Chapter 10
Around 6 o'clock Vanessa was in Olivia and Chester's room with her aunt trying to figure out which dress she should where on her date while Chester was in the living room with the kids watching a movie. She picked up a lilac color dress and looked in the floor length mirror as she held it up to her body then sighed, "why is getting ready for the first date so difficult?" she asked as she laid the dress back on the bed.
"I don't know, Chester and I had never had a first date," Olivia said as she held up a light pink dress up to her niece.
"Thought y'all did," Vanessa said, "I think I like this one."
"I like it too and no we didn't, he asked me out at the hospital."
"So? He proposed to you there too."
"God, I married a corny guy," Olivia said as Chester stood silently in the door way.
"But you love me," he said wrapping his arms around her.
Olivia smiled as she turned around and kissed him, "that I do," then kissed him again.
"Oh my god, get a room," Vanessa said looking in the mirror again.
"We do, but you're in it," Chester said.
"Ha ha, very funny."
"I know I'm funny."
"Only in your dreams," Olivia said which earned a snicker from their niece.
"Now that's not funny or nice."
"I wasn't trying to be either one of them. Now get out so she can get ready," she said shoving him out of the room and closing the door.
"That wasn't nice Aunt Liv, but it was funny," Vanessa said as she went in the conjoined bathroom.
"So have you heard anything else from your mom?" Olivia asked as she hung up the dresses that were still on the bed.
"She called again last night," Vanessa said as she fixed her hair.
"What did she have to say?"
"Nothing much really, asked about you and if you were still together with that guy you were with the last time she saw you."
"What guy? You mean the accountant?"
"I guess, she said you were dating him when I was like 3 or 4 years old."
"Yeah, that was the accountant."
"How can you remember dating a guy from 22 or 23 years ago?"
"Because he was the only guy I dated that wore a suit and tie everyday."
"Wow, everyday?"
"Yep, he didn't have a very good taste in clothes, but he sure was sexy. Hell put casual clothes on him and he would've looked even sexier."
"Okay, enough about your past dating life. Tell me something," Vanessa said as she came out of the bathroom while putting on one of her earrings.
"Like what?"
"Did she love me?"
"Of course she loved you."
"Then why did she leave me?"
"That's something you're going to have to ask her yourself."
"I wouldn't leave my kids the way she left me."
"I know, but sometimes people do things without thinking about how the person their hurting will react," Olivia said as she sat down on the bed.
About 10 minutes until 7 there was a knock on the door, so Angel pause the movie and got up to answer it. When she opened the door she saw a guy in a suit, "you must be here for my mom, right?" she asked the guy.
"Yeah, I'm Nick," the guy said.
"Come in and I'll go see if she's ready."
Nick walked in and stood next to the couch as Angel walked back to where her mom was. He looked Noah then at Allison as Chester came in the room, "Hi, I'm Chester Lake, Vanessa's uncle," he said as he stuck his hand out to shake Nick's hand.
Nick shook his hand, "nice to meet you, I'm Nick."
"Nice to meet you too, so where do you plan on taking my niece tonight?" he asked.
"Just to dinner sir," Nick said.
"Chester, leave the guy alone," Olivia said, "ignore my husband. Hi, I'm Olivia Lake, Vanessa's aunt."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too, Vanessa will be out in a minute."
"In a minute?" Vanessa asked as she walked in the room, "sorry to keep you waiting. See you met everyone."
"It's okay, and yeah, except those two," he said pointing at Noah and Allison.
"That's Noah and Allison. They aren't usually the ones to just introduce themselves like their sister, Angel, especially Allison."
"Nice to meet you two."
"Nice to meet you too," Noah and Allison said in unison.
Vanessa looked across the table at Nick as she smiled, maybe this will work out with him, she thought as the waiter sat her plate down in front of her.
"So how old are your kids?" Nick asked as the waiter sat his plate down in front him.
"Eight," she said then took a bite of her food, "you have any kids?"
"No, not yet."
"Angel and Allison are more like me when I was growing up. Noah is-"
"More like his dad?"
"Well not really. Actually there isn't a dad in the picture for them, yet."
"So you weren't with their dad when they were born?" he asked then realized he shouldn't be asking question, "sorry, it's none of my business."
"It's okay, but to answer your question I was never with their dad. Lets just say I was at the wrong place at the wrong time."
"Ah, okay I get it."
"Yeah, but to be honest I wouldn't want to go back in time to change that."
"That's good," he said as they finished their food.
After they had finished their dessert and Nick paid for the dinner they walked out of the restaurant. They walked down the sidewalk in silence for a bit until Vanessa broke the silence, "so what do you do?" she asked as they continued down the sidewalk.
"You know that diner on 5th?"
"Yeah."
"I own it, well actually my parents own it, but I run the place with the help of my sisters, aside from being in the army reserve."
"Nice. How many sisters do you have?"
"Three. Leigh is thirty, Helen just turned twenty-eight, and Zoey is twenty."
"Wow."
"What about you? Got any siblings?"
"Nope, only child unless my so called mother remarried between now and twenty years ago, my dad raised me until I was sixteen then I was forced to come live with my aunt."
"What about your mom?" Nick asked as they walked down the sidewalk.
"My mom left when I was five and haven't seen or heard from her since then until two days ago."
"My parents have been married for thirty-five years."
"Hmm," was the only thing Vanessa had to say as she stared at the sidewalk then spoke up, "I'd like that someday."
"Like what?"
"To be married to the same person for thirty-five years."
"I'm sure you will someday," then he stopped walking and pulled her close kissing her.
