Chapter 7
It was dark in Death world. There was no light to be shown. All of the light came from Death's Castle, which was completely made of light in itself. That was the true sign that he was indeed gone.
Finn walked ahead of them all, not only because he was their leader, but he didn't want them to see him falter. Being a creator, in dark places, he was the main source of light in this darkness. Rebecca had followed closely behind him. Being in the familiar terrain…
Finn shook as he felt Death's phantom hand on his shoulder. He remembered the torture. The roughness. The ice cold feeling of Death's hands on his body. He loved a good soul to torture.
He held himself together with both hands as he stood, right in the center of where the castle was. The underworld was massive. It was designed to spaciously hold all of the universe's lives until the end of time. This is where it all happened. He withheld his urge to heave. A flaming ball built within his stomach. He wished Marceline was here to comfort him.
He regretted that wish.
"My lord?" Rebecca said from beside him. "Is anything the matter?"
"No," Finn said before continuing to walk.
Rebecca nodded and continued behind him. The portal wasn't so far away from here.
After silence, the only noise being the grunts, the shivers, the cries, and the march on the cold sand, Finn turned his head to Rebecca. "Did I do the right thing?"
"You speak of Marceline?" Rebecca turned to him.
"Yeah." He said.
"You, my lord, are the Lord Creator. You lead us all. You're the one who chooses what's wrong and what's right."
"Can you stop being cryptic for one moment, please?"
"I'm not," she insisted. "No matter what your decisions are, we as the people must follow you. And those who follow you trust your decisions. In other words, my Lord, it's not up to us to determine whether you did the right thing or not. The real question is: do you think you did the right thing?"
He stayed silent for a moment. "Thank you, Rebecca."
She nodded.
Marshall Lee Abadeer need not wear armor for protection. His transformation is enough armor for him. When he is enlarging, the armor would only hinder him, and therefore could cause him to die. Fionna and Nathaly Abadeer wore armor to protect themselves. Nathaly was young. Sixteen years old. And she possessed similar skills to Marshall, like the ability to change her form. She hasn't yet mastered the ability, and she had only been flying for about a year. She needed the armor.
Not only did she possess her father's speed, she possessed her mother's strength and will as well. And her fearlessness. But even that wasn't enough to quell the fear in their hearts.
Nathaly looked over to the young boy who inherited the Ice Kingdom after Simon and Betty. Though the boy, Aerys, looked very mad, he sent a sweet smile her way. Nathaly smiled in return, but frowned when she knew that this may be the last time she will ever see him.
They had been meeting in private for the past year. Marshall would have been unsure about it and Fionna would have angrily disagreed. She had a long standing rivalry with the Ice Kingdom, but was willing to set it aside for Marshall.
When Aerys, white of hair, and white of pupil, saw her smile fade, he frowned again and looked forward. Something began to form in his hands. A rose of ice.
"Mommy?" Nathaly asked and looked up at her mother. Her mother was only a few inches taller than she was. "Are we going to live?"
Fionna smiled down at her. Her expressions were easier to read than Marshall's because he hid his emotions for thousands of years. "Of course," she said and kissed her daughter's forehead. "Of course we'll live."
Her smile was crooked. She was lying.
"We'll do just fine," Marshall said as he flew over to them with his hands behind his head, acting casual.
Typical Marshall, hiding his true feelings. It was like whatever he didn't express would have been expressed in his guitar playing. If he were afraid, he wouldn't even be able to play guitar at all.
Nathaly herself was in no way calm. She was shaking. She had only been in a few small fights. Never battles. Fionna and Marshall had seen their fair share of blood. Fionna had been through battles against the Fire and Ice Kingdoms, and the undead, and Marshall had been through the Mushroom war. They all had been through hell.
But never Nathaly. Her hell was just about to begin.
Danny of the Bravest Warriors remained silent as they marched. Everyone was silent, and Danny knew Wallow was thinking of Catbug. Plum was stoic as always and Chris and Beth wouldn't spend a second apart, even if the world were ending. He was angry with Chris at the sign of his affection towards Beth. She was his! She was supposed to be his!
He gritted his teeth and clenched his hands. His fingernails dug deep.
"Be careful with Jealousy," Princess Bubblegum said from beside him. "It can be very destructive."
He scoffed. "What do you know about Jealousy?"
"More than you think."
Despite Danny's annoyance, they walked side by side.
"She was supposed to be mine," he said.
