Mercedes woke up on her couch, still wearing the clothes from the night before. Her eyes were puffy and her face dry from the tears, but she still found herself holding on to the flowers Sam had given her, the beautiful arrangement that he had the nerve to present to her the night before in hopes that it would make all okay. Jerk. She spat bitterly before throwing the arrangement on the table. She sat up and stretched, letting out an exaggerated yawn, her eye's shifted to the front door, partly wondering if she would find him sitting there if she was to open it. She shrugged off the thought and walked to her window that overviewed the street. It was busy and sunny, birds chirped, it made her sick. There was nothing more that she wanted other than to sit on her couch all day, doing nothing but reading magazines, eating ice cream and watching the sad depressing movies that ended with the girl getting the guy. She sighed, that's not how this day was going to go at all. No, instead she had to get ready for her day, shower, throw on some make-up and a fake smile just to pretend that she enjoyed the company that Caleb supplied her with. For her, that was the new normal.

Mercedes stepped out of the shower to her phone going off like crazy. It was no surprise at all when she found out it was Kurt calling and texting like a mad man. Surely, this was the result of Sam running his mouth off to him, hoping that it would give him an upper hand on things. It wasn't going to work. She'd opened herself up to him, offered her love….well what would have been love and quite possibly still is love, either way, she was there to be his and he knew it, everyone did. Everyone being Kurt and Blaine, that is. She stared at the phone debating if she should allow it to go to voicemail or not. She had a vivid idea of how the conversation would go and in all honesty she had no interest in hearing it. Still, if she ignored the call, he'd just continue to call and eventually pop up at her door.

"Good morning, Kurt." She answered, dragging out his name.

The phone was silent on the other end. It was early and today wasn't the day for one of his weird calls.

"Kurt? Did you call just so I can hear you breathe or…?" She asked frustrated.

"Uh-"

She moved the phone from her ear and glanced at the screen, thinking she might of answered a different call, but there was no mistake, it was Kurt's number. She scrunched her face, that didn't sound at all like Kurt, his voice was deep and slightly raspy.

"Babe, are you sick or something?" She questioned, genuinely concerned.

"….Not Kurt."

Her arms fell to her side. It was him. It was just the thing a sneaky, no good, self centered….

"Mercedes?"

He spoke, cutting her mental rant short.

Her eye's glared at the screen, cutting it to bits."You have some nerve calling me! And from Kurt's phone? Who do you think you are, Evans?"

Sam winced, holding the phone a few inches from his ear. "I had to talk to you and I know you wouldn't have answered had I called you from my number."

"Damn skippy! I have nothing to say to you, I made that very clear last night after you ruined my date with that bimbo you had hanging on your arm!" She wasn't sure what'd possessed her to mention the woman from last night, but she didn't regret it. "I'm hanging up, Samuel!"

"Samuel? What? No! Mercedes please just hear me out!"

Her stare was fixed onto her feet. She partly wanted to know what it was that he wanted to say, but of that pushed out of her mind when she remembered how he left that day in the hospital, how he just gave up.

Mercedes rustled up the strength to say what she had to say, hoping it would end there."No, you hear me out, Samuel, that is your name right? Someone tries to help you and you push them away. Someone says they only want to be friends and you leave! News flash asshole, I didn't want to be your friend…" She admitted, her voice cracking as her tears began to fall. "I thought you would have came back for me. But let's be serious here for a second, you obviously didn't feel the same way I felt for you, so why would you come back? … Know what though? I'm over it now and I'm over you, have been for a while. I'm not going to let you come back into my life and mess everything up just so you can leave again…I can't do it. I won't do it. So whatever you have to say, shove it, because it doesn't matter. Not to me . Not ever again." She placed a hand over the speaker hoping that it muffled her cries. She promised herself she wouldn't allow herself to feel this way but here she was crying over him – for him- once again.

"… It was a test?"

She blinked a few times, allowing her tears to drop. "W-what?" The words slipped from her now swollen lips.

