"I'm sorry what?" The panic in the Elena's voice was evident.
"Holy crap." Stefan muttered.
"OMG." Caroline's voice was heard.
Elena stared at the elder woman in utter shock, still not knowing how to process the information she just shared. She felt her heart thumping loudly in her chest and couldn't stop the light tremors that went through her body.
"How did this happen?" Caroline said looking at her friend with a stunned expression. "I mean I know how it happened but don't you guys know what condoms are?" She looked at them.
"Caroline eww." Stefan whispered her while scrunching his nose.
"No, no, this is wrong. This can't be happening." Elena said with despair. "You must be wrong, how could you know that? You've known me for five minutes." The brunette looked at the witch waiting for an answer. "You're no doctor, hell not even a doctor could know that just by looking at me."
"I have my magic darling and trust me. I' not mistaken."
"Oh God, Oh God." Elena gripped her head with both hands and started pacing around the room.
"Elena, I think you need to calm down." Damon said to Elena and she stared at him like he had grown a third head.
"Calm down? How can I calm down? My mom is going to kill me!" She shouted at him.
"I knew this trip was a bad thing. We should have stayed in Mystic Falls." Stefan muttered, which earned him a cold glare from Damon.
"Why aren't you panicking Damon?" Caroline asked with true curiosity.
"Yes, I want to know the exact same thing." Alaric looked at his friend "Considering you just knocked up an underage girl!" The blonde man eyes pierced at his friend. "Her mom is going to sue your ass Salvatore."
"Oh my God he's right." Elena said nervously. "Damon she's going to kill us, she's going to kill us both." She walked closed to him and gripped his bicep with her hands. "I'm not kidding Damon."
"Elena, just relax." He said in a shooting manner.
"I can't relax." Her doe eyes widened while looking at him, "I'm eighteen, I don't know anything about life…this is my first trip alone, I have a psycho god or whatever following me…and I just got myself knocked up." Her expression of horror almost made Damon laugh but he controlled, this was a serious situation and she needed his support. "I can't take care of a baby."
"I just want to remind all of you that we have a bigger situation in our hands." Sheila spoke earning the attention from everyone in the room.
"No offense lady, but I think this is serious too." Caroline said.
"I can see that but we also need to make plans…Klaus won't be wasting anytime."
At the mention of the man's name Elena felt her stomach churn, her face turned white pale and her legs started shaking. "I think I'm gonna be sick." She whispered. Damon looked at her and without thinking twice, he took her in his arms and carried her towards a large red couch placed next to the window.
"He won't be happy with this news." The tone of the elder woman was laced with concern and grieve. "You know this, Damon." Damon closed his eyes and when he opened them they were charged with hurt and fear.
"Damon?" Elena asked from the couch. "What is she talking about?" Her voice sounded so tiny in that big room.
"Nothing, we just need to start preparing things." He answered her dismissively.
"Damon, no more lies. Remember?" Damon closed his eyes and kneeled in front of the couch so he could be eye level with her. He took a deep breath before speaking.
"This isn't the first time you've been pregnant Elena." He said while caressing her hand that was resting on the armchair.
"Yes I know. Amelia was pregnant too…she died before the baby could be born." Damon was taken aback with that piece of information, he wasn't aware that Elena already knew how their previous life had ended.
"Before that…in our first life together…do you remember what I told you?" His blue eyes looked at her attentively.
"We ran away from my crazy husband."
"Well we were able to stay hidden for a while… we had a baby girl named Isabella." His lips curved in the ghost of a smile at the memory. "When Klaus found us, she was six months old…he killed us all." Elena covered her mouth with her hand to prevent the gasp coming out of her. "Sometime after that…in another life-"Damon took a deep breath. "We had a boy named Theodore. He was found drowned when he was eight years old…three days before Klaus killed us."
"Dear God." Both Caroline and Stefan whispered at the same time with their face covered in true horror.
"You were pregnant some other times too…but the pregnancies could never come to an end because he always found us first." Elena felt the fear and grieve choking up on her, her whole body was trembling and she probably would have burst into tears if it wasn't for Damon's soft hand calming her down, tracing gentle circles inside her wrist.
"He killed all of your children." Alaric muttered in complete horror.
Elena looked in Damon's eyes and what she saw there broke her heart in a million pieces. He had been forced to carry this burden over the years, the fear, the pain…she didn't remember any of it and still felt like her heart had been ripped out of her chest. She couldn't imagine what he was feeling.
