Black Out
Is he mad at me? I quickly flipped my pink phone open for the 100th time in the past hour. He's got to be mad at me! It was noon as the setting orange sun filled my room. I paced from my closet to my messy bed constantly flipping my phone up and down in a nervous manner.
PING…PING…
Makoto? My emerald eyes brightened up as the white screen shown on my anxious face. I opened up the phone with the hopes of it being the final time only to be sadly disappointed. My tongue made a clicking sound as I tugged on my navy black bangs. I plopped on my bed with a sigh and laid out holding my phone above my face.
"Oh it's just Haru…"
Haru: I found a new recipe for Mackerel. Would you like to come over and try it?
Me: EW! Haru, you know I hate Mackerel.
Haru: Mackerel hates you to then…
"Tsk well then." I tossed my phone at my baby pink pillow case. The weekend flew by and it was already Sunday afternoon. "Mom sure has been working hard all weekend." My mind was on overload trying to think of reasons why Makoto wouldn't pick up the phone. He's usually good at replying back. "Ugh this is killing me!" I said as I thudded around my bed screaming into the sheets. Hmm maybe Ko knows something…. I then reached over and grabbed my phone.
Me: Hey would you happen to have Makoto's address?
In no time flat my ringer went off. Does she have the phone glued to her hand?
Ko: Yes! You going to pay him a visit?
Me: Yea. I got to ask him something.
With that Ko texted me his address along with a bunch of hearts and kissy faces. My right eye began to twitch as this while my stomach flipped on itself with butterflies.
"Baka! Don't get the wrong idea." I muttered. I stood up and smoothed out my navy black hair in the mirror. It was sticking up on all sides due to rolling around in bed. I walked on over to my closet afterward and slipped into black shorts that matched well with a pink ruffled top I had. With my phone in hand. I padded over to the front of the house where my pink sandals were. I placed my hand on the nob while closing my eyes momentarily. I flashed them open as a look of determination crossed my face.
"Ok! Let's go get things cleared up!" I said aloud trying to hype myself up.
….
I could feel my soul slowly starting to flow out of my body as my hand rested on his door. My face tightened as my eyes down casted. All the nerve I had coming on the way here has vanished. My breath shortened as it became hard to swallow. My fist curled into a ball ready to knock. My arm shook while I could feel my legs starting to give out on me. Why is this so hard? Why does he make me feel this way? I don't want to feel weak… Makoto is a very important friend that I just can't lose. So what if he didn't want to be friends anymore? What do I do then? Maybe I'm just over thinking things again… His house appeared like a mixture of a Japanese styled home with sliding doors mixed with some western designs. The front was decorated with vibrant flowers of different kinds. I walked away from the door slowly and walked over to the tulips on the side of the house. I bent down and smelled one. The aroma brought a smile to my face and calmed my nerves. The front door flew open which made me jump up. Out ran a little boy with milk chocolate brown hair in the style of a bowl cut. He wore a green hoodie with tan shorts that went below the knee. He stopped upon noticing me. His light brown eyes stared up at me as a look of wonder shown on his face.
"Wow a pretty girl!" The boy said starry eyed with his mouth agape. He ran over and hugged my legs. I couldn't help but smile and ruffle the boy's hair.
"Well hello there I'm Mizuki."
"I'm Ren!" He bounced up and down while saying this. Just then a beautiful women came out of the house calling after Ren.
"Ren I told you to wait inside for me." She walked over toward us. My mouth dropped seeing how much Makoto resembled his mother. She wore a white shirt with a pink polo over it, and a long white flowing skirt. "Oh I'm sorry was he bothering you?" She asked smiling the same warm smile Makoto had.
"No not at all." I said nervously while waving my right hand back and forth in front of my face. "Um I'm here to see Makoto. Is he here?" I dropped my hand down and looked at her shyly.
"Yes, he's right inside. Please make yourself at home dear." She paused and turned her attention toward her son that was still wrapped around my legs. "As for you! It's time to go on that errand with me." Ren let out a slight protesting moan, but silently followed his mother out to the street. The warmth of his body faded from my legs as the cold began to set in with the clouds rolling in.
"Thank you!" I called as they turned the corner. The door was left opened for me. This time there was no turning back. I walked over to the entrance with each step my heart leapt into my throat causing me to swallow it back down. The sweet scent of his house enveloped me as I walked inside. The house was brightly lit and toys were scattered here and there on the wooden floor. I looked up the dark staircase to hear some faint music playing from one of the rooms. I made my way deeper into the house hoping to run into him.