Sam paced Kurt's kitchen floor."You tested me instead of just telling me you wanted to be with me?" He repeated, this time with more depth in his voice.

So many things were running through his mind. Like how different everything would have been had she'd just been open with him. But who was he to talk, he'd done the same as she did. Kept secret how he really felt, the things he wanted with her. His back rested on Kurt's refrigerator and he thought back to the months that passed, the days he thought of her and what she was doing, who she was seeing…If she missed him.

"Does it really matter Sam?" She asked, raising her voice. "How long would it have lasted before you started thinking you could do better and decide to go find someone else? People don't just change, I told you that before and I was right. You're proof. "Her voice drifted. "I wasn't going to get my heart broken. I needed to be sure that I was enough for you to come back to and apparently I wasn't."

It stung him to hear her speak like this, to put down what they could've had before they even gave it shot.

"Mercedes that's not fair…" He replied, his voice low and riddled with sadness.

"It isn't Sam? Then tell me what's fair?"

The phone fell silent.

"If I knew that all you wanted from me was to prove myself then I would've done it. You're the one for me. I realize I should have told you this sooner but I'm telling you now. Doesn't that count for something?"

She choked back tears. He wasn't allowed to say these things to her, to make her feel like she actually mattered to him when she knew that she didn't. "It means shit! Do you hear me, Samuel? That all it means now, shit. If you wanted it to mean something then you should of said all of this back when it mattered." The words came out harsher than anticipated, but she was far too angry to care."I'm with someone now. I don't know what you expected for me to do? Leave him and run into your arms? No. I'm not doing that. Because as much as he gets on my nerves, and lord knows that he does, I at least know what I'm getting with him…. "She bit down on her lip contemplating on her next words. "I'm going to accept his proposal so it's probably best that you go back to wherever you moved to and just leave me the hell alone."

"What!" Sam and Kurt shouted in unison.

Kurt's eyes widened in fear, she couldn't do this. He snatched the phone away from Sam praying that the nonsense his friend was spewing out was nothing more than a desperate attempt to upset Sam.

He shooed Sam out of the kitchen and firmly placed his hands on his hips. "Mercedes, I really hope that you aren't serious. You can't marry Caleb! It's not right and you know it. This guy is pouring his heart out to you and you're going to choose Caleb? Really, Mercedes? I know he messed up but this is a little extreme." He reasoned.

Her eyes narrowed at the sound of his voice."You! You don't get to say anything to me about this! You're supposed to be my best friend and on my side, but instead you choose him, why? Because of the stupid, sad, crush you have on him? Really, Kurt, it was cute at first now it's just pathetic."

Kurt was taken aback. Flashbacks of their college years played through his mind as she spoke. Just like back then, he was only trying to help, he didn't want her making a decision that she would regret, and it was one she would regret, that was for certain.

"Mercedes, that's not what this is. I am on your side…" He replied. "But you have to understand –"

"That's exactly what this is Kurt! Always the one to tell me what's what! Who not to date, who not to trust! You're not perfect you know? Despite what you think, I know how to make my own decisions. For all I know marrying Caleb is just the thing I need to do in order to finally be happy."

"Was I wrong about Shane?"

Hearing the mention of Shane stung more than what she could ever imagine. There was no more love for him, she never thought about him or wondered 'what if', he was just a distant memory that she kept stored far away. In yet the one mention of him pulled at her heart more than what she'd ever like to admit. "Wow, Kurt…. You've just been waiting to throw that one in my face, haven't you?" She sniffled. "I – I'm going to go now. Caleb is on his way. I prefer to spend my time with someone who actually gives a damn about me." Hanging up the phone, she threw it across the room and sat on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.

Her best friend was no longer her friend and the guy she really wanted to be with didn't love her, so why not marry someone who she knew for a fact did love her? Someone that she wouldn't bother questioning and wondering if she's good enough for. Caleb wasn't all that bad. He had his looks, which were fair and he was smart which was something she'd like to consider when it came to the thought of them having children, then again, to have children she would have to have sex with him, which is something she just couldn't bring herself to doing. "I'll make myself do it." She said to herself as she dried her eyes. "I can and will be happy, dammit!"