He remembered. He remembered their lives, their babies and he had to live with the knowledge that they were never going to be safe; he had to live with memories of lives that never ended up happy. Lives full of hurt and anger.
"Now you see why is so important that we stop him?" Bonnie spoke for the first time since the news of Elena's pregnancy was revealed.
"Then what do we have to do?" Stefan looked at the young witch with determination on his eyes.
"We're getting to that, boy." Sheila said with a serious expression. "But I think Elena may need some time to process all of this so why don't we let her get some rest and we can keep going with this reunion."
"No, I want to be here." Elena said stubbornly. "This man…he needs to be stopped and I'm not going to sit here and do nothing about it." She got up from the couch and vertigo hit her immediately, luckily Damon was right next to her to hold her.
"And you're also pregnant, been through a lot and you need to rest." Damon said to her in a shooting manner, like if he was talking with a child.
"Damon no, I need-"
"Elena, don't fight me with this, please." She saw the plea in his eyes and nodded. He had been through a lot and she didn't wanted to worry him more, plus she did felt really tired. But if they thought they were keeping her out of this plan, they were so wrong. She was going to see Klaus fall.
"Fine." She whispered.
"Caroline, can take you to our room?" He said before pressing a kiss to Elena's forehead and she couldn't stop her heart fluttering at the words 'our room'.
"Hold on? You think you two are going to sleep in the same room?" Stefan said stepping into the conversation.
"Yes, you have a problem with it?" Damon's stony eyes glared at the boy who didn't flinch at the power of his stare.
"Well yeah, she should stay with Caroline."
"Oh come on Stefan, she's already pregnant. What else can happen?" Caroline said rolling her eyes and taking Elena's hand. "Let's go Lena."
"But Damon-"Elena gripped Damon's hand not wanting to let go of him.
"It's all right. I'll be there in a second. I promise." He whispered before kissing her lips softly. Stefan rolled his eyes and Caroline almost turned into goo on the floor.
"Okay." Elena answered breathlessly once he broke apart their kiss.
Elena disappeared behind the door with Caroline while Damon walked to table and sat next to Ric ignoring the cold stares Stefan was giving to him. He already had enough troubles to be worrying about an over protective best friend.
"I think we all know how important the timing is in this deal." Sheila said while looking at the remaining people in the room.
"What do you need?" Alaric asked.
"I'll give you a list with all the things that we need to get to be able to perform the spell." The elder woman said while looking at Ric. "I'll trust you'll be able to find everything."
"Of course." He answered.
"I could help." Stefan suggested.
"No, it's too dangerous. Klaus knows you too, you need to stay here." Bonnie said softly at him.
"You'll also need to keep a low profile Damon." The elder witch said while looking at the blue eyed man. "At this time Klaus already knows Elena left and he's a smart guy…he'll know she's with you."
"Fine." Damon muttered, he was not happy about the idea of staying locked up, hiding like a rat.
"And where will we be performing the spell?" Stefan asked.
"That's the tricky part." Bonnie said with a worried tone. "We'll have to drag Klaus here. This is sacred ground, protected by the witches, the only place we'll be protected while performing the spell."
"And what's the problem with that?" Stefan said.
"Do you really want me to answer that?" Ric muttered.
"We can't just go ask him to come." Bonnie said. "He'll know is a trap."
"There's only one way Klaus would come here without suspecting anything." Sheila said while looking at Damon.
"No way." He said trough gritted teeth.
"What?" Both Ric and Stefan asked at the same time.
"It's the only way Damon." The elder witch said.
"No way, you will not use Elena as bait."
"What?" Stefan asked. "For the first time I agree with him. It's too dangerous."
"Exactly, how do we know he won't hurt her?" Damon said.
"Don't you trust me?" Sheila asked and Damon could do nothing but stare at her.
"Damon, it's the only way. I promise you that Elena would suffer no harm." Bonnie said softly. "I'll make sure of it." The young girl tried to reason with him.
Damon didn't know what to do. He wasn't willing to risk Elena. But wasn't she at risk already? If the spell worked out they could be rid of Klaus in a matter of days.
"Damon?"
"We'll have to consult this with her, if she agrees…" He trailed off, his mind was already worrying with the worst case scenario.
"Fair enough." Sheila said.
"When will we be doing this?" Ric asked.
"It will be full moon in three days." Bonnie said. "The perfect time to perform the spell."
Damon couldn't believe what he was hearing. Three days? His torment was going to finally end. He had waited a long time for this, in fact he never thought that this was possible. For the first time in his long existence he was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
"If everything goes the way we expect…we'll be free in three days." He whispered absently, he could feel the hope expanding in his chest and felt scared at the same time. What if things didn't work out?
