The Earth's Possession

Chapter 10: Gaea's Move

HAZEL

Hazel stared at her feet. She couldn't bear to look at her friends' faces after that little stunt that Nico pulled. True, she wasn't his actual sister, but when he hadn't been possessed, he had treated her like one. She wondered if Bianca di Angelo was treated the same way but immediately brushed aside the thought. There was no way Nico was treating her like a replacement, right? Nervously, she looked up at her friends. Percy's eyes were stormy, like the time when he told them that Nico had been possessed. Annabeth's expression mirrored her boyfriend's. However, with her gray eyes, it just made the expression that much more terrifying. Leo's face was still pale from having that knife thrown back at him, his eyes wide in bewilderment. Frank was still standing frozen in the spot he had been in when Nico had unleashed Fear. He wasn't a cheetah anymore, but he didn't look any less scared. Hazel walked over.

"Hey, Frank. It's ok. Nico's gone now. Can you hear me?" Hazel asked. Frank slowly turned his head to face her. Suddenly, Hazel was embraced by strong arms.

"Hazel. You have no idea... being an animal and experiencing that... it's like being a rabbit and having a pride of starving lions surround you. Gods, I-" Hazel cut him short with a kiss.

"It's ok. It's over now," she said as she got back up. "I'm going to check on Jason. Can you guys fix this place up?" Leo managed a weak grin and wave.

"Yeah, I got this. You go check on Jason. Annabeth, Percy can you help me move the tables and chairs back?" The two nodded and started to rearrange the furniture as Hazel walked out with Frank following behind her.

FRANK

Frank stood outside the infirmary, unsure of whether or not to knock on the door. Hazel tapped on his shoulder.

"What's wrong?" she asked. Frank turned around and forced a smile.

"It's nothing," he said as he knocked. The truth was, it was far from nothing. He didn't want to admit it, especially not to Hazel, but even now, Nico di Angelo's Fear had scared him more than he wanted to share. Nobody would understand. Even with Hazel's comforting words earlier, he doubted that she knew the full extent of what that technique could do to somebody, even as a child of Pluto. Besides, to risk being laughed at by Leo Valdez? No thank you. He doubted that this was something he would get over in the next little while. He turned back to the door. "Why aren't they answering?" Hazel looked at the door.

"Maybe they didn't hear you knock? Try again," she prompted. Frank knocked again but still received no answer. Frank furrowed his eyebrows. He shared a look with Hazel, who nodded. Frank backed up and charged at the door. With the door broken down, the two could see what happened in the room. Medical supplies were flung everywhere. Rubbing alcohol containers were open, spilling its contents onto the floor. The covers on the bed were a mess and the window was smashed through. Drops of blood were on the floor near the window. Frank frowned.

"Well this is a problem."

LEO

Leo was upset. He thought he had every right to be upset though. The ship's dining room was a mess, the infirmary was also a mess and two of his best friends were missing. Typical. The gods just aren't a big fan of me, are they, he thought. He tried his best to look calm, even if on the inside, he was absolutely furious. Right now, they had to think calmly, that much he knew. If they wanted to get Piper and Jason back, they needed a rational plan. Leo clenched his fists. An ADHD demigod coming up with a rational plan? That actually sounded pretty impossible, especially since he wasn't Annabeth. A voice broke him out of his self-pitying.

"Umm… Leo? Your fists are smoking and your pants are on fire," Percy said. Leo looked down and shrieked a very manly shriek. He looked up at Percy with somewhat of a pleading look. Thankfully, Percy understood and doused him before he could showcase his boxers.

"So what do we do now? Gaea probably has them and who knows what she wants to do with them," he said.

"Hey guys, do you think that she could make Piper and Jason her soldiers, just like she did with Nico di Angelo?" Frank asked. THAT killed the mood almost immediately. Frank looked a little sheepish. "Sorry." Annabeth sighed.

"He's right though. We need to factor in this possibility. If she does take control of Jason and Piper, how are we going to fight her?" she asked. Percy furrowed his eyebrows.

"I could probably fight Jason. I mean, I'd try not to hurt him, but I could definitely hold him off and buy time for you guys to do something," he stated.

"I could probably fight Piper too," Hazel put in, "I think she and I have about the same skill with a knife or a spatha."

"That leaves Frank, Annabeth and I to do something while you guys are holding them off then. But what?" Leo asked. Suddenly, the ship lurched forward.

"Gods, what was THAT?" Annabeth asked. But Leo was already out the door to check out what had happened.

ANNABETH

Annabeth raced after Leo. What had caused that sudden lurch? Was it an enemy? Or was it just something that had malfunctioned in the ship? Watching Leo run into the engine room, she ran to the front deck. Out in the middle of the deck, were two giants. One held a white flag on a pole while the other seemed to be unarmed. She narrowed her eyes. What were giants doing on the ship? A better question, how did they get on the ship? They were flying at 15,000ft! Hearing the others come up behind her, she stepped to the side, cautiously, watching for any sudden movements from the giants. There were none. She turned to the group.

"What do we do? They have a white flag, but who knows if we can trust them," she said. Hazel looked at the giants and then back at the group.

"We could always send two people to see what they want," she suggested. Annabeth raised her eyebrows.

"Are you offering?" she asked. Hazel blushed and shook her head. Frank raised his hand.

"I'll go," he offered. Annabeth nodded.

"I'll go too. If it looks like they're going to do something violent, attack them," she instructed the group. With the consensus, the two ambassadors walked up to meet the giants.

Upon arrival, the giant with the flag grinned and nudged his companion.

"Ah. It's about time one of you came up. Let me introduce myself, I'm Ephialtes and this is my brother Otis," the giant without the flag said. Annabeth's hand crept towards her knife and she saw Frank do the same with his sword. Ephialtes seemed to notice and said, "Calm down, demigods. We're only here to deliver a message. Now take the envelope and let us leave," Ephialtes yawned. Annabeth's eyes narrowed again as she cautiously took said envelope and backed up and motioned for Frank to do the same. Ephialtes grinned and snapped his fingers. The two giants dissolved into dust and were carried off by the wind.

Walking back to the group, Annabeth's fingers trembled as she held onto the envelope. To have Jason and Piper kidnapped and then to receive a letter from the enemy? It seemed to be too much of a coincidence. Percy walked up to her and asked,

"So what did they want?" Annabeth simply showed him the letter. Percy took it from her. By then, Leo had come back from the engine room. Everyone could hear what the letter said. Percy opened it and began to read.

PERCY

The first thing Percy noticed about the letter was that it was written in blood-red ink. Hopefully, it wasn't actually anybody's blood. Swallowing the lump in his throat, he read the contents of the letter aloud.

My dear demigods,

It would seem that you left two of your own unguarded. They are with one of my allies. Fear not, they won't be turned mindless slaves like Nico. However, if you want to save them, you should probably hurry as they may not last very long.

Yours truly,

Gaea