"You fix this!" Kurt yelled, hitting Sam with a bag of rice cakes. "You go and tell her you love her or else she's going to marry that twig in a suit and then I'll be best-friendless because you and your dumb lack of communication!" He swatted at him once more before going to pour a shot.

"Ouch! Okay, okay, I get it I need to fix this!" He yelped, rubbing the sore spot on his arm. "Why would she marry him…Does he love him?" He asked curiously, holding onto hope that she truly didn't.

Circling the rim of his glass with his finger, Kurt shook his head. "No…. She doesn't…But that's not saying she won't put on a front and make him believe that she does." He sighed thinking about his bestfriend "But I guess that what happens when assholes that you're in love with fall back down from thin air, you tend to do dumb shit." Kurt snapped, taking down his drink then pouring another."You sir –" He stood and pushed Sam towards the door. "You're officially eighty sixed from my house until you fix this and get me my bestfriend back." Grabbing Sam's keys and cell phone, he shoved the objects into his hands."Now get out." He pointed at the door smiling sweetly.

Sam pouted."God, you can be mean." He laughed, snatching Kurt's shot out of his hand and taking it himself. Smiling, he saluted him goodbye and left.

Mercedes sat in Caleb's grandmother's house a nervous reck. She'd never met the woman in yet the elderly lady sat across from her staring with judgmental eyes through her thick bifocal glasses that sat on just the tip of her nose. The woman let out a strong heavy breath before rolling her eye's and sitting up in her arm chair." You want somethin' to drink girl." She asked in an unpleasant tone. Mercedes waved off the offer and smiled."No thank you, ma'am. I'm fine." The older woman raised an eyebrow. "Mhm… You sure is a pretty young thang. So what's in it for you?" Mercedes furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. In it for me? She silently repeated the question to herself. She didn't want anything from this fool. Hell had Sam not shown up she wouldn't even be sitting here preparing herself to accept a proposal to a marriage with a guy she has so little interest in. Just as she was about to answer, the woman spoke again."Is it the money? Or is it just his good looks? We both know he's a one helluva catch to someone who looks like – well like you." The woman spat as she gestured her hand over Mercedes' frame then looking off to the side in disgust. Mercedes scoffed. There were so many names and curses that went through her mind about the old hag, but being the respectful, thoughtful, lady that she was, she decided to take the high road and refrain from those insults. Mercedes cleared her throat as she ironed out her rose colored skirt with her hands. "I'm sorry but I think you got me confused with one of the tramps he used to fool around with. I'm not like that nor have I ever been and in all honesty, Ma'am, he ain't all that." She finished smiling sweetly at the woman. Exiting the room, she walked past the old woman and gave her a "hmph" as she continued to the porch where Caleb was talking on the phone.

She stood by not allowing her presence to be known. A few laughs and giggles made her suspicious as to who he was talking to. He walked in circles with his head down, smiling ear to ear, like someone was telling him everything he wanted to hear. She walked out a little further and heard the word "Baby" slip from his mouth. Mercedes stood behind him with her arms firmly crossed and waited for him to turn her way.

Caleb continued smiling goofily into the phone until he finally became face to face with Mercedes."I-uh-I gotta' go" He said, hurriedly hanging up the phone and slipping it in his pocket. "Hey baby!" He greeted holding out his arms.

Mercedes scoffed. He must have taken her for a fool; she knew all too well what was going on, it wasn't anything new to her. Not giving him a second look, she turned and stormed off, she would be dammed if she was going to continue to stand there and be treated like she was nothing, not again, not after what happened between her and Shane.

Caleb picked up the pace and soon caught up with her. "Wait, wait a minute!"He pleaded walking up to her."I don't know what you think I was doing or who you think I was talking to, but it was just my nephew."

Her look softened and her arms fell to her side."Really?" She asked feeling silly. She could only imagine how she must of looked to him, storming off like that.

"Really." He replied grabbing her hand.

