Katniss Pov
I woke just as the sun had started to rise over the mountains, through the door and into my eyes; acting as a natural alarm clock. Quickly, I hope to my feet and rub my eyes, ready for the day ahead of me. Dealing with Glimmer would probably be the hardest thing I had to face today, since I probably straightened out the others with my speech last night.
Striding out onto the deck, I immediately notice something's off. There were three people missing; Glimmer, Thresh and Marvel. Is mile triumphantly, they finally got the message. After almost drowning, I had mentally set a goal; take no more BS from anyone. This was my home and my food, and water and weapons, so if they didn't like the way I was running things, they could leave.
I guess they did, I thought to myself as I walked over to the fire pit so I could feed the flames, but as I started walking over there, a hand shot out and grabbed my ankle.
"They left. He left." Rue's voice whispered from underneath the blanket. My eyes softened automatically.
"I know how you feel. When I was young, about your age I'd assume, my father left me for the land above the clouds. For so long, I was so angry with him, always asking myself, what had I done wrong and did he ever really care. But I knew, deep in my heart even if I didn't know it, that he was always there, even if he was there with me. It's the same with Thresh. He will alway be with you even when he isn't there. He is apart of you and you can't forget that." I smile down at her small form, "Now, let's get to work!"
So we start the Dailey grind, waking up the others, cooking the average breakfast of deer bacon, bluejay eggs and some fruit. After everyone ate, we all started a job. I go hunting with Clove and Cato, while Rue and Prim gather greens, berries, and eggs. Foxy and Peeta experiment with different things, whether it be figuring out how to make fishing poles or flour. So far, they have made some flour out of some wheat we brought back from one of our expeditions from the other side if the island.
Everything was peaceful and quiet for at least a week until Glimmer came back.
"Katniss darling, how are you?" She asks in a sickly sweet voice, hatred seeping out if every word.
"What do you want Glimmer? I inquired tiredly, putting the butt of my hands over my eyes. Just looking at her brought back awe gum memories, like the cold of the water, the sting if suffocation.
"I was just wondering if any of our dear friends would like to come join us at our new camp on the west side if the island. It is so much better then the plain old east side." She says, getting straight to the point. Immediately, I think of Rue. She has been so sad since Thresh left that it can't be healthy. She would cry at night and act like a zombie during the day. Everything may be peaceful, but not perfect.
" Rue! I need you!" I call, hoping she'll hear me from down below in the clearing. Soon enough, I hear the ladder rungs hitting tree bark and her small head pops over the edge.
"Yes Katniss?" She asks tiredly. Her eyes widen as soon as she sees Glimmer standing in the deck.
"Rue, you know I love you right?" I tell her as she scampers over to me. She nods her head slowly, not understanding. "Ever since Thresh left you've been sad and I don't want that for you: so that's why I need you to go with Glimmer." Her doe eyes widen, starring up at me in shock.
"But why?" Was the only thing she says.
"Because I care about you and I want what's best for you. Now go pack your things. Tell everyone else that if they want to go, they can." I declare, judging her in the direction of the others.
It is completely quiet until Glimmer breaks the silence.
"That was sweet, but we need to go." I then realize that Rue is standing there with her sleeping mat and a water canteen.
"Good bye Katniss. I'll miss you" and with that, they were gone.