"Makoto your girlfriend is here." A small high pitched voice called from behind. Startled I nearly jumped out of my skin as I turned to face where the voice was coming from. She had dark brown hair that rested just below her shoulders. Wearing an orange sweater with jean shorts her bare feet padded the wooden floor while she approached me. "What's your name?" She asked as she folded her arms together. Her bright gray eyes fixed on me.
"Um Mizuki." She giggled then grabbed my hand and started running upstairs dragging me along. I looked at the stairs with each rapid step I took trying not to miss and fall. My face turned red as I began to breathe hard as we reached the top.
"Wow what a pretty name! I'll take you to my brother." Oh crap! I'm not ready for this! I'm not mentally prepared to enter a boy's room… "Makoto!" She called stopping in front of his door.
"Yes?" I heard him call from the other side of the door. My body froze and the hairs stood up at the back of my neck. My heart hit my chest with a thud as his voice rung clear in my ears.
"I have a present for you! Open the door." She giggled and flashed me a cheeky grin. While backing up from the door she ran passed me and gave me thumbs up before disappearing downstairs. I swallowed hard as I heard footsteps approach the door.
"And what could that be?" He said thinking he was still talking to Ran. The door opened with a creak to reveal a shitless Makoto drying off his damp brown hair with a towel. 'Shit….' Was all I could think of as our eyes met and an instant burning sensation attacked my cheeks. He looked shocked to see me yet a smile spread on his lips. He stepped aside and gestured for me to come inside. I nodded quickly then entered. His room didn't have much to it just a wooden desk that was accompanied by a chair. A laptop sat neatly on top of his desk along with a few school books, framed pictures, and a bag of white rice. His bed was draped with black sheets along the right side of the room. The closet door was slightly opened to reveal his school uniform, and the windows shown in the beautiful setting sun over the ocean as it began to rain lightly. I slowly walked further into his room when he closed the door behind us which made me even more nervous.
"I guess you got a crappy present." I said with a nervous laugh.
"You can sit on my bed." He stated as he pulled out his wooden chair and sat in it. I quickly sat down on the bed only to be sunken in by the soft mattress. I tried to find the words that I lost on the way up here. "So what brings you here?" He asked. I breathed, then looked up at him trying to ignore the fact that he had a perfectly sculpted back. He then slipped on a gray tank top to go with his black sweat pants. I clenched my shorts deciding to just be blunt about it.
"Are you mad at me?" His eyes widened to my question as he spun around so fast he almost lost his balance.
"Huh?" He asked as he caught himself.
"You're usually really good with replying back. I've been trying to get ahold of you all weekend. I just kind of connected the dots remembering that on Friday you left practice abruptly after Ko mentioned Rin and I." This was seriously so embarrassing that my eyes started to water.
"Crap my phone!" He sat up quickly then made his way over to the bag of rice that sat on top of his desk. He opened up the bag and slowly pulled out his phone trying not to spill any rice. Makoto flipped his phone open, then pressed and held down the power button casting a white light on his anxious face. "Thank God it works!" I looked at him with a puzzled look. He sighed then began to explain. "I went over to Haru's Friday night to help him test out new recipes for mackerel. I felt guilty for the way I acted toward you after hearing about you and Rin…. So I tried calling you to apologize. That was when Haru bumped into me and my phone fell from my hand into the sink full of water." My mouth formed an O as he then rubbed the back of his neck. "I was going to talk to you about it tomorrow, but I guess you beat me to it." He laughed nervously.
"I'm sorry. I just assumed…"
"Why are you sorry? I'm the one who acted like a jerk." He finished. A flicker of pain crossed his angelic face and set into his warm green eyes. "How was your date with Rin?" I studied him for a moment, Could he be jealous? Nah… Impossible.
"It wasn't a date." I said reassuringly. His eyes found mine then asked.
"Then why did you-."
"I just helped him talk something out." His face softened and his mouth began to form a word when the lights began to flicker. The rain that was trickling moments ago now began to pour down. We both turned our attention to outside. The flickering ceased and with that the lights went out.
"EKKKKK!" I could have sworn a girl screamed. Makoto leapt toward me, which caused me to fall on my back and him on top of me. His lips were inches away from mine as our breaths intertwined. Makoto had me pinned to the bed with his hands firmly gripped on my wrists. Our heart beats seemed to echo in my ears as our eyes held one another's gently.
