Not the Hippies!

~PoM and M~

The zoo was closed but the lemur habitat was lit as if for a party and a party was what they were having.

The whole zoo showed up to the welcoming party for the four newcomers, Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria. Everything was going great! The penguins picked the lock on the four's caged habitat so they could attend as the guests of honor.

Everyone was socializing and they were meeting a whole bunch of new people, making friends!

Gloria met Marlene and Melman got to know Maurice better. Marty was getting to know the dudes of the zoo and Alex- well….then there was Alex…

"Will you lighten up? We're at a party Alex! A party for us and you're just moping!" Marty said.

"I'm not moping." Alex muttered, his glare and pout still on full blast in a certain direction.

Marty frowned. "Al, would ya stop glaring over at Skipper like that? It's getting kinda rude."

"Yeah!" Gloria added. "Why are you so pouty anyway?"

"I hate him." Alex muttered. "I hate him, guys. Look at him over there, with his friends, and I hate him!"

The four original Zoosters looked over to where Alex was glaring towards. It was directed towards the penguins. Skipper to be exact.

"Come on Alex, not this again..." Melman sighed.

"What?" Alex grouched. "Why can't I hate that stupid penguin?"

"You guys take care of this, I'm gone again. I'm gonna go hang out with Julien." Marty said and went off somewhere else in the lemur habitat to find the host of the party.

"Uh, yeah, I should go find Maurice!" Melman stammered, and then raced off wanting away from there.

Once the other two were gone, Gloria put her hands on her hips staring at Alex expectantly.

"What?" Alex glared.

"Uh-uh, don't you what me! You should be ashamed of yourself hating on such a charming little penguin. This whole thing better not be because someone else is in the spotlight who isn't you!"

"Gloria, it's not like that, okay? You don't understand."

"Oh I understand alright!" Gloria said and pulled the lion by the ear.

"Okay, OW! You know that hurts right?" the lion exclaimed.

"I understand that you are going to go over there and talk to those sweet little boys and work things out! Now go on!" The hippo shoved him forward.

"Come on, really!" Alex protested.

"Go on." Gloria urged.

Alex groaned and started walking in the direction of the four flightless birds reluctantly, with a hatred building up as he got closer and closer, his angry expression building until he was right behind them. He could have breathed fire he was so full of fury. Of course that all changed when Skipper turned around to face him.

Alex was looking down at the tiny flightless bird, and Skipper was looking up at the huge angry lion. Their eyes met, and something changed.

"Hi Alex!" Private waved, lifting up the brim of his party hat that covered his eyes. "It sure was nice of Julien to throw the four of you a welcome back to the zoo party, wasn't it? The party is quite a turn out don't you think?"

Rico blew a party horn in the lion's face.

Alex winced at the noise, annoyed at it but kept his composure as he put his paws together. "Oh yeah, some party. It's nice...was a surprise, I was surprised but uh, but I'm having fun...what...what about you guys?"

"Oh, not much." Skipper replied. "Just lounging around. Boys wanted to come and have some fun."

"Is that right?" Alex said almost bitterly through a forced smile. What? Did Skipper have something else he'd rather be doing? Did he not even want to come to the party that was in 1/4 of the lion's honor? He hated him, he hated him, he hated- "That's nice. It's always good to get out of the old concrete junk house every once in a while...yeah...So what's new?"

"Besides you guys? Not much." Skipper replied.

"Us huh? You don't have anything else going on? What? Nothing else in your life?" Alex asked casually but with scorn.

At this point, Kowalski and Rico were the only ones frowning as they watched this endeavor. This didn't sound so much like a friendly conversation to them, in fact it was starting to sound like something else entirely.

Private smiled obliviously to it all. "Well of course we do other things. We do train in the morning time after breakfast and then Skippah gives us the rest of the day off if nothing else is going on."

Alex nodded. "Does he now?"

Without breaking his frown or his eye contact with the big cat, Skipper called back, "Kowalski, Rico. Could you take Private somewhere else please?"

"Is something wrong, Skippah?" Private asked with concern.

"No, no, I'd just rather have this between the two of us."

The private still didn't understand but always followed orders even if he didn't. "Well, alright, we could go check out the snack bar. I bet there's Winky's over there! I do hope there are!" Private said with glee, making the leader smile.

With that, the three wandered away, leaving the penguin and the lion alone.

"Something wrong?" Alex asked before taking a sip of his coconut drink.

"There seems to be since you're acting so hostile to me and my team." The bitterness in Skippers voice was as clear as crystal.

"Hostile? I'm...I'm acting hostile?" Alex scoffed. "Please."

"You may try to hide it, but with every work you speak comes the truth."

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Alex said.

"You should."

"Nope, I don't." Alex shook his head and lowered his voice down to a whisper. "You should work on your people skills. They're a little off." He insulted.

Kowalski shook his head as he watched the two main characters talk. "I don't like this. From the velocity of how rapid their mouths are moving and how close their proximity is getting with each exclamation this can only end badly."

Private pulled the half-eaten Winky from his beak and looked in the direction of the lion and leader with a frown.

"Gehmblababuhgah?" Rico babbled and coughed up a bazooka gun, targeting Alex with it. "Boom?"

"Put that AWAY! Skipper specifically said no weapons at zoo social gatherings!" Kowalski scolded.

"Awww!" Rico wined, tossing his weapon to the ground.

"What's wrong with Alex and Skippah?" Private asked, concerned for his two favorite people. He admired them both always.

"They seem to be in quite the heated argument." The analyst told the private.

"But why? They were having such a lovely discussion before about their social lives." Private said, clueless. Why were the two fighting all of a sudden when they were getting along so well?

"It's a complicated matter." Kowalski responded, shaking his head at the clueless youngster. "…which has just gotten inexplicably worse!" Kowalski exclaimed, watching a fight start to break out between them.

"We did everything we could to help you get back here!" Skipper yelled. "In the end though, we just couldn't do any more for you!"

"Couldn't Skipper, huh? Or WOULDN'T?" Alex shouted back.

"Couldn't! With the materials we had for the plane, we could only carry the select few of us so far!"

"And the few select just so happened to be you, your guys, the chimps and the king of the guinea pigs and his posse! Everyone but us though right?"

"It's not my fault if the plane could no longer hold you! I had to think about the welfare of everyone else. It crashed twice without any fatal outcomes! We wouldn't be so lucky a third time around! I made the best decision possible for everyone!"

"Yeah, for everyone but us!" Alex insisted. "I trusted you guys to get us back! I put my whole faith in you! And you didn't do ANYTHING!" The lion pushed the penguin backwards with force.

"I told you, I did what was best for EVERYONE!" Skipper tried to hold in his temper, but it was getting tricky.

"NO! Because you were too worried about yourself!" Alex said and that really crossed the line.

Skipper hit him across the face. "I would never think of myself over others! And you know why? Because I'd rather die in a million plane crashes than be a selfish little brat like you!"

There was a loud and deafening roar that traveled through the entire party. The music stopped, animals gasped and looked up, all eyes on the unscathed penguin and seething lion to the side of the habitat.

Alex had his paw raised as if to strike the leader with his outstretched claws. He'd caught himself and was now panting, looking between his paw and the bird. He lowered his hand, slightly shocked at his own actions but still glaring down at the penguin.

The three penguins that had seen the whole thing play out were in a state of shock and surprise. Private was the most with both his flippers over his beak.
