"I heard the newly weds are back." Hermione stated, sitting on the small work bench in Jacob's garage.
He nodded. "Why are they back so soon? I thought honeymoon's lasted longer..." Hermione wondered.
Jacob shrugged. "I thought so too. When I get married, I'll make sure that my honeymoon lasts at least a month," he eyed Hermione, grinning mischievously.
"Oh? And do you plan on getting married soon?" Hermione joked, playing along as she enjoyed the view of her boyfriend kneeling on the ground in front of his bike.
"That all depends on the girl," he murmured, staring at Hermione intensely.
Hermione blushed when she noticed his heated look, dropping her eyes to eye his bare chest instead. She was pleased to know he wasn't against marrying her but they had only been dating a few months, it would be illogical to get engaged so soon. She froze, engaged? He hadn't even said he was talking about her! They were only talking theoretically, she shouldn't take him seriously. She shook her head.
"I'm done with this one," he told her.
She beckoned him over with her finger, smiling at him cheekily. He moved in front of her, pushing her legs apart and placed his hands on her knees as she picked up a cloth and started wiping away grease stains from his chest. She licked her thumb to wipe away a particularly stubborn grease spot. She slowly stopped her actions when she could see no more dirty traces and looked up at him when he placed his hands on her hips.
"I'm glad you're here, Hermione," he said.
She placed a hand on his cheek. "I'm glad I'm here too, to think that I wouldn't have met you if I hadn't come to Forks... I-"
"Let's not think about 'what would have been," he interrupted, deciding it might be time to tell her his secret.
He pulled her flush against him, her hips on his. "Hermione," he whispered.
"Yes?"
"I love you," he admitted.
Her grin was the largest one he had ever seen and her hand moved to thread through his hair. "I love you too."
He kissed her, forgetting about wanting to admit his secret, lost in the moment. Lost in loving her. His secret could wait.
Jacob was furious, of all the things that could have happened, the leech just had to go and get Bella pregnant. He transformed as he arrived at Hermione's house, banging on her door. She rushed to open the door, wearing nothing but her overly large pijama shirt.
"Jacob, what in the world are you doing here so late?" She asked, concerned by his frantic knocking.
"The- the bastard went and knocked her up!" He yelled, furiously.
Hermione frowned. "Who?"
"Edward! That scum knocked Bella up!"
Hermione could not uderstand how such a thing was possible. Vampires were infertile. "I don't see how that's a bad thing; they are married after all," she faked ingnorance.
"You don't understand! I went to see them! It's unnatural!"
"Honnestly, Jake, I think you're just exagerating it."
"Oh, 'course you don't understand! You don't know the circumstances! That thing will kill her!"
"Come now, a baby is hardly a thing," she reprimanded, trying to say things a normal girl would, one who had no idea Edward was a vampire. Her mind, however, was already searching for explanations, knowledge or books that could explain the situation.
"It's not a baby! It's a monster!" He growled.
"You're being ridiculous," she said, annoyed by his comment despite herself.
He stood suddenly. "I shouldn't have come here, you won't understand. You don't know anything about this."
Hermione frowned at that statement. "As an infamous British know-it-all, I resent that comment. I do not appreciate your tone," her tone alerted him to her shift in mood.
"I'm sorry, but it's true! You don't know anything about what's happening around here! It was stupid of me to come here, but my anger and frustration drove me to find a source of comfort," he knew that it was due to the imprint and the wolf within him that he ended up at Hermione's.
"Jacob. Sit," she ordered, fighting an inapproriate smile that tried to appear on her face when he immediately complied. She would have said that to anyone but the fact that she had given a very dog like command to a shape-shifting wolf amused her. "I do not like to brag, however I praise myself in knowing a great deal of things."
"Not this, this is not something you would have learnt in your school."
"Jake, I know a lot more than I let on," his head snapped up to stare at her. "I still have my fair share of secrets, so I'll allow you to believe you still have yours. I'll let you tell me when you're ready," Hermione stated, confidently.
"You think you know, but this is something you could never imagine," he shook his head.
Hermione sighed, smiling at him affectionately. "I suppose we shall see when the time comes. Now go home Jacob. Rest and come see me again once you're calm."
He stared at her and nodded reluctantly. "Alright, I'll come see you tomorrow."
He stood and went to the door, sighing he turned back towards her, wrapping the small brunette in his arms. "We have a lot to talk about tomorrow. I think it's about time I explain to you the situation. If we want to give this relationship a chance of surviving, we need to be completely honest to each other."
"So... Tomorrow, no more secrets?"
"No more secrets," he agreed.
