If there was one thing Izaya Orihara was known to say was… that he loved humans. Not just one person in particular, but humans as a whole. He simply adored putting them in various situations so he could see how they would react. A rather twisted way of showing one's love if there ever was, but what if someone decided to make Izaya show his love in a different way?

Izaya was lying in his bed, a rather rare thing for him since his main job as an informant caused him to have the craziest hours as well as his little hobby of manipulating people to watch their reactions, but that's neither here nor there.

Izaya's eyes fluttered opened before he hazily took in his surroundings as his vision refocused. "What the hell happened to me?" He wondered aloud, raking fingers through his hair.

"The last thing I remember was meeting a new client then… how did I get back to my apartment?" Izaya sighed looking down at his appearance. Once he took it all in his eyes widen and he gasped.

He was wearing a rather form-fitting black and crimson leather outfit. Black leather pants with a crimson stripe on the side looked as if they were painted onto his lower body. A matching top that had a silver zipper down the front hugged his torso.

On his slender yet dexterous hands were black and red gloves, looking down his feet were a pair of comfortable black and red shin-length leather boots. It was then he felt something on his face.

Rushing to his bathroom he looked in the mirror and shakily touched the black domino mask over his eyes. However to his shock he was unable to remove it.

"What the hell? Damn it, come off!" Izaya shouted gripping the sides trying to pry the mask off, but he failed.

Suddenly a piercing scream echoed in his mind and in a flash Izaya ran out his bedroom window, jumped onto the fire escape, and leaped across to the lower adjacent building's rooftop.

"Okay? How was I able to make that jump?" Izaya blinked in confusion. His body pushed forward going in the direction of the scream.

Using his parkour skills that seem to be on steroids he made it to the source of the scream, a young teenage girl was being assaulted by a small group of thugs.

"Oh come on sweetheart we just want to have some fun," The apparent leader of the gang smirked, cornering the young school girl, his fellow thugs all grinned and laughed at her frightened expression.

His long greasy brown hair dangled over his black beady eyes, his outfit consisted of a wrinkled dark green school uniform that all the other thugs wore with several different accessories mainly chains or bandannas.

Silently Izaya jumped down from the rooftop and landed behind them. "I suggest you let the girl go," Izaya ordered without conscious thought. "What is wrong with me? Why do I care what happens to this girl?!" He mentally yelled.

"Who are you some kind of superhero?" The leader turned to face Izaya.

Crimson eyes flashed dangerously as the other thugs shuffled nervously. "What are you standing around for? Kick his ass!" The gang leader yelled forcing the others into action.

One of them swung the baseball bat he was carrying at Izaya only to miss by a hairsbreadth. Grabbing the outstretched bat Izaya pulled the man towards him and knocked him out with a simple jab to the face.

After seeing one beaten so easily two more tried to gang up on Izaya, their punches were all dodged with little effort. For every hit they failed to land a hit Izaya would counterattack with strikes that resulted in two battered thugs.

Another tried to charge at Izaya only to be kicked into a wall with an impressive spinning back kick leaving only the leader who was now desperately holding the girl hostage with a switchblade.

"Stay back! I don't know who the fuck you are, but don't come near me or I'll kill this bitch!" The leader shouted holding the knife out in front of him and his captive.

Izaya slowly raised his hands in a defusing fashion. "Calm down, you do not want to do that," Izaya said soothingly.

"Miss, are you alright?" Izaya turned to the scared girl who jerkily nodded her head. "Good," He smiled reassuringly.

"Okay look here is how it's going to work you let the girl go. You can take your friends to the hospital and leave," Izaya negotiated.

Narrowing his beady eyes in distrust the leader asked, "How do I know you won't try something when I let her go?"

"You don't you're just going to have to trust me," Izaya said simply. The man only growled before a sickening smirk came across his face.

"I'm not taking any chances!" The leader flipped his knife around and turned to stab the girl.

"No!" The girl screamed, closing her eyes waiting for inevitable pain.

It was a few seconds later she realized she felt no pain. Opening her eyes to see Izaya somehow crossed the gap in a matter of seconds, disarmed the thug, and knocked him out.

"How did you do that?" She asked in complete shock. Izaya opened his mouth only for the sound of sirens to fill the air.

