Sirius jumped when James tapped him on the shoulder the next morning.
"What's up, Padfoot? You seem.. Tense." James said.
Sirius looked at James as if he were mental. "Are you kidding me?! Am I the only one out of the both of us that is actually sweating over this Evelyn revenge thing?"
James blinked in surprise. "Oh, well I kind of forgot about that..." James trailed off but then saw the look on Sirius's face. "But we shouldn't live our lives in fear!" James said loudly while waving his hand around as if he were using a sword in battle.
James lowered his arm then laughed. "Do you really think Evelyn will do anything? Ha! Come on, Padfoot. This is Evelyn we're talking about." James spoke slowly as if talking to a child.
"She's different now." Sirius defensively.
James shook his head. "It's only her appearance, you moron. Get your head straight."
Sirius sighed. "I guess you're right."
James smiled then patted him on the back. "You'll come around." James said as they turned the corner to the defence classroom.
"Huh," Evelyn leaned against the wall in the hallway James and Sirius just left. "Lily? What do you think of this?"
Lily walked up to Evelyn and stood beside her. Lily smirked. "Sweet, sweet revenge."
"Oh, yes."
"You have got to be kidding me!" Evelyn whined as she stared at the poster in the hallway.
"Hm?" Lily wasn't really paying attention.
"Dumbledore is hosting a fall dance!" Evelyn screeched. Lily covered her ears and Evelyn noticed. "Oh, sorry." She said sheepishly.
Lily waved it off. "So what's so wrong with a dance?"
Evelyn gritted her teeth. "Well Lily, I don't know if you remember this but the last time I was at a Hogwarts dance I found Sirius and Walker exchanging spit in the girls bathroom. So I hope you don't mind if I have some problems with dances." Evelyn said then walked away.
"Since when did she get so stubborn." Lily grumbled then grabbed at the poster and crumpled it in her hand. She threw the ball of paper across the hall and followed after Evelyn.
Evelyn walked into the school library and sat down at the nearest table. She felt bad for yelling at Lily but all of the resentment from that night came back to her and her mind went back to Lily being the enemy.
Evelyn reached into her bag and took out her homework. She had defence homework. She hated defence but at the same time, she wanted to be good at it. To show people that she was worth something, that she could protect herself and to show the marauders that she was strong.
"Need help?"
Evelyn looked up to see a small, petite girl standing in front of her.
She had the most gorgeous hair that fell in honey golden ringlets and the most innocent looking face, but that was about the only innocent-looking part about her.
She had three piercings in her right earlobe, two in her left and one piercing on her left eyebrow. The girl was wearing light makeup and had multiple string bracelets on both of her arms. Attached to her thigh was a small belt that held her wand in place. Her eyes were a shade of grey that reminded Evelyn of storm clouds. If you didn't pay attention to her size or face, she looked pretty intimidating. The tie around her neck was loose as if she had been pulling at it the whole day. It was green. Slytherin.
Evelyn evaluated the girl carefully. She was smiling softly at Evelyn. She gave in.
"If you could spare a little time." Evelyn said half jokingly, half pleading. The girl looked pleasantly surprised and relieved. She sat down in front of Evelyn.
"I really like helping people out with homework and it's usually the Griffindors that look like they need help. Ravenclaws obviously don't need the help, Hufflepuffs usually work in groups and work it out on their own. Of course, the Slytherins are just to proud to accept help. But usually the Griffindors won't accept my help anyway. I think it's because of this." The girl held up her green tie.
Evelyn pondered this for a second. "Maybe. But also, your appearance can look a bit intimidating even though your face looks cute and innocent." Evelyn said honestly.
The girl smiled. "Maybe that too. But I really like these piercings and I don't care what most people think of me." She said with a shrug, then held out her hand to Evelyn. "I'm Catherine, by the way. Catherine Haley. Cath for short."
Evelyn tensed. The Haley's were almost as pure as her own family. "I'm Evelyn-"
"Reeves, I know. You're that girl that ran away from your family." Catherine said without emotion. She dropped her extended hand when she noticed that Evelyn wasn't making any moves to take it.
Evelyn closed her eyes waiting for the blow, but it never came.
"Congrats."
