-summary: In the perfect world, both Sasuke and Naruto would've gotten their arms back. And Sakura knew that the world was far from perfect. Inspired by The Last movie character designs.
Sakura knew there was nothing harder in this world than choosing between Sasuke and Naruto. But what she did know, was where her loyalties lied when she stared at one bloodied arm before her.
"He's a traitor."
"It's his punishment."
"This will weaken him."
"Sakura, don't do it."
With shaky hands, ("How ironic,") Sakura picked up the surviving arm from the battlefield and prepared it for surgery. No matter her feelings, Naruto had never abandoned her once - and now was time to repay the favor.
This was the moment all her years of training was for.
Walking towards the surgery room, Sakura put on her mask of a professional medic and not of a despaired lover. Quietly moving, she could never once bear to look past Sasuke's room as she entered Naruto. It was easier to ignore what she was betraying.
Several hours later when sun had fallen to be replaced by a cold moon, Sakura wondered if the surgery was the easiest or hardest thing she'd ever done. Medical wise, not too difficult. She was capable of sowing back pieces of bodies ever since.. a long time ago. But emotionally wise-
No words came to her mind. No words came to reply her answer except for the tingling feeling in her feet that ruled by feelings and not logic.
And wasn't Sakura the one that's always ruled by emotions?
Slowly but steadily, her body moved itself to another room that was surely closed to the public. With a shallow breath, the medic was finally able to feast her eyes on the sight she had been waiting for.
"I thought it was past visiting hours."
Of course he wouldn't be able to sleep in the hospital. Sasuke never liked the place, polar opposites to how powerful Sakura felt in her hospital.
"I'm here to check up on you, Sasuke-kun."
Silence answered her, and she knew he believed it just as much as she knew it was a lie. But it didn't stop her from doting on him. Careful hands removed bandages soaked in blood. Gentle chakra encouraged healing the worst parts. Softly placed towels wiped over places that had excess blood. All this, while trying to ignore the whispers in the back of her head.
You caused this. You couldn't help him. You failed.
So when Sakura finished staring at the freshly bandaged arm, she avoided his eyes. Eyes which she knew would be accusing, hateful, vengeance to her care. Only irony could laugh at how she promised to protect Team 7, and here was permanent proof of her failure.
"Sakura."
Green eyes flickered up to meet black ones, and she immediately knew it was a mistake. His eyes were not accusing, hateful, vengeance. They were nothing. Empty like always. And she lost it.
"I'm sorry Sasuke-kun. I-I.." Shaking quietly, she shuddered a few deep breaths. "I have to check up on others, your second check-up will be tomorrow morning." And she ran out.
Sakura didn't know whether Sasuke's forgiveness was harder to accept than her own.