"Freeze, do not move!" Kinnosuke yelled. He and his squad of motorcycle cops were at the entrance to the alleyway.

Sensing the danger her newfound hero was in the girl jumped in front of Izaya to defend him. She shouted, "No he protected me from these men! You can't arrest him!"

She turned to Izaya and smiled, "Go on, run."

Izaya nodded his head in thanks before his eyes narrowed in determination. Quickly running to gain speed he jumped onto a dumpster, grabbed the bottom rung of a nearby fire escape, and zipped up to the building's rooftop with all the agility of a squirrel.

"A few of you stay here to arrest these guys and get this girl's statement, the rest of us are going after him!" Kinnosuke commanded as he and three others raced after Izaya.

"Great… I'm being chased by the police now I know how Celty feels," Izaya murmured. He ran, jumped, and flipped across a series of buildings finally losing the cops.

"I give him points for persistence, but really I did him a favor. Those guys were going to rob and rape that girl if I didn't get there to save her in time," Izaya sighed before stiffening.

He slowly touched his face to discover the mask was gone. Looking down he saw he was wearing his normal clothes again. "Yes!" Izaya cheered hugging himself, stroking the fur of his coat lovingly.

Making his way back to the street Izaya whistled merrily hoping that was the last of it. He only made it down a block before a strange feeling overcame him.

"Wait I know this feeling!" Izaya gasped. He darted into an empty alley as he felt the mask return to his face along with his getup. "No… no… no… what now?" He sighed.

A weirdly familiar couple of voices echoed in his mind as he ran towards the source. He found himself in the park where Mikado was on the ground nursing a nasty head wound while Anri was pinned to a tree by large teenager with hair dyed green carrying a rusty pipe.

"Shrimps like you don't deserve a fine girl like this, run along little boy, and let a real man take care of her," The green-haired punk smirked.

"Mikado!" Anri shouted in alarm looking around to see there were too many people around to use Saika.

"Now how's about you and I go somewhere quiet?" The green-haired teen grinned cruelly at Anri.

Mikado groaned before slowly getting back onto his feet and said sounding braver than he actually felt, "Leave Anri alone."

Growling at Mikado the moss-head teen raised the pipe in the air to hit Mikado once again only for it to vanish from his hand. "What the hell?" He looked about to find Izaya a couple of feet away tossing the pipe up and down in his hand.

"Where did he come from?" A person from the crowd muttered.

"I didn't even see him move to steal the pipe, did you?" Another whispered.

"Who the hell are you?" The green-haired punk growled.

Izaya smirked with a careless shrug, "Just a concern citizen. Now I suggest stepping away from those two nice and easy."

"Or what?" The teen replied seeming confident that was until Izaya bent and broke the pipe in his hands effortlessly.

"We wouldn't want to get hurt now do we?" Izaya smiled deceptively pleasant while the punk paled, turned around, and ran away. "Well that was easy." He chuckled.

"Thank you," Anri and Mikado walked over to Izaya and bowed. It was then Izaya realized no one could tell it was him under the mask.

In his mind he looked the same just wearing a domino mask and costume, but maybe to others he appeared and even sounded different.

Waving a hand dismissively Izaya said, "No problem enjoy your date." Chuckling when he saw them blush and stutter.

"Hey stop!" Kinnosuke and his men appeared.

Sighing in dismay Izaya groaned, "Not again. Looks like I have to run."

Izaya took off with the cops giving chase. "That was strange, I wonder who that guy was," Anri asked Mikado.

"I don't know, but he shouldn't be chased by the cops if he's helping people. First Celty and now this man… I guess the police don't like it when people do their jobs," Mikado replied.

Blue eyes glared whispering angrily, "It's not fair though Celty and this guy didn't do anything wrong. If he didn't show up my head would have been bashed in and that green-haired guy would have assaulted you."

"Still where did he come from the only people we know with strength like that is Shizuo and Simon?" Anri wondered aloud trying to calm Mikado.

"Who knows…?" Mikado said. "But I intend to find out at least to thank him. I mean a real superhero has appeared in Ikebukuro someone has to know something," He thought.

Hours later after many acts of forced heroics Izaya made it back to his apartment by basically crawling tiredly through the door no longer in costume.

"Where have you been?" Namie spoke suddenly startling Izaya. "Don't take this the wrong way, but you are alright? You like hell." She stated.

