CHAPTER 10: TESTING THE WATERS
Isaac was currently riding his bike to Brooke's house, like he does every morning, to walk with her to school. But unlike other days, today he just wanted to stay home and sleep. He barely got any sleep last night.
His talk with Derek only lasted an hour, but when he got home he could hardly get any sleep as his mind was wrapping around everything that he was told.
Werewolves. They weren't something that people just told to scare little kids, or folktales told in olden days to explain something that they couldn't understand. They were real, and Derek was one of them. Isaac still couldn't believe it, but when he saw Derek's eyes flash red and fangs appear, he knew that there was no denying his words.
And Derek was looking for a pack, a pack that he was invited to. But he still didn't know what to choose. He would give up the chance of being someone normal, he would end up a new target for so called hunters to find and destroy, and there would always be a kind of instinct for him to wolf out and attack anything in sight, if he doesn't find his anchor.
But he would gain so much. He would finally be part of a family, a pack. He would finally be strong and not defenseless; he could finally gain the respect that was long overdue. And most of all, he could be strong for Brooke. He could finally be the pillar of strength that she would need, and he would also gain freedom from his father. Because at least now his father's punches wouldn't hurt and if they did they would instantly be healed.
But he still had to think about it.
There was still some sort of pull that kept him from accepting the bite. And he knew that it was humanity. He would lose that too, and who knows how long it would take for him to get it back. Derek told him that every full moon he would have the instinct to harm anything in your way, you craved blood, and would do anything for the shed of it. And for the first weeks, your wolf would be in control and he would need to know how to control it.
And he felt that once he would lose control he would never gain it back.
Brooke was patiently waiting at the corner where they meet up. But each passing second, she knew that Isaac was closer and closer to arriving. And what would she do when he gets here? She still can't believe that she kissed him yesterday, and he did the same too. She felt that it was the spur of the moment, and her curiosity just got the better of her, like it has the tendency to do, like the other day, when she sneaked into Isaac's basement, to find what was making that noise.
But was it really her curiosity of wanting to know what kissing Isaac would be, or was it because she really wanted to kiss him? She didn't know. But would their friendship be awkward, would he try to bring it up, or would he just forget it? She wanted to know so badly, and when she looked up she saw him pedaling towards her. At least she would soon get her answer.
"Good morning Brooke", Isaac said with a bright smile, but with a blush on clearly on his face, as he got off his bike.
"Morning Isaac", she said with a smile as she looked away to hide her blush.
They stood there in an awkward silence, something that normally didn't happen between them. Brooke rocked herself, trying to find something to talk about, but all she could think about was that kiss. She remembered how soft his lips felt on the corner of her mouth and skin, and how she wanted to feel her lips pressed against his. She remembered how she went home and replayed it over and over in her room, and not once did her heartbeat slow down.
"So… about yesterday", they both said at that same time making them stop talking and stare at each other blankly.
They continued staring at each other waiting for the other to continue their sentence, but none would do anything. Making the situation more awkward, and once again this was something that normally didn't happen, and Brooke didn't like it one bit.
"You go first", Isaac gestured for her to continue.
"Umm", she didn't know what to say, she didn't want to say the wrong thing to him, and she didn't know what to day, "it didn't mean anything right?"
Isaac was taken back. Of course it meant something! To him that small gesture meant that he finally had a chance to show Brooke that he could love her the way she deserves, that she felt something for him, even if it wasn't to the same degree as him. But maybe to her it was just the spur of the moment, but how could he reply to her. Could he lie straight to her face, or tell her the truth.
"I… I don't know, did it mean something to you", he said noticing that his tone had a gloomy sound and looked away, so she wouldn't see the hurt in his eyes.
Brooke didn't know either. She knew that there was something about that kiss that made her reply it over and over, but did it mean something? Or was it just her curiosity getting the better of her like it usually does?
"I don't know either, but I don't want things to change between us, you're my best friend Isaac, and I don't lose that", she said voicing her inner turmoil to him.
She started to walk forward, because they had to get to school, and stopped to turn around and gestured for Isaac to start moving.
"Brooke, you're my best friend too. I wouldn't want to lose you, especially with everything that's going on in my life", he said as he caught up to her, "but no matter what happens between us, I'll always be your best friend".
