Chapter 9

It was Saturday.

Emma had woken to the sound of her phones ringtone. With a small groan she rolled over and looked at her phone. Neal. She sat up and answered the phone.

"Hey" Emma said while in the middle of a yawn.

"Happy Birthday Emma!" Yelled a large group of kids from the other end of the phone.

Emma smiled to herself, her Boston family. "Thanks guys" Emma called happily, into the phone.

"Happy Birthday Em" A voice emma knew to well said.

"Thanks Neal" Emma said with a smile.

"So you're finally an official adult" He announced into the phone.

"Yeah, Apparently" Emma said as she pushed the blankets off herself. Though she always seemed to think of herself as an adult already it was a bit weird to think about it that way.

"So what are your plans for today?" He asked, with the sound of pattering feet in the background.

Him and Emma had been talking every night since she got to town. He knew everything that was happening and kept an update on how she was doing with Regina and the others. It made Emma feel better to be able to talk to someone about everything and it gave Neal peace of mind that she was okay for the time being.

"Well I'm pretty sure I am going to be having breakfast with Mary Margaret and David since I smell bacon from here, I might stop by Reginas house just to see what's going on and then later tonight I'm going to the bar, legally finally, with Ruby and a few friends." Emma said as she looked through her drawers for pajama pants that she hadn't been wearing.

"Sounds like fun, be carefully with Regina though " Neal commented happily.

"Yeah I know" Emma sighed

"So the bar with Ruby? Are they her friends?" He asked.

"Yeah... it's gonna be kinda weird because I'll be drinking with a bunch of older woman" Emma answered back as she put her phone on speaker and put her pajama pants on.

"I could see how that might be weird but who knows, it may be fun" Neal said no so sure of himself.

"I'm sure it will, I'll get to see a lot of the people I grew up with getting drunk, along with myself" Emma said with a small laugh. Neal chuckled with Emma with a small agreeing sound. "Hey Neal, I think I'm gonna go. I'm pretty sure I smell something burning" Emma said a bit worriedly as she opened up her door.

"Okay... Well happy birthday again, call me later, when your sober" Neal said with a chuckle as they both hungup at the same time.

Emma walked down the stairs as the fire detector began to go off.

"Damn stove!" Mary Margaret yelled out "Go open some windows and shut that fricken alarm off."

I tapped the button on the Fire detector shutting it off as she made her way down the stairs. The older couple froze and turned toward the blonde.

"Good Morning" Emma said stepping down the finally stair with a small smile and shy wave.

"Hey Emma! Happy birthday" Mary Margaret called out as she walked over and hugged me.

"Happy Birthday" David exclaimed as he opened a window in his and Mary Margaret's open room.

"Thanks" Emma said with a chuckle. "So what's happening down here?" She asked looking at them a bit confused.

"Well I was making breakfast" Mary Margaret said.

"We were making breakfast" David intorapted. "But it was her fault" He whined as if he were a five year old being blamed on.

"Yeah yeah" Mary Margaret said, rolling her eyes "Well WE were cooking and I left the bacon in the oven to make sure it doesn't get cold and it well... Caught on fire somehow. David jumped up in the air and ran away and I put it out and the smoke got all over"

Emma couldn't help but laugh. The two of them were crazy sometimes. David stood in the corner standing tall and proud as if he had just lost a part of what made him a man; which in Emma's eyes he did but that just made her laugh more. She could tell Mary Margaret was keeping herself from a complete break out of laughter.

"I love you guys" Emma laughed out as she sat down on a stool in front of the kitchen counter "Your both insane"

Mary Margaret smirked as David finally walked back into the kitchen, still standing stiff.

"So do we still have breakfast or did you two burn it all?" Emma teased with a smirk.

"Honestly I'd say we're better off going to Grannies" David said, clearing his throat out.

"Agreed" Mary Margaret Answered "Let's change and go"

Emma nodded her head and jumped off the stool, going back up the stairs. She threw on a sweater and leggings, slipped on her sneakers and walked back downstairs as she grabbed her purse and phone.

"Ready?" David asked the two ladies. They both nodded and headed out the door smiling.

The three shuffled out of the car and into the small restaurant, sliding into a small both in the corner.

"Hello birthday girl" Ruby said as she walked over to the booth "Or should I say birthday woman" She nudged Emma playfully.

"Thanks Ruby" Emma said with a polite smile.