She smiled as she closed the door, she knew how she would react to his secret. However, Jacob was going to be in new territory, he was definitely in for a shock.
"Remus good to see you back on your two feet," Ron said, when the scruffy looking man came back in.
"How was the full moon?" Ginny inquired.
"As always, though every fourth one is harder than the others for some reason. Teddy was just jolly though, weren't you cub?" Remus joked.
"Again! Again!" Teddy exclaimed.
"Next month, pup," Remus said.
"I want to be a wolf now," Teddy stated, stubbornly.
"I could take him out into the forest if you want, Remus?" Hermione offered.
"Are you not afraid he'll be seen?" Harry asked.
"Well seeing as Jacob is going to tell me he's a wolf today and I'll tell him I'm a witch, I suspect it won't matter."
"Ah, ready for the big step then?" Ron said.
"I was always ready, since I knew what he was but I wanted him to be comfortable before I told him. You don't think he'll be mad do you?"
"You did the right thing, 'Mione, don't worry," Ginny reassured.
"It's your lucky day, Ted! You get to go out with your aunt and wolf out!" Remus informed his son.
Teddy jumped into Hermione's arms, excited. "Though you're going to have to respect a few rules if you want to be allowed to do this again," Hermione said, firmly.
He nodded, eyes shining happily. "You can only transform into a wolf and back when I tell you to," when he didn't answer she grabbed his face to make him concentrate on her instead of the fly that had landed on the window outside. "You've got that, Teddy?"
"Yes!" He claimed.
"I'll see you all later, time for a serious chat with my boyfriend," she waved.
"Good luck, although I don't think you need it. That bloke is bloody devoted to you. It's almost scary," Ron muttered.
"Go ahead Ted, wolf out but remember the rules, don't wander off too far away from me and only transform back when I tell you to," he nodded, leaping off the fallen long he had been climbing on.
He then disappeared into the thick wild plants Hermione was struggling through. She watched him bound away until she could no longer see him before moving on. After half an hour tread through the wilderness, Hermione found herself standing on the edge of the forest, staring at Jacob's cosy house. She waved her wand above her, casting a scourgify, to clean up all her mud and sweat stains. Feeling presentable she slipped her wand into the waist band of her jeans and pulled her top over it.
"Here goes nothing," she said to herself, breifly turning back to the forest to tell Teddy to stay there for a moment.
Jacob opened the front door before she could even knock. "Please, come in," he said, somewhat nervously.
His nerves did not prevent him from pushing her against the door and kissing her forcefully. Hermione could tell he was afraid she would turn him away once she learnt what his secret was. She found his fear adorable.
When she was finally let up for air she spoke. "I was actually thinking about going for a walk in the forest to talk."
He glanced at the tree line, nodding hesiatantly, as if he sensed something in there he didn't like. He recognized it as the smell from the park and he could smell some of it floating on Hermione, as if she had been close to the source of the stench. He knew it came from the little boy she had been taking care of but he had yet to figure out what he was.
They wandered into the forest, completely concealed from the outside world and sat on a long, facing a small clearing. "So do you want to start?"
"Yeah, I am the one who suggested we have this chat, besides you've already admitted a lot of your secrets to me. It's my turn," he said.
They sat in silence, Hermione glancing around for Teddy. "This is going to be hard to believe, Hermione but you have to know that there are certain unbelievable things that exist in the world."
Hermione stayed silent. He can do better than that, she thought. "As in supernatural beings. And-"
"And?" Hermione urdged when he broke off, his head snapping to the side.
She had no doubt he had smelt or heard Teddy close by. He turned back to her. "And the truth is that I'm- that is to say I- not quite sure how to-"
Once again he stopped when movement caught his attention. She pushed his head to face her, her hand on his cheek. "Ignore him," she ordered, determined to get him to admit his secret.
"I'm not sure how you'll take this but I'm- um-," Hermione knew full well he was stalling and decided she had had quite enough of it.
"You're what?" She smirked, crossing her arms.
"I'm a wolf shape-shifter," he said. "I realize it's hard to believe and you-"
"I know," Hermione interrupted, but he barely heard her.
"-must think I'm crazy but I assure you it's true and I can prove it." Hermione started laughing, making him frown when he finally absorbed what she had said.
"You know?" She nodded. "About me being a-"
"Man who transforms into a large wolf that hunts vampires? Yes I know, I've known since the beginning."
"Since the beginning?" He asked, his voice almost squeaking when he spoke the last word.
Hermione made a small grimace. "Well, not the beginning beginning, but close enough."
"It doesn't bother you?" He checked.
