Chapter 10: Genai

"HILARYYY!"

Hilary just stood there, watching in horror as she saw this Pursuer, this demon, flying full speed towards her. She was completely frozen out of fear.

It was a matter of a mere second. Hilary was standing there, frozen, the next moment, just as the demon clashed as the spot; Hilary was gone from it.

"You humans really are stupid!"

Hilary jolted out of her frozen fear and stared at her savior in surprise, though the surprise was soon replaced with new fear as she looked directly into the face of another demon. She only went even paler as she noticed how his left arm was practically replaced with a scissor.

The demon's lips merely curled into a grin as he could feel the girl's fear, but instead of doing anything to her, he dropped her off on Tyson before he continued his flight upwards.

"SINNEEERR!" the demon which had been about to attack Hilary roared at the one which had saved her. Surely, this caught the attention of the two other Pursuers who now turned their gaze towards the newest arrival at the party.

The demon merely let out a 'Tsch' at the Pursuers. How simple to catch their attention.

Rosette decided to not ask any questions at this given moment; she loaded her gun and aimed straight at one of the smaller, still-standing Pursuers before she fired she fired the strongest bullet she had at the given moment.

The Gospel soared through the air, a strong light emerging from it before it hit one of the Pursuers straight in the back. The Pursuer roared as it was engulfed in the light and disappeared.

The sharp sound of metal ramming against metal was heard as the newest demon opened and closed the blades making out half of his left arm. "Why, not particularly strong Pursuers if taken out by such little." He snorted.

Max ran up next to Rosette as he stared up in the air at the scene. He was in awe over the effect the Gospel had but at the same time still highly frightened by the whole situation. "Who is that demon?" his eyes darted towards their still newest arrival before his gaze then turned towards the two Pursuers which were still left.

Rosette didn't lower her gun, though she was unsure whether to point it towards the newest arrival or towards one of the Pursuers. "… Genai the Sinner." She breathed out. She didn't exactly have any good memories of him.

Genai was taking some deep breaths; despite his denials of it, he was already by now getting exhausted. A smirk just came onto his lips, "Yo, Rei. Let's show them who the Sinners really are, shall we?"

Rei's ears twitched as he heard Genai speaking directly to him. To say he was surprised to see Genai right there, fully alive, was underestimating it. He had been quite sure none of the others were left, but right there, flying around in the air, was Genai. Next moment, Rei flared his wings and set off from the ground he was standing on to join Genai. Getting rid of the Pursuers was first priority; questioning Genai was second priority.

The second of the smaller Pursuers growled, "You think you are something?! You who are nothing! You, who have nowhere to go!"

Genai let out a laugh, "With Pandamonium gone for years, you don't really have anywhere to go either!"

Rei's eyes narrowed at the Pursuers. "For such low-lives you are speaking with quite big words. Perhaps you should actually become something before you can speak any about it?"

"What… is he doing..?" Max asked with a low voice, still standing next to Rosette. It scared him to see his friend change attitude like this… that he looked so much down on others.

Rosette didn't answer. In her years together with Chrno, she had come to notice a habit of demons talking down to their opponents; Chrno had also done it on several occasions. She just wasn't sure what exactly it was…

It was easy to see how the Pursuer's body gave a twitch. He was beginning to get pissed off, and these two good-for-nothing dared to challenge his authority? With a deep snarl he flew directly at the two Sinners.

Genai and Rei had well seen it coming and parted ways, the Pursuer flying directly in between them. While Rei merely flew higher up in the air, not paying much attention to the small Pursuer but kept his eyes on the bear-like one, Genai changed directions and flew directly at the Pursuer.

The Pursuer swung around in order to attack, but it wasn't fast enough. The blades on Genai's arm parted and when the closed again, they parted the Pursuer's head from the body. He delivered a harsh kick to the body, sending it straight to the ground. Afterwards, he turned in the air and then just threw the head at the largest demon in the park. "A souvenir! From me to you!"

The last-standing Pursuer didn't react –at least not to begin with. He just stood there, on the ground, watching the two Sinners intently. Slowly, very slowly, his eyes began to narrow dangerously before he gave an earsplitting roar at the two. Kill them, that was what he intend to do.

