Chapter 10: Roomies

Finally they got off the plane. Everyone was exuberant. Most of the seniors had never been out of the state. They had barely been out of the city. Caroline directed them all out of the airport and into a bus waiting for them. Klaus tried to sit next to her on the bus, but Bonnie skillfully snatched the seat up first.

"Okay everyone! We are so close to getting on the boat for the cruise!" Caroline announced. This was followed by loud whooping sounds and laughter.

"Yeah, yeah, I know you're all excited, but make sure that you have read the safety protocols I provided you with!" Of course, this was followed by loud groaning sounds and mumbling.

"I know, I know, safety is the last thing you want to think about right now, but we are going to be on a huge boat off the coast of the South American continent. It's important that you know what you are dealing with. We don't want any accidents or men overboard! Okay? Cool."

...

The cruise ship was ginormous. The seniors of Mystic Falls High had never seen anything like it before in their lives. Of course, Klaus, Stefan, and Rebekah all just kind of yawned at it, the rest of the gang was speechless.

"That's one big boat..." Matt commented.

"No kidding," Bonnie replied.

"I'm so excited! Good job, Care," Elena said, side-hugging Caroline.

"Thanks!" Caroline was beaming.

This is exactly what they all needed-a break, a vacation, an experience. This was something they would never forget. It would broaden all of their horizons, and make them all a little less small-town. She whistled as loud as she could, trying to gather the seniors. Caroline then remembered the clipboard of who was chaperoning which group. She hadn't even bothered to check...even after she had found out Klaus was coming on the trip as a chaperone.

Immediately, she panicked.

She flipped through the papers, looking for the assignments April had made. Her stomach dropped. She should have never taken April's vervain bracelet away. It had allowed someone to compel her, and that someone seemed to have it out to ruin her entire vacation.

Caroline faked a smile, trying to hide how affected she was, so he wouldn't get the pleasure out of her rise.

"Alright, everyone, listen up for your chaperone assignments! Some of you will room with them! You must stay near your chaperones at all times and check in with them periodically! Let's be safe, people! Don't ruin senior trip for this class or the next one! Okay?"

She began to read off the assignments. The senior class consisted of less than two hundred kids, and only a third of them had been able to come on the trip. Most of them had struggled with financing it. They were split up in groups of about seven seniors each. Caroline read through each chaperone assignment with her fake smile plastered on her face.

"And the students assigned to Niklaus Mikaelson include: Rebekah Mikaelson, Matt Donovan, Bonnie Bennett, Elena Gilbert, Stefan Salvatore, and Caroline Forbes."

She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Klaus's eyes danced with mirth as he grinned at her from the sea of faces. She wanted to stick her tongue out at him, but that would not be appropriate behavior for the reigning Miss Mystic Falls.

She read on, "Stefan and Matt will room together. Rebekah, Bonnie, and Elena will be rooming together. And Klaus is rooming with..."

She paused. Her face was bright red like a fire engine. She glared at him as he snickered. Caroline ran her hand through her hair to regain her composure as she flashed her classmates one of her cheesiest grins ever.

"Nevermind, everyone board the ship! But behave yourselves!" she warned, still smiling.

She sighed, and when she glanced up, he was peering down at her. He wore a smug smirk on his face.

"Looks like we're roomies," he winked.

She glared at him, "You wish."

He raised an eyebrow as if to suggest that he did in fact wish that, and she rolled her eyes in response.

"No, we are not," she accentuated every word, sternly. "I am rooming with the girls. You can room with Stefan and Matt."

"That's not what the paper says, though, now does it, sweetheart?" his eyes lit up playfully.

She shook her head at his audacity, "No it's not. Because you compelled April to put that down!"

Caroline was fuming. Who did he think he was? He was ruining her vacation. The one she had worked tirelessly on! The one that she deserved to have! She needed this! How could he do this to her? How could he follow her to South America? It was cruel in the cruelest of fashions. There was no purpose behind his decision other than pestering her.

She took a deep breath. Her eyes were ablaze with fury.

She spit out, "I don't care what the freaking paper says! We are not sharing a room! And you know what? You are just pathetic! You followed me on my senior trip just to annoy the hell out of me? Don't you have something better to do?"

Klaus could stand a mild amount of teasing from her. In fact, he quite enjoyed their playful banter. He enjoyed the way her eyes shone, even if it was with anger. But she was crossing the line.

"You are trying my patience, sweetheart," he growled. "You better get on the boat before I do something I probably won't regret."

Caroline huffed, and made a face like she couldn't believe him. She hurriedly walked by him, trying to catch up with Elena and Bonnie.

Klaus grabbed her arm, "And Caroline?"

She spun around to face him, and he almost lost his train of thought. Caroline was so gorgeous when she was this furious. He wanted to smooth out the crinkle between her eyebrows. He wanted to make a joke, so he could see those beautiful pearly whites gleaming again.

Klaus's stare was penetrating. His eyes brooded into her soul. It was like he could stab the sharpest of daggers into your gut just with one look. His lips turned up into a harsh, devious smile. His gaze was cold and heartless. Caroline felt like she didn't know him anymore.

"The world does not revolve around you, love. I came on this trip to watch over my sister, Rebekah. Toying with you is just an added bonus. But you would do well to watch the way you address me, sweetheart. I can get rather nasty at times."

He grinned as he finished off his warning. There was no happiness in it. Caroline's face let on how fearful she was. He has scared her. A part of him reveled in it; he had worried that he had lost his touch. A different more secluded part of him was unsettled by her fear. He shook off that feeling.

