Hi Guys! Sorry I haven't updated in a while! I am currently in my preliminary year (that's year 11) at school and the workload is killing me. I am on holidays now so that frees up some time. So sorry guys! Hope you enjoy this chapter.
Kathryn arrived to the hall for breakfast a little late and by that time, nearly everyone had finished eating. She didn't sit down but instead said, "I have a request to make."
All attention was on her now. "What request might this be?" Charlotte asked.
"I want to leave The Institute. Permanently." There was a silence for a second before "I have a solution to this. I want everyone to move to my home. There is enough room for everyone."
"And what about protection? What about our weapons?"
"From what I know, protection is basic runes and I have enough space for the weapons."
"What makes you think we should accept?" Came Will's voice from the corner.
"Well, for your comfortability, I have stayed at your home, for weeks. You have stripped me of my freedoms and my home. I am merely snatching it back." Kathryn shrugged as if she were asking for a glass of water.
"I'll think about it." Charlotte said, her voice uncertain.
Kathryn smiled. "Good." She sat down to eat breakfast and then went on with her day.
Kathryn's day was pretty uneventful. She did a little reading and walked around in the gardens for a while. Looking out into the garden made Kathryn realize how much she missed her own gardens at her place. She longed to go back and wished that Charlotte would accept her request. Soon enough, it was time for dinner and Kathryn made her way down, on time. The anticipation was killing her. What would Charlotte say?
When she sat down, the first thing that Kathryn noticed was that everyone looked a little down. Kathryn hadn't the slightest clue why.
"I believe we will be able to move." Charlotte announced. Kathryn nearly shot up from her seat. "However, you must realize that this is our home, and this will be hard for us."
Kathryn wanted to smile but she kept her composure and said a simple "thank you."
When Kathryn got to her room, she was giddy with happiness and excitement. No longer would she be trapped. She would be in her home! When Jem came into the room, Kathryn nearly forgot all her happiness and sobered up.
"Kathryn-" Jem started and then halted.
"Wait. Let me first. I know you think that I can be fixed or changed. But I can't."
"This is not like you." Jem whispered.
"But isn't it. How do you know? Look Jem, I don't do relationships. I have have. I never will."
Jem was stunned. He could only manage a small "why?"
"Why what?"
"Why will you never do relationships?" Jem asked again, his voice stronger.
"I hate the concept of love. I can't stand when love makes you weak. It's a liability I cannot afford."
"Kathryn."
"No! You heard what I've had to say. Leave it be."
Kathryn turned and went back to her bed. She felt unimaginably guilty for hurting Jem but she couldn't risk be vulnerable. What would happen to the independent, strong women that Kathryn was if she fell in love? She would reduced to a dependent, sniffling girl. And Kathryn never wanted that. She crawled into her bed repeating the same mantra "you are strong. You don't need this."
When morning came, Kathryn woke giddy as ever! The process to move would start today! Then she remembered Jem and her mood somewhat dimmed a little. It wasn't, however enough for her not to feel excitement.
She quickly dressed and a pants and blouse and rushed down only to see that everything was being loaded into a large carriage. She watched for a while until Tessa came out and said,
"This is the last of the things. Everyone's already at your place, it's just me and you."
Kathryn was so happy, she could've fainted. She didn't even realise how awkward the journey to her place would be with Tessa in the car until she got in the car. They both didn't say anything to each other but the awkward tension was high. Kathryn wished the journey to end. And music, Kathryn felt like music.
When they got to the house after what seemed like forever, Kathryn got out only to see that everyone was waiting on the front porch of her house. She got out and went to them.
"Why haven't you guys gone inside?"
"The door is locked." Jem said. Kathryn's raised her eyebrows.
"Really? Couldn't you have using a rune or better yet just unpicked my lock."
"We don't like to go in a house uninvited."
Kathryn scoffed. Really? That was all that was stopping them from setting up. So self-righteous. She unlocked the door to let them in. Her home was stunning and she knew that. New and modern. Tasteful decor. Art from all around the world. Authentic, obviously.
When she walked in, she called "Lillian!"
A second later, the click-clack of shoes came down the stairs. "Mistress! You're back!" Lillian threw herself around Kathryn, laughing. "We were all so worried. We didn't know how long you were going to be away and Vivian wouldn't tell us anything!"
"I'm sure she was missing me as much as you lot are. Come, let me take a look at you." Kathryn held Lillian at arms length examining her. "Your sewing skills are getting better and better..." Lillian beamed at the praise.
"Vivian is out for the moment. I think she'll be back this evening. I see you have brought guests. Will you not introduce me to them?"
"Oh sorry. Lillian, this is Will Herondale, Charlotte, Sophie, Tessa, Henry and Jem Carstairs." Kathryn gestured to each of them as she made her introductions.
"Nice to meet you all." Lillian gushed.
"Lillian, tell the others to help you prepare rooms for our guests, they will be staying here... indefinitely."
"Yes sure. I'll get on that!" Lillian scurried away. Kathryn turned to look at people who now were her guests.
"Well, since I never got a tour of the Institute, I'm sure as hell not going to give you people one. Feel free to wander until you find whatever place you are looking for." With that, Kathryn walked off, leaving her guests at the door.
Kathryn felt triumphant. She was back home. She was here. She could smell the familiar smell of her home. The gardens were waiting for her. She couldn't wait to sleep in her own bedroom. Her gowns of satin and silk were calling to her. How could she resist? Walking past the main foyer, where she had left all the crew not even 5 minutes ago.
She took the stairs instead of the automatic contraption that was designed to take them up. Ever since elevators were designed, houses had become taller with more floors. Kathryn's home was already quite tall but even she had these so called 'elevators' installed in her house. She wouldn't be left behind in this modern technology that was no emerging. Vivienne had loved them. However, today, Kathryn decided to take the stairs up. She relished in the feel of the cool marble under her hand and her click of her heels as she climbed.
After about five sets of stairs, Kathryn was nearly out of breath. She wondered how Tessa in her tight gown had climbed the stairs. She was sure frigid little Tessa wouldn't be courageous enough to take the elevator.
She passed all the rooms down the hallway to get to her room. Strangely, all the doors were open and all of them were unpacking. She saw Will take out a long blade with intricate little designs on the blade. She saw Charlotte and Henry unpack a leather outfit of some sort. She saw Jessamine take out a long, yellow, frilly gown that made Kathryn want to gag. She saw Tessa take out a large book with the writing The Shadowhunter's Codex. Finally, she saw Jem carefully take out a most beautiful violin.
She got to her room and marveled at how everything was dust free and clean. Lillian must have cleaned it before she left. Kathryn spent the whole day in her room, reading, writing and marveling at the park just outside her window.
When dinner approached, Kathryn begrudgingly got up and took the elevator down to the main foyer. She was sure everyone would find the way to the dining hall eventually. Vivienne wouldn't be joining them but eventually every member came slowly pouring into the dining hall. Dinner was served shortly after. Each ate their food in silence as if speaking was a large taboo at this house. It wasn't and only Kathryn seemed to understand that. They were half-way through eating when a voice came from the doorway.
"Jesus! I didn't know the whole gang was joining us today. Is there some charity that I didn't get an invitation to?"
So yeah! Hope you liked. Please review if you can and I will be updating The Real Me shortly!
