I knew almost as soon as I walked through the door that I was in trouble. My dad was sitting at his usual at the end of table and was just finishing his afternoon mug of mead. When he saw me walk through the door he put down his mug and called me over. I tried to keep either a neutral or curious look on my face, really anything so I wouldn't look worried or guilty of something.
"Sit down, Enya." Stoick said and I pulled out the chair that sat opposite of his. "Enya," he began "You know nothing happens on this island without me hearing about it, don't you?"
I simply nodded my head.
"Well, what was this I heard about you riding on the back of a Zippleback? A Zippleback that, I was told, had a strong resemblance to the twins' dragon?"
I felt my heartbeat speed up as soon as my dad mentioned Barf and Belch. I let out a nervous laugh and rubbed the back of my neck. "You know dad, there is actually a pretty funny story to go along with that…story."
"Is there?" Stoick asked. I nodded my head. "Why don't you tell me this story?"
My head started coming up with a hundred different stories for why I would be flying on Barf and Belch. None of them seeming believable. "Uh…well…"I began "Well for starters I actually was flying on a Zippleback. That part I know you already know. However, you'll be happy to know that I wasn't flying on my own."
"Really?" my father asked "Who was with you?"
"Hic-"
"And don't say your brother because I saw him at the academy while I was making my rounds on Thornado."
I started biting the tip of my tongue. I actually was planning on saying Hiccup. I was going to say we found Barf and Belch somewhere and we were bringing him back to the village. I tried to rack my brain for a name I could use and I knew I had to think of one quick since I could see my dad starting to grow impatient.
"Tuffnut." I blurted out.
"Tuffnut?" My dad's eyes grew wide.
"Tuffnut?!" I silently yelled at myself. "Out of all the people on this island, you picked him?"
"I thought I told him and his sister," my father said, snapping me out of my thoughts "They were not allowed to be out flying. Why was he out and more importantly, why were you out with him?"
I started biting my tongue again. "We…I-I…he-" I stammered out. Like I said, I knew he would be mad if he found out I flew on a dragon that wasn't Toothless or Thornado.
Suddenly, I felt an idea spark.
"I lost a bet to him." I said plainly.
"A bet?" my dad asked and I nodded my head. "What was the bet?"
"Well…the bet was to see who could eat the most…yak milk." I responded.
"Eat the most yak milk?"
"Drink! I meant to say drink." I quickly corrected "And…Tuff said that if he lost, he would clean our whole house. But if I lost, I would have to go flying with him. Well, I kinda ate a big breakfast before the best so that gave me a disadvantage. So, that's why you heard about me being out flying." I smiled at my dad when I finished. To me, that actually sounded pretty convincing. Though, I wasn't so sure about how my dad saw it.
"And, what prompted Tuffnut to make that bet?" Stoick asked.
"Dad, it's Tuff," I smirked "What prompts him to do any of the things he does?"
He seemed to take that as a reasonable response because he let out a "hmm" and raised an eyebrow. He then let out a sigh and stood up. "Alright, I suppose you have a point."
I smiled up at my dad and stood up too. "Great! Well, I'm going to-"
However," Stoick cut me off "The next time you see Tuff, tell him the next time he plans to take my daughter of a flight, he should come talk to me first."
I nodded my head. "I will dad."
That night, after dinner in the Great Hall, I followed everyone down into the plaza.
"So, what do you guys want to do tonight?"
"We're," Snotlout said, pointing to him and the twins "Going out for a little flying. Why don't you go steal Stormfly and come and join us?"
I rolled my eyes. "No thanks. Besides, what's the fun in stealing a dragon if the owner's right beside me?"
Snotlout muttered something under his breath and walked over to his dragon, the twins following behind him.
"We need to leave too, Enya." Fishlegs said. "It's boot night."
"Oh yeah, I forgot that was tonight." Hiccup said "Try not to pass out like Enya did last time."
I gave him a quick punch in the arm before waving goodbye to Fishlegs and Astrid.
"Come on Enya," Hiccup said, starting toward out house "We have to get home to set out dad's boots."
"Actually Hiccup," I said, catching up to him "I was wondering if we could talk for a few minutes."
"Sure Enya. What do you need to talk about?"
"Hiccup…what was it like the first time you rode on Toothless?"
"What was it like?" Hiccup asked and I nodded my head "Well, at first it was a little scary. I mean, I was the first Viking to ride a dragon so there wasn't any handbook or pamphlet about it, so most of it was just guessing and hoping things worked. But when I finally figured everything out, it was really amazing. Why do you ask?"
I took in a deep breath and let it out. "Well, I was wondering if you could teach me how to ride a dragon. By myself."
Hiccup raised an eyebrow "Really?" I nodded my head again. "Why do you want to learn?"
"You know how I was flying on Barf and Belch today? Well, while I was up there, I got this feeling in my stomach. I can't really describe it that well, but I felt a sense of freedom while I was up there and I realized that this is what you get to feel every day. This is what Astrid feels. This is what Fishlegs, Snotlout, the twins feel every time they take off from the ground and are up there flying. For once, I felt wind in my face. I felt my hair start to get tangled. I could smell the air around me. Don't ask me how, because I honestly have no idea myself, but I felt like instead of Barf and Belch, I was the one flying. And Hiccup…it was amazing." I couldn't help but get a goofy smile on my face when I started to remember what it was like for me to be up in the air and I saw a slight smile appear on Hiccup's face as well. But then it slowly dropped
"Look, Enya, it's great that you got to experience that, but don't you think flying might be a little difficult with you…uh…fear?"
"Yeah," I nodded my head "But I've been thinking about that too. See, I was also wondering if, before you help me with my flying, if you could help me get over my fear of heights too."
"Is it even possible to get over a fear?" Hiccup asked.
"Of course it is." I responded "Don't you remember? You used to be deathly afraid of dragons. Now look at you. You're the 'Dragon Conqueror'!"
Hiccup rolled his eyes. "You know I hate it when people call me that."
"I know." I smiled "That's why I said it. So, what do you say? Are you willing to help me?"
Hiccup scratched the back of his head and started glancing from me to the ground. "Enya-"
"Please Hiccup?" I begged "You know I don't ask for help with anything unless I'm 100% sure that I can't do it myself. And this is something that I really want. I want to be up there in the sky with you and everyone else instead of being on the ground and watching everyone else have all the fun. Please." I started trying to make a pleading look, or at least something that would make Hiccup feel guilty if he said no."
"Ugh…alright, Enya." Hiccup finally said and I immediately started hugging him.
"Thank you Hiccup! Thank you so much!" I yelled.
"Enya…Enya I can't breathe." Hiccup said through strangled breaths and I let him go.
"Sorry."
"It's alright." Hiccup huffed out, letting out a few coughs. "And you're welcome. When I figure out a way to help you, I'll let you know so we can get started.
I nodded my head. "Alright. And again, thank you. I'll figure out a way to repay you one day. I promise."
