Chapter 9: Soul Mates
I was being tortured. I growled low in my throat as another shot of pain spiked from my scalp. I glared at the reflective image before me as a tinkling laugh sounded behind me. "Growling like an angry kitten is not getting you out of this Bella," the demon pixie stated from behind me, grabbing chunks of my hair, only to wind them painfully tight on top of me head in a French braid. I could not understand this girl's fascination with dressing me up and almost controlling my life to the point I want to hide somewhere very far away so my hair will not be abused.
"Bella, stop it, you know you love me and I'll be done in a few minutes anyway so you can run back to Edward." Through the mirror she rolled her eyes at me, showing the half way done braid in her hands. I huffed, silently confirming that I did love this crazy vampire and waited patiently until my hair was released.
I bolted out of the chair so fast I think I almost went at their speed and ran out of the room, just catching Alice's huff of amused annoyance and a shake of her head. I sprinted up the stairs to Edward's room. I threw open the door, quickly closing it and I leaned my back on it, keeping my ears trained in case the evil pixie decided to recapture me because she didn't change my clothes for the fifth time after Edward and I came back from the meadow.
I gave a relieved sigh as I down casted my eyes to see my tan gladiator sandals, white lace skirt that touched my knees and a light blue, no sleeves blouse. I glared at my outfit for a moment, sorely wishing I had jeans and a t-shirt on with warm sock.
An amused chuckled sounded in front of me and I lifted my baleful look towards Edward, my new boyfriend/mate. Edward was sitting on his comfy black leather couch with his elbows resting on his knees as humor danced in his yellow quartz eyes.
"Oh Edward," I sang in a sickly sweet voice that masked my irritated state, "Do you know where the jeans I came in are?" I tilted my head sideways in a curious manner with a wide smile that was meant to creep people out. All it did on Edward was made him chuckle more.
He got up and pulled out one of his draws, reaching in he pulled out my jeans that I wore today. He held out my pants to me and I took it from his hands. I headed straight for his closet and closed the door so I can have privacy. The lights flicked on over my head and I saw two rows of clothes in a wide closet that was as big as my bathroom at Charlie's house. I stared for a minute before Alice popped into my mind and I snorted. It seems she likes to get involved in the wardrobes of people life. I spotted something out of the corner of my eyes and I smiled as I walked over to it. There hanging on a hanger in the very back was an original Woodstock t-shirt. I shimmed out of my clothes and into the black skinny jeans and Edward's t-shirt. I held it up to my nose and inhaled, smelling Edward's scent. I smiled, calming down from my frustration of Bella Barbie.
I gathered the clothes on the floor and folded them so I can give them back to Alice. I opened up the door to see Edward by the record player that was in his room in the far right corner where the two windows walls meet. I laid the clothes on the side of the couch and waited patiently for Edward to turn back around.
Suddenly Elvis's voice drifted on the ballad of Love Me Tender as Edward turned to face me with his hand held out. His eyes widened as he took in me wearing his oversized Woodstock shirt. I took his hand only to be pulled against his body with one of his hands on my waist while his other hand interlaced our fingers. I rested my hand on his shoulder and kept my eyes locked on his.
We started to sway to the soft music of Elvis Presley, slowly dancing around Edward's room. I laid my head on his chest, eyes closed and cheek pressed tight as Edward started to hum in an imitation of the King of Rock.
"About what we were talking about in the meadow, the red string of fate, does that mean you know who you are connected to?" He asked as we turned to the left in our sway. "Mmhmm," I hummed in agreement as I kept my eyes closed, a smile toying at my lips. I tuned into his curious, almost panicking soul as its mind went into overdrive on wondering who my soul mate is. I cracked my eyes open just a tiny bit to see a thin red string loop around our bodies before closing my eyes again and silently sighing in contentment.
Elvis's smooth voice changed his love ballad into "Can't Help Falling in Love".
"Well, who is it?" Edward impatiently asked as we continued to sway, never once stopping in between songs. I giggled, deciding to tease him as payback for leaving me in the hands of his sister. "Well, he is tall, handsome, has messy bronze hair and green eyes. He doesn't have a huge build, but he isn't lanky either. He is older than me and very protective too. He is kind, sweet, yet overacts and doesn't trust me a whole lot with his secrets," I went on, feeling his body tense at every mention of 'his' description. I was describing his soul and I'm not sure if he understood that either. I continued on, "He has a good name too, a little old fashioned, but a nice name. I'm pretty sure you know him too. His name is Edward Anthony Masen Cullen." I hid my smile in his chest as I felt him completely stop our swaying. His body was frozen on the spot and he was completely tense.
I felt his hands move from their position to my arms and I looked up to see an unreadable expression on his face. I slowly started to worry about what he was thinking. Did he think this situation is a bad thing? Is he disappointed? Does-
My internal worries were halted by smooth, cool lips caressing my own. I closed my eyes, holding back a moan as I kissed him back. We stood there for a few seconds more, letting Elvis wrap around us in the dying notes of his love song as our lips explored uncharted territory.
When we pulled back, I was slightly out of breath, but I was overjoyed at the new expression I saw on Edward's face. Edward's face was completely lit up in joy and love, a wide smile spread across his face showing off his teeth, and his eyes held a sparkle I had never seen before. I laughed a little as he picked me up under my armpits and spun me in a slow circle in complete joy before putting me down on the ground to give me another chaste kiss.
