it took a long time to heal broken hearts. She honestly didn't believe the boys were still alive, but she was willing to help Fenton and Laura search anyway. As she predicted, nothing had been uncovered. She just hoped that the boys didn't have to suffer for long.

Thanks for reading! Yes I know that police investigators wouldn't say that it's a lost cause, and I know that this was kinda boring. I'll call it a fluff chapter. But I thought it was necessary. Please review:)

Oh, and I need some CREATIVE ways to abuse Frank and Joe. So give me ideas on that. And what are child restraints and how are they used? Is it like rope? Have a good day. Until next time.