Flopping onto the couch facedown Izaya replied, "It's been a long day. By the way you should tell your brother not to pick fights with a group of people who decide it is okay to make a pass at Mika."

Brown eyes widen in shock Namie gasped, "How do you know about that? Are you watching my Seiji?"

"No I… oh no…" Izaya gasped. The mask returned to his face and his uniform appeared on his body. In his mind the echoes of various screams cried out loudly. "I'll explain later!" He yelled out opening a window and leaping out into the night.

"No way… Izaya was the one who rescued Seiji this afternoon. He's the guy on the news… the superhero?" Namie collapsed onto the couch and decided to wait.

Arriving at the scene Izaya looked around with a feeling of dread. Scattered all about were bent and broken street signs meaning one thing: Shizuo Heiwajima.

Speaking of which he spied Shizuo surrounded by a large group of Yellow Scarves. "Please tell the mask doesn't want me to rescue Shizu-chan," Izaya mentally cried tears of anguish.

One of the more desperate members of the Yellow Scarves pulled out a gun. "This should stop Shizuo for good!" He yelled firing the gun, but he was a poor shot and only managed to graze Shizuo's cheek.

"Oh no," Izaya muttered. He could see things in slow motion the trajectory of the bullet was heading towards a frightened little girl cowering next to her mother. It seems that Shizuo's rampage made some people too scared to move.

In a flash Izaya appeared before them, grabbed them and moved them away. The bullet harmlessly embedded itself into the ground.

"Are you two alright?" Izaya asked. The mother cried hugging her daughter tightly thanking him profusely.

Smiling kindly at the two something Izaya didn't even know he had in him, his gaze turned enraged as he walked purposefully towards Shizuo and the Yellow Scarves.

"Hey what the hell do you think you're doing?" A Yellow Scarf asked the same one that fired the gun.

Choosing to say nothing Izaya only vanished before their eyes, stole the weapon, and appeared before them again with gun in hand.

"What the fuck just happened?! How he do that? Damn this guy is fast!" Various gang members questioned the reality of what occurred.

"You do know that Japan has very strict gun laws and for good reason seeing that you almost killed that little girl," Izaya hissed crushing the gun into pieces which surprised everyone few were capable of such strength.

And in no way did Izaya look like he should be able to do anything like that. "A tough guy huh… well guys I say we take them both down. Shizuo and this asshole!" The leader yelled. They charged at Shizuo and Izaya.

Izaya glared dancing in and out of the gang members all the while delivering punches and kicks. In a matter of two minutes they all sprawled at his feet.

"Well can't say I'm not impressed," Shizuo stated running his hand through his blond hair feeling a bit awkward. Usually he's the one who does this sort of thing while others watch, not the other way around.

Izaya only stared at Shizuo this is one of the rare times Shizuo spoke to him civilly though it must be because the debt collector had no idea who he was truly talking to.

"So just how are you so strong?" Shizuo asked Izaya.

Sighing seeing no harm in answering Izaya replied, "To be honest I have no idea."

Shizuo's eyes widen in shock as a strange feeling came over him. "Could this guy be like me, did he one day out of the blue gain his strength? But he's fast too…" He mused.

Izaya hearing sirens in the distance turned around and ran. "Wait!" Shizuo yelled out, but Izaya was already out of sight.

Izaya came back to his apartment to find Namie watching the news. The top story was about him as various videos from phones and security cameras were shown.

"So what happened?" Namie asked muting the television.

"No clue… all I remember before all this was meeting a client. I woke up in my bed in costume and have been saving people all day. From what I gather the mask vanishes when no one is in danger, when someone is in danger nearby it appears and I feel compelled to save them," Izaya explained.

Folding her arms and looking him over as if studying him she asked, "Any other changes?"

"I've been thinking and feeling differently… just not too long ago some of the Yellow Scarves almost shot and killed some little girl if I didn't step in. I never felt so angry before, this righteous fury was pumping through my veins," Izaya rubbed his throbbing temples.

"Yeah the old you wouldn't care so much. This is changing your outlook on life other than giving you super powers. You possess super strength, increased speed and agility. Do you have any other abilities?" Namie inquired.

Shaking his head Izaya quipped, "I'll let you know if I begin to fly."