She smiled, at least the awkwardness was slowly fading between them, but that still didn't solve her feelings for him. She knew that if her feelings for Isaac were just like best friends, then why did she feel so nervous right now, she could feel that her cheeks were on fire. She shouldn't feel anything like this for him.
"Thanks Isaac", she said as she looked away hoping that he wouldn't see her blushing face, "and I'll be your best friend through everything too".
As they were walking next to each other, going back to being just friends and nothing more. But while they were walking she felt her hand brush against Isaac's. She felt her hand tingle with just that touch making her want to feel his hand again to see if she will still get that same reaction. But that would once again push the lines of their friendship into uncharted territory. But when she felt his hand brush against hers again she didn't pull back and looked up at Isaac and saw that he was looking away from her, something that he usually does when he's nervous of something. Maybe he liked feeling her hand brush against hers too.
They were close to the school, and their hands still brushing together every now and then, some by Brooke and others by Isaac, but each time she could feel her heart beat race and her cheeks fire up. She knew that her feelings for Isaac, aren't just friends anymore, there would always be undertones of her liking him more than that that. But she can't act out on her feelings; they were best friends and nothing more.
But as they stood in front of the school, and in this hand brush it was slower and lingering to the point where each of their fingers were slowly intertwining. Isaac took the next step and slowly began to interlace his hand with hers, taking a hold of her smaller hand in his. Each move was so slow because he felt that if he made any sudden movements, he would scare her away.
And then slowly their fingertips were intertwined, as his thumb brushed against hers in a soothing way. They didn't dare look each other face to face, but they looked at each other through their lashes and look away when one would catch them looking.
Isaac was in cloud nine, he loved knowing that Brooke let him do this, and that she wasn't pushing him away. He did have a chance, because if he didn't, this wouldn't be happening. It made him rethink everything about the bite, maybe he didn't need it. He could win Brooke's heart without the bite's gift. But he wouldn't be able to protect her, and if werewolves did exist, then those attacks of mountain lion last year were werewolf attacks, making Beacon Hills unsafe. Sure, the chances of her getting attack were slim, but that doesn't mean she was safe, she could still get hurt and so could her family. So maybe accepting the bite would make him strong enough to protect her from everything, including the supernatural.
He wanted to hold her hand entirely, he wanted to feel her small soft hand in his, and maybe now she might kiss him again. He slowly inched his hand around hers, to fully intertwine their hands, and Brooke wasn't stopping him, she was just looking away. He wanted her to respond to him, to want this as much as he did. So instead of fully lacing his hand with hers, he just let their hands barely touch.
Brooke's heart was racing, Isaac was trying to hold her hand, and she couldn't stop him, because she wanted it too. But when he stopped, she wanted him to continue. So she didn't know what to do. But she wanted to feel her hand against his, and so she moved her hand, fully intertwining with his.
The feel of her hand in his, was so shocking. She felt her body fill with a warm feeling that she hoped would never cease. She wanted to say something, but bit her lip to keep from saying anything. When she looked up at Isaac, she saw that he was looking straight at her. Emerald met cerulean, and she slowly leaned forward. She knew that she shouldn't be doing this, but she needed to know what kissing him would be like.
Isaac leaned in too, because this was something that he had wanted for a long time. Their lips were inches apart, and their eyes were slowly closing, but they kept looking at each other's eyes.
"Hey Brooke!" Was heard behind the pair making them split to quickly put space between them, and awkwardly look away from each other.
Stiles was the owner of the voice and he and Scott were approaching the pair. They and Brooke have been friends since the start of high school but never as close, like her and Isaac. They used to be really close too, but lately they kept their distance from her. It hurt a lot, she was reserved girl, making her have few friends. So when he and Scott pushed her away, it made her feel horrible. And it hurt even more when she noticed that they pushed her away, the new girl, Allison Argent, was becoming part of their group, as well as Lydia, the girl who would make it hard for her and Isaac, with the insults and stares sent their way. They pushed her away, and let other people be friends with her, but she still kindly talked to them, because she did consider them good people, even if they casted her aside.
