Chapter 10: Truth and Consequences
Renesmee
After telling Erica the whole story, I was completely left breathless. There was no lying how hard it was to tell my best friend about the situation I was in. Firstly, it brought angry emotions yearning inside of me and secondly, Erica was the kind of person who wouldn't take anything to heart, but when it came to her friends or family she'd definitely step in.
I couldn't help but feel like everything was beginning to fall apart little by little and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
"And-and that's that." I concluded and leaving a breathless, wide eyed Erica speechless.
"Are you serious?" She questioned, eying me up and down. She was completely shocked by all of this and I knew she was going to give me one hell of a tough time with this. I nodded.
"I know its crazy I know, I can't believe he'd do that too." I cried out. She scoffed.
"Renesmee…why didn't you tell me this sooner?" she asked as she came over to sit next to me. I shrugged.
"I don't know, I mean wouldn't that just get you in trouble?" I asked her.
"Come on Renesmee. I think you and I both know nobody and definitely Riley cannot touch me." She replied. I giggled at how true that statement was. I couldn't help but remember the time she went to her first karate class –which she dropped out from because she broke her name– and at that same day, gave Riley the boot in an area where no man should be touched for being a jerk to her. Huh…good memories.
"Yeah…" I said softly. "I don't know what to do. I mean what if I see him again?" I said.
"Hold on?" She said and froze. "He's still out there? And you don't know where he is?" She questioned.
"I have no idea Erica! But I'm quite sure he's here in Tacoma! Somewhere!" I sighed out in frustration.
"Okay what do you family say about this?" She asked. I looked at her with a small smile as to say 'I kinda left that part out'. Her eyes widened. "Oh my god Renesmee!" she exclaimed getting up from the couch and threading her fingers through her chestnut brown/blonde hair.
"I know. But after all that's happened, I didn't want to add more stress over their shoulders."
"What did the cops say?" She asked. I gave her a small sigh. "This crazy psychopath is after you and your daughter and you didn't call the cops?"
"I shouldn't bring the cops into this yet Erica. I can probably convince him to stop what his doing. I mean, he did say Demetri wanted to see me."
"I can't believe you even believe what he says." She sighed. "And I also cannot believe you're still keeping in contact with him!" She scolded me.
"He got my numbers! What was I supposed to do?" I replied. She sighed and flicked her phone on and began dialing. "Erie, what are you doing?"
"You promised not to call the cops. I didn't." She replied gruffly. I snatched the phone away.
"It's okay, I don't need the cops. I can get help from my uncles, or something."
"Everyone except for the cops, great idea Ness!" she replied sarcastically. She was right. "I'm guessing you haven't told Jacob yet too?" She asked. I sighed.
"Erica…"
"Renesmee, you've got to talk to Jacob about this. He can help." She insisted.
"But won't that just get everyone hurt?!" I asked.
"Renesmee, listen to me." She began. "You have to tell him. You've got to tell him. Tell him!"
"Okay, okay I will." I replied.
Erica was right. I had to start telling people about this. I knew I had to tell Jacob about this first thing. But I couldn't help but feel I'm putting his entire life in jeopardy.
I had to do something about this and fast…
"Anyway…So what's up with the whole Nahuel/Embry love triangle?" I teased, completely changing this unpleasant subject. She smiled.
"Oh I wouldn't consider it as a 'love triangle'. More like a 'fling-angle'." She said casually. I raised my eyebrow.
"Fling-angle?" I questioned. She smiled and gave me a small wink of an eye.
"I still got it," She replied. I sniggered. Oh Erica…
… …
Jacob's (POV)
I was currently at the coffee shop downtown with my fellow policemen, Embry, Seth and Chris as we used our lunch break discussing our lives at the moment and be commenting on every mistake in this diner. I know, we probably sound like snobbish teenage girls right now.
"I don't know guys. It's just something about this coffee makes me want to regurgitate." Seth said with a disgust expression on his face as he took his napkin and wiped his mouth. He then frowned as he pulled out something from his mouth. It turned out to be a worm. He shrugged and put it back in his mouth and began chewing it. We all groaned in disgust.
"Ah come on dude! And you still eat it!" Embry groaned, whilst Chris just sat the preventing himself from puking in his mouth.
"It's surprisingly delicious." Seth replied licking his lips.
"I think I just swallowed my own vomit." Chris said.
"Aren't you going to complain for that shit?" I asked Seth. He shrugged.
"What's there to complain about, we all know this shit diner slash coffee shop slash hobo playground is not as awesome as Bertolino's" He said. We all agreed in unison. He wasn't wrong.
"Or Greener Bean's Coffee…Mmm," Embry said in delight.
"Try Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, now that's the place to be." Chris said and it went to a full on conversation about coffee houses. I rolled my eyes. Old people and we're supposed to be 27! Come on!
