The drive to my house had to have been one of the longest drives of my life. Granted I didn't drive much but still it was bloody long and bloody awkward. In past years, Hugo and I would fill my mum and dad in about quidditch and school while dad cracked jokes and mum asked specific questions relating to the various subjects. This was not past years. I sat in the back seat with Athena on my lap and stared out the window praying for the ride to be faster.
Finally we pulled up to our three-story brick house in the town of Godric's Hallows. Our lawn had the usual white picket fence and I spotted my tree in the backyard. I couldn't help but be relieved to be home. I got out the second the car stopped levitating both Hugo's and my trunks from our car. I walked inside and placed the trunks in our rooms. I came downstairs immediately regretting leaving the rest of my family…alone.
My dad stood with his hands in his jeans pockets looking at the ground as if he didn't know what he was doing here. My mum was writing a letter the quill making holes in the paper. Hugo was marching towards the other stairs in a tyrant.
"Hugo stop!" I yelled. I then walked over to my mum yanked the quill out of her hand earning a protest from her before announcing, "We are having a family dinner at five, I shall cook. Mum you are taking the day off work tomorrow." I held up my hand to stop her from protesting, "Dad you too," He nodded happily, "Hugo I believe you have something to discuss with dad before dinner. I will write to Uncle Harry and the Minister to inform them that you are both taking the day off. If I see either of you working on anything work related tomorrow Weasley Wizard's Weazes will get involved," I walked into the kitchen.
My mum followed me just as I expected, "My own daughter will not threaten me!"
I ignored her flipping through a cookbook, "Would you prefer chicken or pasta tonight?"
"Rose Arabella Weasley," My mother's tone was deadly but I knew how to play her game.
"Good idea, chicken parmesan with spaghetti sounds good that way we have both,"
"Why are you doing this?" My mum asked her voice changing from deadly to pleading.
"I want change," I whispered, "I want change for Hugo. I want change for dad. I want change for me. This is the last thing I can control in my life. The last thing I have a chance at making better. I want to take the chance,"
"Rose darling you were fine for seventeen years why, one day, does everything all of a sudden need to become different?" My mum begged to understand.
"I wasn't fine. Hugo and I are better actors then you give us credit for," I shrugged. I walked over to the cabinet pulling out the ingredients for the recipe. "It was sort of a built of tension that when you didn't visit me when I really needed the comfort and when you made Hugo think he was about to be disowned made me snap. I know that I need to take control of the situation now because no one else will," I walked back to the counter beginning to measure. I refused to look at my mum.
"You were unconscious why would we visit you then it would have been a waste of time." She tried to reason with me.
"What about when I was awake? There was a full week and a half before break,"
"You had your friends," My mums voice was quiet.
"They aren't you or dad. I could have gotten over that though and I almost did until Hugo told me about what you did to him," My voice turned cold and I began chopping the tomatoes forcefully. "Why didn't you reply? Tell him you didn't care? That you loved him anyway? Why didn't you tell him that you guys would discuss the matter when he got home? Instead of making him think you fucking disowned him? He almost didn't come home for Christmas because he thought you hated him!"
I looked down at the mess I had made of the tomato. "Bloody hell," I muttered grabbing a new tomato.
"Let me," My mum offered. I shrugged sinking against the counter.
"I didn't reply because I was ashamed that I hadn't noticed. I thought I had been a bad mother for not noticing that my son was gay. Then when he confirmed it was him in the picture kissing Neville's son I didn't know what to say. I knew I still loved him. I just didn't know what to write. I kept putting off replying until before I knew it, it had been three weeks,"
"I'm writing to the Uncle Harry and the minister," I walked out rubbing my temples my headache hadn't gone away yet if anything it was becoming worse. I pulled two spare pieces of parchment out and a quill.
Dear Uncle Harry,
My father will not be able to come into work tomorrow. We are having a family day. There has been some tension in the house that needs to get settled so I am forcing everyone including my dad to stay home therefore unless there is some major mission please do not call on him for Hugo's sake. By the way, you won't be able to communicate with him. I will put aside all letters from known aurors for the day. Also, I think it would be good for Scorpius and I to talk with you at Teddy's wedding a lot's happened this year and we should review the plan. Anyway, my dad won't be at the office tomorrow.