But despite being somewhat friends with Brooke, they weren't that close with Isaac because being friends would ruin your reputation. And considering how the lacrosse team was gaining them a lot of popularity and respect they didn't want to lose it, since not too long ago, they weren't the most respected kids too.
"Hey Stiles", she said to him and greeted Scott too.
"Isaac", Stiles and Scott said acknowledging his presence but not really talking to him.
"Hey", he said knowing that they didn't want to speak to him, but he was there for Brooke not them, but he wished that they didn't show up because who knows what would have happened between him and Brooke.
Scott was watching Brooke's and Stiles's interaction, but with his supernatural hearing, the only thing that caught his hearing was two rapid beating hearts. He searched for the owners of these hearts, and knew that they belonged to Brooke and Isaac. He looked between them and noticed how much they avoided each other's gazes but he noticed how both their cheeks were flushed red, and every now and then he would see Isaac look at Brooke. When they were walking over to greet their friend, they saw that she was just standing in front of him, but never bothered to see what was going on between them, but by the looks of it, they interrupted a private moment. And he sure didn't want to interrupt anymore.
"Hey Stiles", the young werewolf said getting his attention, "I think we should head inside, I mean we have that thing that we have to care of" he said trying to make Stiles notice that they had to leave.
"What thing?" Stiles said sounding very confused, and Brooke was confused as well.
"That thing", he said sounding more urgent for him to get going.
Stiles finally understood that they just needed to leave, "Ok alright, well see you later Brooke, see you in class I guess" he said with a warm smile, "Isaac", he said and then they left leaving Brooke and Isaac a bit confused.
"They sure seemed in a hurry to leave", Isaac said as he chained his bike to the rails.
"Yea, but they always seem to do that", she said with a saddened tone remembering all the times that Scott and Stiles would cancel plans with her, and would purposely ditch her, and then find them hanging out with Allison and Lydia. "But I always got you, right?"
"Yea, not going to get rid of me that easily", Isaac said as they walked into school.
All throughout the day the only thing that people were talking about was the disappearance of Lydia Martin and it had Brooke pretty scared, especially with news of mountain lion attacks. But Isaac on the other hand was more worried, because he know knew of the dangers that lurked in their hometown. He was slowly putting the pieces back together, and knew that Lydia was most likely attacked by a werewolf and was either dead, or she was going to shift.
He knew that he was risking a lot by accepting the bite but he had to do just that, because if not more people would end up hurt, and it could easily be Brooke. He knew that if he accepted the bite, he could protect not only her but others, and would become a silent hero; his life would finally have some sort of meaning and purpose, something that he hadn't felt in a long time. But he was still unsure if he should accept the bite.
"You staying for lacrosse practice?" Isaac asked Brooke since it was now after school.
"No, I can't I have to finish a few assignments, but if you want I could work on my homework on the bleachers, while you practice?" she said wanting to be there for Isaac.
"You sure that you can stay?" He asked.
"Pretty sure I can", she responded with a smile.
The two made it to the locker room, where Brooke waited for Isaac to change into his lacrosse uniform. But her mind was plagued with thoughts of Isaac. He soon exited the locker room, and found Brooke sitting next to the door, looking over her notes from class.
"You don't have to stay", Isaac said startling Brooke that she threw her papers into the air.
She quickly gathered them up and stood up to face Isaac, "I know but I want to".
"Fine, but here, take this", he said as he handed her his worn out blue hoodie.
She looked at him with a puzzled look, not sure if she should take the hoodie. "It's going to be cold", he explained.
She nodded and reached out for his hoodie. As she took it from him, she felt her fingers brush against his, making that familiar warm tingle spread throughout her body. She saw that Isaac's eyes widened and knew that he felt something for her too. She had yet to remove her hands and let her fingertips bask in his warm touch; she really needed to control herself, because she would never want to risk losing her best friend. Yet she couldn't pull away.
"Brooke, are you ok?" he asked knowing that she wasn't moving an inch.
"Uh, yea, thanks Isaac", she said as she came back into reality and taking the hoodie from his hands, already missing the heat of his hands. She instantly put on his hoodie, and all her senses were filled with the scent of Isaac, something that strangely soothes her. She looked up at Isaac and noticed that he had this very soft smile on his face, "what?"