"You guys really aren't accustomed to holding proper conversations are you?" I asked them. They shrugged.
"I guess we're random that way."
"And by the way guys. Mochas Latte is way better." I said.
"Oh, of course you'd say that because that's where your little girlfriend went to." Embry teased as he made kissy faces.
"I think we're all starting to realize she's controlling your life now Jacob. That's why we're holding up an intermission!" Seth said proudly.
"Uh dude. I think it's called an 'intervention'" Chris corrected.
"That too," Seth replied.
"Guys come on. Nessie's not controlling my life. She's too perfect for that." I said with a small smile. This caused all the guys to groan.
"Stop, before I have the sudden urge to kill myself!" Embry said. I gave him an eye roll.
"Yeah dude. I think we're all starting to think you're kind of leaving our little pack you know."
"Yeah, it's always been the four musketeers and without you we're just plain ole three…" Chris said.
"Gee thanks for including me guys, you're such great friends." Quil said as he took a seat by us. The entire gang erupted in cheers.
"Quil, we were just talking about you!" Seth said giving him a light punch on the shoulder. He growled back.
"Oh I'm sure you did." He said rolling his eyes. That's when Embry's phone vibrated and he grabbed it and began reading the message.
"Damn it!" He muttered.
"Yo dude. Is everything okay?" I asked.
"Yeah I guess. My landlord just told me that I'm fucking overdue on my fucking payment." He seethed.
"Whoa. Don't throw the cussing card dude,"
"You don't want to go back to the anger management class again don't you?" Seth teased. Embry glared at him.
"When is pay day coming up?" He groaned.
"Hey, you could always crash at my crib or Erica's since you two are…"
"Having sex?" He said. "Oh yeah, the sex is quite amazing hey. Who knew I'd end up with your girlfriend's best friend?" He chuckled. I frowned.
"I was going to say since you guys are closer now…" I said giving him the evils slightly. Getting to know Erica I've became quite protective over her. Anything Nessie loves I'd protect.
"Oh…but anyway, I might get the promotion before that even happens." He said. The promotion Embry was talking about was the promotion of becoming Sheriff of the TDP. Sheriff Deaton has announced his retirement which will begin next year. He wanted to retire not only because he had to but because he just found out his daughter had Leukemia. Bless that little girl's soul.
"I doubt you'd get that Embry. Jake here is one of the best cops outta all of us, I think he stands a better chance," Seth said as he gave Em a thumbs down.
"Sethy boy's right. He deserves it more than all of us here." Chris said and Seth growled as he said 'Sethy boy'.
"I told you never to call me Sethy Boy Kryptonite!" He snarled. I frowned in confusion.
"Kryptonite?" asked Chris. "That doesn't even rhyme with my name," He sniggered. Seth gritted his teeth and groaned.
"Ugh! If I were 4 years younger now, I'd punch you!"
"What? That doesn't even make sense dude!" Quil said.
"Well it does to me!" Seth replied taking a sip of his coffee. Seth was one of those awkward friends you'd find in a group. He'll never change. My thought process was pulled away when my phone began to ring.
"Uh oh, little Ms. Girlfriend Masen is calling Jakey Mckittens." Embry teased as he made kissy faces at me. The gang laughed.
"Oh shut up!" I said and checked the Caller ID to see Sheriff called me. "I'll be back." I informed the gang and went out of the store to answer the call.
"Sheriff Deaton?"
"Jacob. I'm glad I could get hold of you."
"Is there a problem sir?" I asked. He took a deep breath as he paused before answering.
"Oh no, I just wanted to make sure you're not busy to come down the office so I can have a talk with you." He said. Holy shit! Am I getting the promotion? I couldn't help the inner '5 year old' Jakey inside of me to make a little jump.
"Yes! Oh yes!" I exclaimed. That was very subtle. I cleared my throat. "I mean, I'll be right down sir."
"Excellent. I guess I'll see you in a few." He said and hung up. This could very well be my big break!
I went back to the diner and back to the laughing gang. I took out a few dollars and placed it on the table.
"There you go dudes. Sheriff wants to see me ASAP, so if you'd be kind enough to pay for me will ya?" I said.
"Oh I knew he'd get the promotion!" Seth mused.
"Hey don't be so sure. That could've been Renesmee calling for a little action if y'all know what I'm saying." Quil teased as he wiggled his eyebrows. All the guys groaned.
"You're really sick Quil."
"Congrats dude!" Chris said.
"I didn't get it yet so don't get rid of me that easily. But if I do then a rounder on me tonight right!" I said to them as I back away.
"Atta boy!" they called back.
I was getting quite excited for this day…
… …
Renesmee's (POV)
"You did incredible today Rosie!" I praised my daughter as we bathed her. Today was her first recital practice. She was playing the role of Tinkerbell in her school's upcoming dance/play. All parents were cordially invited to watch their children practice for the recital that was only two weeks away.