Genai and Rei shortly exchanged glances; or at least it looked like that was the motion they didn't. It wasn't entirely to tell considering Genai didn't have any eyes and a leathery blindfold was covering the upper half of his face.

"I believe you could have left out that last sentence." Rei commented.

Genai merely huffed, "Shut it."

With another roar, it could be seen how fire was beginning to form at the bottom of the Pursuer's throat before he spit it out as if he was a flamethrower. And the fire had taken the direction towards the two Sinners.

Without further thinking, Rei raised his hands above his head, a ball of lightning forming between his hands. It became larger and larger until it was the size of Rei's own torso. With a spin in the air, Rei swung his arm and threw the ball of lightning directly at the fire and the source of the fire.

The ball of lightning tore itself through the fire, creating an opening directly through the fire and continued straight towards the wide open mouth of the Pursuer.

As if a speeding bullet, Genai swiftly followed the ball of lightning through the fire. Rei on the other hand, flew in the opposite direction to get away from the fire.

The humans left on the ground could do nothing but watch as the ball of lightning went through the gape of the Pursuer, closely followed by Genai. What started as a roared ended with the sound of choked gurgling as Genai went straight through the demon and reappeared by the back of the demons neck as he had torn his way through flesh and bones. As Genai flew away from the Pursuer, another ball of lightning came through the air, colliding with the Pursuer's head and blowing it off.

Seconds passed by, and the large body just stood still-standing where it had been most of the time. Suddenly it fell forwards and landed on the ground, a quite heavy sound and slight shaking could be felt through the ground as the huge body had collided with it.

Rei slowly landed on the ground by his human friends before he changed back to his human form. He glanced shortly at their many different expressions before he looked away. Those who were used to fight demons aka Satella and Rosette, were not really touched by what had happened, but the others? Despite the training they had gotten, it was still quite new to them and it was very clear to see from the expressions on their faces.

Genai soon after landed on the ground next to Rei. His body was shaking slightly from exhaustion as he changed back to his human form as well. Compared to Rei, he didn't give the slightest damn about the humans though. He did pay plenty of attention to Rei, on the other hand, as he swung his fist so it collided directly with Rei's face.

Rei stumbled backwards but stay on his feet. He could feel Genai's exhaustion in his punch; it wasn't particularly strong.

"Oi! What the hell you think you're doing?!" Tyson leaped forward to grab onto Genai's arm to stop him from approaching Rei further, but he was merely showed aside.

Genai bared his fangs at Rei and grabbed onto the collar of his shirt, "You were alive this whole time! Chrno! Aion..! …Viede..! …Rizelle…!" he croaked out the last two names. "You let them die!"

A sad expression crossed Rei's features. "You know I didn't let them die…" he mumbled. "There was nothing I could have done, with the plans Aion had and how stubborn he was…"

Genai let out a sound of disapproval, but reconnecting his brain, he did know Rei was right; he could just as well have went against Aion's orders as Rei could have appeared to say something to Aion.

Rosette said nothing as she just watched the scene. The last time she had encountered Genai was at Eden where Genai had been out to kill her, mainly because of Rizelle's death. The larger demon, Viede, had interrupted at some point and asked for both Chrno and Rosette to follow him though.

Genai heaved in some more deep breaths, his legs beginning to give in beneath him. All those years ago, he had been stripped off his horns so he could not be affected by Pandamonium when Pandamonium was brought up from the sea. But since then he had not gotten his horns back and as things stood now, he was without a contractor as well.

Rei grabbed onto Genai, swinging one of his arms over his own shoulders in order to support him. "C'mon hothead. We need to get you somewhere to rest."

Genai let out another huff. He didn't exactly want help but on the other hand he was too exhausted to protest by now.

Rosette and Satella shortly exchanged glances. Satella wasn't sure she approved of having en 'evil' Sinner on the team, and Rosette obviously had her reasons too. On the other hand, Rei was probably not going to let Genai go now, so it would probably either end with having both demons or no demons.