She fought the urge to pull her hand away and instead walked closer to him making the space between them smaller. She looked off to the side and giggled. "I'm sorry…" She said, in what she hoped to be a sweet voice. She rolled her eyes at herself as a wave of repugnance washed over her. "So…"She started flirtatiously. "I've been thinking about your proposal aaaand…"

Caleb swallowed hard as he turned to her with wide eyes and an even wider smile."Does this mean?"

Mercedes nodded.

"Yes! Mercedes Jones you've just made me the happiest man on earth! I love you so much!" Caleb showered her with kisses and pulled the ring out of his back pocket.

"You just carry that around?" She questioned as he placed the ring on her finger.

The question flew right by him. Caleb began pacing back and forth as he went through his phone scrolling through his contacts "Okay, so let's go tell my gram gram first and then we can tell the rest of my family and then yours!"

As if it were a reflex, her face scrunched. She didn't want to tell his "gram gram" or any other member of his family for that matter. If she could have it her way this whole mess would be a secret kept locked away in a box.

"You can go tell her yourself! I get the feeling that she doesn't like me too much." She confessed fiddling with her fingers. "Apparently I have to be "in it" for something. Her words, by the way."

"I'm sorry, babe. I'm sure she means nothing by it. She's just a mean old woman. Always have been so don't take it personal."

She crossed her arms. "Well I do take it personally! I don't care how old that hag is! I won't allow her to talk to me like that and if she does it again I'm going to tell her where she can stick her judgmental ass comments and if you're going to be my husband then you need to have my back. Gram gram or not I'm going to be your wife and this shouldn't be okay with you. Period."

Caleb lifted his hands in surrender."Okay, okay! You're right. It won't happen again and if it does I'll talk to her. I promise."

"Yeah you better." Mercedes said while walking to her car.

"Baby wait!" He yelled running to her and grabbing her by the arm. "You're leaving so soon? I wanted you to meet my cousin. He's on the way here."

"I have a consultation to get to. I can't." She lied. "Maybe next time, okay?"

Caleb nodded and kissed her on the cheek."Shane is gonna' love you!"

She stopped cold in her tracks."Sh- shane?" She repeated, her stomach clenching and twisting itself into a fist. Mercedes closed her eyes, burning her eyes, praying that it was nothing more than a crude coincidence, that this Shane that Caleb was talking about isn't the same Shane from her past. She took a seat in her car and stared down at the ground. She needed to know. "Tinsley?"

"Yeah! That's him! What? You see the resemblance?" He laughed caressing his beard.

The confirmation was more than she could take. Flashes of that night and the things he said to her filled her head. "I …I got to –"She tried to finish but her chest began to tighten. "Go...I have to go." Mercedes slammed her car door and drove off unsure of where she was going.

After putting some distance between her and Caleb she pulled to the side of the road and wept uncontrollably. She cried harder than she had in years. All the fear, hurt, disgust and insecurities came rushing back at the news that Shane would be in the same city as she was. Clenching her chest and closing her eyes. The world seemed to be turning against her, first it was Sam and now Shane, all she wanted was for it to all go away for things to go back to the way they were before Sam ever came into her life.

Pulling her phone from her purse, she was forced to call the one person that she'd just sworn off, she only could pray that he didn't swear her off too.

"Oh, look who it is!" He sang. "If it isn't Miss I don't need help from the fabulous Kurt Hummel! What can I do you for, lady?"

"Kurt!" She broke, sobbing heavily and trying to catch her breath.

The snide look on his face fell once he heard the cry come from the other end of phone. "Mercedes, sweetie what's wrong?"

"Shane…"

"Shane?" He asked stunned and taken back at the mention of the dreadful name that belonged to an even more dreadful person. "I don't understand. What about Shane?" He asked while searching for his keys."Mercedes if you don't talk to me then I can't help you."

Her mouth was dry and she was becoming more and more dizzy as her breath continued to quicken.

"Mercedes please calm down, you're going to pass out if you don't and I have you doing that because I need you to tell me where you are!" No matter what words were exchanged earlier in the day, he wanted nothing more than to be there for his friend just as he'd always been.