"No one belongs to anyone," the Princess replied.
"I did so much…" Suddenly, he remembered what he did. The pain that he caused. The lives that he ended, just to find the location of that key. The key that got them into this situation in the first place.
"That doesn't mean you'll get something in return."
"I did so much…" he repeated.
Bubblegum sighed. "Look, Danny. No one belongs to anyone. No matter how much you do for them, they will do what they think is right. It's all a part of being human… or in my case, conscious."
"It's just not fair…"
"A lot of things aren't fair," she said. "People are going to lose their families today. Many who done nothing to deserve death will die. The world is ending." She paused. "Of course things aren't fair. But you're not asking for a relationship, Danny. You're asking for ownership."
He let her words marinate for a minute. He did do so much for Beth. He felt like she was supposed to be his for it. The key was a means to an end. The key was supposed to help him secure Beth… but Beth is a person, not an object to be won.
He'll have to put his pride away and swallow the truth. Beth will never be his.
He looked down at the dust as they continued to walk. "The world is ending." He said. "And I'll be alone."
"You need to stop thinking like that," Bubblegum said. "The world is ending. So what? Are you gonna wallow in self pity?"
"Hey!" Wallow said.
"Or are you going to fight!?" Bubblegum continued. "The world is ending. But you can either fight with us or die with those who don't. But at least if you fight with us, you wont be alone."
Danny's spirits lifted. Like a warm light shined down on his heavy, dark soul for the first time in ages. He looked into her eyes, and smiled sincerely. "You know, Princess. You're not half bad."
She shot him a smile in return. A heartbroken smile, but still a sincere smile. "Tell you what. If we make it out of this alive, we can have dinner. That way, afterwards, you wont have to be alone."
He smiled. "Deal."
They stepped over a hill, and underneath was a cliff. At the very bottom, what they saw was like a see of ants crawling into a small white sphere. Finn turned to look into his army, a group of all the people in Ooo. Children, women, and men alike. Candy citizens, Fire people, Demons…
"Remember your positions," Finn said loudly enough for everyone to hear. "Remember what you stand to lose!"
Everyone stiffened.
Even young Nathaly was trembling. Fionna broke a sweat on her brow, and Marshall tried his hardest to maintain a cool exterior. Aerys, the Ice King, stared at the dead with a smirk, ready to strike them all down. Bonnibelle armed her bow and took a deep breath and was startled as Lady Rainicorn took her onto her back. Jake enlarged himself. Ember turned into a massive, and surprisingly controlled, giant flame. And all of the Bravest Warriors were primed for battle.
"Creators! Ready!"
They eached grabbed hold of the people in the prior group to theirs. They will drop them off and fight in the front lines. Finn grabbed hold of Peppermint Butler.
"Go!"
The Creators flew high, lifting the dirt from the ground. With everyone who could fly, they dropped everyone into position, and Finn took Peppermint Butler right to the core. Blood was already being spilt as the army of dead began to fight and claw their way. The Creators stood higher chances of living, and yet many couldn't stand the overwhelming numbers. Five billion against infinity. There was no chance. And there would be people who would die. Lots of them.
A few creators fell, and those who broke through would face the wrath of the armed citizens, demons, and the Bravest Warriors. But not even they could hold. Those who broke through it were like seeping water against sediment. They will break through eventually. Finn cut off another's head.
Where do the dead go when they die again?
Rebecca swiftly cut down twenty within a second. Jake and Ember were attacking and burning. Bonnibelle tried to defend the skies from enemies who could fly. The Bravest Warriors were even beginning to falter. And people on the inner perimeter were also dying. Blood littered the ground. It seemed like hours, but it so far had been thirty seconds. One billion had already fallen. Hunson Abadeer cannot be killed, but he was being too slowed.
Slowly, the mortality rate was increasing. Heads were falling off bodies as the dead fought back. A minute in, and already, two billion had died. The people were growing tired. Growing afraid. Many dropped their weapons out of fear. Many chose not to fight at all.
Finn fought in desperation, trying to keep their morale up. But it wasn't working. They were too outnumbered. It was hopeless. They would be dead by minute two. Still he fought.
He cut one down before moving onto the next. The creator beside him fell and he cut down the one who killed him. As he was about to cut down another Dead, a hot streak ran diagonally down his back. He screamed in pain as he turned around. The creator that had fallen had resurrected. At this rate, many would die if the creators fell. Creators were forces to be reckoned with, and with them on the enemy side, there was no chance.
