Love Never Dies

He wasn't a very handsome man, I noted. I was curious as to what his motives were, as he was too smart to believe in Riddle's rise to power. His empty eyes turned to me with a sort of silent understanding.

Who knows when love begins

Who knows what makes it start

"Indeed, what makes love begin and end," he mused. I frowned-what sort of a song was this? Perhaps the truth was hidden . . . perhaps he was with the Light all along?

"The heart is a tricky thing," I decided to agree.

One day it's simply there

Alive inside your heart

It slips into your thoughts

It infiltrates your soul

"I wondered what day I began to love her. It's really difficult to say." Her?

It takes you by surprise

Then seizes full control

"I was eaten alive by my love for her. I didn't know what it was when I was younger. Oh, but it took over. The only thing that ever beat it out was my pride," he said despairingly.

Try to deny it

And try to protest

But love won't let you go

Once you've been possessed

"I did everything I could to try to just be her friend, to separate from her. She'd never go for me, and I knew it," he said with a hint of bitterness. "I couldn't even let go when she died."

Love never dies

Love never falters

Even through the time when she was dead, Severus had loved Lily. He did not speak much during the chorus, for even in death, he was a private man.

Once it has spoken

Love is yours

Love never fades

Love never alters

"All these years, still the same . . . I never stopped regretting the loss of our friendship or what I'd done . . ."

Hearts may get broken

Love endures

Hearts may get broken

Love endures

He stilled. I looked curiously at him. He'd done something to break their friendship, but still loved her, then. I was beginning to guess how this story ended.

And soon as you submit

Surrender flesh and bone

That love takes on a life

Much bigger than your own

"And the boy, I couldn't hate him, no matter how much I wanted to, because he was hers. Her eyes, he had them. The last trace. The love was more than me, more than my knowledge that I'd never see her again . . ."

It uses you at whim

And drives you to despair

And forces you to feel

More joy than you can bear

He was near tears, it seemed to me, though he refused to acknowledge it.

"And I had become his protector, even when he was up for slaughter . . . even at the risk of my life. And when she smiled at me-her smile haunted me from his eyes every day in class . . . and when she died . . . I was nothing. I was merely going through the motions of living. And I still love her, even now that it is all over . . ."

Love gives you pleasure

And love brings you pain

And yet when both are gone

Love will still remain

"Lily . . ." he said, despairing. This, then, was his love? Lily Potter? No, he'd known a different Lily. One with a different last name, her maiden name . . .

Once it has spoken

Love is yours

Love never dies

Love never alters

Hearts may get broken

Love endures

Hearts may get broken

"And Albus thought I had cared about the boy. As far as I had been concerned, the boy could have died at once-if only he wasn't Lily's son. I saw him, when I'd found her in the rubble of the house . . . I'd seen her, lying there, lifeless because of my mistake . . ." This was a broken man. I was not normally pushed to any sort of emotion in this case, but he sobbed in silence, not even gasping loudly for breath. He smiled wryly beneath it all.

"I thought that I'd cried all my tears. It's like I'm reliving that day again."

Love never dies

Love will continue

Love keeps on beating

When you're gone

"I am dead! Why can't I stop feeling this, even now?" he growled softly to himself.

Love never dies

Once it is in you

Love may be fleeting

Love lives on

"Why, why?" he cried out finally. "I knew that she'd never feel the same, that our moments together wouldn't last-why then, do I still love Lily Evans, even now that we are both dead and gone?" he said, his heaving shoulders steadying. He'd seemed the cruelest, the most cold, the least loving-the doors to Hogwarts appeared, and they opened from the inside.

"Sev?" a timid voice that I recognized spoke. He looked up, eyes wide.

"Lily?!" She smiled, and reached out her hand. Love could withstand death-and even if she had never romantically loved him, it was clear-she loved him the entire time, too. He rose, took her hand, and seemed younger in a moment. And for the first time in a very long time, Severus Snape smiled.

Love may be fleeting

Love lives on
