Hiro's Age: 6
Tadashi's Age: 12
/Sorry for the short chapter I swear it was longer..more notes at the bottom/
"Goodbye, losers! I would say 'see you in three months', but I'm moving up to the second grade!"
All the students in Mrs. Collins class had stopped packing away their various school supplies, to give Hiro a curious gaze.
Mrs. Collins herself gave Hiro a disapproving glance, as she continued checking the time, silently counting down the seconds until summer break.
Hiro stood alone bouncing on the balls of his feet impatiently, tempted to reach over and open the classroom door himself. Instead, his hands gripped his red backpack tightly, ignoring how heavy it was on his thin shoulders.
"Also, Hiro," Mrs. Collins had began, shooting said boy a flat look,"Just for saying a bad word you'll have to stay ten extra minutes after the bell rings."
His eyes rounded as he stared up at her in disbelief. He was nearly at a loss for words and spread his arms out wide, opening and closing his mouth several times.
"B-but loser isn't a bad word! I would've been in trouble for using it a long time ago!"
He received no response out of his clearly unimpressed teacher, as she pointed to the green time out chair over in the far corner of the room.
All the kids stared openly at him, some snickering, others giving him sympathetic looks. Hiro marched himself towards the chair, making sure to show his teacher an exaggerated frown, in hopes she would randomly change her mind. Of course, that wasn't how that had worked out because she had held her ground, only feeling slightly guilty for punishing one of her favorite students.
Just as Hiro had plopped down grumpily on the chair, with his back smashing roughly against his heavy backpack, the final bell had sounded.
All of his classmates had fled out, not sparing a single glance at Hiro or their previous teacher. They only briefly heard her shout "Have a wonderful summer!"
Hiro turned his head slightly, glancing over his shoulder at the door, with his bottom lip extended out. Should he make a run for the door? Or should he at least attempt to remain on her good side?
With a gulp and one last long thought, Hiro had made his decision.
He gripped the backpack tightly, hoping to ease the weight on his body, and as quick as he possibly could, he stood all the way up.
Before Mrs. Collins could even process what was happening, Hiro Hamada was already halfway out of the door, shouting a rushed string of apologies, and grinning wildly to himself.
Little did he know, Aunt Cass was eventually going to receive an extremely unpleasant phone call from her later that day.
Tadashi was getting frustrated with his T-shirt sleeves. No matter how much he attempted to scrunch them up, they would keep falling down, adding to the stifling heat he was already feeling outside. All he had wanted was a breeze of wind, to hopefully cool down his overheating body. But of course he had yet to learn how to roll up shirt sleeves properly.
He had eventually given up and fell onto the bench right by Hiro as they waited for the bus together.
"'Dashi, you always complained about how the cold weather bothered you so much. Now you can't even stand a little summer heat?"
Tadashi narrowed his eyes and glared daggers into the concrete below his feet.
"Gee, thanks, Hiro, you make me sound like a whiny baby. I don't like the weather that makes me sweat as soon as I step outside. I also don't like the weather that has the potential to freeze my fingers off, okay?"
Hiro just smirked, nudging Tadashi's leg with his small sneaker.
It was a calm, silent five minutes, until Hiro finally spoke up again,"So...what are we going to do this summer?"
Tadashi sent a thoughtful glance down at him, pondering carefully on what his answer should be.
"Eh, the same thing as every summer little bro. Sleeping, video games, and building things."
Hiro's mouth formed a tight thin line, as he nodded gently. This of course didn't go unnoticed by the ever observant Tadashi as he added,"Why? Did you have any other plans in mind?"
The six-year-old was in the midst of shaking his head 'no' when he suddenly came to a realization that this was going to be his first actual summer vacation.
"Tadashi! I think we should do other stuff as well. Like help Aunt Cass and go on San Fransokyo street adventures! We can even go swimming, or build a cleaning bot to help in the cafe."
'Dashi had raised an eyebrow, mulling over everything Hiro had suggested. With a hint of uncertainty, afraid he may somehow offend Hiro, Tadashi spoke,"That sounds fun and all...but any reason you seem to want to be productive on a summer break?"