Mercedes calmed herself down and looked at her cross streets." Redbrook and Kings Point…"She answered wiping her eyes."Kurt…I'm sorry."

"It's okay, babe. Thick and thin you're stuck with me no matter how crazy you get…"

"He's here Kurt, what am I going to do if I see him? You saw how I was when you picked me up, just imagine how I'll be if I have to encounter the fool!"

A day had passed and Mercedes couldn't get over the fact that Shane was in the same city, breathing the same air and walking the same streets as she was.

"You can just solve all of our problems and just talk to Sam…Mercedes he really is sorry ."

"Now ain't the time Kurt."

"Then when will be the time, Mercedes? When you're walking down the aisle with Screech? It'll be wrong for you to just marry someone just to get rid of another person, not to mention the person you're talking about marrying is related to your ex psycho." Kurt took the seat next to her and rested his head on her shoulder. "If I didn't believe Sam was sincerely sorry do you really think I would pushing this so hard? I know he hurt you, but you have think about the kind of guy he was and what he was going through…seems you both attract crazies….anyway, all I'm saying is don't push away someone who really does care and maybe even loves you."

She shook her in disagreement."He doesn't care or love me, Kurt…He left and didn't come back. I cared and he didn't, that's that."

"If you cared so much then why didn't you go after him? It's not a one route you know? Mercedes, you told that man that you didn't want to be anything more than friends you left that little detail out when you were telling me about it."

Mercedes bit down on her lip."Okay…maybe I was a little unfair but that still doesn't give him the right to pop up at my door to throw flowers at me!"

Kurt's eyes narrow."He did not throw the flowers at you, Cedes." He laughed.

"So! That's my story and I'm sticking to it." She stated, crossing her arms.

The two sat quietly, listening to the cars pass outside. She sat thinking about Kurt's words and as usual, he was right. Maybe she was being a little too harsh towards Sam, he did deserve to tell his part of the story, without interruption. She huffed and found his name in her phone.

Mercedes: Hi, Sam… I know I was a little harsh earlier, but if you still wanted to talk then we can… That's all I wanted to say.

Mercedes: I'd understand if you changed your mind…

She sent the texts and sighed, wondering if he would reply back or if he was even still interested. She threw a duvet over Kurt and retreated to her room to call it a night.

Sam was lying in bed staring at the ceiling and thinking of ways to get Mercedes to talk to him or at least listen to him. He turned to side and kept his eyes locked on the clock, it was 3:47 AM and she was all he could think about. Just as he closed his eyes he heard his phone buzz. Reaching over to his night stand he glanced at the notifications and for a second thought he was dreaming, it was Mercedes and to his surprise, she wanted to talk. He smile and sat up in the bed to text her back.

Sam: You know I do. You can't get rid of me that easily.

Sam: I'll be over first thing in the morning, I'll bring coffee! :*

For the rest of the night he found it difficult to sleep. He tossed and turned and at one point found himself in his closet planning out an outfit to wear. He laid in bed once again staring at the ceiling, this time smiling wide and full of hope.

[The next morning...]

Thudd….

Thudd….

Thudd…

"What the hell…" Mercedes stirred awake to the familiar sound coming from the other side of her wall.

Thudd…

Thudd…

Thudd…

Throwing on her robe, she looked at the time and marched over to Sam's old apartment. Once there she was surprised to find the door open. She made her way down the familiar and stopped once she reached his old bedroom, what she saw shocked her.

"S-sam? What the -…Have you lost your damn mind? It's eight in the morning. And how did you get in here?"

He hoped off of the bed walked towards her."Good morning sunshine! I told you I was going to be here in the morning, you didn't get my text?"

"N-no…"

"Oh…well I did. I stopped by your apartment first and you didn't answer when I knocked so I decided to wake you up another way."

"By jumping on the damn bed? And again, how did you get in here?"