Rosie and I have been talking about this day for quite some time now. I don't really know what got her so interested in dancing and all but it might've been the fact that I liked it so much.
Watching her dance so gracefully –for a 3 year old– and act and sing so amazingly made me so proud. But at the end of it all, all I wanted for her is to be happy and have fun. And she did exactly so.
"Thank you mommy," She said with a wide smile which showed off her open tooth. I couldn't help but chuckle at how cute she looked.
"I'm sure you'll do great at the recital honey." I said as I washed off her hair. She just nodded as she played with her little dolly.
"Mommy, I'm a wittle various." She whispered to me. I frowned at first but soon chuckled at what she meant to say.
"Oh Rosemaree, I think you mean 'nervous'." I chuckled. She giggled. I never called Rosie by her full name so it was a little weird. "And there's nothing to be nervous about baby. You're amazing and very lovable. Why wouldn't anyone love you." I said giving her a little tickle in the stomach. She giggled.
"Thank you mommy," She replied. I smiled back as I plunged the water out and wrapped her in a towel. "Oh! Is Uncle Jakey going to be there?" She asked.
I haven't really thought about that yet. I haven't even told him about the recital yet. I'm sure he'd love to go right?
"I sure hope so Tinkerbell." I said.
We dressed her up in her PJ's since we weren't planning on going anywhere later and we'd probably just order food when Jacob comes over.
"Where's Auntie Erie mommy?" Rosie asked.
"I don't know. I think she's out with a friend." I said with an amusing smile on my face. Ugh! Embry and Erica today…
If I had a penny at how many times I predicted which guy she'd be going out with for the day and it turned out to be Embry, I'd have…One…two…three…A lot of pennies.
"But I thought she was your friend mommy?" Rosie said with a small frown.
"Yes she is baby. But she's a special kind of friend." I told her.
"Oh like you and Uncle Jakey?" She asked. Uh…how should I explain that?
"Yeah, exactly." I said with a smile. She threw her small fist in the air and danced around because she was happy she got it right. Oh my baby…
The knock on the door broke us away from our moment together. I got up and walked all the way to the door to answer it to see Jake standing outside. I smiled as I opened the door.
"Hey you're early." I said reaching on my tiptoes to give him a hug. "I thought you'd be here in an hour. Oh and you didn't use the key?" I asked raising my eyebrow.
I kinda maybe sorta gave Jacob the key to my apartment. I mean I know that it's kind of a super next step in our relationship and I should be wary of the consequences but come on. I love the guy so doesn't that matter? (First time I ever thought that and not regretting it).
He gave me a small chuckle. "Nah, I just thought knocking would've been better." He replied as he walked into the living room.
"Oh…" I said with a frown. Something about Jacob's expression wasn't entirely convincing that he was happy. Something was bothering him and I didn't know what.
"Is everything okay?" I asked him as I followed him. He sighed and just shook his head.
"Nothing at all," He replied staring at the kiddies show Rosie was watching and collapsing onto the couch.
"Okaaay…" I began straining the words and took a seat on his lap. "Do you mean 'nothing at all' there is something up or 'nothing at all' you don't want to tell me what's up?"
"How was your day?" He asked, completely changing the subject. I took that as a sign that he didn't want to talk about it.
"Um…it was good, Rosie's first recital practice was today." I told him. He smiled.
"For a play?"
"Yeah, she's playing the role of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan. The kid's so excited." I said with a light chuckle.
"I'm sure she'll do great." He said softly. "Where is she anyway?"
"She's too preoccupied in her tea party." I told him.
"I hope I get a daughter like her." He blurted out. This took me totally off guard. He must've seen my expression because he began chuckling. "I mean in the future."
"You want kids?" I asked him a little uncomfortably. I don't know but something about this conversation became awkward for me. Every time Jake and I talked about kids I couldn't help but get a stir in my stomach and always pictured Jacob holding a baby. The sight was cute of course but the weird thing was I pictured him holding our baby. Isn't that creepy?
"Yeah I guess. I mean it isn't a priority yet but yeah…" He said. I nodded.
"Oh…" I said. "I think I'm ready to tell Rosie about us." I announced. He stared at me with confusion in his eyes.
"Are you serious?" He questioned. I nodded slightly, not trusting my voice. "But isn't she like 3?" He asked.
"Yeah but she's way smarter than you this mister!" He sniggered and nodded.
"Okay, if you're fully okay with it."
"I'm fully okay with it." I stated. I mean it shouldn't be that bad. She is a three year old after all…
"You're with mommy?" Rosie asked in confusion after telling her about Jacob and me's relationship. "But I thought you friends?"
"We are. But we're special kinds of friends." I said.
