I dragged my feet as I moved slowly down the short hall into the kitchen. Mechanically I followed the routine of getting dinner ready. Since I hadn't had time to go shopping with everything that had happened the only things in the fridge were a half packet of bacon and a dozen eggs. Pizza crossed my mind but I decided I didn't want to put in the effort.
I grabbed the carton of eggs and bacon and placed them on the counter. I was just going through the motions as I started to think about everything that had transpired. When I first met Edward I had learned to expect the unexpected, in this case was being forced into another dimension where everything is wrong. The good guys are the bad guys, bad guys are good, biology teachers have some tie to vampires and my best friend seems to be an asshole.
I grabbed the largest skillet I could find, I placed it on the stove over medium heat and waited. I was so lost in my thoughts that when the front door slammed shut I dropped the whole carton of eggs I was brining over, causing a massive eggy mess. I sighed, but heard Charlie laughing as he entered the kitchen. His expression was happy, but I could see in his posture that he was exhausted and stressed.
"You don't have to cook, Bells." He slipped off his shoes and took of his belt, hanging up his gun. He stepped in the kitchen, avoiding the mess and picked up he phone. "What kind of pizza do you like?" I turned the heat off from under the skillet and tried my best to smile at him.
"Whatever you like is fine with me, Dad." Through my best efforts I still sounded distracted, but Charlie didn't seem to notice. He greeted whoever was on the other end like an old friend and quickly launched into his order. His voice followed me down the hall as I walked to retrieve a towel. I grabbed the oldest and grubbiest one I could find, not wanting to ruin a perfectly good one. I shut the linen door and jumped for the second time within ten minutes.
"You look like a mess." Jacob grumbled. His black hair dripped with water that hit the wooden floor like ice. His chest was bare, but showed no signs of the dripping water.
Annoyed I pushed past him and headed back to the kitchen to clean up my mess. He moved stealthy behind me, making very little noise as he walked. More noise then usual, I guess so as not to startle me again. I imagined his eyes alight with amusement and grew more annoyed.
As I entered the kitchen Charlie was just finishing up his phone call. He seemed brighter then before, whoever worked at the pizza parlor obviously put him in a better mood.
"Thirty minutes till the pizza gets here. Hope you like meat lovers!" He was enthusiastic and I began to feel like it might be a calm evening. When I smiled at him it felt more genuine. He walked past the mess and nodded at Jacob. I heard the TV in the living room come to life and the voice of some new caster talking excitedly about some goal.
I bent down and picked up the soggy carton, a few egg shells fell out and smashed on the linoleum, while the rest stayed in place.
"Hey?" With great effort I turned around to look at Jacob. I was surprised to find none of his usual cockiness in his face or stance. "I'm sorry, about today." I just turned back to the mess. I picked up as many as the fragments of shell as I could and placed them in the carton. There was a short, uncomfortable silence before he spoke again. "Vampires have killed people in my tribe, my friends, my father." There was undeniable hate in his voice and I began to feel guilty about my previous attitude towards him.
"I can't relax or let me guard down around one. Ever." He emphasized the last word.
I told him it was okay, not in the mood to talk. I finished cleaning up the mess, grabbing a plastic bag and tossing the egg soaked rag and the carton inside before tying it up and tossing it in the trash can. When I turned towards the sink to wash my hands Jacob was gone. I signed I left the kitchen and made my way up stairs. I was about to open my door when Charlie emerged from his room.
He'd changed from his police uniform into something more comfortable. "I didn't have time to get someone around to fix your window." He was looking a little guilty. "I'll get someone here tomorrow to take a look at it." I smiled and was about to let him know it was alright when there was a loud knocking on the front door.
Faster then I thought Charlie capable of moving he rushed passed me and hurried down the stairs. "That's gotta be the pizza. That was fast." I followed him, not as enthusiastic. Almost all the stairs creaked as I went down.
I noticed Jacob when I got to the bottom step and looked into the living room. He was facing the hall entry with his arms wrapped around his shivering torso. I thought odd that he could be cold when I realized he was fighting the urge to change. Which only happens when a vampire is near. I spun around quickly and was about to call out for Charlie to not open the door when I heard the lock click and the door creak open.
"Chief Swan, good evening." Her voice was like honey in the air. It carried over to me in the living room and made my head spin. My hairs stood on end and I had to place my hand on the wall to stop from toppling over. Jacob started to growl.
"I"m sorry to bother you, but my car has broken down in front of your house. I'd call my father but my cell phone is out of charge." I hadn't realized I was moving until I was standing in the hallway looking at her standing in the door way like a runway model. "Can I use yours?" It was an innocent request, but I couldn't stop thinking about who she was here and how many people she's killed.