He shrugged."I own it…"

Her mouth formed a small "o". She led him back to her apartment and got dressed. She was nervous and unsure of what to expect from this talk, after all she was a newly engaged woman, regretfully newly engaged, so surely nothing too significant could happen between them.

Mercedes found Sam sitting in the kitchen looking at a magazine. "Hi.." She smiled taking the seat next to him.

"Hey." He smiled back.

Time passed and no words were spoken between them, they sat there silently staring at one another, smiling and blushing like two small smitten children.

Sam cleared his throat and shifted in his seat."So…."

"So?" Mercedes repeated.

"Soooo about why I left…" His eyes shifted from hers to his hands."When you told me that you didn't want to be anything other than my friend it kind of broke me… I mean there I was ready to start something with you and then you basically friend zone me, so I left. I swear I didn't know that you expected me to come back, Mercedes, had I known I would've done it in a heartbeat."

Mercedes sighed. "I was wrong too Sam. It was wrong of me to expect you to come back after telling you that… I guess those romantic comedies really got into my head."She joked."Thank you for the flowers they were beautiful."

"Were?"

She nervously fiddled with her fingers and giggled. "Yeah, I was so mad at you. I kind of threw them…Sorry."

"We'll just have to get you some more." He said placing his hand on top of hers.

She slid her hand from under his and tucked to her side, completely forgetting that she was still wearing Caleb's ring."Uh – s – so why did you move? I get that you were upset but did you really need to move?"

Sam's smile fell and embarrassment hit him after Mercedes removed her hand, obviously he was moving too fast. He stared at his coffee and blinked a few times before it finally registered that she was speaking. "Oh – I didn't move far, just on the other side of the bridge. I didn't want things to be awkward between us…And if I'm being completely honest, I didn't want to have to see you with other guys." He admitted.

Nodding her understandingly, she tried to work the finger off of her hand using the side of her leg."Right, awkward. I understand." She smiled nervously. "Ouch!" She cried. The ring was stuck and gap between the diamond and her finger pinched against her skin.

Sam's eyes widened at the sight of the sparkler."You said yes!?" He stood, pushing back his chair."You really went that far?"

"Sam, ouch!" She cried again, still trying to get the ring off."It was before Kurt talked to me. Before I realized I wasn't being fair."

He shook his head in disbelief. "Did you really want me to go away that bad that you agreed to marry someone you don't even like?"

Mercedes pouted. "I do like him…sort of….just a little bit…I mean he's tolerable…"Sam turned and started for the door."Okay, Sam, I hate him, alright?! Now can you pretty please help me get this thing off?" She begged.

"No."

"I'm sorry, no? What do you mean no?"

"I need to know where we go from here Mercedes."

"Where we go? It's kind of hard to talk about this when my circulation is being cut off of on my finger."

"Well you and your purple ring finger have a good day then."

"Okay, okay! Sam, we can talk about, you know, us. But we have to be open and honest with each other and the hussy you had at the restaurant has to be long gone."

"Sorry. I don't date married women." He teased.

"Sam!"

"Or engaged women…"

"I will break things off with Caleb later today, okay? Now can you help me with the damn ring?"

Sam went through her cabinets in search of any kind of oil that he could use to help the ring slip off of her finger."It's amazing. You have no butter, cooking oil, nothing. Do even cook?" He questioned.

Mercedes shrugged."Sometimes. I usually only buy what's needed. We're not cooking a damn chicken, Sam, I just need this ring off of my finger."

"The oil is to help slip it off."

"Oh."She said simply."I have something that would maybe help."

"Okay? Shoot."

She looked down at her feet."Lube?"

Sam laughed."That'll work….Freak!"

"Shut up!"She laughed along with Sam." There's some K-Y in the drawer next to my bed."

"Wonder what else I will find."

"Just hurry up!"

Sam laughed all the way to Mercedes' room. He searched through her drawer until he reached the bottom, finally finding the lubricant and a couple of other items.