Kenny, who had been in hide to collect information and contact Ewan, now came running towards them; he had seen all the happenings from a further distance. "Guys! There are people on their way from the Hendric Foundation!"

Tyson looked shortly towards Kenny before looking back at Rei, "So, what do we do now?" he gave a short glance towards especially the large Pursuer body which was very visible.

"I guess we wait for the people at the Hendric Foundation to arrive here. Hopefully they have a more… less destructive way than we probably have to remove the corpses. And then we return to there." Rei answered.

Rei pushed the doors open to the room where he could find his friends. He had spend the last hour on convincing Genai to just get some goddamn rest and not wonder too much about where he was or what was going to happen. He had also needed to spend a bit of time talking to Ewan about who exactly Genai was and that he was going to join them now, no matter how many disliked it. He had also shortly been discussing with Ewan about an idea of how to collect Astral Energy to Genai, or else he'd be dead before long had passed.

Rosette looked up at Rei as he entered, "Are you absolutely sure it is a good idea to have Genai with us?"

"From my point of view, it's more logical he's with us than not." Rei answered, "Besides the fact that I still see him as an old friend, then it also goes as the old saying 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'."

Rosette rubbed her head, "Still… I can't exactly say I have any good experiences with him. And out from what he said back at the park when the Pursuers were defeated, I'm quite sure he still has an aggressive grudge against me for Rizelle's death when he figures who I am."

"I'll take care of him when it comes to that." Rei said as he sat down on a chair in the room. His eyes became half-lidded, "As much as I can see it from his point of view, I can definitely also see it from your point of view. Rizelle could have chosen other methods to approach you, but she chose the one she chose. That wasn't your fault."

"This Rizelle, was she a Sinner too?" Tyson asked carefully.

Both Rei and Rosette nodded. "She was."

Rosette's eyes became half-lidded as she thought back to what had happened back then. She narrowed her eyes slightly. All the people whom had suffered back then… She was pulled out of her thoughts though as a question pointed towards her, Satella and Rei were asked.

"… Is it always going to be like this?" Max, who had been looking down at the floor, slowly lifted his head to look at them, "I mean… Surely, we've been through training, but the first fight we saw with Rei and now this fight at the park… Is it normal for them to be like that?"

"It unfortunately is." Satella ran a hand through her hair. "Demons are incredible strong and backing down from a fight they definitely don't do."

Rei sighed deeply, "We were lucky with those we have encountered so far… The Pursuers which could have been sent after us could have been stronger and harder to fight than these."

Rosette nodded, "Remember the one demon I shot down? The bullet I used was a Gospel and I was actually surprised that the demon was taking down by it… Rizelle took quite a lot of damage back when I used the Gospel on her, but I remember using the Gospel on both Aion and Genai too where they were entirely unaffected by it.

Rei nudged his eyes, "Rizelle was a lower class demon compared to the rest of us. She was a strong fighter, but not that strong." He sighed.

"So what we shall expect is it will get worse and worse from here on." Kai stated from where he was leaning against the wall.

"Most likely…" Rei looked towards Kai.

"…" Tyson snorted, "Might be, but definitely not today!"

People blinked and looked towards Tyson, wondering why his voice suddenly sounded that much chirpier.

Tyson got to his feet, "We have gotten this far, lots of people here have a lot of things and we're going to continue surviving them! Though today I vote we don't get onto more fights and go get some food instead." He grinned and clapped his hands together.

Rosette was directly on her feet and punched the air, "I second that!"

In the next moment the two of them were gone to raid the kitchen.

"…" a short silence fell over the room as the people left in it looked towards the door which Rosette and Tyson had disappeared out of. They weren't stuck with only one food happy person by now; they were stuck with two. Soon small laughs emerged from the people within the room; whether it was fortunate or unfortunate was not to tell, but these two food happy people were probably also the most positive and it didn't hurt that much to have two of them in the group.

Slowly the rest of them exited the room to get something to eat as well. Though, with Tyson and Rosette on the rampage, the rest would probably have to order something from the outside.