"Absolutely not, why would it?" He shrugged at her rhetorical question.
"How come you know?" He wanted to know.
"Ah now that's a question worth asking," she stood up. "Now it's your turn not to freak out."
She carefully pulled out her wand and held it so that he could see it perfectly. "What's that?"
"A wand," she stated.
"So what, are you a fairy or something?" He joked.
"A witch," she corrected.
There was a moment of silence during which Jacob stared at her wand blankly. "Are you making fun of me?" Jacob demanded, angrily standing to his full hight, making Hermione to take a step back.
"Of course not, why would you think that?"
"I can't believe it! I tell you my biggest secret and all you can think to do is mock me by pretending to be a witch! I know they don't exist!"
"So what?! Shape-shifters can exist but not witches?" She practically yelled, her frustration in his reaction getting the better of her.
He turned to walk away, his hands turning to fists as anger started to consume him. "Don't turn away from me!" She hollered.
"I have to go or you'll be in danger!" He growled, still moving forward.
"Oh no you won't!" She waved her wand, creating an invisible wall in front of him.
He crashed into it and looked around dazed, his anger disappearing as suddenly as it had appeared. Satisfied at having caught his attention, she twirled her wand thus lifting him off the ground and floating him around so that he was looking right at her.
"Are you calm now?" She demanded. He nodded dumbly and she dropped him. "Believe me now?"
"Yes but... How is this possible? I've never heard of real witches before," he said.
"The Wizarding Community is extremely well hidden. As for you shape-shifters, you left the wizarding community centuries ago, thinking you were better off without it. Your ancestors left, promising to never speak about wizards and witches to their off-spring in order to alienate that world entirely."
"So you're real?"
"As real as you are," she aquiested.
"That's... That's awesome. How much can you do with your wand?" He inquired.
"Pretty much anything expect creating food out of thin air: Gamp's Law."
"And do you need your wand all the time?"
"Some witches and wizards can do wandless magic as well as non-verbal magic, but it requires an unimaginable amount of time and practice. Harry, Ron and I can because of all the time we had while on the run. Ginny is still learning."
Jacob let out a long breath, stepping closer to her and curling a strong, tan arm around her back. "You just keep becoming more and more amazing everytime I see you," he murmured.
"You're pretty amazing yourself," she replied.
He gazed into her eyes silently for a moment, ducking his head to kiss her senseless. "God, I love you so much."
At that moment, Teddy leaped out of the trees, rubbing against Hermione's legs, whimpering to attract her attention. Jacob immediately stiffened as he took a step back. Hermoine, on the other hand, grinned, bending down to pet Teddy and rub him behind his ears.
"Hey there, pup," she cooed. "You've been a very good boy, Ted. Up."
Teddy barked and transformed in front of an awestruck Jacob. "He's a shapeshifter?" He inquired.
"No, he's a werewolf."
"A werewolf? What's the difference with me?" He asked, confused.
"He's a fullblooded werewolf, born of a werewolf. His father is the type of creature who tranforms every month on the full moon into an uncontrollable wolf. Teddy, being his son can transform at will into a wolf, like you and your pack, but once full grown, he will be so powerful. Won't you be, Teddy?"
He nodded keenly, with a happy twinkle in his eyes. "Don't tell the Cullens just yet, alright? I think they'll take it better if they hear it from us rather than you."
"No problem," Jacob agreed.
Much later that day, Hermione wondered back into her home, Teddy by her feet. She had left Jacob after making him swear not to tell anyone outside of his pack. She believed the vampires would take the news better if her friends and her told them themselves.
"I assume everything went according to plan, what with your love sick smile," Harry observed casually as he entered the house behind her.
"He's telling the pack as we speak, so we'll most likely have to go see them tomorrow and make sure they took the news smoothly."
"Of course," Harry agreed.
"So? How was Ginny's visit with the Cullens?"
Harry shrugged. "No idea, she's still over there."
At that moment Ginny entered the house, followed by Remus. "You won't believe it Hermione."
"What won't I believe?"
"Jacob was right."
"Right? Right about what?" Hermione asked, confused.
"About the baby, it's bloody well killing her! She's into her third week of pregnancy but she looks at least five months in! She's looking weaker than ever: bags under her eyes, hollow cheeks, skin whiter than the vampires, bruises all over, it's really quite disgusting."
"Sounds like a zombie," Ron said.
"She could very well be one," Ginny pointed out.
"Don't be silly, zombies don't exist," Hermione scolded.
"That's why I said could, not was."
"Do you think she's going to make it?" Ron questioned.
Ginny shook her head. "Honestly? No, I don't. They can't turn her into a vampire so she's pretty much screwed."