While waiting for Sam to return with the lube, Mercedes continued to toy with the ring in hopes that it would come off. She ran her hand under the water and squeezed some soap along the band while wiggling the ring up her finger, but it still would not budge."Sam can you please hur-" She was cut short by the sound of the door knob to her front door beginning to wobble, followed by the sound of a key being entered into the lock. Her heart sped. The only two people with a key was Kurt and Caleb, mainly because he stole her key and made a copy for "emergency" purposes. She ran to the peep hole and saw the forehead that belonged to none other than Caleb, unmistakably so. She contemplated hiding, but knowing that fool he would searched the apartment top to bottom. Her eye's shifted between her bedroom and her front door until finally the door swung open. There stood Caleb and to her surprise Shane, right in the entrance of her apartment.

"Hey, baby!" Caleb greeted her, placing a chaste kiss on her lips. Shane stood back staring down at her with a weird, almost sinister grin.

She prayed with all her might, that Sam wouldn't come out of the room.

"Got it! I found the lub…" Sam tucked the lubricant behind his back as he entered the room. "Hey, guys!" He waved nervously.

Mercedes palmed her face.

"Am I interrupting something? Can you tell me why white chocolate here just came out of your room with a tube of lube?"

"I-I –he….Well you see…."

"Once a slut always a slut." Shane stepped with his arms crossed.

The room fell silent. Mercedes looked at the men who stood in her living room and fought to not break down right in front of them, she refused to, especially in front of Shane. She wouldn't give him the pleasure.

"What did you just say?"

"Sam don't!" Mercedes pleaded.

Shane smiled."I said, white boy, once a slut ALWAYS a slut."

Before Mercedes could say anything else Sam charged at Shane, barley making him budge.

Sam swung his fist, hitting Shane in his jaw then again in his rib cage. For a second he believed he actually stood a chance at beating him, but that was quickly taken away when Caleb jumped in, kicking and throwing punches while Shane pinned Sam down by gripping his neck.

"Leave him alone!" Mercedes screamed, pushing Caleb and trying to pull him off of him. "Please….He didn't do anything wrong!"

Caleb turned to Mercedes."So what you saying? You choose this white boy over me?"

"Get off of him! You're going to kill him! Please!" She sobbed heavily as she yanked at Shane's shirt paying no mind to Caleb and his question.

Sirens began to sound off in the distance and Shane finally let go of Sam.

Caleb repeated his question, refusing to leave without an answer. Mercedes narrowed her eyes."I'd choose him over you any day of the fucking week! Now get the hell out of my house!" She cried while cradling Sam.

Caleb started for Mercedes with a raised hand but was stopped by Shane.

Shane pointed at the window."Cops! We have to get out of here now. The bitch will get what's coming to her." He pulled Caleb with him out of the apartment and they were soon gone.

Mercedes rocked back and forth with Sam's head lying in lap. He was bloodied and barley breathing. His eyes were swollen shut and a purplish ring already began to appear where Shane had hold of his neck. She cried over him, pleading for him to be okay. "Sam….Sam please say something…anything…"Her voice cracked as his body laid lifeless in her arms. "Please…" She placed a kiss on his forehead and began to sing the song she once walked in on him singing. "Although loneliness has always been a friend of mine…."She sobbed and wiped the steady tears that streamed down her face."I'm leaving my life in your hands… " She rocked him and waited for the paramedics to arrive to her floor."Don't care what's written in your history, as long as you're here with me…"

The tears that she fought to keep at bay fell intensely once more as she felt his body become stiff and cold. As if they heard her prayers the paramedics soon rushed in and tended to Sam as she stood by and watched him fight for his life.

A/N: Heeeeeey you guys! Lol. I honestly don't know what to say to y'all. I guess I'll start by saying I've written this chapter about 3 times because I was not happy with it and for awhile I wasn't exactly sure where I wanted to take this story. Luckily after getting into RPing I once again found my muse and gave this chapter (and couple other chapters) another try and though I feel like it could have been better, I am happy with it. Alas an update! And I know I said this chapter would be happy one but it just didn't turn out that way lol

As usual please forgive any mistakes and or any grammar errors you may and most likely will find.

Thanks to anyone who is still around reading this story!