Finn swiped his sword and decapitated the dead comrade before kicking his head away from the body.
There was no chance… They wouldn't survive two minutes against an infinite army. Finn was running out of energy. He had long forgotten how to summon his final form. He couldn't reach for it. But still he fought, swinging and kicking away bodies. It seemed to slow things down a bit.
He breathed heavily, and his muscles began to burn. His sword, while so light to him, became heavy. His hands were lower now than they once were, and every breath was a chore. Still, he swung as he heard his brethren killed and mutilated. The commonfolk have been breached. They didn't know how to fight, and they were dying. Kids. Mothers. Housewives.
And there was nothing Finn could do. It ate at him like acid in his heart. Why did all of them have to die because he was failing them? He was the one who sent them to their graves.
He couldn't move fast anymore. He dropped his sword. After all, with what he had done, how could he fight? If anything, he should be the one to die.
Two minutes. As predicted.
An undead Creator landed before Finn, and he looked up into its dead eyes. It raised it's sword and swung down…
A sword of light, held by a gray, decaying hand. A woman he swore he never saw before. Blonde hair, blue eyes. The garment of a Creator.
No… he was wrong… he had seen her before. In a vision. He saw her die.
And this is where she was. In the realm of the dead.
He had barely any time to process what was happening before she spoke. "Finn! Go!"
Some of the dead began to turn in on themselves. They were familiar faces. Amongst them were Simon and Betty Petrikov, protecting their son Aerys. Where Jake made his rounds, and was about to fall, Joshua and Margaret fought back. Some of the dead were allies.
Finn looked back at the woman. He grabbed the handle of his sword. "I'm not leaving you!" He said. "You saved me once, Mom. Now it's my turn."
He slashed at the army of undead beside his mother. She was getting hit, but not getting hurt. She was undead, after all.
With undead allies, they made it to three minutes. The portal exploded, sending a massive shockwave, blowing everyone back. Then the portal began to rapidly shrink. "Fall back!" Finn commanded. "Everyone into the portal now!"
And everyone ran as fast as they could, and flew as fast as they could. Naturally, everyone who could fly made it in first, while the civilians were struggling. The portal was pushing harder and harder, like a massive gust blowing in the opposite direction of where you walk. And it was shrinking.
The woman kept fighting. "Mom!" Finn yelled.
"Leave me!" she said as a sword stabbed into her gut, but she didn't falter. "I belong here!"
Finn paused. Throughout his life, he always wondered about his mother. What happened to her? Did she love him? Why did she leave him then? When he found out the truth, it nearly destroyed him. He was hoping his father would give him the love and support that he needed. No… he tried to destroy him. And that shattered everything.
But there were pieces that remained unbroken.
Finn's mother sacrificed herself to save Finn. She knew the consequence of her actions, and she took the risk anyway.
And he'd be damned if he wouldn't take the same risk for her.
He swung his sword and chopped off the head of her attacker before pulling the sword out of her stomach. Then she grabbed her and fled.
"Finn! What are you doing!?" She yelled. "Let me go at once!"
"No!" He said. "You're not leaving me again!"
The portal was getting smaller and smaller, nearing the size of a door now. Finn was meters away and closing. The ovalular shape was shrinking every second. Two meters! It was the size of a small circle! A meter left! He wont make it! He's dead!
Finn closed his eyes and flew straight ahead.
When he awoke, Finn saw an orange sky. His breath was visible in the air. When he stood, everyone was lying around in an open field. Right where they were supposed to be. He looked over to see who made it through. No more than three hundred. Five billion was what was here when they all entered. Three hundred remained. Men, women, and children, all lost.
He looked down by his feet. His mother had regained her color. Her skin was bright, just like his son's. He flew ahead of her and gathered what he could of the survivors. Marshall Lee Abadeer. Safe. Nathaly Hope Abadeer. Safe. Jake. Safe. Ember. Safe. Princess Bubblegum. Safe. Chris and Beth. All safe.
Lady Rainicorn was gone. Fionna was gone. Wallow and Plum were gone… He couldn't remember anyone else. His brain wasn't allowing it. He needed to rest. He would have to deal with Marceline's scolding later…
MARCELINE!
He flew fast towards the Candy Kingdom. He began to catch wind of a scent as he got closer.
Fire. Or ashes.
"MARCELINE!"
He stopped when he saw it. The horrible sight.
The Candy Kingdom was burned to the ground.