Charlie stepped aside. "Sure, Rosalie. Come on in." The clicks of her heels as she entered the house sent shivers down my spine. "The phone is in the kitchen." She didn't even look at me as she walked a little ways then turned into the kitchen.
Charlie shut the door and tuned. "Do you know Rosalie?" He said coming down the hall towards me. "She works with the force on some cases. She's got a real talent for it. I think she goes to school with you." When had Charlie become so talkative? I just wanted to contemplate what I was going to do if this was an attack of some kind not talk about how he knew her.
"Chief Swan?" She had snuck up on us and was standing directly behind him. Her beautiful blond hair was parted to the side with a loose braid over her shoulder. She wore dark jeans and a knee length black coat. Her eyes were friendly enough. But I knew not to trust them.
"Oh." The look of mock surprise that crossed her face didn't seem as genuine as I believe she intended for it to be. "Bella. It's nice to see you outside of school." She flashed a bright smile. I felt the blood leave my face.
"Something wrong, Bells?" He asked, clearly not sensing the tension in the room.
"Yeah." My voice was weak.
"My father, as well as the rest of my family are a little busy. None of them are able to come and get me. Would you mind giving me a ride home?" She touched his shoulder. He, like most humans would be, was charmed by her and I had no doubt he'd do anything for her.
"Of course. Just let me grab my coat and see where I put my keys down." I grabbed onto his arm as he tried to pass me, pleading with my eyes for him now to go. He looked confused and was clearly unable to read the fear in my eyes. "Bella?"
"We can call her a taxi. Just pleas don't go." My voice cracked slightly with panic. I couldn't tell him that she and her family were vampires. The very same vampires responsible for the murders of helpless teenagers and middle aged biology teachers in Forks.
"It wouldn' tbe nice to make her get a taxi." He shrugged my arm off, looking annoyed. "I'm going to leave the money for the pizza on the kitchen counter. Let Jacob know that he's free to it as well." He stepped around me and went in to the living room to get his coat. Then back past us to the kitchen.
As soon as Charlie was out of sight Rosalie had my face cupped between her hands. I tried to pull away, but as I did she pulled me closer to her. She tilted my head up so that I had to meet her gaze. Her eyes were a beautiful dark red and they terrified me. "Edward has a message for you." She breathed. She no longer had to forcefully pull me to her, I was drawn in by her intoxicating. She pushed my head to the side and lightly grazed my ear with her lips. "You're next."
Charlie came back from the kitchen, she was standing away from me leaning against the wall with a bored expression on her face. "Ready to go, kiddo?" She stood up and looked back to me.
"See you later, Bella." She laughed softly then followed Charlie out the front door. The door closed and I found myself on my knees. I just stared until I thought I was going to go crazy. I sensed someone behind me and turned to see Jacob staring at the door like I had been. Anger evident on his face.
I scrambled to my feet and latched onto him.
"J-Jacob." Rosalie's words spinning in my head. Like a cheesy line from a horror movie. If I was next, that meant that Charlie was probably going to be first.
"I know. I'm gonna help Charlie." He sounded strong and sure and I felt some of my panic subsiding. He lead me into the living room and sat me down on the love seat directly in front of the TV. "Will you be okay here on your own?" His words snapped me out of my half dazed state.
"I"m not staying here. I want to come with you." He shook his head and when I tried to stand up he gently pushed me back down. I glared, but he kept a stern face on.
"Bella. It too dang-"
I stood up then and pushed his hand away when he tried to push me back.
"It's too dangerous?" For some odd reason my blood was boiling. "I told you what I've been through in the past. I'm not incapable of dealing with this." I took a deep breath to calm myself and almost laughed at his shocked expression at my outburst.
"'It doesn't matter if this isn't my dimension, Charlie is still my father. He's in this mess because they want to get to me and I will not leave him in danger." I crossed my arms. "So either you take me with you or I drive to the vampires lair by myself." He rolled his eyes. I expected him to start scolding me and telling me more about the dangers of vampires.
"Fine. But driving is going to take too long." I gave him a quizzical look and he smirked. "You told me how that blood sucker-" He put his hands up at my expression, clearly I looked scary. "How Edward used to let you ride on his back. Why can't we do that?" I felt a flush creep up my neck at the thought of riding on the back of a werewolf. I didn't see any problem and nodded in agreement.
"We've wasted a lot of time already." His voice was a little weary. "Come outside with me. But stay back until I've changed." He was already out the door before I even had a chance to acknowledge what he said.