After pulling out a medicine bag from out of nowhere Namie gave Izaya a basic physical, after writing down the results she made a few calls.

"Look I'm not going to become some sort of experiment just to satisfy your curiosity. If I wanted that I would have contacted Shinra or Shingen. Of course, I'll be right back!" Izaya grabbed his coat and ran out the door.

"Hey Izaya what's up you look completely exhausted!" Shinra exclaimed. He let in the info broker into his apartment. Izaya tiredly sat onto the couch next to Celty who was watching television.

On the scene was the latest news of Izaya fighting the Yellow Scarves, Izaya inwardly cringed when he saw how close he was to Shizuo, almost as if he was protecting the Monster of Ikebukuro.

[What's wrong? There's something different about you…] Celty asked as Izaya looked down at the PDA in front of his face.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you, but what do you mean by different?" Izaya raised a brow questioningly.

After a brief moment of hesitation or deliberation Celty typed, [Being a supernatural creature I can sometimes sense magic. Mostly items people have or if they might have magic in their ancestry, though this power is severely limited without my head. But, I'm sensing something coming from you… some sort of magic.]

Shinra and Izaya blinked when they read the message. She cleared it and typed once again, [It must be very powerful for me to sense it, I haven't been able to for a long while.]

"So what's going on Izaya?" Shinra asked worriedly.

Izaya felt a familiar feeling overcome him and wearily said in his usually cryptic way, "You'll see…"

In a flash his mask and uniform appeared startling Shinra and Celty. "You're that superhero that's been on the news!" Shinra yelled.

"Yes and I have to go," Izaya said moving to the window, opened it, and disappeared into the night.

Celty quickly jumped up and followed Izaya. She had been watching the news all day especially since that cop Kinnosuke was involve, beyond curious that there was another person out there who earned the man's personal attention.

Kinnosuke even went on record to say he will not rest until "The Mask" is caught or so he told the media.

It was only a few blocks away where she found Izaya doing something rather cliché: he was rounding up a pair of thieves trying to steal from a jewelry store.

"Seriously a jewelry store?" Izaya huffed though it could have been because he had to use a street sign to tie up the robbers. "Feel… so… unclean…" He shuddered.

Turning around to hear the neigh of Shooter Izaya could see she was laughing, as her body quivered.

[If only Shizuo could see you he would be proud.] She giggled.

"Not funny Celty you won't type a word of this to Shizu-chan. It's bad enough the mask wanted me to defend the brute!" Izaya whined.

[Come on we better leave before the police shows up.] Celty advised. Izaya hopped on the back of her bike and they left just in time to miss the cops.

"Man does that guy ever sleep?" Izaya commented while they caught a glimpse of Kinnosuke.

A few minutes later they arrived back at Shinra's apartment the mask and costume having already vanished.

"So it just appears whenever someone is in danger or there is a crime being committed. You really are a superhero!" Shinra gushed.

Glaring at the underground doctor Izaya growled, "Don't be so excited once I figure out how to get rid of the mask I'll be back to normal."

"So you can't control the transformation?" Shinra asked.

Izaya stilled and then sheepishly rubbed the back of his head mumbling, "Never really tried."

Shinra only chuckled and then gave a reassuring nod. Sighing Izaya closed his eyes and thought of the sensation he would get when the mask would appear on his face.

Celty and Shinra looked in awe as the mask and costume materialized in a statically way over his original clothing. The more Izaya concentrated the more solid the uniform became before the getup faded then vanished.

"Izaya, are you okay?" Shinra murmured as Izaya suddenly fell back onto the couch. "Whoa!" He rushed over to the unconscious informant turned superhero.

[Is he alright?] Celty asked.

"Yeah it must have taken a lot out of him. Whatever this mask is, it's powerful. I guess he'll need to practice how to make it appear and disappear at will," Shinra said checking Izaya's pulse happy to know it was strong and steady.

[I'm worried though it seemed as if he has no choice when he changes and he's been transformed all day. He couldn't have gotten much rest.] Celty stated.

"Oh you're so kind my beautiful Celty! But you're right this is a problem. Luckily we know this started only today since he would have been on the news much sooner if he came into possession of the mask earlier," Shinra theorized.

[Still there is a lot of power in that mask. We need to figure out how Izaya got ahold of it.] Celty wrote as Shinra nodded his head in agreement.