Caroline was frozen for a moment, staring into the original hybrid's brutal gaze. She had a terrible habit of forgetting just who she was talking to-who he was, what he was capable of. Sometimes her bravery reached beyond its reasonable limits. She needed to watch herself a bit more closely.

Caroline gulped, nodded, and turned away. She walked quickly to catch up with Elena and Bonnie as they boarded the cruise ship.

"What was that about?" Bonnie wondered.

Her two friends looked back at Klaus, who was staring at the back of the blonde's beautiful head.

"Nothing. Just a...misunderstanding," Caroline tried to reassure them. She refused to look back at him; she was still trembling.

Elena wasn't convinced, "That didn't look like nothing, Care. Are you sure you're alright?"

"I'm fine, you guys," she assured them, trying for a smile to support her case. "I'm not going to let him phase me. It's a Girls' Trip, remember?"

That made her two friends smile a bit, but it didn't reach either of their eyes. They stared out at the view. It was truly beautiful here. They had never experienced anything like it. Caroline realized that she and Elena had all of eternity to travel the world and experience everything. They would be able to see thousands of gorgeous views like this. Bonnie was magical life confined by human years. It saddened Caroline to think of losing one of her best friends. All three of them had a limited amount of time to spend together. All of the sudden, time seemed to constrain Caroline for the first time since she had turned. She had prepared herself for losing her mother. But Bonnie? The thought hadn't even crossed her mind.

"So what's up with rooming with Rebekah?" Bonnie tried to change the topic by joking.

"I know," Elena giggled. "It's kind of awkward seeing as she's the one who killed me and all."

The three best friends burst out in laughter. It wasn't funny, really. But they had to laugh to keep going.

"I know, I know," Caroline responded as their laughter faded. "I had no idea...April set it all up."

"Oh, well she's a sweet girl. She probably had no idea what she was doing," Elena conceded.

"Oh I'm sure she didn't," Caroline snorted, and her tone told her friends something was up.

"What do you mean?" asked Bonnie.

"Klaus compelled her. He compelled his way onto this trip. He compelled her regarding the group and room assignments," Caroline was disgusted.

Something caught her eye towards her left. She glanced over. He was staring at her with those bright blue eyes. She immediately lost her anger.

"What?" Elena gasped. "No! She has to stay out of this..."

"I thought she had vervain?" Bonnie searched their faces quizzically.

"She did," Caroline confessed. "I had to-er-remove it...after an incident..."

Bonnie narrowed her eyes. With the way her jaw was set, Caroline knew she was in for another lecture. She really didn't feel like a confrontation right now, though.

"But why did he want to be on this trip anyways?" Elena wondered, trying to avoid the confrontation as much as Caroline was.

Bonnie could be exceptionally judge-y at times.

"He said it was to watch out for his sister," Caroline snorted, rolling her eyes.

"Playing the overprotective brother card. I don't buy it for a second," Bonnie rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, we all know why he's really here," Elena giggled, wagging her eyebrows at Caroline.

Caroline bit her lip, and rolled her eyes. She couldn't help but laugh, though.

"Oh my gosh, Elena! No-just no!"

Bonnie and Elena giggled some more. Caroline just continued shaking her head and stifling back laughs.

Finally she said, "It's not my fault that I have a thousand year old Original hybrid stalking me, okay?"

This brought on another round of giggles.

"I know, I'm sorry Care, but it's just-I mean it's so repulsive and so obviously never going to happen that I don't know it's just...comical."

"Oh, gee thanks Elena laugh at my expense while I have to fend off the affections of the most dangerous being in the history of the world...what a great friend!"

They were all cracking up now. Bonnie's laughter came a quick end. Her smile faded.

"Guys, you shouldn't be laughing about this..." Bonnie said.

There was something in her tone that worried Caroline, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it, so instead she just ignored it.

"Bonnie's right," Elena said, trying to stifle her laughter. "It's really not funny, Care."

An eruption of giggles spurted from Caroline and Elena.

"Guys," Bonnie warned. "Guys."

Finally, her friends looked over their shoulders at what Bonnie was referring to. Their giggles ceased. Their grins fell. They were frozen.

"Oh no, please don't stop laughing at my brother's expense on my account," Rebekah smirked. "Making fun of him is one my favorite hobbies. It's really between that and killing insignificant girls who vex me."

THIS IS ABOUT TO BE A LONG, AND IMPORTANT AUTHOR'S NOTE:

Okay so I know that some of you feel like this story needs to be more about Caroline and Klaus. The thing is...they are all on this trip. And the story involves them all. Klaroline has never been about just them. If it was, it would have happened ages ago. It is about Caroline's friends, Tyler, and Klaus's family too. It affects them all.

I promise that this story will reach the point where Caroline and Klaus are together and completely isolated from the world. But I do not promise that I will ever stop writing about the rest of the characters... I mean, in the future, yes, more chapters will be devoted solely to the two of them.

I guess I am just defending why I write about other characters. If you guys feel it is really unnecessary let me know. I was thinking of developing Bonnie with someone and Elena maybe with someone...although now I am not sure I want to dive into that. Rebekah might develop a relationship with someone. I don't know...

I mean if you don't want anything else I won't make it happen.

Also, I know it has taken a LONG time to get to the ship. And it might take a while to get to the island too. But not too long, I promise. Because I don't want to do that much research.

Please be patient, and know that the best is coming. Think of it as suspense. If I just got right down too it, it'd be like missing out on foreplay... (insert awkward simile here;))

Okay so hope you like it. Keep reviewing! If you stop, I won't know to continue! I only got nine for chapter nine. I'd like ten for this one(:
