"Oh my god!" came a high pitch scream from behind the curtained barricade, scaring the other women in the room. "Klaus, get me the drugs! I need the drugs!" Then there was another scream, earth shattering and tear inducing. "And put that bloody camera away" the same voice growled.
A blond haired man scurried out from behind the curtain, mumbling apologies under his breath as he speed-walked out of the room. A string of curse words followed in his wake as another contraction hit his wife.
Caroline clutched her bulging tummy and took deep breaths, desperately trying to minimize the pain for herself. Her eyes squeezed shut as the pain intensified and spurred on for what seemed like hours. Before she knew it, Klaus was by her side and so was the doctor along with a few nurses. She was moved into a private room which the hospital staff had already prepped for delivery. The anesthetist arrived a moment later and plugged in the IV into her veins, all the while explaining to her what exactly he was doing. She listened half-heartedly while squeezing the life out of her husband's hand.
Suddenly, the pain was gone. She could feel the pressure of her baby against her hips and the discomfort of her muscles clenching, but there was no pain. She took a deep breath, loosening her grip on her husband's hand. He stroked her hair gently and kissed her crown, whispering words of comfort and encouragement. There was nothing left to do but wait for the doctor to give her the sign to push.
It seemed like not too long ago that she had found out that she was pregnant. It was at her mother-in-law's birthday party that Katherine, her sister-in-law and best friend, had dragged her to the ladies' room and forced her to take a test. A mother of two, Katherine hadn't found any reason to get worked up about a pregnancy scare. It came back positive, much to Katherine's delight. Caroline's mind was a cocktail of relief and shock. Relief because she finally knew for sure, shock because she didn't know whether they were ready for a big responsibility. Katherine, in her joyous state, had celebrated with copious amounts of champagne, saying that it wasn't very often that she got to indulge in the good things in life. Her children were at their neighbours for the night and Katherine, as much of loving mother she was, was delighted to have her hands free for the night. Later that night, in her intoxicated state, she had blurted out Caroline's "good" news at the dinner table, causing everyone to spill their wine and drop their forks. Caroline sat frozen in her seat as Klaus slowly made his way over to her, calmly asking for her confirmation. When she silently nodded her head, she was enveloped in strong arms, provoking the uproar of the entire room. He kissed her cheeks as he smiled big and wide. His mother had gushed that that was the best present she had ever received, sobering Katherine in an instant. It had been an unforgettable day indeed.
When the doctor indicated that she should begin pushing, she was more than ready to get the baby out of her. It had been more than twelve hours since her water broke and she was exhausted. What she wanted to do was squeeze the baby out of her as quickly as possible and get some sleep. Grabbing Klaus' waiting hand, she pushed with all her might. The voices faded to the background, all she could see was the silent movement of the doctor's lips and the soothing movements of Klaus' hands down her back. The doctor's face morphed into one of excited motivations, his lips seemed to say that he could see the head of the baby. Caroline took a deep breath one more time and prepared to push one last time. Time seemed to slow as a shrill cry pierced her sound proof bubble. It was the sweetest cry she had ever heard. Klaus' hand stilled around her shoulders as the doctor held her up for them to see. Her hands fisted by her sides as she wailed, drawing attention to her existence. Caroline's eyes filled with tears as Klaus wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead.
"We have a daughter," he murmured in happy disbelief, "I love you so much."
Her eyes were glued to her perfect baby girl. The world seemed to revolve around her. The light seemed to be emanating from her. She saw Klaus move to cut the umbilical cord. He couldn't seem to keep his eyes off her. The nurse wrapped her up in a blanket and placed her on her mother's chest. Caroline hugged the baby to her, never wanting to be separated from her. She felt the bed dip as Klaus sat down on the edge of the bed, wrapping his arm around his family.
"She's beautiful," Caroline said as the baby closed her eyes, safe in her mother's embrace. "All of her."
"She looks like her mother." Klaus said. "But she does have a hint of the devil in her eyes." She could tell her was smirking.
"You aren't a devil, Klaus." She said, leaning into him.
He smiled. "What's her name?" he asked.
"Desiree Isadora Mikaelson." She spoke evenly, taking Klaus by surprised. It had been his choice all along but she had never agreed on it.
"What changed your mind?" he asked.
She shrugged. "I love you." She said, smiling big and wide. He kissed her long and hard, his lips caressing hers. They barely broke apart when the family burst in bearing balloons and stuff toys of every colour and size. Their world was finally complete.