"Do they need... Magic?" Remus wondered.
"It sounds like that might be one of the only ways to save her," Harry admitted.
"We should wait though, vampires were never very accepting of us magical folk."
"Yes, I remember when Sanguini told Harry and I that," Hermione said.
Ron snorted. "If they want their new family member to survive, than they better accept us."
"Can you show us some of your magic?" Sam wondered, eyeing the four wizards and two werewolves.
"Why not," Harry shrugged, raising his wand and tapping Ron on the head.
Ron disappeared before their very eyes, making them gasp. Seeing the magic Hermione preformed through Jacob's memory was a lot less impressive than this display of power, in person.
"As you can see, he is still somewhat visible if you manage to spot the shimmer he creates," Remus pointed out. The wolves squinted to spot it and nodded thoughtfully.
"I suppose this means we'll have to stay away from Edward for as long as the vampires are left in the dark."
"That would be helpful," Ginny nodded.
"It won't be much of a task, since he won't be leaving Bella's side," Paul snorted.
"However, avoiding him might arise suspicion and complicate things for our rounds," Sam said.
"Well, if you want I could cast a spell, isolating and protecting the memories concerning our magic, that way Edward will not be able to read or see it, no matter how hard he looks through your minds."
"But we'll still remember it?" He checked.
"Of course," Hermione reassured. "It would be like if I was placing a wall around this memory preventing anyone else but yourself from seeing it."
He shrugged. "Well, I don't see why not, it'll definitely make things easier for us," he glanced at Jacob. "Who should go first?"
"I will, I trust her," Jacob offered.
Every pack member stepped forward, patiently waiting for Hermione to wave her wand and cast her modified memory spell. They stood, somewhat awkwardly, trying to figure out if it had worked.
"What are you waiting for? Go ahead and transform, see if you can find this memory in the minds of your pack mates," Ron urged.
The boys raced outside, pulling off their shirts and forming a circle before transforming together. Ginny elbowed Hermione.
"That was one very nice view," she breathed.
"Ginny! You have a boyfriend!" Hermione admonished.
"So that means I can't enjoy a nice view?" Ginny scoffed. "Come on, I may be taken but I'm not blind."
"What would Harry say if he could hear you?"
"He would appreciate my good taste. You can't deny it's a one of a kind sight," Ginny chuckled.
"I'm only appreciating one view," Hermione mumbled, watching as Jaocb re-appeared, shirtless once again, from behind the house.
He strode up to her confidently, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder. "What are you two talking about?"
"The scenery," Ginny explained, walking away.
Jacob chuckled, kissing her neck. "The scenery? Really?"
Hermione turned in his arms as he continued kissing her neck, his lips placing chaste pecks at first, slowly turning them into warm open mouthed kisses. Hermione hummed, wrapping her arms around his neck and closing her eyes.
"Your spell worked like a charm," he informed her, not that she had any doubts. "I have to go though, I've got a pack meeting," he murmured against her neck.
"What's it about?" She wondered.
"We have to figure out how we're going to react to Bella being bitten," Hermione frowned at him, tugging on his hair, pulling him away from her gently. "What I mean is that the Cullens and us have a pact, but as soon as they bite Bella the pact is broken."
"What would happen then?" Hermione questioned.
"I'm not sure, seeing as we know both parties of the bite are willing. Normally we're supposed to attack them. Sam will have to decide," Jacob explained.
"Do you have a choice in the matter?"
"We can voice our opinion, but as soon as Sam gives the order we have to obey," he stated.
"So you can't go against his order? What if you disagree?"
"I won't have a choice."
"That's absolutely outrageous!" She exclaimed.
"We can't disobey our Alpha."
"Do you at least have a choice on who becomes your Alpha?"
Jacob avoided her gaze, turning his head away and trying to shake his head. "Jake? What was that? A yes or a no?"
"A no. An Alpha can choose to be an Alpha, if he decides not to be then he becomes a Beta and the Beta takes his place."
"Has that ever happened before?" She wanted to know.
He hesitated before nodding, Hermione's brows furrowed. "I know Sam is the Alpha but who's the Beta of the pack?" She asked, she had already shared a few suspicions with Ginny on who it was but she couldn't be sure.
"I am," he said, avoiding her gaze once again.
"Why do you seem so ashamed of that fact?"
"Because I should be the Alpha," he muttered. "And I couldn't handle the responsibility."
A/N: Alright well, that's it for now. Hope you enjoyed, things will be heating up in the next chapter. Most likely the vampires will learn about the witches and wizards in the next chapter. The "battle" is approaching.