Your niece,
Rose
I wrote the next letter to my Mum's boss, the Minister of Magic. She worked directly below him as an associate who protected the rights of house elves, muggle-borns, goblins, centaurs, and giants essentially anyone who was discriminated against.
Dear Minister Bonehart,
I would kindly like to inform you that Hermione Weasley will be taking a personal day with her family tomorrow. If you need to communicate with Mrs. Weasley please send an owl to her home addressed to her daughter, Rose Weasley, due to all communication with everyone else in the home being cut off for the day of December 18th. If you have any questions or need to communicate with Mrs. Weasley please owl me, Rose Weasley, at 492 Godrics Hollows. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Rose Weasley
I laughed. My mum was going to kill me. I quickly sent out Athena with both letters before heading back into the kitchen to finish dinner. On my way I saw my dad and Hugo playing wizards chess. I raised an eyebrow at Hugo who when my dad's back was turned gave me a thumbs up. I was glad something went well today.
When I arrived in the kitchen I was surprised to see dinner well under way. Mum had definitely used magic. I had been planning on cooking without it but now that she's started what the hell.
We cooked in silence until dinner was finally ready. "Hugo, Dad dinner!" I called to them. They were in the middle of another wizard's chess game. This wasn't exactly surprising because ever since Hugo acquired the ability to beat my dad two years ago they play nonstop. My dad had never lost before that.
"Checkmate!" Hugo called standing up.
"What?" My dad cried, "Fine I give up. I'm just glad it's my son who's beating me not some dimwitted bimbo stranger."
"Thanks?" Hugo questioned the compliment. My dad waved it off as they walked over to the table.
I placed the meal in front of everyone and sat down bracing myself to be a peacemaker. I knew I would have to be because that wasn't exactly my father's specialty. "This is great Rosie!" Dad praised.
"Thanks mum helped too,"
"Great job 'Mione what do you think Hugo?" Dad was better at this then I thought.
"Its fantastic Rose," After a glare from me, "and mum,"
"Thank you Hugo but please don't just say things because your sister is forcing you too we're all family. We are allowed to speak with an open mind," My mum had just opened the way for a long, tense dinner.
"In that case I don't believe that you helped because I think you were probably writing some letter to some lawyer stating the laws that random creatures have," Hugo scooped a piece of pasta into his mouth definitively.
"In case you have forgotten I also help muggle-borns like myself. In case you have forgotten your sister is helping me protect them too." When did I get brought into this? "In case you have forgotten I am helping poor little creatures who can't help themselves!"
"Mum I understand how important your field is. I get it. I just want more family time. Not to mention that when I'm at Hogwarts you can work as long as you want but when I'm home I want to see you," Hugo sighed.
"I know Hugo I'm sorry,"
I was still curious about why I mattered in her tyrant, "When did I begin helping you?"
"You marrying Scorpius in a way is protecting muggle-borns. It's stopping a war over them," My mum explained. I had never realized why she had pushed for me to do it. For her work.
"So you want me to marry Scorpius so more people will vote on a law?" I clarified my voice turning hard.
"No Rose," She realized her mistake too late, "I want it to stop the war. Save lives. The laws are bonuses,"
I shook my head at her, "It doesn't matter anyway, I'm going to marry him so you'll have your laws sooner or later." I paused calming myself, "Hugo we should invite the Longbottoms over for dinner soon. What do you say?"
I did what I did best- avoid the problem. This almost always led to a bigger problem later on but I hated confrontation. Hugo stared at me for a moment before following along, "That would be great. Frank's one of my best friends and of course I like seeing Uncle Neville despite the fact that I see him almost year round."
"I could turn in my essay to him too since I didn't get the chance before leaving. What do you guys say would you like to have them over?"
"I would love to. I haven't seen Longbottom in ages," Dad laughed, "I'll owl him tomorrow seeing what day works for him,"
The rest of dinner passed by tensely and uneventfully. Hugo and I caught mum and dad up on the school year until we all called it a night at eight thirty. Eight thirty. I don't remember ever going to bed this early even when I was younger so I lay in bed until I finally realized how pathetic that was, just lying there, and began writing a letter.
I probably won't be updating for awhile like a long while because of school…I hate school but as soon as that's done you get me all to yourselves:) Anyway review, favorite, and follow!