I shook my head and laughed with him as Hound Dog exploded from the record player. Gleeful and being silly we locked hands and moved our shoulders in sync back and forth in a pseudo jive. He held up our arms and I twisted underneath, both of us laughing at our silliness. In this moment I wasn't Bella, the girl who can see souls and he wasn't Edward Cullen, the hottie that is a vampire. It was just Bella and Edward, two teenagers goofing off together because they decided to.
Together we danced and swung to the music until the record player slowly came to a stop. I flopped down on the king sized bed in a tangle of golden comforter and brown hair with arms spread open and chest heaving from the fun. Edward crawled up beside me, his golden eyes dancing with happiness as he lay on his stomach, propped up by his arms. I turned my head to him, breath still heaving as I smiled wide at him. I was actually happy for the first time in a very long time. Foreheads touched softly as cold met warm with smiles pulling our lips up and an inner happiness that only can only be brought out from being completely content and full of life sparkled in our eyes.
In that instant where we were wrapped around each other, I knew, without a doubt that this was what a true soul mate felt.
I was extremely hesitant to getting up on Monday morning. I had spent my whole weekend at the Cullen house, with the exception of Charlie not knowing. During that weekend I had learned to stay away from Alice when she wanted to play Bella Barbie, but I could never get away. Jasper seemed to relax a little after he got used to my scent a little. That was when I had an idea. I knew my scent smelled extremely good to them and Edward was mostly used to it now because I was around him all the time. The idea I had thought of was about getting them a stuff animal and keep it with me for a while until my scent is saturated in the small being. Then I would give them their animal back so they could quickly get used to my scent. Most of the Cullens were for it except Rosalie. She didn't want to even try it and thought it was a stupid idea.
Alice just ignored her and went to buy everyone a stuff animal. Alice was a bunny, Edward a mountain lion, Jasper a cheetah, Emmett a bear, Carlisle didn't need one, Esme a deer, and Rosalie a peacock. I had stuffed the animals into my closet where my clothes were before heading to bed to wait for Monday. Edward had picked me up and drove me to school.
Everyone still stared at us, especially when Edward grabbed my hand and kissed my forehead. I blocked out the raging female souls along with the heartbroken male souls. Edward's lips quirked up into a smile, no doubt hearing the minds of the other students. I rolled my eyes at him and lightly bumped my hip into his in a silent 'Stop being so smug'.
He lightly bumped my hip back and winked down at me. For being one of the strangest couples out there, I had to admit that we acted pretty normal.
For the whole day, Edward walked me to class while holding my hand. He would kiss me before he left and show up just as I was leaving the room. Edward showed up just as the bell for lunch rang.
"Shall I escort you to the cafeteria?" he held out his hand for me to take. I giggled as I tangled our fingers together, swinging our combined hands a bit. "You shall, good sir." I teased him.
We were both smiling and in such a good mood today that I was sure no one would ruin it for us. I picked up a tray in the lunch line before it was whisked out of my hands. I stared up at Edward as he held the tray in his hands and held a slightly disgusted look at the food before us. "Hey!" I exclaimed, reaching out my hands to take back my tray. He held it out of my reach as he started to laugh at my struggles. He leaned down and kissed my lips lightly, causing me to be momentarily dazzled by him.
"I'm buying lunch today," he stated. He took my hand and grabbed the pasta with some fruit and water. He piled enough on his tray for two people and led us to pay. He reached for his wallet to pay for the food and I was a little annoyed that he was paying for my food. Edward just flashed me his crooked grin and pulled me along to their lunch table.
I gripped his hand a bit tighter as I heard various souls talking about me.
"She's just a skank."
"Slut."
"After their money."
"Not pretty at all"
"So plain"
"Already did it with him."
I took a quick glance at Edward to see his jaw tense and I squeezed his hand in reassurance. I knew these thoughts were out of petty jealousness so I didn't let it bother me. Besides I wasn't going to see these people anyway after I graduate and I had no plans on coming for the reunions either.
Edward sat down our tray and pulled out my seat for me. I smiled up at him as I sat down and started to eat the school's pasta. Edward sat down next to me and started up a conversation with his siblings. I was having fun, conversing with Jasper about the civil war that our history teacher was teaching about and we were going over the pros and cons of the war. Alice zoned out suddenly and Jasper was right there with his arm around her shoulder. Edward stared intently at Alice while Emmett and Rosalie were waiting to hear.
I silently watched Alice, recognizing the look immediately because I would have the same look if I was looking into someone's soul.
Edward's face broke out into a smile, clearly excited for something. Alice broke out of her trance in squeal, clapping her hands and bouncing up and down in her seat. Jasper looked confused along with Emmett and Rosalie. "There is going to be a thunderstorm tonight!" she exclaimed, beaming at the others.
The rest of the Cullens beamed back, but I was completely confused. I didn't know why a thunderstorm was exciting, but I guess it would be a little interesting since I didn't see too many of them in Arizona. "Why is a thunderstorm exciting to you guys?" I asked, tilting my head slightly.
"Well Bellsy-Boo, were there is thunder there is a vampire baseball game and I'M going to bring the lightening," Emmett said, flexing his muscles as if he was a god himself. I snorted, covering my mouth as I broke out into a fit of giggles while the rest of the table busted out laughing.
"Wow, Emmy, full of yourself?" I asked, raising my head enough so my chin was resting on the table top. A giggle escaped me every now and then as I thought of Emmett standing up and doing the macho pose while flexing his muscles. Emmett stuck out his tongue at me.
"Bella, you are going to come to the baseball game, right?" Alice asked, giving me the puppy dog look. I rolled my eyes at her. "Like you didn't know." I smiled with them and I was suddenly very excited for this vampire baseball game.