"You don't have to worry about anything Damon." Sheila said sensing his distress. "We'll succeed." She tried to reassure him even when she wasn't so confident. The boy needed some kind of hope in such hard moments.
The truth was they were facing an evil so big that she didn't know what the outcome would be. She could only pray for the best, pray for justice.
Damon walked towards the bedroom, he couldn't disappear the uneasy feeling in his gut. The idea that the plan didn't worked out and their life ended tragically once again was unbearable, wouldn't it be easier just to run away like they always did? Not to risk everything.
"Aww and we're gonna buy her all kind of cute stuff." He could hear the voice of Elena's best friend through the door.
"Or him." He heard Elena's voice.
"Yeah." He could hear the excitement in the blonde girl's voice. "But jeez your mom is going to be so pissed."
"Don't say that, I'm already dreading it." Elena's voice was full of fear. "She'll disown me but you know what, I think I don't care."
His chest filled with joy at hearing the girl's conversation. A child. They were having a child, that's why he couldn't run anymore. Because eventually Klaus would find them and their kid will suffer his wrath. He had to end this, once and for all.
He knocked on the door and when Elena told him it was opened he turned the doorknob to reveal the girls lying on the big king size bed.
"I guess that's my cue to leave." Caroline said with a smirk on her face, she pressed a kiss to Elena's cheek and got up from the bed. "Don't wear her out Salvatore." She joked with him on her out, he couldn't help but smile, he actually liked the blonde girl but he couldn't say the same about Stefan of course.
"Hey." Elena said softly from the bed.
"Hey." He answered and started walking towards the bed. "How you're feeling?" He asked before climbing into the bed next to her.
"I'm better." She answered. "It's just it was all too much, too much of a shock…but I think I'm working it out." He could see the ghost of a smile on her lips and his heart almost stopped beating when he spotted her right hand caressing her stomach lightly.
"You're happy about this, right?" Elena asked him while staring at her flat stomach.
"How could I not be?" He said and she lifted her eyes to stare at him. There was just so much love in those blue eyes that for a minute she was scared, scared of the length of his love for her. "Aren't you happy?" Damon asked with an edge of worry on his voice.
"I am." She stated. "It's not happening the way I expected it…no one expects to be pregnant at eighteen but, it's a baby Damon." Her brown eyes stared at him in wonder. "I have a little life growing inside me." He smiled at her and pressed his hand on her stomach right next to hers.
"I know. It's our baby." He whispered before pressing a soft kiss onto her cheek.
"Ours." She whispered.
Even though she didn't know about this baby until a few minutes ago now she felt incredibly protective of her or him. She wondered if that was how all mothers felt? She knew that she would do anything in her power to protect the innocent kid growing inside her.
"Did she suffer?" Elena asked in such a low voice that he had to make a big effort to hear her.
"Excuse me?"
"The baby, Isabella." Her voice was a bare whisper "You see, Theodore was drowned…so I know that he probably was in a lot of pain." Her voice broke down as she gripped Damon's hand. "But did she suffered? "
"I-"Damon took a deep breath and pressed his forehead to Elena's ear, he was now lying on his side "She was sleeping…I don't- I think she didn't even feel it." He gave her the best answer he could. She only nodded in response.
"We're not gonna let him win, right?"
"No, we're gonna put him down. Once and for all." He said with conviction.
"I hate him Damon. I hate him so much." She turned her head to the side so was able to stare at him and he saw in her eyes all the anger she was carrying.
"I know. I hate him too." He said "But we're gonna make him pay, I promise." He placed a kiss on top of her head.
"I know that there's all kinds of stuff we still need to discuss." She said. "I still need to speak to my mom, let her kill me." Damon chuckle at this "But can we go to sleep right now?"
"Absolutely." He said with a smile.
"Can you hold me?" She said in a voice that reminded him of how young she truly was.
"You don't even have to ask." He looked at her tenderly.
He reached for a blanket resting on a chair next to him and covered their bodies with it "Your feet are cold." She said with a smile. He was spooning her, his face buried in her hair and their legs tangled under the blanket.
"Never bothered you before." He said with a smirk.
"I love you." She said softly.
"I love you too." He said before kissing her cheek softly. She didn't have enough with that so she turned her head a little bit so he was able to kiss her lips. "Now go to sleep angel." He placed another kiss to her lips. "I'm here to protect you" She smiled and placed her head on the pillow once again.
She was finally going to get a good night of sleep.
