Maura let's Jane sleep in her room again, but she wouldn't dare join her. That's why she's awake at 3 am when her best friend wakes up screaming. She puts down the book that she's reading and races up the stairs to her room and flicks on the light. Jane is sat up, she's sweating and she's scared. The honey blonde joins her on the bed placing a reassuring hand on her back. "Hey, it's alright Jane; you're in my room, in my house." Jane's breathing is heavy, and Maura wants nothing more than to soothe her and calm her down. Last time Jane had a nightmare like this was back when Hoyt attacked the both of them, Jane was awake every night for weeks because of what had happened. Maura shifts so she can look at Jane, her eyes are empty, completely devoid of emotion. This is bad. "Jane, do you want to come downstairs for a while?" No response. "Jane, you're scaring me, please say something."
"I saw him..." She whispers.
"Who? Casey? Jane it was just a dream he can't hurt you anymore, it's only me here."
"And Hoyt."
"Oh Jane." She sighs. "Go back to sleep, I'll stay here. We'll talk about it tomorrow, okay? Right now you need to rest." She nods in response. Maura sits up and starts to stroke Jane's hair so that she'll fall asleep. "I'm right here Jane, go back to sleep." So she does, Jane falls asleep with her head in Maura's lap.
Maura waits and watches as the hours tick by and morning draws in. She needs coffee but doesn't dare to go and make herself a cup for fear Jane will wake, or even worse wake up while she's gone. Therefore she sits and waits until Jane finally wakes up at 8:12am. "Morning."
"Did you sleep?"
"No, but you seemed to sleep pretty well."
"Thank you for staying with me Maur."
"You're welcome Jane, but let's go and get some coffee first." Both women head downstairs and Maura starts up her espresso machine.
"Maura why can't you just make normal coffee."
"Well, the…"
"No, it's too early for that, forget I asked."
"Well it's not possible for me to simply 'forget' Jane, you know that." The pair are interrupted by the sound of Maura's phone ringing. "Doctor Isles. Yes, of course. I'll authorize that. I'd like to come in, so call me once the initial exam is done. I'm sure that he is. Yes I know it's standard but I'd still like to be there. I'll only be observing, not assisting. Thank you, bye." Maura places her phone back on the counter before grabbing a bag of coffee beans. "Sorry, student just out of med. school is starting and although the initial exam looks like a suicide I'd like to go in just to make sure that he doesn't mess up because he's eager to prove himself."
"Of course, I understand." Jane pours the hot water into her mug and takes a sip of her coffee.
"We still have time to talk about what happened last night Jane, matter of fact I'm not leaving until we do."
"Maura, I'm okay… really I am." Jane sits on the couch and cradles her mug of coffee in her hands.
"Jane, I don't care what you say, what happened last night. That's not okay."
"I'm scared." She admits quietly.
"He's gone Jane, they both are. They can't hurt you anymore." Maura says as she joins her friend on the couch.
"I'm not scared for me."
"I'm not sure I follow what you're saying." Maura sets her espresso on the table before taking Jane's mug out of her hands and placing it next to hers. She takes her friends hands and taps her chin, forcing her to look up at her.
"I'm scared for you. I'm always scared that someone is going to hurt you Maur."
"Jane, you don't need to worry about me. I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myse-" Maura's phone chimes. "Doctor Isles. Hello sergeant Korsak. His family. Yeah, she's here." She pauses, before agreeing. "Of course I'll ask her. Hold on." She covers up the microphone before addressing Jane. "It's Casey's family. They want his body transported back to England for burial. You were his wife, they want to ask you if you're alright with that."
"Yeah, sure. They can take care of the ceremony. That's fine."
"She says they can take him back. Yes she's sure." Maura stands and moves into the hallway. "Dealing with the funeral is hard, and a lot of work. Yes, she knows. We all support her. Goodbye sergeant." She makes her way back to the sofa and picks up her coffee before sitting down.
"This is good."
"You're sure."
"Yes I am. I'll be rid of him, once and for all."
"Okay. Do you think this will help?"
"With?"
"Your nightmares."
"I don't know, I guess we'll have to see."
"Jane, I'll do anything that I can to help stop them."
"Anything."
"For you, of course."
"Do you think that it's too soon for me to move on?"
"No, you deserve to be happy. He's never coming back, so move on Jane. I think that this will be good for you." I love you, if only you knew.
"Thanks Maur." She shifts slightly closer to Maura before the ringing of her phone causes Maura to stand.
"Yes, I'm on my way." Maura grabs her bag and coat. "I'll see you later Jane."
"Yeah… Bye." Maura walks out of the door and speed off to the morgue.
A/N: Firstly THANK YOU to the people who left me some lovely reviews last chapter, it really means a lot.
Secondly I'm heading back to school next week so updates will hopefully be more regular, but maybe not as often (maybe fortnightly but I'll try and get them done faster.) hopefully these are getting longer... I think I'll end this soon though, and publish a sequel?
QotC: Sequel? or nah?
