Heard about a place today
Nothing never hurts again
Sarah flitted about the grand ballroom, until she stopped at a golden pillar. Who else was there? Jareth of course. The King smiled at her, one of the rare genuine smiles she had ever seen.
"You look lovely." Jareth said softly.
He looked kinder, softer in this light. Despite, being upset with him a moment ago, Sarah found herself blushing, "Thanks."
He extended a hand to her. Sarah hesitated for a moment, what if, she fell under his spell again? 'No,' She thought, 'I could use this opportunity to pry some answers out of him.'
Sarah smiled brightly and away they flew.
Even though it seemed cliché they danced and Sarah could not be more thrilled. It felt as if, the ceiling was the floor.
"You said you were waiting in the dark for a long time, calling to me." The teen whispered.
"It was very lonely Sarah, being trapped in the body of that owl. I missed my kingdom, my subjects, my freedom, but that was not the worst part."
He's tone indicated that he wanted her to guess, when she did not he began speaking again in a softer tone.
"It killed me to be so close to you and yet, unable to speak, to touch….." He lowered his face dangerously close to hers. He trailed off and Sarah found herself almost pitying the king.
"Why were you following me?"
"I knew that only you could free me, you were the one who cast the spell in the first place."
Sarah paused and thought back to the tumultuous confrontation between them last time. 'Perhaps, I have powers here too.' She thought.
"Now, that you and I are back in the Underground, we can set things right. For my subjects, your friends, for us." The thin man said with a hopeful echo.
"I still don't trust you yet." Sarah stated shrewdly.
"Naturally," The Goblin King smiled, "But give it time, I can change your mind."
"Maybe, or maybe I'll turn you into a toad this time around." She stated confidently
"That's what I love about you Sarah, your tenacity." The Goblin King chuckled. He swept her up onto a raised platform in one quick gesture.
His separate colored eyes flashed with a feral excitement, "Are you ready Sarah?"
"Ready for what?" She said sleepily, still in a daze.
"The coronation." He said, as-a-matter-o-factly.
Sarah shook her head and snapped out of dream land. "Excuse me?!"
The extravagant Goblin King turned away from her to face the captive audience.
"May I have your attention. Now it is time for the moment we have all been waiting for!" A hoard of creatures and mystical-looking humans began to push their way to the stage.
Sarah tapped him fiercely on the shoulder and spat out her words, "Jareth, you said nothing about becoming queen of the Underground!"
"This was the trade off, your friends freedom for your own." He noticed her genuinely confused look and said coyly, "Oh I thought I told you about that part."
"I didn't…." but, Sarah never got to finish as she was hoisted off through the excited crowd.
"Now, for the coronation of our new queen!" To this the crowd cheered more exuberantly.
Sarah looked down at all of the smiling faces and felt power surge through her. Maybe, just maybe she could stay here. There were people that paid attention to her, they loved and adored her. Why go back? What did she have to go back to anyway? Her family certainly didn't care, they were more interested in Toby getting detention, again, than bothering to show up for her school play.
She also, did not have too many friends, Sarah was too busy imagining herself somewhere else to focus on the present. In this place she could be free, to be whatever she wanted. Was this what she really wanted?
The mask group set her down atop a silver throne. The room quieted down and the crowd gather at her feet. They all eagerly awaited her answer, looking up with shinning eyes. "This is all very kind, I would love to be your queen, I don't know if, I would make much of a queen."
To this they began to cheer for her, boosting her confidence.
"You are all too sweet, I just…." She turned to her left, looking at Jareth.
"Go on Sarah" He all but cooed, "It's now, or never."
She nodded, it was time to make her own choices from here on out. She took in a breath and…..