"So does that mean you and Auntie Erie are the same?" She asked.
"No, we're very close friends but we have our own special kind of friendship." I said awkwardly and gave Jacob a look to say 'Help me!'
"You see Rosie, your mother and Auntie Erica are best friends because they're girls and they love each other in a different kind of way like I love your mother and she loves me…" He said glancing at me for confirmation but instead I just gave him a blush. Of course I love you!
"So does that mean you're my new daddy?" Rosie asked with her eyes beginning to water. I just stood there shocked not moving a muscle. Rosie no!
Jacob took a deep breath and bent down to her level before answering.
"Look Rosie. I would never take your daddy's place. I can be your best friend and we can play 'the Little Mermaid' together."
"Glad you understand because no one will ever take his place, no one and not even you! You will never be my daddy." Rosie shouted before running away. I gasped as I watched my daughter run away and banging her door shut. I looked at Jacob to see he had a small hurt expression on his face. Oh no!
"Jake I…"
"No it's okay. I expected that one anyway." He said with a small chuckle. I gave him a sympathetic look.
"I'm sorry." I began but trailed off as I began walking to Rosie's room. I slightly opened the door to see Rosie collapsed on her bed with her face in her pillows. I walked slowly up to her and sat softly as I stroked her hair.
"Hey baby are you okay?" I asked softly. She shook her head.
"I miss daddy mommy." She replied maneuvering herself so she was in my arms. I wrapped them around her tightly. I hated seeing my daughter upset.
"I know baby, I miss him too."
"Why did he have to leave us mommy, I want my daddy back!" She cried in my chest.
"I want him back too baby but remember what I told you last time. That god has his own way of planning things. Also you have to know that daddy isn't gone. He's been with us for a long time. He's watching over us and smiling now at how grown up you are, he loves you so much Rosie and don't you ever forget that. He may not be with us physically but he is with us…in our hearts." I told her. She nodded in understanding.
"Do you still love him mommy?" She asked looking up at me. I nodded.
"Very much baby,"
"But how come you love Uncle Jake also?" She asked.
"Because Uncle Jake loves me so much, he wouldn't hurt me. He makes me happy and that's all daddy wanted for me and that's why I love them both. I'm pretty sure he loves you too little trumpet." I assured her.
"Really?" she asked.
"Yeah,"
"I'm sorry mommy." She cried out. I knew what she was sorry about. She was sorry about lashing out like how she did.
"It's okay baby…" I said. "Now let's go talk to Uncle Jake."
Rosie and I walked out of her room and too the living room where Jacob was standing. Rosie held tight of my hand.
"Rosie, I think you have something to say to Uncle Jake?" I said. She looked up at me before meeting Jacob's eyes.
"I'm sorry Uncle Jakey!" She said shyly.
"Oh Rosie, it's no biggie." He said. "But you know what will make me feel better? Is if you take this." He said and revealing a 'Totally Spies' kit bag. I widened my eyes at exactly the same time Rosie did. He shouldn't have done that!
"Mommy?" she said looking up to me. I contemplated for a second before nodding. I have to talk to Jake about this gift giving. She squealed and ran up to him.
"Thank you so much Daddy!" She exclaimed giving him a hug. Jacob's eyes widened.
Holy shit! Did she just say that! Shit! Shit! Wow! Shit!
"Um Rosie, why don't we get you to bed and you'll play with your new kit tomorrow,"
"But mommy!" she pouted.
"Ah ah, no buts missy, let's go." I warned. She sighed and began walking up to me, taking her kit with her.
"Say goodnight to Jake."
"Bye Uncle Jakey!" She said with a wave before we went to her room and tucked her in her comfy bed.
About a minute later, I left Rosie's room and walked back to the living room. Now I knew the real reason why Rosie reacted so fast when she found out about Jake and me's relationship and why she got upset when Jake said he wouldn't take her father's place. She saw Jake as a father figure and the thought of not having him as a father brought back memories of her real father that she never met.
When I reached the living room I didn't find Jacob but instead I found him standing by the kitchen counter.
"Oh there you are." I said. "Sorry about that, she just gets emotional when it comes to these things." I said. He nodded but didn't answer.
"What's up?" I asked him.
"Who's Riley?" He asked.
I froze. Uh oh! I didn't want Jacob to find out this way. I've been meaning to tell him but I just didn't know how.
"Jake…"
"I want you to tell me anything and everything about him…"
I have a lot of explaining to do…
… …
A/N: Yeah that was it I guess. I knew it was mushy and all but I hope you liked it.
Um guess what! I've finally made it to the regional finals in cross-country! Yay! Lol! Anyway…this clearly means I need to practice a lot and on top of that! I've got some exams coming up soon and I have to try juggling 4 stories at once. I hate to say this but I don't think I'll update as fast as I usually do.