Much to Tadashi's relief Hiro smiled, his tooth gap slightly visible," Tadashi, don't you see? This is my first ever summer break. All the years before I started school, months and seasons all seemed to squish together. Every day was a vacation to me-" He pauses, hearing the roar of the bus in the distance.
"You were always busy at school, and I guess I never really understood why you were excited about summer. I get it now, and I want to cherish all of my summer until August. I can't let my days waste away."
Tadashi stood up and stretched, making a baby dinosaur noise, before finally facing Hiro again, "Alright little bro. Whatever you want to do this summer, I'll be down with. Only because you'll be stuck in school with limited breaks up until you graduate from high school."
"Wait, what?!" Hiro had shouted, abruptly standing up, and nearly toppling over due to his overstuffed backpack.
Hiro Hamada glanced around wearily taking in his surroundings. Like usual for this time of day people were scattered all over the bus, giving the brothers odd stares here and there. Unsurprisingly, Tadashi remained unaffected by the curious people, as he fiddled with his cell phone to pass the time. Hiro on the other hand was already making direct eye contact, and sticking out his tongue at everyone.
"If there's one thing I'm not going to miss besides school," Hiro had started up, shifting closer to Tadashi,"It would be these smelly bus rides home."
Now that definitely caught the attention of almost everyone, including the bus driver, who happened to be a graying old man.
Tadashi, upon hearing Hiro's not too quiet opinion, gave a sheepish smile and apology on Hiro's behalf. He then sharply jabbed at his little brother's shoulder, trying his best to give the kid a warning.
Not exactly sure why he was getting in trouble for the second time that day, Hiro had just opted to stay quiet for the remainder of the ride home.
Summer break started out as any break normally would for Tadashi. He had finally managed to force his body to stay awake almost all night about a week into their free time. This time though, Tadashi had company in the form of his lovable kid brother. It was the first year Tadashi let Hiro stay awake this late with him.
Hiro had already developed bags under his eyes but refused to sleep, not wanting to miss a single moment of being with Tadashi.
It was currently 4:37 A.M., and neither of the boys wanted to succumb to the warmth of their blankets. They were currently in the middle of sketching out ideas for a new bot to start building.
"It can't be that big, Hiro. We don't have the money to go out and buy all of those parts."
Hiro shot Tadashi a flat look, barely visible with the dim lighting of Tadashi's desk lamp. The young boy crumpled up the paper and tossed it behind his body not too sure where it landed. Which caused 'Dashi to groan, because out of the two of them he was likely to be the one tidying up.
They laid flat on their backs, with Hiro's head near the room divider and Tadashi's head by his own desk. Nobody wanted to shift over to the bed because they both knew that the moment they fell on the soft mattress, they would drift to sleep.
Hiro let his chubby cheek rest on the cold wooden floor, as he absently tapped on his stomach. His eyelids were already fluttering down against his own will until 'Dashi's voice broke the silence,"What if we modify the vacuum cleaner?"
Hiro sat up slowly, rubbing at his tired eyes,"What would we do with the vacuum? Make it smaller?"
Even with barely any source of light in the room, Hiro could still see the hopeful smile spreading across Tadashi's face. The elder Hamada was already up and stretching, even bouncing in place.
"That's exactly what we're gonna do."
The brothers had made several trips up and down the stairs. It was difficult using only Tadashi's phone light and having Tadashi be the only one to haul the vacuum cleaner upstairs to their room.
Together they had disassembled the cleaning device and had a small rolling base, with a canister attached in the middle. Instead of using the long handle that was meant for the full-length vacuum, Tadashi had convinced Hiro to work on a new shorter one.
"How about instead of a new handle, 'Dashi, we work on making it remote controlled?"
Not giving it another thought, Tadashi quickly agreed, jumping from his position on the floor to the container he kept spare parts in. He had pulled out a beaten up cardboard box, and dug through it, squinting to find what he needed.
"Yo, Hiro, can you shine my phone light in here?"
The six-year-old tiptoed through the mess of what was once Cass' vacuum cleaner just to get to that side of Tadashi's room. He fumbled around with the cell phone, and luckily was able to find the flashlight setting in the phone.
"Hey Hiro, how fast should we make it go? Because we need to make sure the dirt container won't fall over if it bumps into things. We also need to make sure the suction on the bottom of the cleaner, y' know, actually sucks things up."