Evelyn looked up to see Catherine looking at her with a bit of admiration. "I don't believe in my family's beliefs about blood but I wouldn't be brave enough as to actually do something about it."
Evelyn smiled but before she could say anything, Catherine spoke. "So, defence?"
"Lily?"
Lily turned and looked around to see who had called her. Her eyes landed on a dark figure in the shadows and her eyes hardened.
"Oh, it's you." Lily said with venom in her voice. The boy flinched.
"Just talk to me!" He pleaded.
"Like I would ever give you the light of day, Snape." Lily spat. Snape recoiled back.
"But-"
"Shouldn't you go find your friends? Don't want to get caught with the mudblood." She taunted. Snape looked hurt.
"Look, I said I was sorry!"
"For Merlin's sake, will you-"
"Lily-flower!" James sprinted through the hall and stood in between Lily and Snape, with the rest of the Marauders following behind. James's eyes narrowed in Snape's direction.
"Snivellus. What do you want?" James growled. Snape glared back.
"I'm talking to Lily." Snape retorted.
"Evans," Lily cut in, glaring at Snape. "It's Evans to you."
Snape flinched back, hurt, then he regained his composure.
"Well, I'll be leaving now." Snape announced and turned on his feet.
"Not so fast there." James called out while Sirius went up to Snape and lazily held his wand up to Snape's neck. Remus sat on the ground and looked up at all of them as if it were a boring tv show while Peter sat beside him looking extremely excited.
"Where do you think you're going?" Sirius drawled with a lazy grin.
"Leaving." Snape growled.
James shook his head. "That's not going to work for us. Padfoot?"
"Nope, it won't. Here, let's try something new with you this time." Sirius replied.
"Don't you dare do anything to him!" Lily screamed.
James looked towards her with a confused expression and motioned for Sirius to pause. "I thought you hated him." He said.
"Not as much as you." She growled. "I hate how you think you're all that. I hate how you think you can go around threatening people to do your biddings. It's you I hate! Not Snape!" Lily yelled, her voice echoing in the hall.
They were all supposed to be in class so the halls were empty but it seemed that no one cared much.
James expression turned into one of anger, but not at Lily. He swirled around to face Snape. "You. It's all your fault she hates me! Do it, Pads!"
Sirius nodded then opened his mouth to recite an incantation but was cut off by a wand pointed at his throat.
"I'm afraid I can't let you do that."
Everyone turned to see a small, Slytherin girl glaring at Sirius with her wand at his throat. Behind her stood Evelyn with the most enraged expression anyone has ever seen on her.
Wha- Cath?!" Sirius sputtered. Snape took this moment to get away and ran in the direction of the Slytherin common room. No one noticed.
Catherine's grey eyes flashed and a moment later, Sirius was on the ground groaning in pain.
"Don't you dare call me that again. You're nothing but a piece of scum. First you have to break me into a million pieces with this 'conquest' thing, me being number 67." Evelyn's eyes went wide at that as well as Lily and the rest of the Marauders aside from Sirius.
"Then," Catherine continued. "You have to hurt the sweetest, kindest girl I've ever met as well? Oh, you are dead!" She yelled.
Sirius slowly got up, wincing, and towered over Catherine when he reached full height but she didn't even blink.
"Oh yeah? What are you going to do about it?" Sirius teased with his wand in his hand, casually pointing it at Catherine. The rest of the Marauders were in too much shock at seeing Catherine for the first time in two years.
Catherine waved her wand again and Sirius yelled in pain then dropped his wand.
"Watch it. Evelyn, come on. And bring your friend." She said gesturing in Lily's direction.
Evelyn nodded and grabbed Lily's hand and they all walked toward the library.
"Remind me why I broke up with her again?" Sirius asked curiously.
"Because she was too violent for your liking and you started pining over Dianna Helladore. Oh, and also, you didn't like the fact that she could beat you in every duels." Remus said while fiddling with his tie.
Peter looked up at Sirius curiously. "You're not going to go after her again, are you? What about Evelyn? You'll hurt her."
Sirius waved it off. "Of course not."
James sighed in relief. "Well good, because she was too weird for us."
Sirius stared at James for a moment.
"Right."