"Uh, nothing", he said trying to mask his thoughts, but in reality he was smiling because he loved seeing her wear his clothes, it made it seem like she was his, "come on, I'll help you carry you carry your stuff over there", he said as he was going to reach for her stuff, but she pulled away.
"No, you have to head to the field before coach gets mad at you, I can handle this myself", she said with a smile, which he gladly returned.
He was about to leave when he felt Brooke take a hold of his hand keeping him in place. Brooke's heart was racing and she felt that she needed to kiss him again. She felt Isaac turn and she leaned up like yesterday. She closed her eyes and pressed her lips to the corner of his mouth, but let more of lips touch his, and just like yesterday she felt her lips tingle, "Good luck Isaac", she said and walked away. She felt that maybe Isaac would eventually push her away, because that sort of contact wasn't something that best friends would do. She needed to run from this situation. He reached out for her hand. He held her hand almost interlacing their fingers together and pulled her back. Brooke was mentally preparing herself for anything that Isaac might say, because she felt that he might push her away.
But instead she felt his lips on her cheeks, almost touching her lips, "thanks Brooke and good luck in your homework".
"Wait Isaac", he said stopping in his tracks to face her, "what are we?" she said voicing the question that had arisen since that day in the cemetery.
Isaac's breath hitched, because he too wanted to ask this to Brooke, he didn't know the answer, and he hoped that maybe Brooke knew the answer. They were both didn't know what they were, but maybe they could find out together.
"I don't know", he said walking straight to her; "I thought we were just best friends".
"Isaac, I know that were friends, but you know that there's something different, and I don't know how to label what we are", she said as she approached him.
"I don't know either", he said as he reached for her hand, and thankfully she didn't push his hand away, instead he let him hold her hand. "But do we need to label this?"
"It would help", she said as she enjoyed the feeling of his hand wrapped around her.
"Well what do you think that we are?" he asked wanting to know exactly what she thought they were, he wanted to know if maybe his feelings for Brooke might finally be met, and then he might be able to call her 'his', instead of dreaming of it.
"Best friends", he felt his heart sink, maybe he thought wrong of this whole situation. But just when he was going to let go of her hand, he felt her hand tighten on his, "but there's something more, but I don't know what it is, but I just don't want to lose you".
Isaac couldn't stand it. He saw the way Brooke was struggling with what there were, but he needed to know what they were, "fine then, how about you show me what you feel about me".
Brooke looked up at him. Show him? Was the only thought that ran through her head. How could she show him what she felt? But she knew what do to. She leaned up and placed a chaste kiss on his lips, she let her lips linger on his, and hoped that he wouldn't push her away, and then put space between them, and looked up at him to gauge his reaction. In that small kiss all she could feel were a sea of butterflies swirling through her stomach, and knew that she wanted to kiss him, and not her curiosity getting the better of her. She really was falling for her best friend, and part of her was happy that she was, but another part of her felt that if she did, she would end up heartbroken and hurt. She thought that Isaac would be disgusted with her, but when she looked up at him, all she saw was a warm smile form on his lips.
"I feel the same too", he said.
"Yea but friends don't do that, they shouldn't", she said to him.
"I know, but maybe we could be…more", he whispered, "how about we try that, we'll take things slowly because I don't want to lose you too"
She didn't know if she should accept that offer. Test the waters of what they could be, before taking the full dive in a relationship. She should take it, but if things didn't work out, could they still go back to being just best friends? Was trying to be in a relationship with him worth the risk?
"I don't think I can", she said feeling her insecurities getting the better of her.
"Brooke", he said taking a hold of her hand again, "I wouldn't hurt you ever, not like those boys you dated, I'm not telling you we have to date, but we can go as slow as you want, and if it doesn't work out then we'll stop, just think about it. I have to go to practice, you're still staying right?"
She nodded, "I'll think about it" she said.
As Isaac walked back to the locker room, to get to the field, he knew that things were finally looking good for him. She was slowly letting him into her heart, and he would do anything to make sure he gets it, because if there's anything that his father's abuse taught him, it was how to keep going and to keep fighting. And surely that is what he was going to do, he would win her heart. And decided that he would take the bite, he just needed to find Derek.