Hiro nodded agreeing with everything being said, and curiously watched Tadashi sort through the oddly unorganized box.
"We could try to screw the base of the dirt holder in?" Hiro had suggested, trying his best to stifle a yawn.
"Mmm," Tadashi had hummed, unsurprisingly also stifling his own yawn.
'Dashi had stood up, kicking the box back under his bed, and moving around Hiro. For the first time in what might have been an hour, Tadashi fully took in Hiro's appearance. It was already nearing 6 A.M., and knowing their Aunt, they wouldn't be able to sleep all day as they had planned.
"Y'know what little bro? Let's just call it a night and start back up in the afternoon."
Hiro, on the inside, was cheering, but on the outside gave a thumbs up. Giving back Tadashi's phone, he found himself moving towards his older brother's bed. Tadashi rolled his eyes, placing all the parts that were in his arms down on his desk, and putting his phone to charge.
He switched off the lamp and let his body fall near Hiro.
The younger Hamada mumbled into the pillow,"I'd go to my bed, but I can't even feel my feet anymore. So goodnight 'Dashi."
"G'night, Hiro," Tadashi sleepily whispered back, not fighting against his heavy eyelids.
Cass was checking the clock, as she sat awkwardly at the kitchen table. She had searched all around the building, almost pulling out her hair in exasperation. Where in the world was the vacuum cleaner?! Maybe Hiro and Tadashi would be able to locate it? Speaking of which, it was already one in the afternoon and she hadn't heard a peep from her nephews all day. Which wasn't that odd, but they usually were up by now. Or at least Hiro should've been up by now and begging for food.
"Unless they were awake all night..." Cass had spoken aloud to herself.
She widened her eyes, biting the inside of her cheek as that idea suddenly didn't seem too ridiculous. Knowing those two, they would have stayed up all night doing random stuff!
She marched upstairs, with Mochi in tow, and poked her head into the room. The first thing she noticed was that Hiro was missing from his bed. Then looking towards the middle of the room something seriously caught her attention.
She gasped loudly, noticing a large pile of scraps which must have been her missing vacuum cleaner in the middle of the room.
"TADASHI! HIRO!"
Tadashi shot up from his bed, accidentally smacking Hiro right on his stomach. Which in turn caused the boy to squirm around and slowly sit straight.
Without even thinking Hiro had yelled,"Tadashi did it! I was just watching I swear!"
Aunt Cass held a hand to her face, mumbling under her breath as Tadashi furrowed his brows and glared at Hiro.
"Please, just make it work. We really cannot afford a new one right now. Especially when the old one wasn't even broken!"
The twelve-year-old scrubbed at his eyes, taking in the mess on the floor while Cass quietly left the room with a deep frown etched on her face.
"You're unbelievable, Hiro Hamada."
"And you need to fix the vacuum cleaner, Ta-da-shi Hamada."
Tadashi raised a brow,"Wait, aren't you going to help?"
"Just gimme five more minutes..."
Five minutes eventually turned into 3 hours of Hiro snoring lightly while Tadashi was close to the point of repeatedly smacking his head against the wall in frustration.
This was a great way to start off their summer together.
A/N: Its late both the chapter being two months late and myself posting this at 1 A.M. im kinda upset because i swear it was a lot longer than this. i also initially wanted to write about their entire summer in one go, but that obviously wasn't going to happen today. So i guess you'll just have to wait and see where that goes. I also have this really cool idea for the chapter after the next and i think its going to be amazinggg! So you should totally stick around for that.
Thanks for all the support and im actually really sorry if this chapter was lacking. I was in a weird funk where i couldn't write...can you believe this was my 3rd attempt at a chapter? Ugh...writing is hard haha!
Also i got a PM about reading and reviewing a story, so i did that. Like if you guys want me to read something of yours i will totally do it. Just let me know and if im not in the middle of writing for this story ill totally give yours a read. I don't like reading a story while im in the middle of writing my own because im weird and i think it'll influence my writing style..which it probably wont but im extra cautious tbh.
Anyways thats it, and i can't give you an actual day for the next update but im hoping it'll be soon.