"I'm guessing you'll all want your usual breakfast" She questioned, the three nodded while keeping a smile. The waitress was off, swaying over to the Chiefs window.

Going to Granny's was a popular thing in town, especially if you knew either Ruby or Granny. Each local knew what they want and how they want it was just up to Ruby if she wanted to remember them or not.

Of course the morning that they were there Regina walked in for her Saturday morning breakfast. The mayor walked into the restaurant as if she owned the place, like she always did. She didn't notice Emma and sat at a stool turning back to the booth. The new adult saw the mayor though and kept an eye on her as Mary Margaret talked on about her eighteenth birthday.

Mary Margaret wanted to entertain her daughter so she began to put a wild twist on her own eighteenth birthday. David had defiantly been confused though he did laugh when he understood a reference or two she had made purposely. The story wound up being that when she had turned eighteen she had gone on a wild chase to find her friend that had been really high that day and believed she was a wolf. Then at some point they made their way to a small tavern bar and got seven different men to buy them both drinks. It got laughs out of all three of them so it couldn't have been that bad of a story.

Emma finished her food as David and Mary Margaret weren't even half way through with their own meals. She glanced back over at the stools where a lonely lost in thought mayor sat eating her french toast.

"Hey um... Will you guys excuse me for a moment." Emma said sliding out of the booth as the couple nodded their heads. They shared worried glances though when their daughter made her way to the one person they didn't want her anywhere near.

Emma sat at the stool next to the woman she used to dearly call mom with the smallest smile on her face. "Cinnamon Apple french toast as always" Emma commented, making the women next to her jump.

"Oh Emma... You um startled me" Regina said holding her chest for a moment "What are you doing here?"

"Just having a quick birthday breakfast with Mary and David" Emma said leaning on to the counter.

Regina glanced back at the booth where the couple sat, noticeably watching them. "Aw I see" Regina said turning back to Emma "Happy Birthday swe- Emma" Ugh Emma, goddamnit.

Sweetie... Emma always loved hearing being called sweetie by Regina but hearing cut it off as if it were a mistake to say it made a part of her heart break. "Thanks" She said quietly, turning a little.

Damnit damnit damnit UGH. Regina cursed herself for letting herself slip. Just seeing Emma now brought back all the memories of the past it seemed like the woman she was looking at today was still the toddler she carried around. She kept back from patting Emma's back or holding her. It was so hard to see her like this.

"Um... Well, I was wondering if you wanted to have lunch with me..." Emma said quietly looking at Regina carefully.

Regina just shook her head, Nope nope nope. She couldn't do it she loved Emma but she wasn't ready for it.

"Well then how about a walk around town after you're done eating?" She questioned a bit more.

Regina sat up in her seat with a frown. "No" She said.

"Why?" Emma asked.

"Because I said so" Regina answered having a sip of her coffee.

"So you're just going to talk to me like I'm still your daughter but you can't even give me the time of day? I'm not some little kid anymore, I chose to come here, to be somewhere in a place I actually knew, not only that though but to actually see you again." Emma asked a bit louder.

Oh Emma if only it were that easy, than I'd have you back here in a heart beat. "Yeah well why did you want to see me?" She asked looking back up at Emma again.

"Cause I know you lied, in the past when you returned me like some broken toy and again when you told me the only reason you left me was because you were pregnant" Emma said, crossing her arms. She could feel the eyes of everyone on them by now and Mary Margaret's and Davids were burned into her.

"I didn't lie, it was the truth. Do you really still fantasize about that superpower of yours?" She said, rolling her eyes back. She felt the eyes as well but chose to just ignore it as she signaled granny for the check. She wanted out.

Emma knew that Regina had done nothing wrong at the moment and she was getting a bit loud but the woman wouldn't even let herself call the girl she raised sweetie. She saw Granny walking over with the check and Regina paid quickly and got up from her seat.

"I'll see you later, okay?" Regina Said but Emma followed her anyway.

"Would you stop being such a coward and just tell me why you hate me" Emma asked as she walked out of the shop with Regina. The older woman quickly turned around, so fast it made Emma jump.

"I don't hate you Emma, you should know that. I love you sweetie I really do but I just can't explain this all to you right now and I am not going to until the time is right. I'm sorry Emma. Have a good birthday" Regina said as she gave Emma a quick hug and ran off before she was able to follow.

Emma leaned against the wall with her hands in her pocket not fully understanding what she was told.

Sweetie…
